"I treat the vocalist as an instrument, no disrespect to the artist." Maynard has said on multiple occasions that he considers himself just another instrument in the band, not the front man. So I think you're A-OK making that statement. ;)
Right, as long as they rewind at least 10 seconds when they resume. Some of the natural stopping points in Tool songs often are where something awesome is about to hit or switch. It kills me when they rob themselves of that just because they felt the need to stop and not rewind.
@@jek4837 yeah but I think something people need to remember/be mindful of is that music hits everyone differently. So what is a pivotal moment in the song may not hold the same resonance when others hear it. For example I learned how to rap along to walking by ocean wisdom back when it was cool to do that stuff - I did it to this girl hoping to impress her with all the cool flows and funky bars, but the only bit that really seemed to make her smile was this one throwaway line where he makes a family guy reference and says "sucking a titty like giggity giggity" and she really enjoyed that. Forget... you know... the other 1300 words, the switch ups or the insane wordplay. Nope - just giggity. So you can never really say for sure that someone else is robbing themselves of experiencing the same feeling a part gave you, cause in all likelihood it won't give them that feeling, anyway. Besides, he CAN listen to the song again in his own time, if he likes. 😉 I do see why people get upset. I understand it because I feel the same way in certain spots, its like "you fool! You're missing the best bit!" but I generally just push it aside. The other thing I'm here for is a different take than the one I myself had, not just someone to say what I think they should say, and thats something you can only get if you let people have the room to express those thoughts
@@Loctorak Yes, music hits everyone differently. I definitely agree with that, but there are some moments that hit nearly everyone. When you see different people have nearly the same reaction at the same moment in different reaction videos, then those are the moments you wish they shared. That's a fun place to be as a listener. Learning all this stuff does take that perspective away from you to some degree. You might not know what "7/8" or "phrygian mode" means, but people who know can no longer hear the guitar as just a "waawoowaa" like you can. And I know, personally, I miss that perspective a lot.

