Patches kicks you in Elden Ring, too. There is a spot on Mt. Gelmir where, at a certain point in Patches' quest, you will find rainbow stones leading you to a ledge. When you look over the edge he kicks you down and tells you to stay away from Volcano Manor.
I find it funny that I found it by accident. I was like hey look glowing stones. I thought that there was an invader or something messing with me. Nope just patches.
Patches always seemed like your only real friend. It’s only through him that you get access to some of the best weapons and armor sets in the souls games. He’s just got a strange way of showing affection. He gives you access to unreachable areas and items that can get you through the rough spots.
haha not to mention in DS1 he's the only character with a good read on the others. He warns you about Lautrec, and correctly says the cleric guy is scum. (cleric then goes on to kill lady Rhea)
He's not "Patches" per se, but i think the first appearance of the trope might happen in Dragon Quest IV. There's a quest where the player character is competing with NPCs to recover an item, and at one point an NPC tells you to look at some treasure below the ledge you are on, and then he kicks you down. Blew my mind when it happened! I know Miyazaki is a Dragon Quest fan, so maybe that's why he has been so adament on keeping the trend alive, even if he didn't necessarily introduce it to the from repertoire

@@sirmrguitardude Abyss is very forgiving compared to the first Shadow Tower on ps1. The older game has an unavoidable ACID area that breaks all your equipment. It is cruel.
IronPinehead actually did a video on Shadow Tower Abyss and even dedicated a small segment to Patches. Though since he was talking how weird STA was, I think it was sadly gloss over.
I like to think of Patches from Shadow Tower Abyss as the original, if only because it gives me the excuse to mention ST Abyss. It's also nice to mention the Crestfallen Warrior from King's Field 4. The last two first person RPGs by FromSoft, both in the PS2 era. It's nice paralels, especially with the "die at first step" moments in both games. I can only hope that there will be a new game that is to King's Field/Shadow Tower what Deracine is to Echo Night, or Armored Core 6 is to Armored Core.
I think the fact he keeps popping up, going as far back as the OG ps1, says a lot about how much of an impact he made. He's akin to Gilgamesh in Final Fantasy, he has his OG appearance in FF5 and he clicks with not only the playerbase, but also the devs, so he keeps returning, to the chagrin of newcomers and the delight of old players. It's beautiful, really, I can't wait to get got by the weasel bastard in each new game.
Interesting, i wouldve expected that patches originated from the kings field series or maybe eternal ring but thats a game i havent heard about so far.
Funny thing, there's another Next Pilot in For Answer called Starka, who I swear is voiced by Patches' VA William Vanderpuye, but I can't find credits for the character.
The guy who Patch voiced is also the same guy who does Dogis voice in YS, pretty funny that I recently played YS 8 and hear him here as well. Looked up his voice work, he did tons and tons of memorable characters.
I would call the character in Shadow Tower Abyss not the first Patches, but a prototype of Patches. Similarly Biorr of Demon's Souls is not the first Onion Knight, but is certainly a prototype of the Onion Knight as he has similar behavior: A joyful mood, the tendency to throw himself into danger to help the player while in his body form, and going to sleep after each encounter.
Patches first appears by name in the Master Arena in Armored Core MOA (which you unlock by 100 percenting the game). He appears as Patch. He’s a middleweight, reverse joint AC with arm mounted machine guns, a rather powerful automatic slug gun, and a shoulder mounted chain gun.
super cool to see aspects of From Soft's quest system that they would go on to use in the souls games here in this game. Stuff like interacting with the guy at various points only for certain triggers to move him along. Very very cool, I would love to see From Soft revisit the first person dungeon crawler genre at some point, a new Shadow Tower game would be sick.
Another fromsoft staple i noticed besides major ones is people turning into monsters or usually dragon's eternal ring has this. but also technically started in king's field 1 (jp) cuz of the final boss.
There is indeed a place in Elden Ring where Patches kicks you down a perilous cliff by distracting you with shiny treasure. He appears in several different places and even has a boss fight where he begs to be spared at the end, after which he becomes a merchant (but can still fool you with a trap chest)
Amazing. Didn't know about the origin even though I had a vague memory of playing through Shadow Tower. That said, Patches' appearance in Elden Ring has to be my favorite. It's quite ... unique.
I think the best way to look at it is they combine both characters, the trickery of the human from shadow tower and the cowardice from Patch the mech pilot
Patches is my favorite character. He has somehow found a way to move between worlds. Whether he keeps his memory, only he knows, but he is undoubtedly untethered. Who else has been so resourceful?
Funny thing is. Patches has the right idea of how to beat the Elden Ring DLC. That sort of build is apparently REALLY good against the final boss. A big ass shield and a poking stick.
