Through the many years that I have followed the life and career of Mr KAJ, I have learned a lot. The best thing I learned was something I learned recently. Kareem has a great smile.
Mr. Jabbar is DEFINITELY underrated. Kareem's scoring is known, but folks forget his passing abilities. Kareem has more assists than the great Michael Jordan. Arvydas Sabonis is considered the greatest passer, yet Kareem has higher averages in assists than Sabonis' career in both the NBA and FIBA. The sky hook was lethal, but Kareem could do it all. Greatest HS, College, and Pro career. Greatness and longevity. Sadly, he didn't have the greatest relationship with the media during his career. I can't fault him for that due to the civil rights movement. Magic never won without Kareem. Big O never won without Kareem. It took years until the Big O Oscar Robertson finally won. Kareem won early and late in his entire career. In Kareem's 2nd year, he won it all for the Bucks. And at the age of 37 years old, Kareem won the Finals MVP. AT 37, Kobe was limping and out of the league where as Kareem won the Finals MVP. Sadly, folk remember Kareem in his 40s, but Kareem in his 20s was deadly.
jordan averaged about 2 more assists than kareem. kareem just played for a lot longer. obviously both are good passers but its silly to imply that kareem is a better passer than michael jordan because he has a larger assist total, just like how it would be silly to imply that hes a better scorer because he has a higher point total. also kobe was elite up until his achilles injury, which was mostly jsut a bad luck and overuse injury. he was averaging 38.6 minutes in that season, kareem got away with 33 min or less in his later years. if it wasnt for that achilles injury, we would probably have been marvelling at kobes longevity for at least a few more years. theyre all great players but your comparisons are really not fair to other players.

One of the best interviews I ever saw. Kareem is keenly articulate, transparent and humble yet stands up for his rights and defends his point of view. His insight is uncanny, he confidently explains the loneliness of Coach Wooden's loss of his wife....with certainty. He has the psychological power of Dostoyevsky and no doubt would KNOW what I mean and agree with me...or give me a tremendous different point of view....the guy is intellectual...who woulda thunked it???? In the 1980's Mr. Abdul-Jabbar was a guest on the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He was asked who was the greatest athlete had ever seen. His response was very surprising, even to himself, because it was someone not in his sport. His answer: Roberto Clemente, right fielder extraordinaire of the Pittsburgh Pirates. As I recall his response, he noted Clemente's grace chasing a fly ball.
I have only been to one NBA game in my life, but it was a doozy, Lakers versus hawks in the late 80s. At halftime when the players were loosening up I snuck down by the floor and got within about 50 feet of Kareem while he was doing stretches. It was so awesome just to be that close. It still gives me chills to think about
Kareem is a class act and was a fantastic athlete and basketball player. I saw him go up against Bill Walton in 1977 in Portland when the Lakers had the best record in the league. I was watching, and I didn’t realize it at the time, two of the greatest centers ever to play the game go head on in their prime. It was fantastic and the blazers winning the title, I will never forget!
I grew up in So Cal in the late 50s, 60s and the 70s. Great time for following the teams of both the college and pros. USC had 10 natl championships in baseball from '58 to '78. Football champs in '62, '67, '72, '74 and '78. Dodgers in the World Series in '59 (W), '63(W), '65 (W), '66(L), '74(L), '77(L) '78(L)damn Yankees and '81 (W) YEAH. Lakers in the NBA Finals seven times and lost them all, damn Celtics. Finally won in '72. Rams were so-so until late '60s and late '70s They held their summer practices at my high school during the '60s. Finally the Bruins. UCLA won 10 Natl Championships from '63 to '75. Kareem and I are the same age and I was lucky enough to see him play twice his freshman season. First was when I had a college wrestling meet held at UCLA , between prelims and the finals the BruBabes played. What the freshman team was called. Then later at Fullerton Jr College they played against Walt Simon, a local phenom whos son Miles played for Arizonas Natl Champ. Yes Lew Alcindor became a very great player.

There were no KAJ "rules" and he was the ultimate team player. Never had a serious injury, never took years off, never got old and fat but continued to play and never had a bad thing said about him unless it was that he was not press friendly. Can't blame him for that. KAJ had to fight against his success while MJ bathed in his success. If u looks at stats they were both dominant. You may not understand the nuance of what I am saying but many others do. We will agree to disagree because I have had this discussion before and MJ is and will always be one of the greatest BB players ever. But for me KAJ is the best ever in the span of a career. If you ask Magic he will without hesitation say "Cap".