Quote from my buddy after hearing tool for the first time. "The worst part about hearing this for the first time is I will never get to listen to this for the first time again"
His facial expressions as he's listening to the many nuances and shifts...EXACTLY what you're supposed to look like when listening to any Tool song; especially for the first time.
Aenima was fucking life changing. My best friend Toby and I saw them 3times back then, and Aenima was ALWAYS playing in the car while we'd be out driving around or on road trips, while going to sleep, having sex, literally almost played nonstop it was just SO GOOD. to this day it's untouchable
For the love of all that is holy: When you decide to "decompose" Wings For Marie & 10,000 Days, you MUST listen to them together. These are about the death of Maynard's mother- absolutely incredible songs. Keep up the good work man, I'm enjoying your Tool & Polyphia uploads 👍 Oh, and Merry Christmas 🎄
I've seen TOOL in concert twice, and all I can honestly say is that it isn't a concert, it's an experience for all of the senses. I literally can melt into the ether when listening to their albums.
I'm a stage hand. I have worked four Tool concerts now. And this last one was also my last show before my state shut down because of a certain disease ravaging the country. And when I say "the last show," the governor announced the restriction of any event with more than 100 people DURING INTERMISSION. The show was finished because there weren't enough cops in the entire state to deal with 20,000 Tool fans. 46 and 2 was the last song they played. What a way to go out.
@@ellencameron3775 It's hard for me to express how their music makes me feel. It's literally like a drug. They are the only band I have ever listened to where I essentially lose myself in the music. Cheers to you and the experience you've lived. Stay safe.
Your pauses are great. Nicely timed and informative. You always have a nice take on things and your breaks are far more entertaining than most reactors going "ok um wow...like....wow..ok back to the song." @@8Scientist It rather says something when I dislike one of their songs because of how it makes me feel. It's not a bad thing. To the contrary, it's so good at doing what it was intended to do that _I don't want to listen to it._
As a musician, I really appreciate the way you break this down. A lot people either don't know, or don't have the capacity to realize that not only is tool one of the most competent and forward stretching group of artists, but consistently, one of the best mixed artists out there.
Merry Christmas. There was a group of kids (young teens?) from the O'Keefe Music Foundation who covered this song, 46 & 2, about seven years ago. The video is on TH-cam. Even if you decide not to react to it, I thought you might be interested in watching it and seeing how a group of young talented musicians performed this song.
His soft spoken parts hypnotize and lure and before you know it the track breaks off into 30 different directions and you’re caught in the spiral. Almost like coaxing a moth into a flame. It’s like he sweet talks me into hell itself. I love it.
Dude, this is cool. I’ve been listening to this song for almost 25 years and you’ve somehow added more layers to already established masterpiece. Keep it up!!
Hard to believe it’s been that long!! I remember the first time I heard Stinkfist.. I remember almost becoming overwhelmed with emotion to the point of crying because I said that is everything I have ever wanted to hear in a song.. I was blown away and thought that God had finally created my perfect band.. Damn I was right
Tool, as big as they are, is still one of the most underrated bands. When you break down what they do and how genius they really are it can show a person just how underrated they have been.
Imagine calling Tool underrated. Literally no one underrates Tool. They’re universally praised for exactly what you said they aren’t. This whole take is idiotic.
They've always had huge critical praise and respect among music heads, but if y'all think they hit the ceiling of how popular and well-known something can be, just like, no lol It's like comparing Yes to Floyd or Zep - I like Yes better, they (used to be) critical darlings, and they're very very well-known, but they're not in near the same league of notoriety. In that way, you could definitely say they're underrated.
Your pauses are by far the best out of any of the reactors.. few between, and when they come, they come with some real substance and thought. Keep doing what you're doing!
@@MattKayser my personal favorite is the patient, tbh. Cos it really helped me get through a rough stage in life, like a prayer or mantra to keep the faith and keep on trudging. I lived those lyrics for a good 5-6 months of my life man.
One of the best Live Performances for me was a concert way back when in Mesa, AZ. A dude threw a bottle at Maynard so he walked off mid song. The band kept playing and then continued the set for another couple songs all instrumental before Maynard came back out. The instrumental songs made that one of the best Tool concerts I've been to.
I love just hearing him explaining and translating the sound he hears to feelings.......I’m just a dumb southern boy with no vocabulary and as he’s explaining I’m saying “Yes, that’s exactly how I feel but don’t know how to vocalize it or explain it!!!”
I LOVE this as well and find it comforting to know that others feel this as well. I too find it difficult to articulate this experience when listening to music, especially music that truely resonates with me. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Chris! You are not a dumb southern boy. You aren't a dumb anything my man. If you can think and feel, you are smart. If you are sensitive to the sounds of Tool, you are profound. Whether you can put any of that into words doesn't matter bro. 💯 You are awesome!
I'm only 6 minutes in but a couple observations: I love when musicians listen to TOOL because you can see them mouthing numbers trying to figure out these damn time signatures 😂 Also, "and then Danny starts to do what he's doing" or "Danny doing what he does" pretty well sums up how wild TOOL's music. Also², I think Maynard would agree that the vocals should be treated as one of the instruments, not as something above or more important than the non-voice instruments.
You’re point about Maynard rings so very true. I saw a live set once and he set himself upstage backlit as a silhouette with spotlights on Danny and Justin. It was the first band I ever saw who had a drummer as a front man (not including Spiderbait as their songs tended to be simple rock).
@@willliam1343 It's hard to get to that point, but it does make it easier to just get sucked in and be tossed around by the beautiful maelstrom of sound.
There’s always a part of Tool’s music where I can’t catch my breath. I feel like my heart beats with the song and I can’t breathe unless it lets me. Glad you liked that feeling too.
The first time i heard the beginning of "Lateralus" the heart beat part on my sony discman, i was really struck. I grew up with a hearing disability and that was one of the first songs i listened to after a corrective surgery. Damn right i saw that tour live and was the best show i've ever seen to this day
Great way to describe it. It has a fragile and agonising vulnerability to it that shape-shifts into a monstrous mighty entity. Then reverting back to its original form preparing for the next phase. Like listening to a spontaneous werewolf transformation, the anatomy reshuffling like a dark miracle as the beast within runs free from it's shabby cell.
I’ve never heard somebody break a band like tool down like this 🥺🖤 and then he talks about chakras too. I’m going to have to subscribe based off of one video.
Pure joy to hear this analysis of Forty Six & 2. I have no formal training in music, but as a yoga teacher, I swear prana moves when I take this song in. It's beyond divine - and thank you for doing this!
I bought this album the day it came out... I was 18. It moved my life path. It molded who I am today. And even during this video it gives me goosebumps and hits my soul!!!
Holy crap when you explained what they did with the mix, having everything centered and letting the drums be the ambiance, and then throwing everything wide again for the riff @7:35... it blew my mind. I’m definitely going to have to keep that in mind when I’m mixing my own stuff.
