I would like to see Mayor Lewis. I personally can't stand him. How he steals all that gold to make a statue, but would let the town rot. And especially how he treats Marnie. He is corrupt and scummy.
He's more annoying than toxic. His community center speech at the end just confirmed for me that he actually cares about Pelican Town...unlike a certain purple short wearing monster.
Pierre also has the additional stress of his home life. He's not sure about Abi being his, he suspects Caroline, he even has a secret stash to cope with this. As a fun note there's a mod where you can help the fella out and marry Caroline. What? It was my turn :)
@@sodorart I would too but something about the way he acts with it gives me the vibes that it's drugs or alcohol or something along those lines. The way he freaks out and talks about it makes it seem like it's a little more scandalous or life-ruining than just a "rainy day fund," but of course, he could just think of it as life-ruining even when it isn't and that's why he acts that way.
@noonespecial7730 to me it seems more like if he feels he has to get away either for himself from a cheating wife or he has to close the shop he has the money to get his family out of there and make a new start at an other place. Of course he is upset if some stranger even if they are a close friend went poking around his room and found where he keep the "in case everything goes to sh!t" stash he has every right to be upset since it could be his family safety or farmer friend might be a thief to steal it or a gossip who will spread lies about him. I could think of others that are not about anything, but it could be he's just thinking of where can he change the stash to and are we going to tell anyone and just ends up being thinking of all the bad possible and impossible events that could happen like an anxiety attack.
I think both Pierre and Caroline are super old fashioned and believe certain things are right and proper. So having a daughter who is exploring new things would be a bit stressful for them, though they should do their best to support Abigail.
To be fair, for the 6th heart event. Pierre and Caroline split cooking at times, since she does the house chores all day, and Pierre works all day. Abby should help with dinner every once in a while while she's doing online classes and living at home rent free, you'd think doing one chore with your mom's help at that, wouldn't be the end of the world. Yeah, maybe they don't get along but they definitely don't make her cook because she's a girl, considering Pierre has lines about him making dinner. I don't consider his dialogue misogynistic, maybe he's just concerned because it's you know, a graveyard. I would think Pierre could be superstitious, or just find it odd to spend time there. Especially since they likely don't have any family buried there. He's probably more worried for her safety just being out at night. [Even though Pelican town is generally safe, aside from our 14 heart event with her?]
@@smcp01 I agree wholeheartedly! Abigail is a grown adult, why shouldn't she offer to help with dinner? She doesn't work and Caroline even states that she doesn't really care about her online classes. Like yeah, do your part in the household!
alsooo I imagine that pierre is funding abigails college education. I dont believe abigail has any source of income (I may be wrong-) and believe sometimes they just need help around the store. Im surprised that pierre doesnt make her be the front of the store. I think him asking her to help out with dinner isnt even too bad considering he could make her watch the store for rent and schooling.
Correct, there's a cutscene where Caroline states that they're paying for all of her schooling and Abigail says "You don't need to throw that in my face, I appreciate it". Helping with dinner is the bare minimum
Yeah she doesn't really have a job (she says she takes online school) so that means her parents feed her, pay for her pet and give her money for all the stuff she wants.
it's interesting to note also that caroline sometimes complains about pierre working at events AND YET she doesn't seem to be helping much with the shop. i think she is in the shelves sometimes (restocking?) but she never mans the counter. she has nothing better to do than complain about abigail and drink tea ig

