FLT is always hating on ecodiesel. I have a 3 gen 2022 and really love this truck! FLT needs to read the forums about the chev diesel is not all roses, I see many people have issues with that engine.
Nothing is harder than trying to make somebody pay for something you have given them for free. Subscription services on cars a bad idea. It is the type of idea that looks good to share holders and executives but you will almost never be able to spin into a posotieve customer experience.
In my experience all of the "little vans" had the same issue; it didn't matter what manufacturer it was, the reliability was horrible. Our company went from Ford to Mercedes and now to Ram because both the Ford and Mercedes kept having issues with the engine or transmission. Hopefully we have better luck with the Rams.
I just don't like how vehicles have cylinder deactivation and auto start stop. Also, I like Naturally Aspirated V6 engines in midsized trucks, Naturally Aspirated V8 engines in 1/2 ton trucks, and turbo diesels in 3/4 and 1 ton HD trucks. In cars, like my 2015 Camry, I prefer it's naturally aspirated 2.5 4 cylinder, and the optional 3.5 V6 that was offered.
Me toooo na only and I agree on the Camry thing same as a accord I prefer v6 over the 2.0t as top engine . That why I got a es330 Lexus and. 14 is350 na engines reliable as ever
A friend has a 2018 RAM Limited with the 3.0L Turbo Diesel with 220,000 trouble-free miles. There have been a couple of recalls, but nothing he complained about. He plans on keeping this truck as long as possible.
I own a 2020 Ford F-150 King Ranch with the 3.0L Power Stroke Diesel. I live in the Vancouver area. Leaving Calgary AB and the cruise set to 100km (62 mph) I got up 29 mpg through the mountains. Getting home my overall average was 25.6 mpg. Also... pulling a 29 foot RV through the mountains, I averaged 12 mpg. I'm really happy with the Ford 3.0L diesel. I personally think it's too bad Ford stopped making them.
Ford's stated rational for killing the Powerstroke was the supposed superiority of the Hybrid. How's that working out for you, Ford? The Hybrids are collecting dust on dealers' lots. They're fine for around town but owners who want a long-legged, efficient half-ton Ford truck are left hanging.
I own a 2015 Ecodiesel and after buying a GDE tune for it. I LOVE my truck ! 28 to 32 mpg on highway aand 20 to 24 in city plus with turbo brake its great !
It's common to lose payload with a diesel in most trucks, not just the Gladiator. The GVWR is a set value for the entire vehicle and the diesel eats into that rating. The same way that 2 wheel drive power trains have a higher payload than 4 wheel drive. One of the main benefits to a diesel in any Jeep is increased range and low end torque when off-road. If you need serious towing capacity, you're not looking at a Jeep anyway.
Eco diesel flopped because of the v6. The 6 cylinder diesel was already perfected by Cummins. Why would they use a blank canvas when they had the product 20 yrs before to revisit in a smaller form factor. The gladiator could’ve done great with a small payload if it was an inline diesel focused on overland and fuel economy. The simplicity of the engine design says a lot for reliability and still could get 350 to 450 lbft of torque. Inline 6 turbo motors have been notorious for boosting crazy power in the aftermarket with little modification. The resurgence of the inline 6 is on the rise. I hope to see the return for jeep/dodge.
Most importantly congrats to you both on your negative tests. Especially you Nathan. Trying to get the baby weight off at your age would be a battle buddy. If Ram had used the an updated version of the Cummins 4BT I think to stay in line with the Cummins in their 2500's I think it might have done really well. Sadly those that purchased the 3.0 might have issues with parts down the road now that it is being discontinued.
I have a 2013 Ram 2500 with the 5.7L Hemi and I get 2-4 mpg higher fuel mileage with 91 octane gas than with 87 octane gas no matter what time of year here in ND. So, at least in my experience, the hemi absolutely does notice a difference between the two octane fuels.
Also, the difference isn’t the ethanol content either. I’ve used both 10% ethanol 87 & 91 octane, and non ethanol 87 & 91 octane fuels, the same thing, occurs. The 10% ethanol does give me 3-5 mpg worse economy across the board though.
