- Making your own wood iPhone or Wood Smartphone case is easy but time consuming. You really need to take your time, from picking out the best wood, to measuring and cutting the detail into the wood, all these activities take time, but the results can be outstanding. This smart phone case is probably one of the coolest project I have done in a long time and I was more than pleased with the results, esp with laser printing the logo ... and we think you will to if you build your own.

Great job Colin!
Imperial measurements (73/128ths) sounds so nebulous.
14.5mm just seems so much more readily visualisable.
The purple heart looks amazing.
Great project, thank you for sharing. End result definitely looks great, laser etching was a good touch.
That has got to be the thickest resaw blade I have ever seen.
Amazing! Not like most I've seen where it is too bulky. Stylish and can make friends talk behind your back! Nice job
grace calis Thank you Grace
That is the nicest case I have ever seen. If I didn't live in an apt in New York City I would love to have a workshop and attempt something like that for my iPhone x.
Thanks for the great video.
wow the case is great, the colors too, but the most amazing thing is that is handmade!
It turned out a lot better than I expected, great video!
Well, when I started it, I wasn't sure what it would look like either, but yeah, it did turn out well
Nice! A little bulky and no charging cutout, but certainly a unique piece!
i wish my dad was a carpenter, then i would have all those machines as household items haha, amazing creativity man! my dream is to be a carpenter, i will start making a case for my phone.thanks for the video!
Well, now is a good time to start collecting them :) you will get great use of them over the years and there are some great deals on used ones too, but don't forget hand tools too, a lot can be done with these.
Also, check out a woodworking club in your area, there are often other woodworkers who will give or lend you some of their extra tools, you will make great friends and learn lots :)
Great to have you with us ... looking forward to seeing some pics of your work in the future
Colin
Great project Colin. I think I will modify your idea to my iPad and then I can watch all your video through a wooden woodwork case.
Doug, that's a great idea ... and it even brings a grin to my face as I respond to your comment ... well done Sir :)
Love that idea think I will try to make one when I get more good about working with wood
Holy Crap...... Now that's a freakin bandsaw:) Look at the size of that blade;)
Robert Barcus YES IT IS MY FRIEND IT'S THE 1's THE BUTCHER'S USE 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Thanks for a great Idea and project for us, now a lot of us have the time to do these things.
Now thats a smartphone case ! very nice Colin .
Hi Peter ... yes, it is an eye catcher when ever I take it out in public.
I 'm sure it is .. I have to get some better wood an try this. TY
Love it Colin! Very cool project and video! I will make one too.
I've seen some of your videos, you make woodworking look simple! And sure is fun. I hope to find even a hint of such simplicity the day I start my first project. I'm getting a little workshop ready. I can't wait! Thanks for the inspiration.
ηємєѕιѕ I'll bet you will retain a lot of info so that when you start woodworking, you will be way ahead of where I was when I started. Hopefully you will share some pics with my of your builds ... looking forward to it
Colin
WoodWorkWeb
Defiantly! Cheers.
Great case! I think I will have make one. I dont see this being anymore bulkier than the otterbox defender series. I really like the laser etching on the back. Great way to personalize it! One thing I would like to do different is to route a round over edge on it.
I think you are right about the Otterbox ... would love you to post some pics of your version of this case on woodworkweb it you make it :) Always nice looking at other people's creations.
Please do a drop test to see how well it protects the phone. Great project.
What's interesting about the purple wood is it's super high density, and it's one of the few woods that will sink in water. It's also expensive.
+Brad Woody Its actually not that expensive, there are many african/south american hardwoods that are more dense than water and purpleheart isnt one of them. Cocobolo is
Nice design and great layer of protection. You mentioned a wood that I've not heard of, I will search around for some. It does finish nicely. I agree laser put that over the top. Well done.
Thanks for the note. This Arbutus is nice wood, especially for turning, it's like butter. Almost feels like a synthetic. Not sure if anyone sells it commercially. The trees only grow in a swath from northern British Columbia down to around mid Oregon I think, and all withing about 3 miles of salt water.
I dont usually leave a comment but this video was so great that i had to
Oskari Eeva Well thank you for taking the time ... appreciate your feedback.
Colin
what a great little PROject
Very nice Colin. Now I need a smart phone. I have a dumb phone, it just makes phone calls LOL.
Thanks Colin,
Roland
Hi Roland ... thanks for commenting.
Have a good one Colin
I think This is The best homemade Case Great Job
Hi Mohamed, I'm not entirely sure this project is the most practical, but it is cool, thanks for commenting,
Colin
yes, i agree with the other subscribers ... this is a very cool project. i'm not sure i'll make this project for the smart phone, but for more practical reasons, i bet its ideal for a tablet/ipad ... awesome thanks for the share.
Thanks for taking the time to comment :)
Colin
MAGNIFICENT!! very good job
Literally 30 minutes ago I was thinking about doing this for my ipad. - Great minds! LOL - Thanks for posting!
