  • So you're going to go meet your Latvian's grandparents in Lauki - the countryside? Well, it may be a beautiful paradise, it may be Fear Factor. Not all lauki are the same, so hopefully a glimpse at my lauki can mentally prepare you, if it turns out to be the latter.
As you know, i recently spent a week with my babushka in the countryside after years of only being able to bear a couple of hours. It was not easy. Everyone copes with their families in their own way, this is mine. :)
And yes if you're wondering why I call my babushka babushka and not vecmāmiņa, it is because she's Russian.

I absolutely love this channel. I'm a second generation American. My grandparents on both sides are Latvian immigrants. One side actually left Latvia during ww2 and immigrated to Germany and then left to come to the US. I feel so disconnected to my Latvian culture and this brings me closer to understanding the things I dismissed as a child. I have a very Latvian name that I hated when growing up because no one could pronounce it. Maiga. But watching your channel has brought me a new understanding to my culture. So thank you.

@candyhoops3332 My middle name is Maiga! My parents emigrated to Australia & they taught me Latvian by speaking it at home, so I enjoy watching everything Latvian on youtube.

This is the most honest look at a Latvian countryside home that I have ever seen. Paldies. I got a little teary eyed at the end when you said you used to love it there and now you are getting used to it again. It is so amazing to me how children go to their grandparent's laukis and spend summer with no "modern conveniences" but they just live and love without knowing any better. Then, we get older and want more and more forgetting how happy we were with almost nothing. It is a bit sad.

My Latvian relative lived in a tiny one room house in Jurmala until she died. Only cold running water and an outhouse. We visited in 2015. She entertained us in her yard under an apple tree where she had a couch and comfy stuffed chairs. We were served maizītes and yummy baked goods. Not lauki but very old world. Lovely. I love being Latvian❤

The stone wall that you see @6:35 indicates that that building is a "normālprojekts"- state designed farmsheds that were built after the agrarian reform(reorganization of land ownership) in the interwar period. In fact it is very reflective of "lauki" in Latvia(@7:25) since there are thousands of those buildings used in similar fashion like that of your relatives - redesigned to house guests and filled with different junk which is dear to its owners.

My grandparents often spoke of their place in the country. Nearly every Latvian would have a place in the country where they would vacation in the Summers. Then in Winter, They were lucky enough to have a sauna/pirts. They would hold small parties for all their close friends. When it got unbearably hot. Everyone no matter age or gender, would run out downhill and jump bare into an ice-cold pond. And Latvian winters can get unearthly cold. Repeating this five or six times. My Latvian grandfather was fond of saying "To understand the Latvian soul, you must experience the pirts. It's what made us who we are today."

I have (pre-WW2) photos of laucenieks I'm related to. Seeing them variously hard at work, or relaxing has always fascinated me, though I'm sure if they could see me now, my lack of gardening skills would be quite a disgrace.

Been in the Lauki for nearly 5 years now and lived to tell the tale, couple of words I didn't know there, thanks. The gardening tool is called a 'hoe'. Your Babushka (Interestingly this is probably the first Russian word than many of my generation learnt because of the Kate bush song) likes garlic I see! The grass cutter tool we call trimmeris but maybe that's anglisised. Nice to see the place and also interesting that there is so much clay there, I'm somewhat jealous!

Latvian husband learned my language and he s doing great, me on the other hand is in gutters :( any recommendations. ?? Big greetings

    • @thomasarter6287

Forget on-line courses, for now, maybe a little understanding of the grammar would help but you won't get the practice, in conversational Latvian, that you will need to understand or have a conversation with Latvian speakers. You are so lucky to have someone to speak Latvian to, ask your husband to speak Latvian to you and I think you will make progress.
