  • Making your own wood iPhone or Wood Smartphone case is easy but time consuming. You really need to take your time, from picking out the best wood, to measuring and cutting the detail into the wood, all these activities take time, but the results can be outstanding. This smart phone case is probably one of the coolest project I have done in a long time and I was more than pleased with the results, esp with laser printing the logo ... and we think you will to if you build your own.

    Imperial measurements (73/128ths) sounds so nebulous.
    14.5mm just seems so much more readily visualisable.
    The purple heart looks amazing.
    Great project, thank you for sharing. End result definitely looks great, laser etching was a good touch.

      Well, now is a good time to start collecting them :) you will get great use of them over the years and there are some great deals on used ones too, but don't forget hand tools too, a lot can be done with these.
      Also, check out a woodworking club in your area, there are often other woodworkers who will give or lend you some of their extra tools, you will make great friends and learn lots :)
      Great to have you with us ... looking forward to seeing some pics of your work in the future

    Great case! I think I will have make one. I dont see this being anymore bulkier than the otterbox defender series. I really like the laser etching on the back. Great way to personalize it! One thing I would like to do different is to route a round over edge on it.

    What's interesting about the purple wood is it's super high density, and it's one of the few woods that will sink in water. It's also expensive.

    • @howycwap
      @howycwap 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brad Woody Its actually not that expensive, there are many african/south american hardwoods that are more dense than water and purpleheart isnt one of them. Cocobolo is

    Nice design and great layer of protection. You mentioned a wood that I've not heard of, I will search around for some. It does finish nicely. I agree laser put that over the top. Well done.

    • @knecht105

      Thanks for the note. This Arbutus is nice wood, especially for turning, it's like butter. Almost feels like a synthetic. Not sure if anyone sells it commercially. The trees only grow in a swath from northern British Columbia down to around mid Oregon I think, and all withing about 3 miles of salt water.

    To help with locating buttons, flash, camera... ext. Try using the scanning / copy feature on your home printer. Scan & print your phone (1:1 scale) of the front and back. Then in theory, you use this as an exact template for location purposes. A simple glue stick or tape can be used to lightly hold the paper to the wood.

    PRO-ject and a-GAINST. Not something I hear a lot here in Kansas.
    This is a really cool idea though. I wish I had all the tools you have. That oscillating sander... Man I want one of those...
    It's just a nitpick, but if I were to do this, I think I'd miter the purpleheart (or walnut in my case) just for a cleaner look. I'd have to do it by hand, but hey, perseverance!

    i just had a great idea i don't know if it will work but instead of gluing the back part you can use little screw to hold it in place then you can just swap the back with another back with a different design and that way it has a different look

    • @knecht105
      @knecht105  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could try doing that, just not sure small screws would be sturdy enough over time, but a good thought

    Great, is it possible to make it thinner?
    I'd love the lasser printing on both sides.
    You should take the road for gadgets, making stands and other things for tablets and phones.

    • @knecht105
      @knecht105  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adrian Hermosillo yes you it could be made thinner if the wood was sanded down a lot more with a drum sander, which I do not have .. yet ;)
      Thanks for taking the time to comment

    that's a big band saw blade! Never seen it before

    • @knecht105
      @knecht105  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol .. yes it is, only a 16 inch band saw but it only takes that big 2 inch wide saw blade because this saw is only for ripping wood, but it does a nice job of what it does do

    • @knecht105

      josh herold If fits in my pocket, but it is a bit thick ... not sure how thin I can go when using wood but will try this again with another phone ... thanks for commenting ...

      Nathan flokstra Hmmm ... interesting, I was going to try that ... I was thinking about laminating a couple thin veneers ... I might still work on that. Thanks for your feedback always good to know what doesn't work so we can move on ... thanks again buddy

    • @knecht105
      @knecht105  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol ... yeah, it gets lots of comments, but that is the only blade that can be used on that saw, it is strictly a milling or ripping saw.