I fill up premium around 4 times a month reason why I get better mileage I think it's due to carbon build up with the hemis I don't think you need it often but its good to put premium once in a while
Great video and info. I have had 7 new ram 1500’s and my current one has e torque……I swear it does nothing…..except it green lights me to park in electric /hybrid parking spots in Boston. 😂
I’m also talking about putting an inline 4 diesel in wranglers. Fueling up and driving your rig to Moab enjoying the trails and getting great mpg on the highway home would be a huge consideration for new comers who can’t afford multiple vehicles in these days markets.
The Gladiator is awesome, but Jeep’s current pricing is ridiculous. They could cut their prices by 20% and I still wouldn’t considered them a good deal. I went with a 4Runner for this reason late 2020 because the TRD Offroad Premium X series was $10-15k less than a Rubicon Wrangler or Gladiator then, and the price difference has only gotten more in the years since.
Same with their SUVs. I wouldn't buy a GC Summit for the MSRP (74-82), but I'm seeing ads for low 60s now toward the end of the year. That starts to look attractive.
Everyone demands a half ton diesel yet they rarely survive... Emissions restricts all diesel engines, I buy gas for that reason. Simplicity, cost and efficiency.
I had a ‘85 Chrysler LeBaron GTS 2.2 turbo. A fun light weight little scooter of a car. I used it to commute back and forth to work. Depending on the grade of gas, over the same route, gas mileage could very by as much as 6.2 mpg! The 6.2 mpg loss was using the mandated gasohol for two winters back in the early 90’s.
My 2020 warlock 5.7 gets 20.1 over all mpg Greenville to Nashville on 93, 19.7 on 89 and 18.9 on 87. We make that trip 6 times a year. It’s up and down mountains and flat lands. That’s leaving at 4am with very little traffic either the cruise on 75.
I have a 2022 ram rebel ecodiesel and I love it and I average 22mpgs combined this was an upgrade from a 2017 ram slt with the hemi getting 17 mpgs combined in a 2x4
Subscription services are fine for anything that needs updating, like SuperCruise or GPS, or anything that could be described as a service like Sirius XM. Things that exist as part of the manufacture of the car, like heated seats or remote start, need to be what they always been, a one-time purchase.
I at first thought the remote start for Toyota by subscription was a bad idea I now have second thoughts. When I bought my 2023 Rav4 I inquired about getting the remote start installed in Canada. The price varied but was 500-1000 depending on style and dealer. I got 3 years of free remote access and after that it is 10 per month. Well it would take at least a minimum of 7-9 years to pay for the install and parts. You also do not have a very long warranty on the product either. After that amount of time I will be trading and could care less. So it is not a great deal but it is about break even in my mind.
Toyotas are great vehicles, but unless the dealership installs the remote start when you agree to the subscription service, the cost of the parts are aleady baked into the vehicle's price and Toyota gets a few dollars more from you each month so you can use something you've already purchased.
I been temped to purchase a passenger Ford Transit Connect for utility and maybe for the perceived efficiency But the price was too high compared to a far better equipped Mini van. Especially when the Grand Caravan was around.
I bought a 2023 Bronco and that’s the last new car I’ll ever buy if manufacturers shoehorn subscriptions into every. I paid sticker for that Bronco and it was still 48k for a two door. That’s more than enough of my money.
Man, the Nissan Titan is the among the BEST fullsize trucks! I wish more people would look and see the value of the Titan instead of going to manufacturers like Toyota and buying just because of the name. 53:19
I am in Costa Rica right now. There are midsize trucks from Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Isuzus everywhere. They all have little diesels. Wish we could get those trucks in the states.
Crazy to watch these manufacturers/epa ruin modern cars. Diesels are forever ruined small or large ones. Now they keep going with smaller gas engines that are turbocharged. I will not be buying a newer car with the crazy prices and reliability issues.
Toyota please put the 4 liter 6 back in the Taco- Ranger and Colorado and Canyon should Either Make their own or use Toyotas Six in their own midsize trucks - save the 4 twin Turbos for cars- maybe a 4 cyl twin turbo - Gas - Electric Hybrid
The consumer still absorbs the costs with subscriptions like you suggested. You still pay for the vehicle to be equip with the tech you never use. WT or XL trims for me. Drives me nuts nearly every truck I see over those trims have some sort of trailer back up knob... why do you need a little knob when there is a big steering wheel.
