Today, on Veterans Day, may we honor all those who have served our country. I was fortunate to observe the ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier decades ago while living in Alexandria, VA when my husband was assigned to The Pentagon. My father served in World War II and my husband was a career Army officer who was a Vietnam veteran. They both are interred at Arlington National Cemetery ... may they all rest in peace.
Watching this ceremony is what helped me make my decision to serve at 18 years old. Proudly served in Kuwait, Rwanda, Somalia, and Haiti. Even now, at 46 years old, this still tugs at my heart. #OnlySoldiersKnow

My first visit to witness the changing of the guard was yesterday April 16, 2019, a couple months shy of my 70th birthday. It was very moving for me. Vietnam Vet 1968-1971.
In 1964, our senior class visited this site. I was just 17, and the gravity didn't sink in at that time. To see this again today, on the 100th anniversary of its beginning, was an honor. Our freedom was defended by these brave soldiers.

The guards that personally guard the tomb NEVER wears any rank to never outrank the unknown soldier(s), and and the highest ranking office salutes them since they gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country........

Visited this place in 2014 on my 8th grade trip. I will always remember this experience and will be forever thankful for all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to secure my Freedom. Thank you 🙏🏼
My father, a WWII US Marine veteran, took me to watch the arrival of the WWII and Korean Unknowns into Washington, DC, where we lived in 1958. I was a very young 3 year old. The next day we were first in the public line at the US Capitol to pay respects to the Unknowns when a reporter/photographer asked my dad if an amputee behind us could enter the Rotunda first; my dad agreed. While they were shifting positions the Rotunda doors were opened and I walked on in by myself. Though not officially documented that a 3 year old was the first public visitor to honor the Unknowns, I have always considered the Tomb to be one of the most sacred places in our country and am always moved by the ceremony and my very minor connection to those honored men.
I was fortunate enough to be there in 2010 and witness the changing of the guard in person. It is truly breath taking. Well worth the trip just to watch that alone.
I've seen the changing several times in this life. It's always a beautiful, sombering experience. Also, I've the privilege of working with two soldiers whom as they put it had the privilege of being selected as guards for the tomb. The standards for this are extremely high. These two proved that out. I've lost many in twenty five years of service. Watching this reminds me of the gratitude and respect we owe them. Face is getting a little wet. God Bless.
We owe them. Those of us that served (I served 21 years active duty). My Father and Mother are buried at Arlington. I visit as often as I can to pay my respects.
The respect & honour paid to these unknown soldiers is immensely sad but beautiful, admiration for these men who guard them are also brave & disciplined in accordance with duties that are adhered to day & night.
Went to washington twice, both times immediately to Arlington, watched the guard change 3 times and wandered the grounds looking up more famous names, and seen the flight museum that was it for the day

It has been guarded continuously for over 100 years. Even at night a guard walks the path, and it is considered an honor to walk during the worst weather, like extra bragging rights. In my time in the Marines I knew some hard, tough, steadfast men, but none compared to the Sentinels of the Tomb. Those men and women truly represent the best of us all.
They have a little green tent with a phone in it. They will sometimes take refuge in it during extreme weather. Sometimes the guards are order to post there as well.
My Great Uncle has a cross in Arlington, but is buried in France, having fallen on 8 June 1944. All who are remembered there gave of themselves for the nation now facing new trials. We must remember their sacrifice, and their spirit. "And when he gets to Heaven, Saint Peter he will tell, another Soldier reporting, Sir! I've done my time in hell."
I went as a teenager in High School but had no real concept of history and what i was seeing. I'm now heading back in my late twenties to pay respects to all the brave service men and women who have gave their lives fighting for our country.
With all do respect to the unknown soldiers at Arlington, Arlington isn't the only thing that we as a nation is all about. We have many, many things that helps create what our country stands for.
Nor are these the only tombs of unknown soldiers the first is in Westminster and called the tomb of the unknown warrior there is a video on TH-cam of the entombing of the unknown warrior which is very moving

The most emotional thing I have ever done was visit the Arlington Cemetery. President Kennedy’s eternal flame memorial and to see all those head stones of the men and women who died with pride fighting for our country...learning the numbers of all the dead soldiers is one thing but actually seeing the many headstones is another story..
I've been saying for years every American should go to Arlington and just walk around for a bit and meditate on their liberties and freedoms. I have once when I was 12. At 54, I want to go again now that I'm old enough to appreciate things more.

Just found these videos, they are so fascinating, love the way the cetenels are so respectful. Wish we had say over here in UK, we do have a tomb of an unknown soldier in West Minster Abbey, but it is not watched over 24/7 like the one here. You can visit, and a wreath is laid every year by member of Royal family, and any Royal who gets married, the flowers the bride carries is laid on the tomb. But this service of respect in USA puts our tomb acknowledgement way down the line of perfection. God Bless the tomb and the cetenels at Arlington.

Since I was unable to join the military, however my brother is a Marine, I honor those whos lives were givin in battle for our country, our only home their only home always pray for them, a candle of St. Martin bishop of tours will bring them back home always light their way. Peace one nation under God's blue skies. This is why i fight because they died for us immigrants can have opportunity at a better life. I was billeted at Fort Myer, VA which is adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery while in the Army and visited the Tomb many times. I also saw many military funerals while I was there. It's a very sobering sight to see. No matter how many times I've heard it played, it still chokes me up whenever I hear "Taps" played.

5 years I had the great honor and privilege to be there in person when Maj Gen Vazquez the then National Commander of Civil Air Patrol, the all volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns, it gives you a feeling that resonates and stays with you forever, to be in the presence of such outstanding honor, courage, bravery and valor, it's a feeling I'll remember for all time!

it is cool to see guard changing....i remember when i was a kid seeing it for the first time....my father told me to notice the rifle is always carried as to be drawn quickly and facing away from the tomb ....

To people who are wondering how hard it is to do what they are doing.... I served in the Navy for 5 years. Did plenty of uniform inspections. Even at the basic level in the military they expect near perfection. If you have ever seen Men In Black where Will Smith goes "best of the best of the best sir." These guys are the real life version of that movie quote. The amount of preparation and time it takes to do what they are doing is way harder than it might look.

I was there back in 1991. Wasn't a dry eye to be seen. It is a very moving ceremony and you can feel it, it's palpable. I will never forget.

5 years I had the great honor and privilege to be there in person when Maj Gen Vazquez the then National Commander of Civil Air Patrol, the all volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns, it gives you a feeling that resonates and stays with you forever, to be in the presence of such outstanding honor, courage, bravery and valor, it's a feeling I'll remember for all time!
Very brief, very informative. Great video, and may God bless the men who guard this tomb of honorable soldiers whose identities were never discovered with the exception of one. In addition, my God bless the servicemen and women who are on constant guard to protect our freedom and way of life, as well as the civilian body of people who display acts of patriotism and courage and help serve this nation through non-military lifestyles.

it is cool to see guard changing....i remember when i was a kid seeing it for the first time....my father told me to notice the rifle is always carried as to be drawn quickly and facing away from the tomb ....

To people who are wondering how hard it is to do what they are doing.... I served in the Navy for 5 years. Did plenty of uniform inspections. Even at the basic level in the military they expect near perfection. If you have ever seen Men In Black where Will Smith goes "best of the best of the best sir."
These guys are the real life version of that movie quote. The amount of preparation and time it takes to do what they are doing is way harder than it might look.

They stay in the guard quarters under the amphitheater. 3 reliefs when I served there, so one day on and two days off.