One thing to add about Maynard: and this is geeking out even further, is that he sings somewhat chromatically (and the guitar does this as well). Most singers stick to a key or mode and maybe add the odd unnatural note. In this song there’s 3 modes happening all at once which adds amazing tension - push and pull. The guitar is playing in - I always called it East Asian major - but really it’s Phrygian major I think, and adding on that nice 4,3 at the end of the phrase to resolve it. Maynard pretty much ignored that mode and is singing in minor, and switching to mixolydian. He’s really going back and forth between the two modes, but never uses the flat 2 of the Phrygian. He uses that 2, minor third combo and then 4th and major 3rd to resolve the phrase. I don’t know if he just did it by feel or if he’s a theory geek. Either way it’s brilliant and it shaped the way I write music a long time ago. This chromatic playing is nothing new of course but is much more common in classical music. Maynard also does this 2,b3 / 4,3 thing in the chorus of the second track off this album as well. It’s very pleasant to hear. And you’re right that it’s in Celtic music as well. Listen to “I am stretched at your grave” by Dead Can Dance. The vocals in that song do something very similar.
The way I have tried to explain the "disjointed " time signatures is have you ever been at an intersection with your turn signal on while watching the turn signal of the car in front if you? Well they don't blink at the same time unless you watch long enough, eventually they get closer and closer then will blink 1 or 2 times together, that is what TOOL does all the time masterfuly.
That’s a great way to describe it to a pure listener. The common “technical” term used to describe the point in time when the two different car blinkers align is “resolve”. So if you have two separate (and concurrent) time signatures occurring when they will resolve at a common/shared interval. For the math inclined is basically a common denominator of fractions; but it is not necessarily the lowest common denominator since you are choosing when to resolve with intent when you write music.
No disrespect when talking about Maynard being one of the instruments, not the lead. That is how they approach it as well, even seeing them live Maynard is not at the front. He is just one part.
I believe that was the lateralus album. I saw that, the ceiling was a projection of fireballs imploding exploding, so the Silhouette On stage let you enjoy the show on the ceiling, it was great.
Tool is one of the few bands where the bass and drums aren't the only rhythm section of the band. Adam keeps time for Danny, Danny for Justin, and Justin for Adam. It gives each of them more freedom to "come and go" in a song, knowing there's always a way back. You mentioned Maynard's vocals. I've always been impressed by how much faith and confidence he has in his voice. One of the best examples of this is in "Passenger", found on Deftones' 2000 release, 'White Pony.' That one makes my arm hair stand up.
That first statement is the coolest thing I've heard someone say about a band. I'm a drummer and can confirm that it happens in bands that play together for a while, especially if they like to drop an extended jam occasionally. Each musician in the band (and the drummer too, hahaha) learns who they can hang onto as they wander away for a little while. I played with a band for 3 or 4 years and by the end we could jam for hours and not get lost. My bassist would nod his head in 4/4 while looking down the whole time he was off noodling some solo bit regardless of what signature he was following in his head. I knew that I could wander a bit myself and follow his head bobs to keep myself grounded and when he was ready to come back up for air his head would come back up, still nodding those 4/4 quarter notes out. Then I'd pull myself back together so he could anchor on me and we'd both hit a nice flourish together to signal to the rest of the band that should pull back together and change it up a bit. Those flourishes made it sound like we had it planned all along. That silent communication (I don't think we ever talked about it, this may be the first time I said it out loud) is the glue that makes being in a band feel like magic sometimes.
Great comment Jake. As soon as I read it I knew exactly what you were talking about. I've listened to this thousands of times, never really realised it...
MJK is one of the few male vocalists that stands out as another instrument in the band instead of a slightly separate part. Its great to hear a pro talk about why this song kicks so much ass.
Ok the Grudge is a perfect next step. The buildup of the "story" of that song to the climax is on the same level as this one and laterulus (even though 46 is my personal favorite.) Not to mention at the end Danny transcends his human form and goes ballistic as well as before that one key surprise I won't spoil. If you are gonna do more meshuggah first I'd suggest bleed or clockworks, bleed being one of the most insane endurance songs on drums ever with some crazy polyrhythms (even by Meshuggah standards) and clockworks is ghost note city with a lot of cool time changes throughout the song. Btw if you do either definitely watch the drum cams for them.
Good tracks but very in-your-face. Don't want you to think that's all Meshuggah does. They've got some groovier, more progressive tracks as well. Relatively 😆
What you said about the singer not being the lead is exactly why Maynard now stands in the back in the dark while performing. He says I’m just one of the 4 parts.
Dude, this was the best Christmas gift. This was the track that got me hooked on tool. Watching your reaction reminded of how it felt when I first listened to this
This song brings me back to my childhood. My dad played this song every time we went for a cardrive and as i got older our conversations getting deeper we always loved tool. This makes me so happy because we were both musiclly inclined but certainly no experts i shared this with him in hopes of this going places this makes me so happy!!
I have listened to Tool for years and was never able to pick apart the beautiful aspects of their music like you just did. Followed, looking forward to more from you.
My favorite Tool album. This album released in my prime of youthful ignorance (16), and I got to see Tool in concert 3 times in their hayday. Your attention to the detail and expert breakdown are greatly appreciated!
The problem with pausing that you are not getting (for some reason)...is it messes with the flow of the song...especially with a band like TOOL...cause they are so sonically dynamic as a band...when you play TOOL you play the song and you kick back and take it all in...i.e..the TOOL experience ..kinda tough and frutrating to have an experience when its broken up into sections...as oppose to being being just one section the entire song...make sense?...it should
@@gdub454 absolutely nothing wrong with taking in a section then thinking about it. Feel free to enjoy the song the way you want to rather then trying to force your view upon others. If you are trying to convince people I would recommend less condescension though.
This song is a prime example of the lyrics being reflected perfectly in the arrangement. The instruments constantly sound like their battling each other, sometimes meeting but eventually pulling away but meeting in a struggle in the outro.
The explanation for the 4-4 signature, lining up with others overlayed, is to liken it to blinkers blinking out of time together while people are stopped waiting at a yellow arrow in their cars. There's a point in time where all of the blinkers will blink in unison once or twice. This is the same as what you're trying to say here.
as much as I love the song, I feel like the majority of analysis would be repetitive given the nature of the song. It swells magnificently but it really is reiterative. One of the reasons I love it, but it's not as conducive to an engaging review, to me at least.
They are pure emotion, pure spirit and pure strength. They are powerful because they embrace their darkness and vulnerability and walk us through the torment with a knowing smile.
There are countless songs that compete for best song ever made but 46 & 2 ended the argument for me the first time I heard. It is such a powerful and deeply meaningful song that it has slightly diminished my appreciation for all other music and still to this day gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.
This whole album is a masterpiece. Hell, to call it a masterpiece is an almost insulting understatement. I’ve been listening to it for over 20 years and I’m still discovering not only new instrumentation, mix elements, etc in it, but new subtleties of emotion in some songs even. It literally never gets old. I also don’t normally like “reaction” videos but because this put me in a head space of hearing it again for the first time I’m starting to understand their value...
Polyrythm is almost, I hate to say, a signature of how Danny Carey plays. Is that a pun? Oh well, Tool is rad, thanks for the experienced ear and take away. I'll try to stave away from future puns...
@@almightytreegod ahh, $hi| it wasn't meant to be a reply to your comment, but it's own comment to the video. Sorry for the confusion, you didn't like the whole polyrythm (time) signature pun? 'hangs head' I'm a nerd, I know...
I get goosebumps when this track starts. Chills throughout the performance. That doesn't happen with just any music. It happens when the music is this good.