7.3 ford manual says regular fuel is fine but premium preferred when towing especially in the summer. My wife’s 3.5 high output expedition says the same thing
Remember when Chrysler used to make the Dodge Grand Caravan CV? I assume the CV stood for Commercial Van. Stripped interior and no side windows past the driver's door.
What do you think of the 2010 Cadillac Escalade EXT Premium *AS LOW AS $500 DOWN! - $23,995. I am looking for my next 1/2 ton. I currently have a "12 F-150 FX2 3.5 Eco. I had to replace the turbos at 150,000. It has 222,0220. I am also torn between my first GMC Sierra 1500 or another V8 F-150.
On the part of octane and efficiency the Ram 5.7 definitely would benefit from it, my personal Ram has bad valve knock at wide open throttle on 87 octane and runs a slightly better 0-60 after 2 full tanks of 93. In all reality any NA engine with over a 10 to 1 compression will benefit from a better octane as well as all forced induction engines. You can take the compression out with timing but it's basically a waist.
Anyone who's read Car and Driver's 40,000 mile long term test of the Titan XD diesel would certainly shy away from that truck. They had many problems with it.
I have a different take on the Titan. It needed something to differentiate itself from the rest of the segment. When the XD came out, it should have just become the new Titan and marketed as a more capabable half ton. Nissan should have concentrated its efforts on a single platform and made something a little special. Another fail/flop you've mentioned in the past, and I'm surprised didn't make this list, is the Hummer EV.
If someone would just make a modern version of the suzuki samurai, it would be cheap and easy to build and they would sell millions of them. Good on gas, easy to park, off road adventure capable, easy to tow behind an RV as a city vehicle...it would be a home run.
The GM light diesel is every bit as much a pile. We’ve had several come through our used dept. complete garbage. The bogus EPA debacle killed the Ram 3.0. The loss of fuel mileage completely wiped out the “clean” tune supposed advantage. Bigger foot print and destroyed the capability of the engine. The Ford engine was just garbage.
Same thing my 2014 Ram 1500 EcoJunk motor experienced when DPF clogged. Ran like crap. THEN Ram recalled them to reprogram the PCM or ECM - THAT basically ruined the truck. Floor throttle from a stop sign, wait 2-3 seconds, then start moving. I ditched the damn thing (really) shortly after their "fix". That first gen 3.0 litre EcoBoost really p!$$ed me off Reply
I wish instead of subscriptions, auto makers would make it easier to upgrade the options that you want on used cars like passive door handles or led lights at a decent price and easy to install packages from the dealer I know there are a few things I would pay to add to my truck and I’m currently looking to see what I can through the aftermarket I think it’s a market the manufacturer are over looking if they really want more of are money
Inelastic price assumptions by truck makers have been an abject failure. The people who work in this world can't afford any of their new trucks. EV trucks can't haul anything and when they do, their 80-20 range is awful. No manufacturer states the true range of an EV which is 80-20% not 100-0%.
All the small diesel engines had and or have issues. The new GM engine has a major oil burning problem. It is so bad the ship from the factory with an extra quart of oil in the crankcase.
No it doesn’t. The LM2 had a small percentage that did, but the LZ0 has almost 0 reported issues. Every video on youtube, the truck has like 400 miles on it.
6:19 i think that's what really did it. I don't know who set that price point, but I'm pretty sure they missed the mark. It was set at least $2000 too high.
15:10 there might actually be a much simpler way to do this. Run the 87 octane test, then put in some race fuel to raise the octane level to 93. Because race fuel is like 120 octane it shouldn't take that much to raise the fuel level in the tank to that level. I believe the measurement can be volume based, so if you have approximately 9 gallons in a take you shouldn't need more than a gallon to raise the octane level to 93. After you add the race fuel just run the test as normal, filling up at the pump as you normally would. Please check with Shell or ExxonMobil to make sure this is how it would work. I know a little about octane and fuel, but it's not my wheelhouse for sure.