Hmmm ... great minds do think alike, maybe you should be working with me in my shop LOL
Happened upon this video and what a awesome project idea and it looks incredible. Thank you Colin take care my friend.
That was a great design ! So practical too, awesome job. Also, it looks very fun to do and I wish I had access to the purple heart wood, absolutely stunning color in that wood!
It was fun, and since I had to make up plans as I went along it was a bit of a challenge. The nice thing is it;s small and is something that could be done by a lot or people with just hand tools, although I used power tools to make the video a bit quicker to watch ... thanks for commenting and the kind words.
Colin
Another great video Colin, thank you.
+tigerland3 Appreciate the feedback
GREAT job !!!
Thanks for taking the time to comment :)
Colin
I congratulate you excellent work, very original.
Cool project, I have an iPhone and I like the way my Lifeproof (waterproof) case keeps my phone safe but it looks Boring, so I'd been considering making a wood phone case case lol.
Nevir202 Yes, this kind of case is not suitable for everyone, I made it just to show what can be done and that there are alternatives :)
absolutely beautiful
nice working....i like wood ..for furniture design, interior, anything.... this good video
kiky Sebastian Thanks for the feedback ...
It is a huge phone-wood sandwich, but I like it! :D
Hermoso proyecto, saludos desde Santiago de Chile.
Great idea, I have an iPod touch I want to do this with.
onemon22 Cool ... maybe you will share pics with us when it's done :)
love the vid...very clever indeed...well done Sir! Have you ever thought about baking your heartwood...Turns it the most beautiful dark purple!!
Bones Willis I have not tried that ... but I will, thanks, what a great idea
Beautiful case my friend and great instructions as well....thanks
Thanks Douglas ... appreciate the thought buddy !!
awesome job Woodworkweb! great idea and passion. i love watching people build things the old fashion way and having fun in the process. cheers from 8300 ft in colorado.
Reece Long Thanks for the comments Reece and greetings to you in Colorado. I have not been to your state yet, but pictures look amazing, hope to get there one day.
To help with locating buttons, flash, camera... ext. Try using the scanning / copy feature on your home printer. Scan & print your phone (1:1 scale) of the front and back. Then in theory, you use this as an exact template for location purposes. A simple glue stick or tape can be used to lightly hold the paper to the wood.
very nice, good video,
he sounds so similar to steve ramsey at woodworking for mere mortals!
I have heard that before ... hmmm, maybe brothers???
GOOOD JOB SERIOUSLY, i really like the case and the detail that you put in it, brilliant, also nice touch the little not :)
I wonder where he's from...
PRO-ject and a-GAINST. Not something I hear a lot here in Kansas.
This is a really cool idea though. I wish I had all the tools you have. That oscillating sander... Man I want one of those...
It's just a nitpick, but if I were to do this, I think I'd miter the purpleheart (or walnut in my case) just for a cleaner look. I'd have to do it by hand, but hey, perseverance!
I like to keep my Alabama buddies entertained with pro-ject .... kinda like pro-basketball and pro-football and yup, purpleheart would be an excellent choice
post-it note pad for mixing epoxy.... Brilliant i say, brilliant
lol ... thanks for the comment. yes, they just seem easy and convenient ... and you have amazing observation skills :) ... the first person to comment on this
I love your videos. Thanks so much for sharing
Music23 I appreciate your feedback, thanks for taking the time to comment :)
That's so cool the cutter thing, we have the same in my school but we call it a lazer cutter and we get to choose our design on the computer and watch the machine go. ours is so fast (not bragging or anything)
Got a new subscriber
Greeting's from London
Priscille Diakiese Excellent, make sure you learn how to use that laser cutter, not many people get that opportunity, that is such leading edge tool to learn. I am envious :)
great case but what about heat dissipation ? I made this case out of purple heart , Thanks it's a great case.Great video!
great work. Will make one for my samsung smart phone. Though you could use a router to make the slot for pushing the phone out.
Yes a router, or even one of those sanding drums that fits on a drill press would work too :) ... love to see some pics when it's done
will post the pics
Awesome case ! that is a fantastic idea for Christmas gifts :)
You are very good with wood, just a tip is project is usually pronounced praw ject
great video and awesome phone case. Also the pronunciation of project is "präjˌekt" haha i only noticed because you said pro-ject a lot of times. anyway thanks for the video
Awesome video! I'm just wondering if there could be a more versatile way of connecting the back of the case to the front. Would some sort of "clicking" system work, where little knobs of wood that are on the back of the case could go into little holes on the front of the case?
Sharif Schulze Allen There probably is some different ways of connecting the back, but I have not looked into it ... maybe some others will have some ideas on this :)
nice case for a phone but i think not many people want to walk around with a big square wooden box. (just an idea) maybe it would be nice to make the edges round .Would that be possible?
Wow this is so amazing. Pretty unique and solid. Love it
whataclassyhobo Thanks for taking a moment to comment
Great video. im going to try to make it fit an ipod since that's what I have
spooky5090 perfect ... would love to see you post some pics of it on woodworkweb for others to see when you get it done :)
Colin
This looks nice! i was actually going to make myself one and i saw this!
