If fitting a loft ladder and the edges are the same width as between the Joists, can they be screwed directly to the joist or should I get a narrower one and add timber?
I almost feel confident to do that by myself but am still gonna have a friend who knows more about these things than I. Mostly to have him there to catch me before I make the mistake I don’t want to make.

Hi. I'm wanting to do the same as this video on my loft. My loft hatch width is about 640mm though, so would I need to close this opening to fit a 600mm frame? I assume 40mm is too much??
Are you both worried about asbestos in the Artex when sawing through it? Did you test it first. I ask coz I'm in a similar position wanting to extend a small hatch in an Artex ceiling. Thanks a lot
Hmmm I was thinking I could do this until you got talking about packers and lost me entirely. Would've been great to video the packers thing. Still excellent nonetheless, I think if I can at least make the hole in the roof and reinforce, I'll be able to spend less on the carpenter to install the rest for me!

Don't forget to measure BOTH ladder rails and cut to suit! Sloping floors are a thing!
