  • Latvians like many cultures love their food and Latvia has some fantastic food and drink products that you really must try if you come to visit. In this video let me take you through my 10 recommendations (and there are many more) that you should buy and try at least once. And there's a bonus item as well at the end of the video!
It was difficult to try to think of a list of only 10 items and indeed the title because there's so much to talk about so I probably need to do separate videos to cover Latvian beers, Latvian meats, Latvian dairy products, and Latvian baked products.
    Chapters:
    0:00 Introduction
    1:48 Piragi
    3:00 Kanepju Sviests
    4:50 Charcuterie / Smoked Meats
    6:18 Kvass
    8:33 Pelmeni
    9:50 PiparKukas
    11:47 Black Balsams
    12:55 Vafelu Torte (Wafer Cake)
    14:08 Dill Crisps
14:57 Karums / Sweet Cottage Cheese
    17:07 Karums tasting with Nora
21:05 Bonus (Estonian) Product - Kama
    22:49 Outro
In 2018 we left the UK to come to Gita’s family homestead here in north Latvia, not far from the Estonian border and now we live somewhere nowhere in the middle of a forest in a house built by Gita’s grandfather. We’re videoing our journey and trying to give you some insights into how we’re living here.

One of the best meals I ever had was in Ventspils: Pickled herring, boiled potatoes, sour cream and dill with a glass of kvass.

Hi neighbor and regards from Lithuania :) I'm so glad that I found your channel, it's so nice to see homesteaders "from real world" if you know what I mean :) And especially nice to see another homesteader from Baltic States. It's so nice to see that our people is so similar with traditions, food, names and other stuff :) We with my wife brought homestead not far from Latvian border and have a plan to move there full time. Trying to make videos just for ourselves, uploading to youtube, if you interesting, you are welcome to watch :) I'm subscribed to your channel and can't wait for next video. P.S. Your video "Malka" is a masterpiece, please do more! :)

I loved how the smoked meats come out and you seemed to be struggling a bit speaking with your mouth watering.
Or maybe that was just me. Haha!

Ha! Yeah, it was my favourite bit. I used to part own a charcuterie business back in the UK so have a real interest. Lots of scope for future meat videos as so much to cover.

Dill pickle chips are a common "Lays" brand of chips in Canada. Ketchup is another variety that people tend to find weird haha.
Love the video. I miss the kvass from Lithuania. Hoping you make some more videos, especially about Latvian beer and charcuterie

I miss Mr and Mrs Lazden, they come to our country at start of world War 2, Germany invaded and destroyed their home and killed her Son. She adopted me as her daughter I helped her cook when little and as I grew older took her shopping. She always cooked special foods for us when they had company, invited us to their home but we left them to enjoy friends they had in Latvia. The meat filled roll is my comfort food as well as a lemon cookie that we kind of shaped into fingers.

I JUST found the Karums at a local international market in the USA they are pretty awesome! How are you supposed to store them? I can't find much info on them from where I'm from.. They were frozen when I bought them, but yours look soft. Do you keep the Frozen or just refrigerated?

    • @BalticHomesteaders
      @BalticHomesteaders  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

For long storage keep frozen but they’ll keep and are purchased here in the fridge. They’ll last at least a week in the fridge.

Thank you, lovely video! My mouth is watering. It’s not that easy to get Latvian products where I live in England. I totally agree with products. Great choice. Never tried estonian powder. I would also add Adazi tomato flavoured crisps, Vecriga cake (caki with an eclair type dough filled with some cottage cheese and cream) and medus kuka (honey cake), freshly baked pastries bought in bakeries and I absolutely love how now new york cheesecakes are made in Latvia buying in coffee shops.

Also to mention, that Black balsam was created in 18th century by a pharmacist and contains 45% of alcohol and a lot of herbs, that are believed helping to stay healthy. When you have a cold you can have a shot. It is popular to have with a black coffee as you mentioned, but also you can have it with blackcurrant juice heated up and it’s almost like a mouled wine and I actually prefer balsam hot drink.