Also i've heard this a few times, its hard for a center to get the ball up up court and they rely on guards to get them the ball, so in last second situations they aren't going to be able to dribble up court say down 2 or 3 and few seconds left and they are in the backcourt. A smaller player is always around jordans size is always going to be more versatile basically, its pretty impossible for a 7'2 guy to have handles. But id take kareem over shaq because he could make free throws and took the game more seriously than shaq did at times. Hakeem is my favourite center all time because of the post moves and things he did at his size.

That was great. I saw him at Brown Port shopping center when I was a kid and he had just joined the Bucks. I’ve always admired him as a human being and a man as well as an athlete. If I could meet one basketball player I know who I would want it to be. We’d probably talk about jazz.
There was nothing wrong with the way Kareem handled the media. More athletes should be that way. It served him well. And it was very admirable.

One of the best interviews I ever saw. Kareem is keenly articulate, transparent and humble yet stands up for his rights and defends his point of view. His insight is uncanny, he confidently explains the loneliness of Coach Wooden's loss of his wife....with certainty. He has the psychological power of Dostoyevsky and no doubt would KNOW what I mean and agree with me...or give me a tremendous different point of view....the guy is intellectual...who woulda thunked it???? My hero. God bless this gently wonderful man. And kudos to Dan for making me feel i was sitting right there.

In the 1980's Mr. Abdul-Jabbar was a guest on the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He was asked who was the greatest athlete had ever seen. His response was very surprising, even to himself, because it was someone not in his sport. His answer: Roberto Clemente, right fielder extraordinaire of the Pittsburgh Pirates. As I recall his response, he noted Clemente's grace chasing a fly ball.
I have only been to one NBA game in my life, but it was a doozy, Lakers versus hawks in the late 80s. At halftime when the players were loosening up I snuck down by the floor and got within about 50 feet of Kareem while he was doing stretches. It was so awesome just to be that close. It still gives me chills to think about

Kareem is a class act and was a fantastic athlete and basketball player. I saw him go up against Bill Walton in 1977 in Portland when the Lakers had the best record in the league. I was watching, and I didn’t realize it at the time, two of the greatest centers ever to play the game go head on in their prime. It was fantastic and the blazers winning the title, I will never forget!

I grew up in So Cal in the late 50s, 60s and the 70s. Great time for following the teams of both the college and pros. USC had 10 natl championships in baseball from '58 to '78. Football champs in '62, '67, '72, '74 and '78. Dodgers in the World Series in '59 (W), '63(W), '65 (W), '66(L), '74(L), '77(L) '78(L)damn Yankees and '81 (W) YEAH. Lakers in the NBA Finals seven times and lost them all, damn Celtics. Finally won in '72. Rams were so-so until late '60s and late '70s They held their summer practices at my high school during the '60s. Finally the Bruins. UCLA won 10 Natl Championships from '63 to '75. Kareem and I are the same age and I was lucky enough to see him play twice his freshman season. First was when I had a college wrestling meet held at UCLA , between prelims and the finals the BruBabes played. What the freshman team was called. Then later at Fullerton Jr College they played against Walt Simon, a local phenom whos son Miles played for Arizonas Natl Champ. Yes Lew Alcindor became a very great player.
All these years later, I still treasure those 1980's watching Bird, Magic and Kareem. What an era!

There were no KAJ "rules" and he was the ultimate team player. Never had a serious injury, never took years off, never got old and fat but continued to play and never had a bad thing said about him unless it was that he was not press friendly. Can't blame him for that. KAJ had to fight against his success while MJ bathed in his success. If u looks at stats they were both dominant. You may not understand the nuance of what I am saying but many others do. We will agree to disagree because I have had this discussion before and MJ is and will always be one of the greatest BB players ever. But for me KAJ is the best ever in the span of a career. If you ask Magic he will without hesitation say "Cap".

Daz555Daz ok i thought so. I'm just curious were you alive to watch jordan in his prime? because i was and it was phenomenal. Also i've heard this a few times, its hard for a center to get the ball up up court and they rely on guards to get them the ball, so in last second situations they aren't going to be able to dribble up court say down 2 or 3 and few seconds left and they are in the backcourt. A smaller player is always around jordans size is always going to be more versatile basically, its pretty impossible for a 7'2 guy to have handles.
But id take kareem over shaq because he could make free throws and took the game more seriously than shaq did at times. Hakeem is my favourite center all time because of the post moves and things he did at his size.