@@sodorart It would be cool to add a heart event were Pierre reveales he doesn't trust anyone else to run the store while he's taking some time off(I think we see Abby in the store, presumably working) the farmer convinces Pierre to trust his family and then after for 2 days a week either Caroline or Abby will be behind the counter at the shop and Pierre will be out walking and conversing with the villagers.
Caroline maintains their greenhouse and helps Eveline with the gardens on sunny days while also hosting the Tuesday workout session that the women of the Valley attend, so it's not like she's never doing anything. She's also likely responsible for maintaining the shrine to Yoba, despite not being religious. Sounds to me that Caroline is simply more of a community-oriented person, helping and socializing with the older generation (which also helps Pierre, good PR for their store). She's also more open-minded about Abigail compared to Pierre, as she actively questions her own viewpoints regarding her daughter's behaviour when you talk to her. It's also completely normal for a parent to fuss over their child and to have disagreements. Parenting is a difficult responsibility, and there's a fine line between supporting and enabling. And she's absolutely right to dislike Pierre commercializing holidays and events, as they're meant to be community-oriented, a time for friends and family to get together. He can take a day off to spend it with his family, instead of working a booth. Remember that Pierre works all day every day, except on Wednesdays, and then works those days too once Joja leaves town. It's highly probable that Pierre's relationship with Abigail is so strained because he never actually spends any time with her.
Thank you! He's reall6 not that bad, and the Pierre-hate gets tiring. People give Caroline so much slack, despite being much harder on her daughter than him. Though, i think some of it is group-think. Hating on Pierre is one of those things the community shares as a kinda funny meme.
Pierre wouldn't be that bad if he didn't take full credit for produce you sell him. He's actively lying to his customers to boost sales. That's extremely shady business practice and disrespectful to you, the player.
I'm one of those people who never really hated Pierre. At most, I dislike how he takes credit for the crops I grow, but I overall thought he wasn't too horrible. I kinda always saw him as more...obsessed with work instead of money hungry. When I say obsessed with work, I don't mean it in a way where he enjoys it because of points you actually brought up in this very video. He just seemed like someone who was desperate to keep his store alive. Caroline also had a piece of dialogue at the Flower Dance that also made me believe this: "I wish Pierre would spend this time with the family...” I do appreciate you making this video about Pierre because I always felt like he was never as bad as people say he is. He's not perfect and still has some issues, but there are worse characters in the game, in my opinion.
@@sodorart I would have to go with Clint as one of the worst characters. I'm not sure if I'd go all the way to call him a stalker like other people, but I really don't like how depressing Clint can be. He wants to gather the courage to ask Emily out, but he never really does. He mopes about, but doesn't really do anything about it. And as far as heart events go, he's not like a lot of the other characters. When you build friendships with the other villagers, they're not the same person they were when you met them. They went through some sort of change. In my opinion, Clint is one of those characters who remains the same, no matter how close you get with him. I also don't like how he tries to flirt with you at the movies if you're the female farmer.. I can understand why a lot of people hate Lewis, but I simply don't feel any particular way about him. I used to actually dislike Haley a lot, but ever since I watched your In Defense video on her, my opinion has changed. I suppose I have never been too fond of Demetrius because of his overprotective nature towards Maru, and his relationship with his step-son, Sebastian, is not the best. I actually think it is worse than Abigail's relationship with her father(?) Pierre. From what I have witnessed in dialogue, mainly from Demetrius and Sebastian, Demetrius does seem to have some sort of favoritism between Maru and Sebastian. But who knows? Maybe there's something deeper and misunderstood with him?
Pierre owns a small store in a small town were a megacorp just arrived. Also, to be fair, there are also dialogues were people tell you that they bought something from Pierre's and he told them the farmer (us) grew it, it changes according to how many hearts you have with him if I am not mistaken. About a redemption arc, he has one, he punches Morris, that's enough redenption in my books.
It's funny, but I've never really had a problem with Pierre. It kind of surprised me to hear how much he's hated. I mean he's always running the store solo. Caroline never helps. Is the solo Breadwinner for the family and is trying to keep the store open in a direct competition with somebody who has way larger Bank coffers than he does. Even the whole scene where he wanted to charge so much for Organic goods smacked of desperation to me. I also don't agree that Caroline couldn't work. She's always walking around and taking the day off. Why not put that time into farming as well? Look how much change our one single farmer did for the entire community. Anyway interesting video.
tbh i do think that pierre is being truthful when he says that Caroline is asking for abigail's help. she knows that pierre is busy and i would definitely say that even though Caroline cares about Abigail, she is not the best mother. she often criticizes abigail and talks behind her back. it seems that they have an okay relationship but i would say it's definitely caroline who is more critical of abby
I actually like Pierre mainly from a character and world perspective, not everyone is nice and sweet all the time, having a more "grey" character helps with the balance, and it's not like he's a monster or anything, he's a flawed person
YES! Also, if you are nice to him he is nice to you, wich is how people operate in the real world. To me he was always just a normal shopkeeper and I honestly never saw his letters as anything more than a immersive way the game has to tell you about some of it's mechanics.
I like Pierre specifically because he is lame and kinda sucks. He's real for a small town. Since everyone recognizes my icon lol, I can also say that he actually reminds me of Saki Konishi's family. They also run a store that's being run out of business by a big box corporation and when you head into Saki's palace you overhear her father berating her for working at Junes and betraying their family. This is almost certainly what would have happened if Abigail had started working for Joja. I would bet that a lot of Stardew is inspired by Persona 4 in this way. As soon as I realized Pierre was the community's designated hatesink I realized I would have to kind of like him lol. He's not necessarily a good person but otoh I don't think Caroline is one either. Pierre suspects Abigail isn't his daughter and he would be justified in leaving if he wanted to, but instead he stays and provides for her anyway. In that way he's already a better parent than the Wizard who is an aberrant and kind of selfish personality for having an affair with Caroline in the first place. Pierre is just a very real personality. Just a not so bright schlub who made some not so great choices but is doing his best to stand by his wife and fostered kid. He already knows Abigail isn't his but he decided to stick with her anyway, that takes guts. He reminds me of my dad in some ways in that my dad also is innocently narrow minded and has a hard time conceiving of other people's viewpoints. Pierre is doing what he thinks is right for his family. I feel sorry for Abigail being bullied a bit but she's allowed to stay at home for free to play vidya and take online college courses. I'm at a point in my life where I'm thinking she could pick up some slack around the house and her father's anxiety would go away a bit. In some ways marrying Abigail is an optimal social strat. She gets to have a place outside her family and the store, Pierre knows his kid is being provided for by a wealthy landowner, and then grandchildren arrive sooner than later. I think Caroline is much worse person than Pierre by far. The worst Pierre does is lie about your produce, Caroline went behind his back and cheated.
I've actually left some comments on various posts on Reddit about some of the game's nore hated characters, especially Pierre. Big topics on him being his business practices, him and Caroline, and wondering if Caroline cheated on him with Abigail being the result. Literally every play through of mine, he's one of the first characters I befriend(he's generally easy to get to and, while fried calamari is annoying to get, he does like most flowers). I've even been called a Pierre simp(my brother wants me to marry him on a modded save), but I've noticed that a good handful of people over on Tumblr seem to either be neutral to or even like him while the majority of people over on Reddit hate him.