I still don’t get why @Ford used a Land Rover derived diesel engine. I feel like if not building the engine themselves they should have done a modern baby power stroke with International
I don't know why they would call a Hyundai Santa Cruz a p/u truck. To me a pick up truck , whether full size or mid or compact has one or two doors and a full bed depending on size of truck. The Santa Fe is nothing like that. It is weird and doubt if it can carry much of anything. I consider the Honda Ridgeline the same thing but that does have a quasi bed. These companies make these weird vehicles and call them something they are not.
The TitanXD is basically what the original Titan should have been the whole time. Nissan should have just dropped the XD part of the name, killed the weaker Titan and made the old XD the Titan.
Too bad those small diesel engines were failures. If done correctly, they could have been the “trains” of the auto world. Small diesel engines powering the electric motors that run the truck! Why haven’t they gone that way???
I can't even guess why Ford chose to drop the small diesel engine, but Stellantis did it because they don't want to invest too much money in non-electric solutions. Personally, I think that they're making a huge mistake, which they're going to regret someday. The question about varying fuel efficiency with different fuel octane levels is interesting. With my '06 300C with the 5.7L HEMI, I was able to average 31 MPG on the highways with 93-94 octane gas; and that was travelling at the speed of traffic flow (which was almost always well above the posted speed limits). The caveat being that I only managed that much AFTER I had switched completely over to a much better rated oil. Specifically, Royal Purple. I with with that brand in the engine, transmission and rear differential; and I also used their oil filter, which I found to be better than K&N. The only other thing that I did to that car was also use a K&N engine air filter. (Not the cold air induction filter. Just a straight replacement for the OEM engine air filter) In city driving the improvement in fuel efficiency was marginally better, but nothing worth rooting my horn about. Since then, I always use premium lubricants and filters on my vehicles; and as long as I'm not trying to accelerate like it's the start of an F1 race at each intersection, or try to pass every vehicle I see on the highways, I notice improved fuel efficiency on highways. For city driving, I say stick with the fuel recommended by the manufacturer. To the question of manufactures charging subscription fees for features, I say they can stick that idea up their collective asses! The prices of vehicles are already too high. They're making plenty of money already. If they want to offer aftermarket features and products separately, without taking away from the features that we already pay a premium for, then that's fine. I'm ok with that, but I'd rather drive a much older model car that already has all the features, than be treated like a chump and forced to shell out more of my hard earned money for them. This is why the Dodge EV _"muscle"_ car will be a flip. They want to have people pay extra to unlock features that already come with the car! Regarding the Nissan Titan... I never quite liked the look of the truck. I wonder how many people felt the same way; and whether that impacted sales
Jeez it blows my mind talking trucks & mpg. You want mpg put on your panties & buy a prius. Now as to payload gas will beat it simply due to engine weight. However if you do any towing that's the diff. Further gas engines & Trans will not stand up to load & time. I got the 2500/Cummins for that reason. If I wanted just a grocery getters it would been gas. If mpg and a play truck the Ridgeline.
Did you guys even listen to yourselves while you gave examples of why the XD was a bad truck? We own and race two of them. gas and Diesel. You are way off the mark here. Horror stories? Have you seen every single diesel forum on pumps blowing Ford, Chevy, Dodge engines? Your gripe was that they just didn't sell? Thats on Nissan; Not the truck itself. So, to list the Titan XD as a failure? that is only due to Nissan Japan(not Nissan USA). Flop? not at all. We have proved this.
Thank you, Nathan, the subscriptions for features we’ve had in the past is ridiculous!
If that's the way companies are going, I'll just keep buying old. F that.

No issues with my eTorque so far.
Anyone who's read Car and Driver's 40,000 mile long term test of the Titan XD diesel would certainly shy away from that truck. They had many problems with it.
That article may have single-handedly killed the diesel Titan. It sounded like they got a lemon or at least a truck with abnormal problems.
I have a different take on the Titan. It needed something to differentiate itself from the rest of the segment. When the XD came out, it should have just become the new Titan and marketed as a more capabable half ton. Nissan should have concentrated its efforts on a single platform and made something a little special. Another fail/flop you've mentioned in the past, and I'm surprised didn't make this list, is the Hummer EV.
never seen a titan XD , Hummer EV every one who wanted one has one, haven't seen one on the road in 6 mos more F150 lightings and riven rt1
They did market is as as more capable half ton.