I can't wait to do this, but I'm going to do it by hand , it's what I prefer I feel like I can get every detail correct
+Gamer Kat Also check out my later version ... much thinner, but same idea th-cam.com/video/SyfNPppZucM/w-d-xo.html
jik
tukju
that was and amazing case i will make my own case and show it up later
Daniel Tenorio Cruz Perfect ... would love to see it Daniel
Excelente proyecto .buena idea gracias
Wallace William Thank you for taking the time to comment
That was a great video.
Think I need to make one of these for my 8inch galaxy tab....
Cool ... would love to see some pics of it when it is done Josh, and even post them on woodworkweb :)
Nice video sir but this case makes the phone practically unusable. Thanks for sharing
How?
The thickness of the surrounding wood makes swiping in all directions difficult not to mention that you actually loose a part of the active screen ...
Greetings from Turkey. It was beautiful, great.
Thank You!
really good job.i like this case.thank u for this video.
matiar rahman NP ... glad you enjoyed
What a great idea Colin, love it! Thanks for sharing :-)
Thanks Brian, amazing what can be done with wood isn't it
Very nice work would love to see your work you're an artist

Hamoody Abomary Thank you for the kind words ...

Chris

Colin
Nice video great project and one i will definitely be doing. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks for the note Chris ... and maybe you will share some pics of it with us when it's done??
Exceptional project Colin. Your videos are always something I look forward too.
Derek
Thanks Derek, I really enjoyed this one
Cool little "project"-(down here in Alabama we love how you say project). Always look forward to your videos, you are always having a good time and it's fun to watch. Dave
LOL ... I know, I love you guys down in Alabama, and every time I say the word now I think of you and it makes me smile. Always great to hear from you, hopefully I will down your way one of these years :)
Interesante el Trabajo is a really good job
denis torres thanks Denis for commenting
Whoaa!!! Amazing! I love the design. Love it.
Arif Rachman Thanks Arif for commenting ...
another approach I like as well
Diresta: Phone Case
His you can't see the screen ? The guy is Amazing but this case is much better !
parabéns ficou show
That saw kickback...
That band saw blade is scary
"We are down to 9/64th of an inch" It's time to implement that metric system ;)
Much respect i loved the case do you make cases for others like that i would love one so much !?
Ruben Alvares Sorry, no I don't but thanks for asking. I am hoping to make some others in the future and hopefully will have learned some lessons from this one. Thanks for commenting buddy ...
i just had a great idea i don't know if it will work but instead of gluing the back part you can use little screw to hold it in place then you can just swap the back with another back with a different design and that way it has a different look
You could try doing that, just not sure small screws would be sturdy enough over time, but a good thought
Great vid just now seen it you should make them in production and sell them
Shadow There ya' go :)
oh god, i love the metric system *-*
That is phenomenal !! I am so gonna try this!!!!
lol ... sounds good, maybe you will share some pics of your version of this :)
Thanks for commenting ...
Colin
Hopefully it'll look as good as yours and not like something out of Beattlejuice. LOL!
Very nice but very heavy ... cool video I like it
+Christian Mendetzki Yes ... check out my latest version ... much improved
Great, is it possible to make it thinner?
I'd love the lasser printing on both sides.
You should take the road for gadgets, making stands and other things for tablets and phones.
Adrian Hermosillo yes you it could be made thinner if the wood was sanded down a lot more with a drum sander, which I do not have .. yet ;)
Thanks for taking the time to comment
that's a big band saw blade! Never seen it before
lol .. yes it is, only a 16 inch band saw but it only takes that big 2 inch wide saw blade because this saw is only for ripping wood, but it does a nice job of what it does do
very nice work on the case.
Thanks Magnus .. yes, it's a bit different alright.
Thanks for commenting ...
Colin
Bro no way the maddest idear ever good job
ZD Skateboarding Thank you my friend for your kind words
Next you should make a slim case. This is great, but can it fit in your pocket.
josh herold If fits in my pocket, but it is a bit thick ... not sure how thin I can go when using wood but will try this again with another phone ... thanks for commenting ...
WoodWorkWeb I tried it with veneer, too thin, wasn't very strong
Nathan flokstra Hmmm ... interesting, I was going to try that ... I was thinking about laminating a couple thin veneers ... I might still work on that. Thanks for your feedback always good to know what doesn't work so we can move on ... thanks again buddy
Outstanding
I haven't ever seen a bandsaw blade that wide!
lol ... yeah, it gets lots of comments, but that is the only blade that can be used on that saw, it is strictly a milling or ripping saw.
Hah ikr
nice idea & good job :) .....
I love that case
Lucas Walter Thanks Lucas
I would like to buy one for my Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 and your wooden speakers so I can glue them together for my office desk
HIGHWAYMAN9674 Sorry, we do not sell these, this is only a video showing one kind of woodworking that can be done
