    Another really good video, thanks. A point worthy of mention is beware taking power from a landing light as likely to be on a 2 way switch and sometimes is on the circuit labelled 'downstairs' at the consumer unit. My method is always to turn on the light I am going to use, then kill the circuit and if the light goes out you're good to go 😊

    I used your guide along with using a Quickwire switch and load and the results are a working loft light. I can finally see everything without a flashlight or a head light. Next up is boarding the loft, hope you have a video 😂

    Another great instructional video! I would just mention that the batten lights used in this video are Class II (double insulated) and that's why they don't have earth cores on the flex cable. If someone is using a Class I fitting then its really important that you connect up the earths!

    Useful video; I did mine years ago with a fluorescent batten (before LED light fixtures were a thing). Personally, I went for a "bathroom"-style pull-cord light switch mounted on a rafter above the hatch rather than a surface-mounted rocker switch. That means that the end of the pull cord is visible and reachable without even sticking my head through the hatch and I don't have to scrabble around in the dark trying to find the switch.

    There is a very important caveat to all this, and that this is appropriate to older circuits where there is a permanent live looped through the ceiling roses. However, in a lot of newer installations, there are permanent neutrals at the wall switches (required for many smart switches), and in that case the permanent live can be looped through the switches and not via the ceiling roses.
    Also, my preference for all surface mounted switches (expecially where they can get bashed) is to use metal switches. They cost a bit more, but are not only more robust, but I think they look better. In that case I would have also drilled a hole through the wood where I was mounting the light switch and run the cable through for behind, as that keeps the cable out of the way of stuff you might be manhandling through the loft hatch.
    I should add that I just spur off the permanent live, neutral and earth to the switch and then loop the neutral through the switch. That means no sleeving required as brown wire from the switch to the lighting unit is the switched live. It also puts a permanent live in the switch, which might be useful in the future (although I don't suppose a smart switch is the sort of thing you would put in a loft).

      Just tried to install lights and switch into my newly converted loft and found this out after running out all the cable and fixings 🤣 would I just have to switch the permanent live with the N from the switch?

    • @jeremykemp3782
      @jeremykemp3782 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Exactly what I would have done, less hassle , less wagos and like you said smart switches are a good thing. You could turn your light on or off from in your bedroom or anywhere else in the house without having to climb back up into the loft. To be honest, I am very surprised he didn't just go straight to the switch and just keep the neutral intact and then go and daisy chain as many lights as you like. God I remember having to use the old ceiling rose connectors. They were a right pain in the arse

    Great video, gave me the confidence to install two LED batten lights in my loft today. I copied your use of wago connectors/box and those fancy wire strippers and it made the job simpler. I wanted my lights central and pointing down though, so made some mdf ‘struts’ which I’m well happy with.
    Great vids, good camera work and helpful hints - thank u very much! 😊

    Fantastic video, love your presenting style, all step by step with no missing a step to leave viewers head scratching!
    I’ve always considered myself reasonably competent but I (obviously wrongly) thought an earth “circuit” had to be continuous, obviously not the case?

    • @tobysherring1369
      @tobysherring1369 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He runs an earth connection to each light fitting and the switch. The lights don't require an earth connection - many modern fittings don't. But the connection is there if needed in future.

    This is a brilliant video. The entire process was explained. Tools clearly demonstrated. At no point did I think I couldn’t/shouldn’t do this.
    But I don’t own a house. But I do store stuff at my sisters so time to price up the job.
    As for the pros. commenting, there’s no point using trade terms or acronyms cos the target audience for these videos don’t know what you’re talking about. If you want to help make a video explaining why we shouldn’t attempt anything and get over yourself.

  • @DummyFace123
    @DummyFace123 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is an excellent job and a great idea.
    However I’ve always been a fan of being modular in the attic because working up there is such a pita.
    What I did was install outlets that are controlled by a light switch.
    Another thing is turning the lights to face the roof and not your face. What’s been the easiest way to accomplish this for me is to use led strip channels. Led strip channels are very thin and easy to install, you can install them with simple spring clips and just face them away from you.

    Great video. I did exactly that in my loft earlier this year. Those LED battens are really bright so I used some in my garage as well to replace some old fluorescent tubes fittings. My next job is to raise the floor in my loft & add 200mm of extra insulation. I've also added some raised shelving in between the A frames in the loft for more storage space. Some videos on these projects might be of interest to your viewers. Keep up the good work. Subbed & liked.

      @@TheDIYGuy1 Dont forget the current regs require rcd protection be provided to lighting circuits now too if you plan on making any modifications or additions to the existing circuit, (I can see your lights already do, but there are a lot of properties out there that don't) Also the circuit should be checked before being modified, that its fit for purpose in the first place, which opens up a whole new can of worms of course.

    Thanks for an excellent video showing clear instructions. I love using the Wago connectors they make the job so much easier. Worth mentioning that if like me you have a larger light fitting in one of your upstairs rooms you can take loop from inside there and through the ceiling without having to cut into the cable in the loft. There’s usually enough room to get the cable through the hole and connect it up using the smaller more compact 221 connectors. Just an alternative to cutting into the cable that’s all.

    Great video only 2 things that I picked up on as an electrician
    Personally I would of taken the Feed to the switch in this situation and also got the feed from in the pendant meaning that no joints would be hard to get to in the future.
    Secondly I would of ether used a metal clad switch or placed the switch in a place where it is less likely to be damaged (ideally in a place so you can turn it on before entering the loft).

    Great video, I love European electrical work much more than in the US. The US has sooooo many different odd parts and techniques and are very cumbersome to work with. I love the Wago lever nuts too. I’m going to do something similar in my attic. I would suggest you mount the lights on the other side of the framing so they point toward the roof and also add another light on the opposite side so that you are illuminating the roof walls and not blinding yourself. Keep up the good work!

    Thank you so much for doing this video. I am in the process of flooring my loft and doing some work there. I have a light bulb on a long extension but it gives very little light. I am going to try those long lights and possibly try installing a switch. Appreciate the tutorial.

    Not sure if it's been mentioned but it would be worth adding a card to the video when stripping the insulation back that you need to strip 10mm back for Wago connectors, and they have an indicator on the back you can use to check

    I did some very similar in my loft but I connected it to a 3 pin plug with a 5 amp fuse in it and plugged it into a smart socket now Alexa turns my loft light on and off for me and the socket was wired on a spur from a ring circuit junction box in the loft, great video very and informative.