@@sodorart And what really sucks is that(and I've seen people post about this) there are probably a lot posts on the Stardew Valley subreddit that have actual effort put into them, but they end up being buried by posts hating on Pierre(actual post I do remember seeing).
The only problem that I have with Pierre is his obsession with money. I agree that Pierre is most likely stress about his family but of all the villager, he's the most persistent about money by far. Also, one line of dialogue he has made me feel like he envied more Joja than he hates it. That he wants to be this overwhelming corporation with this huge power but again that might just be the stress 🤔. Also, the line in Abigail cutscene makes a lot of sense for me. This is just a father worry about his daughter walking around in a cemetery at night. Controlling yes but not sexist
I have to go a little easier on the guy after I ran into a dialogue where he admits he's upset and frustrated that he can't just be satisfied with how he's doing financially- he doesn't WANT to be super greedy. Seems he's got a mental health issue forcing his compulsive greedy attitude.
I participate in the fall harvest competition every year just to make sure he doesn’t win. Maybe it’s time I reexamined my assumptions. I still won’t sell my produce to him so he can take credit for my labors.
I have never really understood the attitude some people have about stardew valley characters. I mean it's always either this is the best character ever and I love them or this is the worst character ever, they're literally evil and killed my family. XD I wish I could see some in between sometimes but there never seems to be any.

I have never thought that Pierre is a bad person. I kinda understand his letters, he's trying his best to advertize his products, working hard on his store, he's trying to compete with a corporation and has a family. I mean, he is an adult and we all know the concerns that come with adulthood.
Oh my goodness, THANK YOU for making this video! I've been saying this stuff for years! It drives me nuts how stressed Pierre is all the time, yet Abby and Caroline barely lift a finger to help him out. Also, those advertisements are literally to be helpful to new players. Why are people triggered by them? Almost everyone ends up needing those items anyway. Lastly, it bummed me out when 1.5 came out and we got the cutscene where Pierre wants to sell your gold-star produce at 10,000G. It seems CA caved in to the fans' perception of what they saw Pierre as, rather than sticking to who Pierre actually was at his inception. Sure, the guy thinks about money a lot, but that cutscene just pushed that character trait to stupidly comical levels. 1.0 Pierre would never do such a thing.

I was actually surprised about how much people hated Pierre when i started to move into the stardew community. In game i saw him as my bestie. I would stop buy the shop, get some seeds, and go behind the counter to have a little chat. He seems like a good dude and Wednesday closing wasnt a big problem. I was just get seeds on a different day. I really liked this video.
I am the only person I know of who likes Pierre. Is he perfect? No. But I've always been weirdly fond of him. Demetrius, Lewis, and Clint piss me off way more.
Mildly off topic but I wonder how many ppl would realistically buy from clint/town really needs a blacksmith anyways versus "this kinda farming/combat sim requires a blacksmith that can upgrade your tools"/it was like that in the og harvest moon, other than marlon and maybe abby since she goes in the mines sometimes or sebastian, if not the kids digging up dirt and finding geodes but i don't think they'd have a lot of allowance to open up a geode

In my opinion, words are kinda cheap but actions matter the most. In that case I understand why Pierre deserve redemtion rather than Lewis. I mean Pierre isn't really do that much for her daughter, wife, or for the town what is that bad which is also bad if you ignore them, but come on Lewis almost doomed the economy in the valley for a statue and convince Marnie to keep their relationship in a secret what I don't understand at all rather than hate that. And now that you mention it, Morris really is worse than Pierre, At least Pierre doesn't talking crap and insult him in front of EVERYONE like Morris. If you fight against someone physically, logically, etc. because, you have rival or enemy is not a bad thing in my point of wiew, but if you wanna fight then at least do that fair and square and still treat each other with a little respect, if you just use your connections and the other weaknesses as an adventage like a coward then it's nothing but pathetic. So yeah, you made me realize that Morris is actually much worse.
In regards to Pierre not telling that you're the provider of goods he sells, at least for me I've heard villagers talking about some not great quality stuff I've sold the shop but I never get the blame for the bad stuff only Pierre.

