Shocking dude, Some real sickos out there….
Thank you for this video. It is so important to remember NOT to connect a computer to the Internet when you are not familiar with it. This includes PCs that clients ask me to work on, family members, etc. You never know what is on the PC waiting to phone home.
@@jensv874 That "something" you refer to is much more severe than illegal programs. Your life would be over and when you get sent to prison, your life would be over. He did mention keyloggers or other programs that could infiltrate your network.
@@jensv874 On that PC it had kids doing stuff that is so wrong. Illegal programs are the lease of your worries much more illegal things.
I always format the windows to my stripped lite version anyways to lower CPU & Ram usage! Telemetrics alone are getting out of hand.
Hint
Remove the hard drive and random wireless cards even the ram can be hacked
because
Hard drive can be used to share your data if is has windows 10 install but many unwanted software installed
ram cant be hacked XDLMFAOOOO@@Stormlywing
My practice has always been to be junk system drives from 'secondhand' machines - but yeah- you handled this amazingly. Install my own drive every time.
If you buy a used pc, always a good practice to do a clean install of the os. Even if you log in as long as you aren’t seeing what he did, go to settings and into the recovery area and do a reset from there and tell it not to keep anything. At the very least. But definitely good practice not to connect to the internet before you know.
I love these mini PCs for TV boxes.
Same I bought a piesia c-box they rock
You did the right thing brother ! Kudos.
Thanks!
Back in the early 00s I used to be employed by a local computer repair shop and once in a while we encountered similar things on computers we were asked to repair/fix. Back then the local police departments usually didn't even have an IT department with investigators trained in computer forensics, so we very rarely heard back after we contacted police and/or dropped the hardware off with them. I think in most cases the computers just went into an evidence locker and were never investigated.
@@jensv874 I can see it happening naturally if the laptop or tablet was given in hibernation or sleep mode, where all the opened apps show right up after signing in to test and troubleshoot the device depending on what is supposed to be fixed.
I automatically wipe and do a clean install for PCs I get from individuals and usually even the the ones from reputable stores as well when they are used. One time I didn’t but really haven’t used it yet.
Well played. And you were lucky that they just took the disk drive.
Wise counsel for keeping yourself out of trouble, thanks.
I always wipe the hard drive, and so should you. Genius. 😂😂😂
Something I suggest doing is updating the UEFI with an image from the OEM. It is increasing common to do stealth firmware into the hardware and the only way to be certain is to updating all hardware such as SSD, UEFI and even the GPGPU. Sounds paranoid but it is possible, especially now that Windows doing trusted boot at bare metal level.
One thing I don't like about Windows is that it updates the firmware of a lot of motherboards. How do I know where it came from? Also I don't want anyone messing with something that can easily brick my system if something goes wrong. What do you think they would say if they broke your system with a bad flash or one that somehow did not go well? Good luck getting them to pay for what they did to your computer. Then if you ever have Bitlocker enabled there are a lot of people who found themselves locked out of their files and just plain out of luck. I also don't care for all of the telemetry and stuff in Windows. Then if you had a computer with all of that filth on it and connected it to the internet there is software in Windows that was actually made by Microsoft to detect and report that content. I suspect it is built into Defender since it is always scanning files and it is not possible to remove it from Windows. I actually had an copy of Windows XP that did not have it. That was before Microsloth started forcing their man in the middle we know as Defender on us. Most people would never think of it as that. They think antivirus is good, after all no one wants a virus or something similar. The fact is some of the security and antivirus suites are worse than the malware they were supposed to stop.
It’s not „common“ but it’s a good idea nonetheless. Firmware is probably ancient in most of these and updating it is at least likely to remove malware that was integrated.
Why is it that the more "features" they add to make computers "secure", the more avenues for compromise they open up? Computers keep getting less secure, not more. :(
If i find a computer with that kind of content on it, its going straight to the police.
Scary. Excellent advice. Looks a very cool little machine.
Secure Erase everything just in case. I would even update the BIOS just in case there is a UEFI rootkit or virus or something.
