On this 'Strip Panel Naked', I take a look at Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely and Nathan Fairbairn's The Multiversity: Pax Americana. Looking at how the team build up and then break a structured approach to their panel design and layout, and what that means both in the story, and in a wider thematic way for the work.
Big thanks to Deniz Camp: denizcamp.com for contributing additional research to this episode.

After I finished to read Pax Americana, I came to TH-cam for someone who could give me answers. And I find it.

Frank Quitely doing a damn good job as usual. He's my personal favorite. Thanks for covering this.

That's some of the best news I've heard in a long time.

“I’ve read Morrison’s work twice: first when I wrote it, then when he wrote it.”-Alan Moore
This is Morrison dissing on Moore, hoping he's pissed enough that he'll back to writing comic again.

In Pax Americana, my favorite page is the 'murder scene spread'. Using something only comics have, showing multiple strands of time in one moment. The same way Watchmen did.

There's a lot to get at in this comic for sure. Hopefully I'll circle back round to it and get some more done on it in the future!

You could fill a book with how densely meaningful Pax Americana is. Such an incredible piece of sequential art. Thanks for spotlighting it, I still find it hard to really understand what that page is trying to say but that's probably the point; life and human nature can't be explained just as Harley's action as a child cannot be explained or truly understood as nothing more than an accident.

I think it's that, it's chaotic, which is life. And Harley starts to organise it as this 8-panel grid, and therefore control it, which helps explain a lot of the context for his decisions in the rest of the book. But yeah, it's complex. I'll definitely be talking more about it in the future!

Ah, The Multiversity! Possibly the greatest event DC has ever published. I think this issue might be my favorite (mostly for the reasons you mentioned), but I think that's a disservice to the overall connectivity of the comics. I think one of my favorite visual techniques it utilizes is the when the page is one image, but the panels separate it and makes the characters' movements look connected. It's like with Nightshade and her father, or the Question's investigation, I'm sure there's a term for it. I also like Ultra Comics and the way your physically reading the comic effects the story and how the characters interact; it's a comic about comics, but not in the Watchmen sense of genre deconstruction, but in the importance of comics overall as an art form and their uniqueness in that space. I think there's a lot of mileage you can get out of this one Hass, lots of stuff people missed (like this page, I got the theme, but didn't realize how the structure was important) with how layered it is, so I hope to see more! Just keep it up!

Neb Olevar There'll definitely be more on this coming, a lot to unpack and a lot of notes collected already! Some of the other issues have a lot of interesting points, too, so I want to get around to those as well! So much to talk about!

I love love love Frank Quietly's work. He's one of the best storytellers ever worked in this medium.
Me myself a comic book artist from Turkey. Just getting through all of your videos one by one. I can't believe the effort that you've put into these videos. This is what I was searching for all these years! It's only natural that I can't go through all of the comics in the market because of financial and time issues. So your work is golden for me and I think for a lot of other aspiring artists out there. Thank you so much! Will definitely support you via Patreon after I've dealt with my financial issues.

      Hey Ahmet,
Thanks for checking them out! Always gives me a big smile to hear people are finding these vids useful in their work, really glad! And agreed with Quitely, I adore adore adore his work! (Hence why he's got two episodes :P ) Hope to do more on him in the future, too!

Awesome, I've been waiting to hear you talk about this comic for months! Can't wait to hear more about it from you in the future. Definitely Frank Quitely's best work so far.

First thing I thought of when I saw that page was this one from Flex Mentallo:i.imgur.com/0nBZf8P.jpg
Not a 1-1 comparison, but the similarity is there.
I love that you can see the wizard Shazam on his throne.
The video was great, btw. It's always enjoyable to see others perspective on Pax Americana.

Quitely is amazing. This book seems to be a further exploration on what he likes to push like his work on Flex Mentallo. Still though in the series All Star Superman, there is this one panel that tells you everything about Clark Kent you need to know, the exaggeration of him pretending to be human while not spilling his coffee. external-preview.redd.it/loJAhgsL84yPrnlCG7BwnY20XxCiDruuBgNKp3eEpxE.jpg?auto=webp&v=enabled&s=475377e80bdb6c91dbbdbe74001110254f15e860