I know in one of the AC games he runs and you have to chase him down as well. I’m pretty sure it’s in For Answer if you choose to go for him first. He runs if you come near him and snipes you while you fight the other guy if you choose to ignore him
I love how Patches at this point has passed novelty to be almost a sisyphean effort... yet it shows a kind of joy in fate. Doing something you know will be bad simply because it means interacting with someone else in these bleak empty worlds. Of course being the "protagonist" of these games is a shield a bit, must be much more frightening for someone who is not functionally immortal like the player is in these games but still. It's fascinating gaming design, very archetypical.
Patches keeping those same old tricks in any form or era. And yeah the one in Master of Arena is a bit strenuous since its just an arena fight, the only thing you can link to future iterations is that his Emblem is a shield with an Eagle Crest which was Patches' shield in the Souls titles.
I played Echo Night, Kuan, Bloodborne and Dark Souls. but the From game that broke me, made me quit in a fury of (permanent) rage was Cookies and Cream. I can still hear the title music.
Patches as you guys know him. He has been around since Armored Core Masters of the Arena in 1999, also using a backwards leg parts and shifty tactics, same configuration as in 4 Answer.

Uoh, that's an interesting currency name .
The Shadow Tower Abyss version is certainly the most punishing one, but then again that's the most punishing From game I've played.
I made it to the poison gas level and just quit. I didn't need another FromSoft poison swamp in my life. But now I want to try again.
@@sirmrguitardude the stores usually sell equipment with anti poison, there's an answer to every bullshit in this game.
@@sirmrguitardude Abyss is very forgiving compared to the first Shadow Tower on ps1.
The older game has an unavoidable ACID area that breaks all your equipment. It is cruel.
@@BlinJe Always take off your boots before walking through acid. That's video game wisdom right there.
@@321cheeseman bro you gotta swim through lakes of it
God this Armored Core stuff looks so freakin cool! No clue what it was but looks like a new one is coming out soon! Excited to see
IronPinehead actually did a video on Shadow Tower Abyss and even dedicated a small segment to Patches.
I can only hope that there will be a new game that is to King's Field/Shadow Tower what Deracine is to Echo Night, or Armored Core 6 is to Armored Core.
ahh yeah i'm gonna cover the crestfallen in a video soon but not sure it'll be as interesting as old patchey boy
THANK YOU. Digging into older from games made me see this.
Interesting, i wouldve expected that patches originated from the kings field series or maybe eternal ring but thats a game i havent heard about so far.
Please do more videos like this one. Your voice is perfect for that
Remembers me when Iron Pineapple looked at the game and noticed that character.
oh damn! so he did.
I believe iron pineapple mentions it briefly in his review of it, we love to see some patches love
loved the jokes on this one, also cool to know the "it didn't count" origins of Patches
The hesitation to say cune had me laughing hard asf
patches is the literal god of deception in the souls universe
He's just God in general
Took me a minute to understand this wasn’t a video about the first patch ever added to a videogame
Funny thing, there's another Next Pilot in For Answer called Starka, who I swear is voiced by Patches' VA William Vanderpuye, but I can't find credits for the character.
This is such a fresh look at old material. OP I hope you continue to make interesting vids like this. Liking and subscribing and wishing you the best!
The guy who Patch voiced is also the same guy who does Dogis voice in YS, pretty funny that I recently played YS 8 and hear him here as well. Looked up his voice work, he did tons and tons of memorable characters.
REALLY? oh man i love Ys.. I'll get to 8 eventually 😭
@@BlinJe 8's so good man! Enjoy it when you get the chance.
You got a new subscriber!
Keep up the good work! i love it !
Not only is the video informative, but your voice is calm and soothing, yet hilarious when you want to be. Amazing work 👍
Patches first appears by name in the Master Arena in Armored Core MOA (which you unlock by 100 percenting the game).

One thing I think you overlooked. Hes looking for "the spear", and what does Patches wield in Souls games and Elden Ring?
Ahh the spear! Maybe. I overlooked it because it’s the central macguffin in both ST games
Another fromsoft staple i noticed besides major ones is people turning into monsters or usually dragon's eternal ring has this.
but also technically started in king's field 1 (jp) cuz of the final boss.

CUNNY
MUNNY
😭
I didnt wanna say cunny either 💀
Would be hype as hell if Patches become an actual boss in a future FromSoft game that has memories of every game that he was in.