That entire family is a mess, to be honest. Joja arriving's only made it more obvious I guess what bugs me the most is that the farmer would probably be willing to work with Pierre to help out his family. I mean we even buy Pam and Penny a WHOLE HOUSE aside from fixing all of the broken local infrastructure. Instead Pierre goes around pretending all the mid quality crops were from the farmer and all the good quality came from him, hurting the farmer's reputation. If I'm playing a game that's all about community, that doesn't make me very likely to throw a bone to the former boxer turned greedy shopkeep
NGL, Pierre just seems like a normal everyday person, Abigail seems a little lazy, and Caroline seems to be stuck in the past. (PS, the reason I say Abigail seems a little lazy is because she doesn't help with the shop, cooking, cleaning, and she lives there free)
He's not really that bad but he does take advantage of being the only store in town. he also tries to suck up to the Governor when he comes to town for the Luau buy giving him some expensive Booze in hopes of gaining Favors from him. that quest he gives you to give him 24 Gold Vegetables he tries to sell them for triple the price. But any of the Villagers should be aware that there's one Farm in town. I hate that he's closed on Wednesdays because I might need to buy something on Wednesday and if that's the case I have to go to Joja Mart for it. but I hate Lewis way more then I do Pierre. Mostly because I wish Marnie was a Marriage Option and he acts like he's got to sneak around with her for his Political Career which I think has Peaked because he's been Mayor for so long.
I like making fun of Pierre sometimes, because I think he fails a bit, but I think it makes sense. He is worried about losing everything to a greedy large corporation at the same time he wishes to have more to provide for his family. I think we all have met people who are like him before.
I don't even find Pierre's graveyard cutscene to be all the wild, tbh. It's late at night and they live in a world where the existence of monsters (including ghosts) is common knowledge, with monster activity being known to increase at night. Why would any parent be okay with his only daughter, adult or not, chilling by a cemetary? Especially since specter/ghost monsters exist along with undead mummies. I feel like it is also worth noting that despite the financial issues Pierre faces due to JoJa-Mart, investing in Abigail's education is still a priority for him since she has made it clear that she is still actively in school. College tuition is not cheap. I feel like a misogynist wouldn't bother funding his daughter's education to begin with (or would cut it the second money became tight) and would instead pressure her to stay home or run the family business. Honestly, the first time I saw that graveyard cutscene, Abigail came off as bratty to me.

While Pierre can be a little bit of a jerk this kind of makes him seem more understandable. It'd be interesting to see a mod that helps flesh him out some like this video did. To kind of go off his worry about Abigail's interests there's a theory in someone's video that people are hesitant about women being adventurers was thanks to the mysterious M. Jasper possibly being a woman that ended up dying in the mines or on an adventure at some point. While you already pointed out Pierre isn't actually mad about Abigail being a girl going out on adventures(just the fact she's his daughter & should probably come home cause it's night out & her mom wants some help) he could probably still be worried thanks to what happened to Jasper.
Abby's 6 heart-event sounds more like he is worried and stressed out, like we know he cooks sometimes even after he is working. Abigail doesn't need to do a lot in her parents house even if she is in her 20s, it wouldn't hurt her if she helps her parents in the house like her dad works the store almost 24/7 and her mom runs a household. My mom is the same like Pierre in that sence, just because your a adult doesn't mean you can do dangerous things, especially if your parents pay everything for you you can at least help them aroud sometimes let let them know were your going and how late you will be back.
Caroline annoys me vis a vis Abigail. She does nothing but peck at her daughter. No wonder they fight all the time. The only thing I don't like about Pierre is him taking credit for things I did. That really rubs me the wrong way. Other than that, he's basically helpful - sends me random rebate checks, usually when I don't really need the money - but whatevs. He'll give you information that helps you out here and there. He basically wants to be Joja Mart himself, so he's got a greedy streak - but it's not a mile wide. I think it's a shame that Caroline or Abigail couldn't take a register shift now and then.
The thing is, why doesn't Pierre change after the community center then? You can argue hes just desperate due to Joja and is behind on bills and honestly i agree and never knew that. Pre-community center Pierre i actually feel kinda bad for now. You did change my mind on pre-community center Pierre. But what about post community center? Pierre has a complete monopoly on groceries which are an essential part of life. Every single person in town (minus Linus) only have him to shop at now. Post community center Pierre should be absolutely loaded yet hes still cosplaying Mr.Krabs. He still lies to people and steals your credit. He still spends no time with his family on holidays. And worst of all, he now spends Wednesdays working even more. People see this as a good thing bc "yay i can shop now on Wednesdays" but story wise, he already spends no time with his wife and even less with his daughter. They feel neglected yet this guy decides to spend another day behind a desk to get even more money or sets up another booth during a community event to get every penny he can. I forget which item but istg i saw him mark up a price up by 41.66 times (i remember calculating it bc it was so laughable). Marking up is fine but MAN, 42x markup is outright insane. The markups on prices are also another reason i dislike him. I understand putting prices up, that's normal and necessary to make a profit. But Pierre goes MEGA overboard with it. The lying and stealing credit already pisses me off because i view that as extremely disrespectful to the player. You spend a fortune (earlygame) to fix the community bus to travel to a desert and buy extremely expensive seeds, spend half a season taking care of it only to sell it and he claims he made that starfruit. This disrespect alone makes me heavily dislike him. The greed is just the layer on top. Pierre is not evil. I dont completely hate Pierre but he is scummy and a bad family man. Providing for your family does not make you a good family man btw, for those arguing that, it makes you a man.
Hmmm I think after the CC is fixed up and Joja Mart closes, that does provide a little more security for him as he is now the only grocer in Pelican Town and I think he is faced with a choice: Start putting that extra money to good use (spend more time with family, take days off) or Keep squirreling money. Pierre mentions that a long term goal of his is to have more stores, and I think he might be on the path of becoming the next Joja Mart manager (so to speak) where greed fuels him, rather than necessity. It would be really interested if there were cutscenes or dialogue where he makes changes and spends more time with family. It feels like an oversight for sure :(
Is there a trigger or something that makes Pierre be honest if it's your produce? I've received dialogue where the villagers say something like "I saw a cheese you made at Pierre's, I bought it" Is that after Joja closes or is that just with produce he can't claim like animal products? My parents would have a problem with me being out after dark, especially in a graveyard at Aibgails age so I never found that dialogue too on the nose. I actually found Abby's react more so to be cringe, if you're eating the dinner being expected to help isn't a gender specific thing.
Could you do a character analysis about Demetrius? He seems to get really much hate, and although i don't think he is i.e. the greatest father, i don't think he is THAT bad
Demetrius comes off as autistic to me, especially with how often he puts his foot in his mouth and has a hard time reading social cues. Though TBF, he’ll also realize his blunders.
TBF I don't like Pierre for whatever he is hiding from Caroline on his heart event, we don't know what it is so maybe it's nothing serious but with the farmer reaction I thought of the worst like d rug or something. The lying to everyone else isn't helping but I don't dislike him as much I dislike Lewis. As for the advertising I didn't really saw him as money hungry, more like hey that's the tutorial and guidance you need in the game

