I always use Excel for my replacements. Also because I need three differentways to write a name. In excel you can combine prefixes with the numbers and players, so you don’t have to do it manual.
So for example I would use ‘s’ for Stoke City, and then ‘s1’ for ‘Mark Travers of Stoke City’, ‘-s1’ for ‘Mark Travers - Stoke City’ and ‘--s1’ for ‘Mark Travers’. This I can autocombine in Excel, and then pitch side I can easy fill in the different fields in my IPTC fields.
If you would like an example file, let me know!

I have been searching for tutorials like this for a long time, and this one is the easiest and most understandable. Thank you for sharing your knowledge; it's invaluable.

Wow, I do a lot of work cleaning up copied text, and I have NEVER seen the alt-drag trick you you showed at 8:05. That might be the greatest tip I've gotten from you - and I don't mean that as an insult at all!!

how do you do that? I can't replicate it!

@@colbrazier on Windows, in every text editor I've tried (except VS Code, and even in Word, but that was not great), just hold down Alt and click and drag the area you want to select. It's awesome!

Quality video, cool to see this process, I think I'd get lost in it all quiet quickly, if was was a sport photographer.

I do my txt very very similar to you, I just use excel to organize the files and copy/paste faster.

That was very interesting Mark, I never realised there was so much organising to do pre match. I can see now how you get the files off to the agency so fast, whilst still being able to take shots of the game..Good luck with the camera and insurance.

Similar set up Mark except I copy each squad list from the Leagues website and paste into MS Excel. Its easier to format into columns, sort and add in text etc before re-copying the end version and pasting into Notepad for import into Photomechanic.

Not sure if Notepad++ works on Mac but with Notepad++ you can record a macro/action and tell it “repeat the action 20 times”

Great video, and I follow a similar workflow. One wee thing, though; newspapers are printed at 150-300 dpi. I'm a graphic designer turned photographer, haha! Screen resolution is 72 dpi. If being really pedantic, it's ppi.

Nice video Mark, always good to see how others do things!
I do things very similar, but with a couple of small differences. I set up a IPTC file pre-match with all the vital info (who's playing, the ground, etc): doing so allows me to import a batch of photos, make my selects, and batch-apply the IPTC file to the selects. I then just have to go through and add the players' names at the front of the IPTC caption file (which I do via code replacements), hitting Ctrl+N (Windows) to save the IPTC changes and load the next image. This significantly cuts down on the time I spend typing instead of taking pictures, and also means I can be confident I'm not forgetting to add any vital information to the image metadata.
I also shoot in RAW, as that allows me to keep all of my computer-based workflow "inside" PhotoMechanic: selecting a photo in PhotoMechanic and hitting E (to open it in the default editor - Photoshop), because it's a RAW file, it opens in Adobe Camera Raw. I apply my edits, hit Ctrl+S (to save), opening the save image dialog box. Pre-match, I went through and set up the settings in here to how I want them to be: this means I don't have to change anything or make any decisions, and can hit Enter immediately upon the dialog box opening - instantly. Without even looking at the dialog box - which then automatically saves the image to my chosen destination folder, at the resolution, file size, with the filename, etc I need it to be. Because it's a RAW file, opened from PhotoMechanic, saving the image also "saves", "inside of PhotoMechanic" if you like, the changes I made to the image in editing (so if I need to come back to the same image later to re-edit it - for a photo competition, Instagram post, different crop ratio... whatever - it's exactly how I edited it and I can pick up from where I left off).
I have my FTP program "monitoring" the destination folder: as soon as a new image is saved, it automatically FTPs the image through to the client/s. This means that as soon as I'm finished editing and have saved the image, it's automatically winging its way to the client, I don't have to manually drag it anywhere, saving precious seconds. By using shortcuts, and not clicking on buttons, I also save several seconds per image in editing...
    The video was a good'n!

