As a kid who was born in 91 the mighty ducks were confusing. There was the movie about a fictional team, the real nhl team, and the cartoon about alien superhero ducks.
Gotta love the era where Disney owned the Ducks and the California Angels. They created some of the greatest kids movies ever! Needless to say, the 90s was truly a great era for Jersey design.
Depending on who you ask Norm Green had a deal in place to move the North Stars to Anaheim, becoming the Anaheim Stars. But when then NHL got wind Disney was interested in purchasing a franchise, the NHL couldn’t resist the $$$ from the expansion fee, plus having Disney to help grow the league. In turn the NHL cut a deal with Green that allowed him to move the North Stars to any American city for the 93-94 season, which would end up being Dallas.
That intro before the first game made me laugh hysterically. I just imagined some guy sitting stand thinking he's gonna watch a hockey game only to see basiclly disney on ice before the team introduction and is totally confused
I remember as a kid being confused by if the movie was based off of the franchise or vice versa and never really looked it up until I saw your vid, great work!
Love the channel. Me and my buddies spend an unhealthy amount of time discussing uniforms and logos, I’m glad the yt algorithm brought me to your channel.
Honestly one of the best TH-cam channels out there. I love sports and I’m really into fashion too. I have original ducks jersey from the opening night… it was fun to watch as a little kid
I’d like to imagine you’re struggling to get signal at the very top and this is what you chose to watch. 17 minutes in the howling wind clinging onto the side of a mountain watching sideline archive.
This is sooo good!!! Wow! Amazing work here. Keep going, keep creating, and keep defining your style because this is such great work. No doubt this video will blow up
The Mighty Ducks franchise got me into NHL Hockey until the Thrashers came to Atlanta. The Darkwing Duck logo was badass, I'm glad they brought it back recently. D2 is still my favorite movie from The Mighty Ducks series. Great Video.
I remember visiting Calgary Canada when I was a kid as we had family there. We're from Scotland and in Scotland we play a field hockey like sport called Shinty. Think of field hockey but a lot more brutal. Me and my brother got friendly with local kids that played street hockey in the middle of a suburban cul-de-sac. Me and my brother were both good on Rollerblades and both Shinty players. Because of this we were way better a street hockey than any of these kids. I remember explaining to these kids and their parents that me and my brother had never played ice hockey before and they simply didn't believe it. 👍🏼🏴 🇨🇦
Note - the third jersey mention used in seven games was not because of unpopularity, that is how the nhl does third jerseys and no team wears them many games. None of those jerseys were good that year.
Awwwwwww. Nothing about MY favorite Duck (& one-time Philadelphia FLYERS Team Captain) Chris Pronger. I suppose this would be like ME doing a video about Soccer/Football. Kudos, Mate- job well done!
What a lot of people don’t realize is Gary Bettman had a hand in this rebranding of NHL Hockey in non traditional hockey markets. Prior to becoming the commissioner he worked with a lot of owners, soon to be franchisee’s to generate revenue for the league , bolster potential growth in the non traditional hockey markets. Not an easy task since the NBA, and NFL were the popular professional leagues. It’s not a bad move on the leagues part to hire Bettman who was previously very savvy in growing the NBA in non traditional Basketball markets. The Disney company not only saved the league, but regrew the sport of hockey in America.
What's wild is if Mighty Ducks came out a year later, not only would it have done better, but the Ducks would've been in Minneapolis instead of Anaheim. The Minneapolis Mighty Ducks... Instead, the team went to Anaheim which would change the plot for the sequels Also, the original jerseys were straight teal with yellow stripes on the sides, the D2 jerseys came a couple years later And the rebrand after the NHL lockout was a Disney call, as they owned all the logos, and promotional materials due to their trademarks at the time of the sale, which they'd own until 2018, when they reached a agreement with the current owners
Kings fan here. One other note: The Ducks won the Stanley Cup (2007) before the L.A. Kings did (2012) despite the Kings being around 40 years before the Ducks franchise was created.
I was just thinking of this story yesterday but even as a Coyotes fan growing up, I still had Anaheim Ducks gear just because I really liked the team from the movies and their gear was the coolest back then. Sadly, the Coyotes are now in Utah under a new name and the Hockey trend of the 90s and early 2000's just feels over. I loved playing street hocket and watching Rocket Power but that was definitely a moment in time.
As a Sharks fan n growing up watching The Mighty Ducks I didn’t realize Aberman was wearing a Sharks sweater in the 1st movie and Charlie has a Sharks snap back in the 2nd movie until I grew up lol still my go to on Disney+ n love the Jumbo/Getzlaf throw down in the 1st period 🫡🙏🏼👌🏼🔥🔥🔥🔥
I really like the new primarily orange design, but I thought the black and gold jerseys were incredibly generic and boring. If I had it my way, I'd bring back the purple and teal though.
@sideline.archive I'm a Utah Jazz fan, and I agree that the 2004-2010 rebrand was awful. I'd take that back in a heartbeat though in place of whatever the hell they're doing now. Their new design is arguably the worst design in the history of pro sports, using "minimalist" black and white jerseys and hi lighter yellow. Btw, in speaking of Utah, a good idea for a new video might be the Arizona Coyotes relocating to Utah, and having to come up with generic "Utah Hockey Club' jerseys and logos at the last second.
I was the target victim of this whole scheme. I was 5 when mighty ducks came out and next to jurassic park the duck series was my favorite films my dream was to be a NHL player I spent my communion money on a real deal ducks jersey yet my dream never came true my parents never took me ice skating and I grew up to be 5ft 9inch 160lb not that impressive on the ice player wise lol. Pops did take me to a ducks exhibition game in Milwaukee once and I got a duck logo puck ahh great times thank you for this video and showing me how big corporate played me and my parents by grand design lololol
Very Nice video but I would like to point out that the mask wasn't inspired by Darkwing Duck as that mask belongs to Wild Wing from the Mighty Ducks cartoon which had only 1 season in the same year as the release of D3. Wild Wing will, then, now and forever be one of the best Mascots in the NHL imo and defender of the Pond. I was over the moon as a Ducks fan here in the UK as we got the real logo back. We Will always be the Mighty Ducks. "Ducks Fly Together"
Darkwing Duck series was in 1991 though? Two years before the release of the logo. I pulled that fact from an interview with the design team. So who knows! Love a hardcore Ducks fan from the UK! Big up!
Slightly off-topic, but does anyone remember The Mighty Ducks cartoon show? Instead of being like the movie, it was about a bunch of duck people who play hockey (I think there were robots and space travel too).