Thanks! I never thought of keylogger programs ( besides viruses) on a second hand computer.
yea, crazy how much I have seen of that lately.
I usta work at Freegeek, we dont boot up anybodys hard drive, we wipe it clean and zero out every bit and block, then test the drive, if its still healthy its then reused, if it fails the hard drive checks its then recycled for its metal, ssd are broken and recycled as well. We never call anybody. Its not your problem and its none of your business.
That's pretty crazy someone left that kinda stuff on there the simple fact it was that kinda stuff is just gross.. I'm glad you turned that dude into it thats crazy as heck. People like that deserve to be locked up
It is the stuff that you most likely want to unsee. If that happened to me I would go for therapy once I wash my hands of liability for the files. That and maybe just go for a good long fun vacation to try to cleanse my mind from that filth.
Boy you've had the luck on the last few computers. Hopefully its smooth sailing from here on out.
I take home my computers from recycling centers and yeah, good idea, there could be nasty pics lurking within these hdds/ssds. Make sure you guys clean install windows, linux, macos, or any os really when you get second hand electronics, especially if its from the e waste center
GREAT PSA, much appreciated!
This is why exactly i keep a pendrive with bootable Gparted on it. The first thing, what i do is boot up Gparted and wipe clean all the drives. About the HP screws... i love them. Its hard to damage their heads, because of the torx shape. Ive damaged many philips head srcews, the PC manufacturers needs to stop using them. I replaced all the screws in my machines to torx.
This is why I get listings without a hard drive. They are a lot cheaper and easy to install a new good hard drive.
It's advised to reformat the hard drive or SSD on every computer you receive as sellers may not always reformat the drive before selling it. Also, some sellers like STG Global and SJ Computers are including Kingfast SSDs which tend to fail. I would open the computer and check if the computer is using a name brand SSD. Other things to watch out for are the Wi-Fi adapter and the gaming keyboard and mouse.
It seems sellers like STG Global and SJ Computers on Amazon, Walmart, and eBay are cheapening out on refurbished PCs by including poor quality components and that isn't the only problem. I've seen issues of customers receiving PCs that are different from the listing or not coming with things mentioned in the listing. For example, Austin Evans purchased an Alarco desktop that claimed to have a GTX 650 and Intel Core i5-2400 but it included a GTX 750 and Core i7-2600. I'm guessing whoever is selling computers is probably getting the cheapest SSD, Wi-Fi adapter, keyboard, and mouse and these cheap components could be the reason why these PCs tend to stop booting or why they're having Internet issues.
As always, excellent video, like being there with you. Good advice, most of the pc's I get on various market places just have a fresh copy of windows installed with a generic account called 'user'. But I will from here on not plug a new machine into the net for sure.
When I buy used PC’s the first thing I do is ditch the HD, pop a new SSD in and re-install windows from MS download
That's scary dude. Now I know to be careful when I buy used computers.
Another way is to buy it with the agreement that the seller keeps the hard drive or just buy a pc with no hard drive included.
First thing I do is this: "Secure erase Format the Hard Drive"
Then it belongs to me.. Never connect to the internet until
I've done that!
It is cooler than most laptops because it has a better heatsink. Some laptops are very space constrained and so they don't always have cooling as great as it should be. I don't game on any laptops just for that specific reason. Even a gaming laptop will run hotter than a desktop just because there is not that much room for cooling. I really only use laptops for light stuff like web browsing and other mundane things.
A lot more breathing room there too for heat dissipation!
Each time i have to work with a costumer that brings a just recent purchased used pc i do not even bother in boot the pc from its internal drive, what i do is boot from external media and then do a low level format of all the drives inside the computer and then install a fresh copy of windows with fresh OEM license or install Linux and a fresh recovery partition of an unbloated system with all drivers and apps needed by the costumer. The surveillance on the internet is so huge and advanced that if they don't catch cyber criminals and internet creeps is because they don't want to, today nothing is private. (i am sorry if my english is not so good)
all good, i understood what you were saying.. appreciate the info!