This album is arguably the golden age of Tool. Still has a good deal of the raw energy they started with but the polish that comes with patience, experience, and a budget.
Up there with my all time favorite tool songs! Of course this list changes daily and based on my mood but still.... Such an amazing groove and vibe throughout the whole song.
As a really big Tool fan, as I’m sure all of us are, seeing such a genuine reaction to the sheer awe that is 46&2 is so awesome, and really brought a smile to my face.
They probably would have thought it was blasphemy at the time, TBH (or at least Bach might have). Dissonance had been "emancipated" but not to this degree yet lol
I remember hearing this in 1997 and my friends and I would just totally freak out about the way the riff would intermingle between the guitar and the bass parts. It's like the bass would take on the role of the guitar and vice versa. And of course the drum "solo" in the middle section. What a masterful song and production. So many elements combine to make a truly majestic song that beautifully expresses the power and push and pull between the masculine and feminine, conscious and unconscious forces in the human psyche. This is Tool.
IMO (and it's only that, my opinion) APC is... mmm. How do I explain how much I love Tool and how absolutely intolerably bored I am by APC. There's (as a musician) nothing to talk about with APC. Time signatures are simple 4/4 time and sophomoric. Song written while retaining its pop sensibilities (unlike Tool) is easily forgotten and easily obscured by other bands of their ilk. Judith! Judith is a killer of a song... that's it. There's nothing else interesting to talk about. Rather. Listen to Zeal and Ardor's first 2 albums. You'll weep. You'll leap. They're truly unique. Please... do it.
Maynards only a vocalist. Without the band members in Tool he wouldn’t be Jack. The band as a whole is what makes them. Not just what Maynard touches.. just sayin.