I think a lot of people will say certain characters are too "uncanny" because they ask weird questions, but it's a way to teach the player. I always found the more nuanced and morally grey characters to be the reason I love this game as much as I do. Like Pierre, Caroline, Shane, or Demetrius. They’re far from perfect, but the fact that they’re imperfect means they have some of the most realistic and impactful dialogue in the game. Demetrius isn’t a good dad, but he’s an obsessive workaholic scientist. Pierre steals credit for our work, but he’s desperately trying to keep his family out of bankruptcy. Caroline likely cheated on Pierre, but her relationship with Abigail is such a grounded one. Shane’s battle with depression and alcohol… well we all know the cliff scene. We all know how real that was. I never got the hate, I love the fact that there’s nuance to the characters. Also, the valley would be really boring without any drama, just saying. All that being said, fuçķ Lewis. Also, while I don’t get the hate, I would be lying if I said I never participated in it. It’s just such a funny meme to hate on some of these guys.
I genuinely Don't find Pierre bad? I never found him ok so first thing he is greedy? Is he? He is a shop ownwr ANY shope owner wants to sell their goods? And my dumb ass would have never knew we can get a bigger backpack if he didn’t send me letter? @noonespecial7730 to me it seems more like if he feels he has to get away either for himself from a cheating wife or he has to close the shop he has the money to get his family out of there and make a new start at an other place. Of course he is upset if some stranger even if they are a close friend went poking around his room and found where he keep the "in case everything goes to sh!t" stash he has every right to be upset since it could be his family safety or farmer friend might be a thief to steal it or a gossip who will spread lies about him. I could think of others that are not about anything, but it could be he's just thinking of where can he change the stash to and are we going to tell anyone and just ends up being thinking of all the bad possible and impossible events that could happen like an anxiety attack.
I think both Pierre and Caroline are super old fashioned and believe certain things are right and proper. So having a daughter who is exploring new things would be a bit stressful for them, though they should do their best to support Abigail.

To be fair, for the 6th heart event. Pierre and Caroline split cooking at times, since she does the house chores all day, and Pierre works all day. Abby should help with dinner every once in a while while she's doing online classes and living at home rent free, you'd think doing one chore with your mom's help at that, wouldn't be the end of the world. Yeah, maybe they don't get along but they definitely don't make her cook because she's a girl, considering Pierre has lines about him making dinner.
I don't consider his dialogue misogynistic, maybe he's just concerned because it's you know, a graveyard. I would think Pierre could be superstitious, or just find it odd to spend time there. Especially since they likely don't have any family buried there. He's probably more worried for her safety just being out at night.

Correct, there's a cutscene where Caroline states that they're paying for all of her schooling and Abigail says "You don't need to throw that in my face, I appreciate it". Helping with dinner is the bare minimum
Yeah she doesn't really have a job (she says she takes online school) so that means her parents feed her, pay for her pet and give her money for all the stuff she wants.
it's interesting to note also that caroline sometimes complains about pierre working at events AND YET she doesn't seem to be helping much with the shop. i think she is in the shelves sometimes (restocking?) but she never mans the counter. she has nothing better to do than complain about abigail and drink tea ig

@@sodorart It would be cool to add a heart event were Pierre reveales he doesn't trust anyone else to run the store while he's taking some time off(I think we see Abby in the store, presumably working) the farmer convinces Pierre to trust his family and then after for 2 days a week either Caroline or Abby will be behind the counter at the shop and Pierre will be out walking and conversing with the villagers.
The one who helps restocking is Abigail actually, I don't think I ever saw Caroline helping.
Caroline maintains their greenhouse and helps Eveline with the gardens on sunny days while also hosting the Tuesday workout session that the women of the Valley attend, so it's not like she's never doing anything. She's also likely responsible for maintaining the shrine to Yoba, despite not being religious.
Sounds to me that Caroline is simply more of a community-oriented person, helping and socializing with the older generation (which also helps Pierre, good PR for their store). She's also more open-minded about Abigail compared to Pierre, as she actively questions her own viewpoints regarding her daughter's behaviour when you talk to her. It's also completely normal for a parent to fuss over their child and to have disagreements. Parenting is a difficult responsibility, and there's a fine line between supporting and enabling.
And she's absolutely right to dislike Pierre commercializing holidays and events, as they're meant to be community-oriented, a time for friends and family to get together. He can take a day off to spend it with his family, instead of working a booth.
Remember that Pierre works all day every day, except on Wednesdays, and then works those days too once Joja leaves town. It's highly probable that Pierre's relationship with Abigail is so strained because he never actually spends any time with her.
Thank you! He's reall6 not that bad, and the Pierre-hate gets tiring. People give Caroline so much slack, despite being much harder on her daughter than him. Though, i think some of it is group-think. Hating on Pierre is one of those things the community shares as a kinda funny meme.

