90's had the best designs. The blazers, the sonics, the hornets, the raptors, just so much more interesting than what we have today.

While you mention him in passing, I believe Larry Johnson playing for Charlotte was very important in the rise in popularity of Hornets gear. He was an immensely popular college player who won a national title for UNLV, which was the coolest team at the time and seen almost like antiheroes (think college basketball's version of the Raiders). Johnson also had a series of popular shoe commercials where he would dress up like an old lady and school people on the court.
I think all us young people were aware of Charlotte's unique uniforms, but it was Larry Johnson in 1991-92 who made the gear cool and a must-have.

True. While the uniforms & colors made the team popular, all trends go away unless there's a story to keep carrying it. The first 4 years it was about the style. The next 4 years it was about the characters (Mugsey, Dell, LJ, Zo)

Here in Brazil, at least in my region, in early 90s nba jerseys were never found to be bought, as they were expensive and NBA was more of curiosity, But man, those Charlotte Hornets hats/caps were everywhere! We used to buy without even knowing what was that. It woud come down to ask someome if he knew any nba team. He would say: Just Chicago Bulls. But he would be wearing a Hornets Hat.

Haha! What a great story. Same as here in the UK. It seemed like the Bulls and Hornets invaded in the early 90s. Bulls because of Jordan, and Hornets for the colorway. Weirdly the Magic also featured heavily over here - probably because of families going on holiday to Disney and coming back with Magic gear.

Love the fact you keep taking me down memory lane. The Charlotte uni definitely provoked some different ideas in the 90s. The Suns had their iconic sunburst, the Sonics orange and green rebrand, and the one team you forgot was the Arizona Diamondbacks, who originally went purple and teal with their color scheme before they moved to “Sedona” red. I kinda wish Shaquille O’Neal hadn’t left Orlando and the Hornets hadn’t gotten beaten down with injuries. We were definitely looking at a major southern revolution in the east with the Heat, Magic and Hornets looking like long time contenders.

I lived near Charlotte for nearly 5yrs in the early to mid 90's. The Hornets were big. I've seen other kids at Junior High and High school wear their jersey. I also watched the Panthers stadium being built. The black panther statues in front of the stadium. Believe it or not. I was thinking to myself. Why are they building a stadium there? I later found out it was for the Panthers and you would think those statues in front of the stadium would've given it away. I was young and still getting acquainted with that area. An interesting time in my young life during those years. It's been nearly 30yrs since I lived there but I remember the Hornets being a loved team there as well as the Panthers.

I was born in Charlotte in '71, so I was in high school when the announcement was made that Charlotte got an NBA franchise. The uniforms were not only a huge influence on fashion, but there was an explosion of teal-colored cars driving around Charlotte as well as Honda offered their newest Civic in Teal; don't know if it was nation-wide or just specific to the area. When I left NC in '91 for Air Force basic training in Texas, I was wearing purple and white Hornets sweatpants and a teal Hornets t-shirt. At my first duty station, Grissom AFB, IN, I bought a Hornets jacket that had the faux leather sleeves at the mall in Kokomo for $175, which was not small change in 1992 and the most money I had ever spent on any clothing item. I love the fact that our little franchise had the best attendance numbers for so many years in a row despite not doing very well and being in one of the smallest 'big' city markets. I feel that strong bond was broken by that bastard Shinn when he sold the team and it moved to New Orleans.

The Hornets uniforms set the inner city on fire regarding urban fashion. To note even Michael Jordan adopted the Hornets colors on his Grape Jordan 5s which Will Smith wore on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Weird I know, but even weirder since I lived in Toronto. At the time, if it wasn't Bulls, Lakers, or Celtics merch, you couldn't buy it in Toronto, so needless to say it attracted a lot of attention. And the best part for an awkward teenage boy, it seemed like every girl I met wanted to try on the hat. The 90s "Teal Takeover" was huge - thought of a couple more immediately and decided to see how many I could find...
1994 - the NHL introduced teal (vs. purple, with black, white, and silver) jerseys for the All-Star Game and used them for 4 seasons.
1995 - the Quebec Nordiques unveiled a teal & purple rebrand in 1995 but moved to Colorado before it was ever worn, while the NY Islanders successfully but temporarily added teal with the infamous "Fish Sticks" rebrand that same summer.
1996 - The NBA used teal for the All Star Game (in San Antonio*) before the Pistons and Jazz both added teal with rebrands that summer.
1998 - Diamondbacks and Devil Rays debuted in 1998 with teal in their branding.
Outside the "Big 4," the Toronto Argonauts (CFL) rebrand in 1995, and the LA Galaxy (MLS) debuted 1996 are other notable examples.
*The most interesting case is probably the San Antonio Spurs, who played dabbled in both ends of the 90s Hornets-Raiders branding spectrum - introducing teal (and and orange and PINK!) to their logo and auxiliary branding in 1989, then continuing to wear black, white, and silver uniforms without a speck of colour throughout the entirety of the most colourful decade in sports history...

I had the later starter jacket the one with hugo on the front pullover pocket flap, I still have that jacket. During the 90's you could find me in my 9ers gear or the hornets pullover. I grew up as far away from NC as any one in the lower 48 as I was raised in washington.

The 90s Hornets, With Larry Johnson, Mugsy Bogus and Alonzo Mourning, the 90s Sonics with Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp, The 90s Mavericks with Jim Jackson, Jason kidd and Jamal Mashburn and the 90s Magic teams with Shaq, Penny, Nick Anderson Dennis Scott we're all very cool at one time or another. As a 12 year old in the mid 90s these we're the hip and cool teams that every basketball fan loved.

The teal trend also made it's way into Australian sports. When South Australian team Port Adelaide entered the AFL in 1997, their black & white uniform conflicted with an existing team, so teal became a part of their team brand. I knew teal was kind of a 90's thing, but I never connected the dots to Charlotte.

I don't think it can be overstated how widespread across the country these iconic looks were, especially if your hometown team wasn't great.
Growing up in the 90's near Dallas, when we played swimming pool basketball, we weren't Derek Harper and Terry Davis. We didn't know who the hell they were. We were Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippin, Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway.

So, Hornets since '94 largely due to the pinstripes and not wanting to be a glory fan of the Bulls, went to New Orleans on holiday in '99 and loved it, then wouldn't you know a few years later the Hornets get relocated to New Orleans, so it seemed like fate and I stuck with them in NOLA as the Hornets then Pelicans ever since....this will be my 31st year following the NBA!