If someone would just make a modern version of the suzuki samurai, it would be cheap and easy to build and they would sell millions of them. Good on gas, easy to park, off road adventure capable, easy to tow behind an RV as a city vehicle...it would be a home run.
Ram should have made an inline 6 ecodiesel but i do know ppl who've had no issues with +300,000 km hit or miss with that engine
I miss the Lexus GS
The GM light diesel is every bit as much a pile. We’ve had several come through our used dept. complete garbage.
The bogus EPA debacle killed the Ram 3.0. The loss of fuel mileage completely wiped out the “clean” tune supposed advantage. Bigger foot print and destroyed the capability of the engine.
The Ford engine was just garbage.
It's the new Malaise era....
That first gen 3.0 litre EcoBoost really p!$$ed me off

Like Dodge not offering the Hurricane I-6 turbo in their 2024 Rams? The engine is now 2 sales years old and still not offered in any RAM truck.
Subscriptions have to go!!
I bet people with horse trailers would be experts on which truck is the best over the life of a vehicle.
50:11 no truck flop video is complete without the Titan making an appearance.
Inelastic price assumptions by truck makers have been an abject failure. The people who work in this world can't afford any of their new trucks. EV trucks can't haul anything and when they do, their 80-20 range is awful. No manufacturer states the true range of an EV which is 80-20% not 100-0%.
Just because something is discontinued a motor does not mean it is a failure.
Gotta love those mexico made Chevy rear ends and transmissions.
I thought dude was smart until he said he took a covid test and it was negative..😂..keep watching the news guy
Tesla semi was tow because of defects in the brake from I think Bosch and all new diesel semi
Why would anyone want a diesel ? Cost of it is way higher the gas ? Mpg may be better but considering the extra cost at purchase too ?
The reliability of the small vans is horrendous. Two transit connects at my job are garbage now with less than 60,000 miles.
The connect seemed to fall apart according to everyone i spoke to in company’s
24:40 we're a lot closer than you think.
I would argue Tesla's "rollercoaster" pricing has not worked out well for them.
Based on the into no offense Andre but I prefer to listen to Nathan... glad you're both negative on test results
Ford is still using the 3.0L Powerstroke diesel ⛽ in the Ranger....
Subscriptions?! No thank You.
I still don’t get why @Ford used a Land Rover derived diesel engine. I feel like if not building the engine themselves they should have done a modern baby power stroke with International
Will not pay any subscriptions, don't want your satellite radio.
Maybe... MAYBE.... $2 for live traffic to gps... $10 for 5g hotspot...
Great I was a gamer and stopped cause of micro trans now I love cars and it followed me lol
I heard trx is done at the end of 24
The dual clutch transmission in my 2022 KIA SOUL GT is a disaster to live with in day to day driving. 😐
in europa the diesel engines from ford suck they do not last.
I think Nathan should retest, I have a feeling he bought a cheap brand of test.
The EPA should be abolished, and the people behind it charged with corruption.
No
Lol. Yes. Because we can trust companies like vw and ram to do the right thing. Too funny. DEFUND THE EPA HAHAHAHAHA
When you’re drinking Quaker State in your water. You would think differently.
I’m curious what you propose for FCA’s price gouging?
@anotheruser5654 which chemicals? Which river? Was it the Army Corp of Engineers?
That’s not GM diesel came out of cab over trucks from overseas .
It would solve a "crisis" that you need to experience.
I'd NEVER PAY FOR ANY SUBSCRIPTION EVER, and prices for anything new are OUTRAGEOUS.
Just a straight replacement for the OEM engine air filter)
In city driving the improvement in fuel efficiency was marginally better, but nothing worth rooting my horn about.
What happened to tommy
Did you guys even listen to yourselves while you gave examples of why the XD was a bad truck? We own and race two of them. gas and Diesel. You are way off the mark here. Horror stories? Have you seen every single diesel forum on pumps blowing Ford, Chevy, Dodge engines? Your gripe was that they just didn't sell? Thats on Nissan; Not the truck itself. So, to list the Titan XD as a failure? that is only due to Nissan Japan(not Nissan USA). Flop? not at all. We have proved this.
For service work a man needs a mans van with room to place thins safely
The Duramax won...by copying Cummins...how about that 😂😂