I'm one of those people who never really hated Pierre. At most, I dislike how he takes credit for the crops I grow, but I overall thought he wasn't too horrible. I kinda always saw him as more...obsessed with work instead of money hungry. When I say obsessed with work, I don't mean it in a way where he enjoys it because of points you actually brought up in this very video. He just seemed like someone who was desperate to keep his store alive. Caroline also had a piece of dialogue at the Flower Dance that also made me believe this: "I wish Pierre would spend this time with the family...”
I do appreciate you making this video about Pierre because I always felt like he was never as bad as people say he is. He's not perfect and still has some issues, but there are worse characters in the game, in my opinion.

@@sodorart I would have to go with Clint as one of the worst characters. I'm not sure if I'd go all the way to call him a stalker like other people, but I really don't like how depressing Clint can be. He wants to gather the courage to ask Emily out, but he never really does. He mopes about, but doesn't really do anything about it. And as far as heart events go, he's not like a lot of the other characters. When you build friendships with the other villagers, they're not the same person they were when you met them. They went through some sort of change. In my opinion, Clint is one of those characters who remains the same, no matter how close you get with him. I also don't like how he tries to flirt with you at the movies if you're the female farmer..
I can understand why a lot of people hate Lewis, but I simply don't feel any particular way about him. I used to actually dislike Haley a lot, but ever since I watched your In Defense video on her, my opinion has changed.
I suppose I have never been too fond of Demetrius because of his overprotective nature towards Maru, and his relationship with his step-son, Sebastian, is not the best. I actually think it is worse than Abigail's relationship with her father(?) Pierre. From what I have witnessed in dialogue, mainly from Demetrius and Sebastian, Demetrius does seem to have some sort of favoritism between Maru and Sebastian. But who knows? Maybe there's something deeper and misunderstood with him?

Pierre owns a small store in a small town were a megacorp just arrived. Also, to be fair, there are also dialogues were people tell you that they bought something from Pierre's and he told them the farmer (us) grew it, it changes according to how many hearts you have with him if I am not mistaken.
About a redemption arc, he has one, he punches Morris, that's enough redenption in my books.
It's funny, but I've never really had a problem with Pierre. It kind of surprised me to hear how much he's hated. I mean he's always running the store solo. Caroline never helps. Is the solo Breadwinner for the family and is trying to keep the store open in a direct competition with somebody who has way larger Bank coffers than he does. Even the whole scene where he wanted to charge so much for Organic goods smacked of desperation to me. I also don't agree that Caroline couldn't work. She's always walking around and taking the day off. Why not put that time into farming as well? Look how much change our one single farmer did for the entire community. Anyway interesting video.

I actually like Pierre mainly from a character and world perspective, not everyone is nice and sweet all the time, having a more "grey" character helps with the balance, and it's not like he's a monster or anything, he's a flawed person
YES! Also, if you are nice to him he is nice to you, wich is how people operate in the real world. To me he was always just a normal shopkeeper and I honestly never saw his letters as anything more than a immersive way the game has to tell you about some of it's mechanics.

I like Pierre specifically because he is lame and kinda sucks. He's real for a small town. Since everyone recognizes my icon lol, I can also say that he actually reminds me of Saki Konishi's family. They also run a store that's being run out of business by a big box corporation and when you head into Saki's palace you overhear her father berating her for working at Junes and betraying their family. This is almost certainly what would have happened if Abigail had started working for Joja. I would bet that a lot of Stardew is inspired by Persona 4 in this way.
As soon as I realized Pierre was the community's designated hatesink I realized I would have to kind of like him lol. He's not necessarily a good person but otoh I don't think Caroline is one either. Pierre suspects Abigail isn't his daughter and he would be justified in leaving if he wanted to, but instead he stays and provides for her anyway. In that way he's already a better parent than the Wizard who is an aberrant and kind of selfish personality for having an affair with Caroline in the first place.
Pierre is just a very real personality. Just a not so bright schlub who made some not so great choices but is doing his best to stand by his wife and fostered kid. He already knows Abigail isn't his but he decided to stick with her anyway, that takes guts. He reminds me of my dad in some ways in that my dad also is innocently narrow minded and has a hard time conceiving of other people's viewpoints.
Pierre is doing what he thinks is right for his family. I feel sorry for Abigail being bullied a bit but she's allowed to stay at home for free to play vidya and take online college courses. I'm at a point in my life where I'm thinking she could pick up some slack around the house and her father's anxiety would go away a bit.
In some ways marrying Abigail is an optimal social strat. She gets to have a place outside her family and the store, Pierre knows his kid is being provided for by a wealthy landowner, and then grandchildren arrive sooner than later.
I think Caroline is much worse person than Pierre by far. The worst Pierre does is lie about your produce, Caroline went behind his back and cheated.

