Kareem is a true gentlemen. I used to live across the street from the player who directly preceded Lew (at the time) at UCLA. We went to the same HS and he was a highly recruited player in both BB and BSB. He was (I think) a HS AA in both. He was recruited to UCLA for BB and chose that path which at that time was the most prestigious athletic scholarship you could get. He had a good year in freshman ball and then the next year, Lew came in. I saw my neighbor that summer and he said "wow!! I shoulda chosen baseball!!"

Honestly I think he has one of the more successful post-basketball careers in the sense that his mind is astute and he’s so intellectual and in tune with society - I admire that in a human being and think that is success over money. God bless him.

A point Dan & Kareem made in their conversation is that it difficult (almost unfair) to compare great players from different eras. All the players Dan mentioned would be worthy of GOAT considerations but only in a video game could you match them up & even programmers/developers for such have their own bias. Kareem's sky-hook was undeniably almost impossible to defend & what he's doing in his 70's on social justice issues is as impressive as his abilities playing basketball - in ways more so.

Jabbar has grown in humility over the years.... There were periods of his career where he was pretty much unstoppable offensively, although Wilt and Thurmond, slowed him down somewhat. In my view he was NOT a great defensive center(average rebounder for a center), but his longevity was unsurpassed...20 years. Wilt, Russell, Shaq, Hakeem, and Jabbar are probably top 5 centers all time. Jabbar is a top scorer and #3 rebounder all time ONLY because he played 20 years.. Wilt and Russ played 13. but longevity has its place. I never liked Kareem as a player... arrogant, a whiner at times on the court, vindictive at times(the sucker punch), but he has mellowed and gives Wilt and Russ their due. Live long and prosper Kareem!

  • @tchlin

He is absolutely correct there isn't any comparison. There were only 8 teams when Bill Russel played. I'm no expert but odds are better with less team. They also played a different position.

The Bucks from 1969 to 1974 won 304 games and the Knicks 266 and yet Willis Reed was 15 and 6 against Kareem or Jabbar was 6 and 15 against Willis!
In the 1970 playoffs in the 5 game Bucks series and the first 4 games of the finals against Wilt, Willis Reed scored 266 points with 120 rebounds shooting 53%. He was injured early in game 5, missed game 6 and Wilt had 45 and 27 and in game 7 could hardly walk but gutted out 27 minutes to inspire the Knicks as Clyde starred and DD had 18 points and 17 rebounds.
Willis was injured in the 1971 playoffs tearing shoulder muscles in his left shooting arm and the Knicks lost for the only time in 6 playoffs to the Bullets in 7, 93-91, was out in the 1972 playoffs with knee surgery and Wilt finally won a title as a Laker and in the 1973 finals Willis with a bad left knee was able to gut out 96 minutes in games 3 to 5 against Wilt scoring 61 points with 33 rebounds shooting 54% winning a second MVP finals award.
Only bad science and medicine could stop Willis Reed! A healthy Reed to 35 like Russell or almost 37 like Wilt and he would of won 5-6 NBA titles easy!
Kareem Jabbar a 56% shooter and stud as a Buck averaging 30 and 16 and yet against Willis Reed 6 wins and 15 losses shooting only 50%!
Jabbar was lucky Reed was injured in the 1971 playoffs or the Knicks would of played the Bucks and Jabbar would of had no NBA titles until he had Magic!

In fact, if you just consider the LEVEL of pure athletic accomplishment (meaning how great was he?) and did he accomplish feats that no one ever had? it's hard to deny Bo that spot. OTHOH, Jackie overcame cultural issues that Bo tasted but didn't have to the same extent and maybe no one EVER has since. IMO.....two worthy claimants to that throne....Jackie and Bo.