Great Video. I always put the Match date first on set up folder then team vs team, so when I save the folder on external hard drive under football, it will save in date of game order under football on disc.
Covering on whole football pyramid I cover steps a few step 8 but generally 9 & 10, non league 4 - 6. I already have a folder with various teams for the 2023 - 2024 season already used plus general shortcuts i.e. gfb goes for the ball etc plus ref referee for name. I will then go to the match I am covering on the league, and if from fresh copy players registered from the team and paste to Text Wrangler or just update existing previous saved teams player names. I will then say b space bar tab then say Brockenhurst before the player name then a space after the name. When a team board or sheet, I will at the match add shirt numbers ready for captioning.
In Mechanic under code replacements, I will have 3 files, team B, team T and a shortcuts , then update just before the game. plus a set up picture from anywhere already used. A pre caption wii read during the Brockenhurst vs Team Tuffley Rovers name, type of match FA vase then date of match as I hope to cover later today for my local paper if the match is on.
Using a Nikon D5, as I take pictures, I sort them out for the ones I want saved during each half, then half time and full time send pictures saved to laptop under first half or full time. I will quickly check pictures before cropping and captioning in Mechanic, dumping no good pictures then send to Mechanic for cropping and captioning. If a paper requires first half straight away, edit at half time, then second half after the match, otherwise finish off after the match and send off.
As I have 10 sides to try and get action pictures in the paper coverage area, the paper will have a stack of stock images for a later usage, and can search a player name and find images, plus match and date in the file. To send files, I always use We Transfer to send the files over. This season, I have managed to cover 9 out of 10 sides, and no.10 has a good club photographer, so I do not worry too much. Luckily derby matches, I can cover 2 sides together. Some clubs, I may send copies, 2 sets, one watermarked for social media etc, and the other for the club program usage to hold in with the club.
Finally apologies for the long comment. I have been covering non league for about 14 years or so now, and my local paper now about 7 years. Also, for a while, I had a Football League Licence, but now too busy for the paper coverage generally up to 2 matches a week in the New Forest SW Hampshire west Dorset area.

Great tutorial once again, i do something similar except the basic IPTC has to be inputed on every image. what did interest me is the Hot Folder once the image is dropped into this folder FileZilla automatically uploads it to an sFTP site. could you do a brief tutorial on how this is done.

    My workshop is as follows:
    1. Previously, I have a ready template with IPTC Metatags.
    2. First, I prepare a file export template in Lightroom
    -----
    3. During the match, I tether in Lightroom, select photos, crop, quick white balance adjustments, etc.
    4. Export in Lightroom to the working folder
    5. in PhotoMechanic Live Ingest from the working folder to the target folder along with automatically adding a template with IPCT tags and changing file naming
    6. Quickly add a description of who is in the photo,
    7. Upload to FTP.
During a match, sometimes it takes no more than 1 minute from taking a photo through tethering, exporting and adding people in the photo to uploading it to the server :)

Hi, thank you for the Video!
    Two questions:
    1. Why do you crop to 5 by 7 and not to st else (4 by 5)? Personal choice or st the papers want?
    2. I usually import to Lightroom and use a preset instead of actions. This way I can modify a couple of RAW images at once and than export them as JPGs. I know actions are a powerful tool but are there other reasons for using Photoshop instead of Lightroom?
    Have a nice weekend, Mark!
    Greetings,
    Sven

I have a question over a question, why do you guys crop any different than 3x2???

    • @SvenPries
      @SvenPries ปีที่แล้ว

@@guelbergoes In my case: soccer players tend to be vertikal in pictures. I crop very tight (except when empty room is needed for text or something).
I try to exclude everything that is not important for the situation. I usually cut away 30-70% of an image. In the end I do mostly have 1:1, 3:2, 2:3, 5:4 and 4:5.

I’m all for sharing what I know. The main reason for starting this Chanel was to hopefully help others who like me when I started, as a weekend warrior I might add, received very little advice. We all have to start somewhere and it’s not us as people that shine through but our photos, they do the talking. Guessing you’re a staff photographer perhaps. I think it also keeps us on our toes with new blood coming through. On the whole, we’re not really threatened I don’t think as our photos do the talking. Can understand what you mean but don’t really agree with not helping others👍🏻