Yeah and his command grab is he kicks you down several ledges, and you can’t stop him
Just hope he isn't wearing his lapp armor
'Iron Pineapple' mentions patches in his video on Shadow Tower, but ya it's just a small tidbit and doesn't go into it much
There is indeed a place in Elden Ring where Patches kicks you down a perilous cliff by distracting you with shiny treasure. He appears in several different places and even has a boss fight where he begs to be spared at the end, after which he becomes a merchant (but can still fool you with a trap chest)
Fear the haired Patches
I feel.. something unnatural has occured
Patches' entire existence brings pain, misery, and curiosity. I love patches
Patches is in a cave at pretty much the start of Elden Ring. You can get Margits shackle from him.
I like how in AC you can damage him and he'll surrender and he does the same thing in Elden Ring when you find him in the cave
Amazing. Didn't know about the origin even though I had a vague memory of playing through Shadow Tower.
That said, Patches' appearance in Elden Ring has to be my favorite. It's quite ... unique.
His involvement in the radahn fight is absolutely amazing. Even if its easy to miss.
there are 2 shadow tower games.
Abyss and normal shadow tower
I think the best way to look at it is they combine both characters, the trickery of the human from shadow tower and the cowardice from Patch the mech pilot
i hope that Shadow of Erdtree finishes up Patches' questline. it just kinda, ends.
Patches is my favorite character. He has somehow found a way to move between worlds. Whether he keeps his memory, only he knows, but he is undoubtedly untethered. Who else has been so resourceful?
Certified Patches Classic
Funny thing is. Patches has the right idea of how to beat the Elden Ring DLC. That sort of build is apparently REALLY good against the final boss.
A big ass shield and a poking stick.
@@DataDrain02 ahaha. Good to know.
I’ve got a video of playing DS1 like that, i want to complete all the others (no roll allowed)
man cant wait to meet him again in AC6 i bet he still running the reverse joint setup
I hope they develop him more 🙏
I know in one of the AC games he runs and you have to chase him down as well.
In Dark Souls 3, his kick actually allows you to find the way to the end. He ends up helping you.
When you're free of all worldly wants, you can do that!
I'm just convinced there is a huge lab of patches clones in the fromsoft basement that's been running since the 2000s ready to make another cameo
Top shelf vid. The camera work at 7:30 is great 👌
the tower may have stolen his hair, but his greatest heist was stealing out hearts 💀
Absolute top boy
Patches keeping those same old tricks in any form or era. And yeah the one in Master of Arena is a bit strenuous since its just an arena fight, the only thing you can link to future iterations is that his Emblem is a shield with an Eagle Crest which was Patches' shield in the Souls titles.
I think they all count and I’m always happy to see more instances of our favorite troublesome traitor
This video assploded. Good work, man.
Yes i say in the video
I havent gotten around to playing shadow tower yet so when he pulled out a gun and shot the proto patches i laughed out loud
Did I click on this video thinking it was the history of patches for video games: yes. Am I glad it ended up being obscure from software lore: also yes
That was an amazing video! I wish FROM would make a STA remake or sequel
its amazing how still we find new things
He like the moonlight greatsword. Transcends game series.
The Unnamed
The Good Luck
The Hynea
Good o'l Trusty Patches
The Spider
Unbreakable/Lapp
which patches is that?
-yes
In the ringed city he only ever helps you, even when he kicks you down it's actually knocking you onto the right path to progress forward.
A Shadow Tower video in 2023? What a great moment...
I remember playing it myself, kinda the easiest FROM game and dense atmosphere did splendid work.
tried playing it and died 3 times to that bullshit falling rock in the beginning, classic fromsoft
Him using a spear throughout the series because that is what he desired as unnamed patches is such a cool callback I didn’t know existed thank you for this cool video!
de nada bro
Of note: In AC:MOA Patch's AC symbol is a shield with a bird on it-in both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, Patches uses a shield with a bird on it.
Well spotted, sir 🕵️♂️
They did the exploding chest in Dark Souls 2. But Patches was split into two characters there, Creighton and Pete.
Creighton did nothing wrong
@@BlinJe Amen to that
Thought this was gonna be about video game patches like updates
Same here lol
I originally read the title as if you meant video game patches XD
gg good video
Dis one doing numbers bro. Good work. Subbed.
Damn, after watching Grayfruit play the King's Field games, I wish he played Shadow Tower Abyss too because he made so many jokes about the swing animation, and if he saw this guy he would have freaked out at Patches tricking him again
Iron Pineapple has a video where he plays Shadow Tower Abyss and even mentions this early Patches. And that video has like 2 Million views, so i would guess a decent chunk of the community knows about his appearance there.
1.5 years later you're about the 50th comment to tell me thanks.
That bomb stunt is later perfectly recreated in Dark Souls 2 at the end of Pate and Creighton’s quest
that is the og patches no doubt. He tricks you into opening a chest that is a trap. Classic patches.