I've actually left some comments on various posts on Reddit about some of the game's nore hated characters, especially Pierre. Big topics on him being his business practices, him and Caroline, and wondering if Caroline cheated on him with Abigail being the result. Literally every play through of mine, he's one of the first characters I befriend(he's generally easy to get to and, while fried calamari is annoying to get, he does like most flowers).
I've even been called a Pierre simp(my brother wants me to marry him on a modded save), but I've noticed that a good handful of people over on Tumblr seem to either be neutral to or even like him while the majority of people over on Reddit hate him.

The only problem that I have with Pierre is his obsession with money. I agree that Pierre is most likely stress about his family but of all the villager, he's the most persistent about money by far. Also, one line of dialogue he has made me feel like he envied more Joja than he hates it. That he wants to be this overwhelming corporation with this huge power but again that might just be the stress 🤔. Also, the line in Abigail cutscene makes a lot of sense for me. This is just a father worry about his daughter walking around in a cemetery at night. Controlling yes but not sexist
I have to go a little easier on the guy after I ran into a dialogue where he admits he's upset and frustrated that he can't just be satisfied with how he's doing financially- he doesn't WANT to be super greedy. Seems he's got a mental health issue forcing his compulsive greedy attitude.

Oh my goodness, THANK YOU for making this video! I've been saying this stuff for years! It drives me nuts how stressed Pierre is all the time, yet Abby and Caroline barely lift a finger to help him out.
Also, those advertisements are literally to be helpful to new players. Why are people triggered by them? Almost everyone ends up needing those items anyway.
Lastly, it bummed me out when 1.5 came out and we got the cutscene where Pierre wants to sell your gold-star produce at 10,000G. It seems CA caved in to the fans' perception of what they saw Pierre as, rather than sticking to who Pierre actually was at his inception. Sure, the guy thinks about money a lot, but that cutscene just pushed that character trait to stupidly comical levels. 1.0 Pierre would never do such a thing.

In my opinion, words are kinda cheap but actions matter the most. In that case I understand why Pierre deserve redemtion rather than Lewis. I mean Pierre isn't really do that much for her daughter, wife, or for the town what is that bad which is also bad if you ignore them, but come on Lewis almost doomed the economy in the valley for a statue and convince Marnie to keep their relationship in a secret what I don't understand at all rather than hate that. And now that you mention it, Morris really is worse than Pierre, At least Pierre doesn't talking crap and insult him in front of EVERYONE like Morris. I guess what bugs me the most is that the farmer would probably be willing to work with Pierre to help out his family. I mean we even buy Pam and Penny a WHOLE HOUSE aside from fixing all of the broken local infrastructure. Instead Pierre goes around pretending all the mid quality crops were from the farmer and all the good quality came from him, hurting the farmer's reputation. If I'm playing a game that's all about community, that doesn't make me very likely to throw a bone to the former boxer turned greedy shopkeep

NGL, Pierre just seems like a normal everyday person, Abigail seems a little lazy, and Caroline seems to be stuck in the past.
(PS, the reason I say Abigail seems a little lazy is because she doesn't help with the shop, cooking, cleaning, and she lives there free)
He's not really that bad but he does take advantage of being the only store in town. he also tries to suck up to the Governor when he comes to town for the Luau buy giving him some expensive Booze in hopes of gaining Favors from him.
that quest he gives you to give him 24 Gold Vegetables he tries to sell them for triple the price.
But any of the Villagers should be aware that there's one Farm in town.
I hate that he's closed on Wednesdays because I might need to buy something on Wednesday and if that's the case I have to go to Joja Mart for it.

I like making fun of Pierre sometimes, because I think he fails a bit, but I think it makes sense. He is worried about losing everything to a greedy large corporation at the same time he wishes to have more to provide for his family. I think we all have met people who are like him before.
I don't even find Pierre's graveyard cutscene to be all the wild, tbh. It's late at night and they live in a world where the existence of monsters (including ghosts) is common knowledge, with monster activity being known to increase at night. Why would any parent be okay with his only daughter, adult or not, chilling by a cemetary? Especially since specter/ghost monsters exist along with undead mummies.
I feel like it is also worth noting that despite the financial issues Pierre faces due to JoJa-Mart, investing in Abigail's education is still a priority for him since she has made it clear that she is still actively in school. College tuition is not cheap. I feel like a misogynist wouldn't bother funding his daughter's education to begin with (or would cut it the second money became tight) and would instead pressure her to stay home or run the family business.
Honestly, the first time I saw that graveyard cutscene, Abigail came off as bratty to me.

While Pierre can be a little bit of a jerk this kind of makes him seem more understandable. It'd be interesting to see a mod that helps flesh him out some like this video did.
To kind of go off his worry about Abigail's interests there's a theory in someone's video that people are hesitant about women being adventurers was thanks to the mysterious M. Jasper possibly being a woman that ended up dying in the mines or on an adventure at some point. While you already pointed out Pierre isn't actually mad about Abigail being a girl going out on adventures(just the fact she's his daughter & should probably come home cause it's night out & her mom wants some help) he could probably still be worried thanks to what happened to Jasper.

Abby's 6 heart-event sounds more like he is worried and stressed out, like we know he cooks sometimes even after he is working.
Abigail doesn't need to do a lot in her parents house even if she is in her 20s, it wouldn't hurt her if she helps her parents in the house like her dad works the store almost 24/7 and her mom runs a household.
My mom is the same like Pierre in that sence, just because your a adult doesn't mean you can do dangerous things, especially if your parents pay everything for you you can at least help them aroud sometimes let let them know were your going and how late you will be back.