Also don't connect it to the internet without a fresh install of Windows or any other OS of your choice. Just make sure you can find the drivers for everything first since there is a way to export them if you can't. Usually it is odd little motherboard level things that you end up needing drivers for and picking the right one is sometimes harder than it should be. They might keep the whole computer just to do forensic stuff with it such as looking for accounts where the bad material may have came from and to try to figure out who distributed it.
I've been dealing with second hand tech long enough to know the first thing you do is wipe the drive that comes with the computer if it comes from someone off the street.
I have two of these, but they were refurbs. One is unused, and the other is my Plex server. It's a great Plex server, I wouldn't really use it for a main PC though.
Buying a used computer and using it without clean installing an OS is like buying used underwear at GoodWill and wearing it without washing it
Good job on that one I can't blame yah on doing what all you did, disgusting things ppl do, had a buddy sell me a pc with questionable pics on it , he blamed it on a roommate n I wiped it out , wasn't out to get him in trouble but let him kno that I seen n found what was on there hopefully made him embarrassed n feel crappy, good job on it all!
Nowadays, SSD prices are so low that I don't mess around with the computer's internal disks; I replace them. Most of the internal drives that I have encountered are from a manufacturer that I don't know. So, the best bet is to install a new SSD. Anyway, since I don't use Windows on these PCs (I use Linux), losing the SSD is no issue to me.
sadly this stuff is more common then you might think in the pc business (repair buying selling etc) its sickening thank you for making people aware about it man fr👍 same in almost every country i assume (im from The Netherlands and its the same here at least) shut it down and bring it to the police station with the proof that you bought that pc from someone else chat records bank records etc 👍
I slap Linux on everything on all hardware I buy and thank you for the video
I'm surprised they gave you the pc back.
from what I understand it depends on the agency. some do and some don't
I never booted up any preinstalled OS on computers I bought on the marketplace, can't trust that stuff.
Always wiped and installed from fresh.
Excellent PSA.
I remember being 17 broke and i downloaded a game and a key generator. I used the key gen got the game going was fine but 3 days playing later i go on web aol back then. And pictures started popping on screen of what looked like either very small petite women or lil girls.
I freaked out.
I eveded up deleting game key gen and still kept happening.
Ended up then formating hd and reinstalled windows
wow thats nuts
fun fact you can use coffee time to allow you to use 8th and 9th gen
Or you could have immediately formatted the drive on subsequent boot and be done with it ..
SSD's and M drives need to be erased with the manufactures software. Many times commercial software for erasures will not properly address the issue of a clean wipe. When you do a wipe it’s recommended that the process is repeated three times. Had a program back in the day that worked on DOS drives that did the erasing and then filled the storage spots with all 0’s. Took a while but it was a DOD CERTIFIED software used by federal agencies. In your case it would have been easier to use a stun gun on the drive to fry it as much as possible, smack it with a sledge hammer and hit it again with the stun gun just for fun. Used this technique to dispose of old drives as well. Microwave ovens do a pretty good job at wiping chips and platens in a drive.
when i buy a PC off eBay i just replace the SSD or nvme drive immediately with a Samsung drive.. and reinstall windows.. IMO Samsung makes the best drives.. never had an issue with them.. dont trust other manufactures.. the drive that comes out i just format it and use for external storage..
I am confused. If the machine was never connected to internet. What kind of Pop Ups could it be showing?
Locally cached malware that forces the pop ups on the screen as soon as you boot up and hides the close button.
Usually this happens with fake virus alerts that flash a scam 1-800 number it wants you to call.
Never heard of it used to show “explicit” material, not hard to imagine it happens.
I probably was not clear in the video, but when I turned it on initially I had it plugged in to the internet and stuff started popping up
@DLMtechgarage Got it, thanks. I have encountered shit as well in the course of this work and no matter how minimal your involvement, it leaves a mark.