So you can never really say for sure that someone else is robbing themselves of experiencing the same feeling a part gave you, cause in all likelihood it won't give them that feeling, anyway.
Besides, he CAN listen to the song again in his own time, if he likes. 😉
I do see why people get upset.
I love seeing someone say they actually got goose bumps or get a huge smile on their face at the exact same times that I did when I first listened.

Man, hearing composers talk about music makes me feel like an idiot. I just think it's cool when the guitar goes wawoowaawaaaaa.
When you said “wawoowaawaaaaa,” I felt that!

They've always had huge critical praise and respect among music heads, but if y'all think they hit the ceiling of how popular and well-known something can be, just like, no lol
It's like comparing Yes to Floyd or Zep - I like Yes better, they (used to be) critical darlings, and they're very very well-known, but they're not in near the same league of notoriety. In that way, you could definitely say they're underrated.

I love when musicians listen to TOOL because you can see them mouthing numbers trying to figure out these damn time signatures 😂
Also, "and then Danny starts to do what he's doing" or "Danny doing what he does" pretty well sums up how wild TOOL's music.

Danny blowing minds with his insane drumming never gets old.
Man I wish I understood this hahah
I once ate a hit of acid at a music festival and received total enlightenment.
Nice nod at DCD. Brendan Perry is some sort of subdued musical guru.
Brilliant interpretation and spot on.
I'm thrilled to know you're out there. 🎻
Ummmm, it's in drop d man.......
Omfg best description that makes so much sense lol
Thats one of the best analogies I've heard.
And when they do sync it's a beautiful and fantastic. Kind like when the dvd logo touches the exact corner of the screen
Saw them in Indy last year. Dude just walks around the stage and sings, at least that's what he did when my eyes were open. Lol

His facial reaction to the drum solo made this video for me.
Assistant TO the regional manager
Be long-winded man. You can NEVER dive deep enough into TOOL
Probably blasphemous to say, but I think Passenger is Maynard’s best song, vocally.
One doesn’t just listen to a Tool song. You have to listen to the entire album. Then the songs become part of a larger context.

You must be a dad... That "de-composer" joke is such a dad joke! I could feel the eyes rolling!
Agreed. Especially with the drum cams, you gotta do those!
Yeap.
I basicly just posted the same thing... I should have read the comments first.

@@rmr5044 Think I might’ve seen it, but to me, reacting to the original once is not the same as knowing the original well.
This song is a prime example of the lyrics being reflected perfectly in the arrangement. The instruments constantly sound like their battling each other, sometimes meeting but eventually pulling away but meeting in a struggle in the outro.
Merry Christmas to everyone checking out this amazing channel and song. Love the diagnostics and POV from a composer.

@@almightytreegod ahh, $hi| it wasn't meant to be a reply to your comment, but it's own comment to the video. Sorry for the confusion, you didn't like the whole polyrythm (time) signature pun? 'hangs head' I'm a nerd, I know...
@@danielslackergenius1641 OH... signature... yeah, I was looking at the wrong word. Ha. The door is that way. Lol
That reaction at 13:58 when the drums kick in is gold
There is no other like Tool, they send you on this adventure in each and every song
Reacting to Tool is neat because it's reassuring to realize that genius in music is still replenishing itself.
I get goosebumps when this track starts. Chills throughout the performance. That doesn't happen with just any music. It happens when the music is this good.
This man doesn’t just hear music. He feels it!
One of my favorite reaction videos!

First time watching your reaction video I have been a tool fan for a very long time😊love your reaction and your understanding of music. I was lucky enough to have seen them Live at Red Rocks amphitheater 😅was a long time ago but 1 of my favorite shows live... amazing and life changing I'm forever a Tool fan😮😊 Appreciate your videos loved your reaction thank you, Kevin Colorado
Love your Tool reactions, keep it up. I'd recommend Jambi.
Can you imagine if Bach or Mozart where to do something like this.. what would they have thought of tool .
Why did Mozart kill his chickens ?
Cause he asked him who the best composer was and they said Bach Bach Bach
honestly......i was like....this dude looks like my peers.
Invincible from their latest album is classical music 500 years from now.
They probably would have thought it was blasphemy at the time, TBH (or at least Bach might have). Dissonance had been "emancipated" but not to this degree yet lol
They wouldn't relate to Tool. Beethoven would.
You should try his other band A Perfect Circle Orestes! Everything Maynard touches is gold! Been a fan of tool for 23 years.
Not just what Maynard touches.. just sayin.
@@skittlesstarburst4532 that's your opinion not fact.
My fav song by them. So underrated
@@justinhartnell1423 I agree
Just discovered you. First video.
I absolutely LOVE the way you interpret and describe how it all makes you feel. I’ve been listening to tool for almost 30 years and I never ever grow tired of their chemistry.