Caroline annoys me vis a vis Abigail. She does nothing but peck at her daughter. No wonder they fight all the time. The only thing I don't like about Pierre is him taking credit for things I did. That really rubs me the wrong way. Other than that, he's basically helpful - sends me random rebate checks, usually when I don't really need the money - but whatevs. He'll give you information that helps you out here and there. He basically wants to be Joja Mart himself, so he's got a greedy streak - but it's not a mile wide. I think it's a shame that Caroline or Abigail couldn't take a register shift now and then.

The thing is, why doesn't Pierre change after the community center then? You can argue hes just desperate due to Joja and is behind on bills and honestly i agree and never knew that. Pre-community center Pierre i actually feel kinda bad for now. You did change my mind on pre-community center Pierre.
But what about post community center? Pierre has a complete monopoly on groceries which are an essential part of life. Every single person in town (minus Linus) only have him to shop at now. Post community center Pierre should be absolutely loaded yet hes still cosplaying Mr.Krabs. He still lies to people and steals your credit. He still spends no time with his family on holidays. And worst of all, he now spends Wednesdays working even more. People see this as a good thing bc "yay i can shop now on Wednesdays" but story wise, he already spends no time with his wife and even less with his daughter. They feel neglected yet this guy decides to spend another day behind a desk to get even more money or sets up another booth during a community event to get every penny he can.
I forget which item but istg i saw him mark up a price up by 41.66 times (i remember calculating it bc it was so laughable). Marking up is fine but MAN, 42x markup is outright insane. The markups on prices are also another reason i dislike him. I understand putting prices up, that's normal and necessary to make a profit. But Pierre goes MEGA overboard with it.
The lying and stealing credit already pisses me off because i view that as extremely disrespectful to the player. You spend a fortune (earlygame) to fix the community bus to travel to a desert and buy extremely expensive seeds, spend half a season taking care of it only to sell it and he claims he made that starfruit. This disrespect alone makes me heavily dislike him. The greed is just the layer on top.
Pierre is not evil. I dont completely hate Pierre but he is scummy and a bad family man. Providing for your family does not make you a good family man btw, for those arguing that, it makes you a man.
Hmmm I think after the CC is fixed up and Joja Mart closes, that does provide a little more security for him as he is now the only grocer in Pelican Town and I think he is faced with a choice: Start putting that extra money to good use (spend more time with family, take days off) or Keep squirreling money. Pierre mentions that a long term goal of his is to have more stores, and I think he might be on the path of becoming the next Joja Mart manager (so to speak) where greed fuels him, rather than necessity.
It would be really interested if there were cutscenes or dialogue where he makes changes and spends more time with family. It feels like an oversight for sure :(
Is there a trigger or something that makes Pierre be honest if it's your produce? I've received dialogue where the villagers say something like "I saw a cheese you made at Pierre's, I bought it" Is that after Joja closes or is that just with produce he can't claim like animal products?
My parents would have a problem with me being out after dark, especially in a graveyard at Aibgails age so I never found that dialogue too on the nose. I actually found Abby's react more so to be cringe, if you're eating the dinner being expected to help isn't a gender specific thing.

Demetrius comes off as autistic to me, especially with how often he puts his foot in his mouth and has a hard time reading social cues. Though TBF, he’ll also realize his blunders.

TBF I don't like Pierre for whatever he is hiding from Caroline on his heart event, we don't know what it is so maybe it's nothing serious but with the farmer reaction I thought of the worst like d rug or something. The lying to everyone else isn't helping but I don't dislike him as much I dislike Lewis.
As for the advertising I didn't really saw him as money hungry, more like hey that's the tutorial and guidance you need in the game

The tutorial is a good point! I think a lot of people will say certain characters are too "uncanny" because they ask weird questions, but it's a way to teach the player. So maybe ConcernedApe just has Pierre advertise to teach us, as you said!

I always found the more nuanced and morally grey characters to be the reason I love this game as much as I do. Like Pierre, Caroline, Shane, or Demetrius. They’re far from perfect, but the fact that they’re imperfect means they have some of the most realistic and impactful dialogue in the game. Demetrius isn’t a good dad, but he’s an obsessive workaholic scientist. Pierre steals credit for our work, but he’s desperately trying to keep his family out of bankruptcy. Caroline likely cheated on Pierre, but her relationship with Abigail is such a grounded one. Shane’s battle with depression and alcohol… well we all know the cliff scene. We all know how real that was. I never got the hate, I love the fact that there’s nuance to the characters. Also, the valley would be really boring without any drama, just saying.
All that being said, fuçķ Lewis. Also, while I don’t get the hate, I would be lying if I said I never participated in it. It’s just such a funny meme to hate on some of these guys.

So i think Pierre is a nice character actually. He is hardworking, man works all the time on shop even on festivals,(i feel very pitty for him when he says he wants to smell the spring flowers but cant go out :") so i bring his flowers), he is a caring dad, he also cooks! And with shit ton of Joja mart pressure in his head he is working very hard honestly. He is a good character i donno why ppl hate on him :")