Ok - so the computer itself had nothing to do with the intro
0:00 - For Facebook market incident
4:58 - for actual breakdown
Advice regarding 2nd hand M.2 SSD's; There are some malware that can literally infect these SSD's on firmware level making it impossible to remove, and in most cases cannot be detected by any anti-virus program nor easyily removed.
I'd like an article online verifying that please.
interesting, appreciate the info, will def look into that.
@@christopherkidwell9817I would also like to see that too. Sounds like the controller on the drive is programmed to do other things. This might not be dissimilar from the way that a drive can have its firmware modified to show that it has a much higher capacity than it really does.
Total BS what StuffJason is writing here, just because something is theoretically possibility that doesn’t mean this is a realistic possibility.
@@geraldh.8047 It's not "theoretically" and instead based on experience.
Whenever I get a new computer refurbished
I boot it into Linux offline and format the drive.
My experience with a computer that looks just like this one, is that it's motherboard died and we repurposed the RAM, CPU, SSD.
Well done by bringing this to the authorities 👍
Not only it protects you but also might hopefully lead to catch some disgusting people/business.
i hope you also contacted your isp because isps may be part of the 13 eyes or 7 eyes monitoring network and may have logs of the content accessed so you may want to contact your isp and make sure they know about the stuff so they dont try to call the police or ncmec over it too.
and another thing is how do you deal with people breaking into your wifi and accessing stuff there?
it is possible to get wifi passwords by using a de authentication attack and getting the 4 way handshake and brute forcing the password from the handshake capture file.
in my area the police send the info to the isp of the investigation and have the person who turned it in labeled as a person not of interest.
as far as people breaking into the wifi, the police contact the isp and request the information on behalf of the victim, and attempt to trace the isp.
from what I gather most times they can't seem to track anything but few times they do.
@@DLMtechgarage that is what i was hoping that maybe you calling your isp and explaining your side of the story first as a secondary re residual victim they could vouch and say to the police "oh yeah the person reported this to us to help clear your name.
what did they wipe if they kept the drive
Hopefully you saved some kids.
i would probably just never have booted it up with that original install and just wiped it without even looking at what was on there. I hope they got the guy for your trouble at least. DO NOT POWER UP A USED COMPUTER LIKE THIS AND HOOK IT STRAIGHT UP INTO YOUR NETWORK.
luckily in all my years dealing with other people's pc repairs i've only ever encountered legal porn. still stuff i didn't want to see, but at least legal.
What if I buy this computer from Amazon
you should be good. the clean them out first
Thats a big old yikes. Honestly every 2nd hand machine ive bought ive intended to upgrade the drive anyways so they normally get wiped with 3 pass wipe and resold without ever looking what is on there.
i ask ppl if they want me to install it fresh or just format
any time you buy a computer that comes with a hard drive still installed, pull the hard drive. period.
It's great that you went to the cops, but remember that this could have gone really bad for you. You were in possession. Sometimes it's better to just pull and destroy the drive and call it a day, unless it's a murder case, you can easily get wrapped up in a hot mess that isn't your problem. Just saying, it's great that your agency having jurisdiction is decent, but remember when you come to law enforcement with contraband, you subject yourself to scrutiny and end up with an involvement history in their RMS, for a $60 PC not even worth it. Judgement call on one's part. The risk with FB Marketplace is pretty high to get stolen stuff too. Unlike Ebay, which is like a pawn shop, FB plays dumb and tries to wash their hands of any liability.
malice and intent is the main factor in criminal cases. Just because you end up in RMS does not mean you are a suspect unless listed as one in which malice, intent, negligence and deception becomes a factor. In this case I am considered the RP or IO.

This sort of crap is the very reason I don't view people's webcams, profile pic, or ask for any information from people that wouldn't be ok to ask a minor; and I assume everyone is a minor until they somehow prove otherwise.(I will not ask for people's age on the internet because knowing it changes nothing for me, and asking a minor for their age is totally SUS even if you didn't know they were a minor!)

Nahh I was clear with the police. That type of stuff needs to be reported. Thankful this stuff had a good ending.
