- Have you wondered if you really could ever ditch your current life, and start homesteading? Could you grow your own food? Build yourself a house? Meet Rae Machado, a young woman who is doing just that. Take a peek into her life in the “Dancing Rabbit” intentional community outside Memphis, MO. Originally from Hollywood, CA, Rae wasn't happy with her hurried, materialistic lifestyle - successful on one hand, but seeming to bring more debt and disenchantment than anything else on the other. She craved “real life”, whatever that meant. She visited the Dancing Rabbit Eco Village in northeastern Missouri, and it was love at first sight. For Rae, the learning curve was steep - working as a model really hadn't prepared her for growing her own food. But she learned quickly, even building her own straw bale house with her partner Elliott. She now acts as a spokesperson for the community, contributing her P.R. and media savviness to the cause of intentional living.

It's nice to see people quitting city life for eco-villages. it looks so better than 9 to 5
its much better. People work so they can get money to pay for food, water, gas, electricity, etc.. but if you decided to grow your own food, harvest your own water, etc... you dont need to work for anyone else, and you will not suffer if the system fell apart because you are self reliant and not dependent on the system.
Remain a slave by working 9-5 for a job you most likely dont actually want for someone else and still have to depend on the government or become a master of yourself and get things done on your own?
You will be SEEing a lot more of THIS with what is going ON in our country, people will NOT have much of a choice.

It is a warm feeling I get seeing the best of 60's earth culture returning... these are people experiencing life in the moment, appreciating every action for what it is. The Boomer generation had lot's of hippies, many of them lost their way. I hope this generation is more realistic about what one can expect from life... in the end, it's all about who you have loved and the things you have done together... even plastering a hay bale with mud will evoke deep memory.

I've been watching Dancing Rabbit via the Fellowship for Intentional Communities (FIC) since it was a community in forming on pretty much bare land. It's so wonderful to see how it's grown and "meet" some of the communitarians who call it home. Thank you.

Makes so much sense but little this is known. Unless and until one is fully awakened it is kind of difficult to convince others that a debt free and stressful life is possible. OMG love it !!! I want so much to live like that!! I love to hear the rooster 🐔 so relaxing to wake up really early and start tending garden and feed the chickens as i dig and find worms i did that in Bayshore NY had 75 chickens love 💕 it

If I had the means to acquire large real estate, I'd open it up to a community like this. Where everyone would be welcomed. A place where one could rest their weary head and live free as a dignified human being. FREE from the shackles of the system that is imposed on us.

They forced people to attend paid workshops even if they can't afford it or just can't attend them.
@@jasonmillers6941 best thing is to live in a n neighborhood where people are trying to live more sustainably. Communities like this where someone owns the land and everyone else has to listen to them ultimately fail for good reason

Cool community. Met Rae and lots of folks while visiting in 2014. Great people, ponds, food and projects. I highly suggest people check out their visitor program. We did and found a community in NM and our time at DR helped in that process.

I would give almost anything to live the life they are living. Unfortunately I'm nearly blind and living on disability so I don't see it ever happening. Sad. I do plan on planting some things as soon as I can but I don't really have much space for that seeing as I'm in an apartment. Luckily I'm in a small town in Kansas that has lots of fresh garlic grow all summer.
hello Leah. garlic is a food group at my house. ive been watching videos about intentional communities. and its very tempting to try. things on my farm arent working out very well. i have had a severe nystagmus since early childhood and it will eventualy make me blind. keep living and growing. and most important, keep learning new things. it makes life worth living. have a great day.
Get together am sure many feel like we do buy together as cooperative we trust landlords, developers why not trust a group of people that wish to live natural as for going blind its ok if you have a group that is loving this they will help you as it happens and you will learn to move about and plant your garden!! Think positive even if it may feel at times different, you will be able to smell the rain, the soil, even the wind the mist of the dew its so beautiful
Community is the key here: you need to find a highly, highly committed group of people (yourself included), and cooperate to start an eco village or join an existing one together. The power of working with others is that they can help you compensate for your weaknesses while you do the same for theirs.
I am disabled too but currently am in the process of starting an intentional community with a group of people I know and like the other comments said- community is key here- one of my key points I brought up as we are establishing this community is that fair and equal labor and people doing what they can based on what they are able to do and capable of - the right community will accept you and accommodate you and your needs
I love your lifestyle and learned about your community a couple of years ago. I love seeing it in video. Please send positive vibes our way that I will someday talk my husband into moving in that direction. We homestead 1/2 way now but not enough for me.

Most people just don't want judgmental "Christian" views shoved down their throats. I also believe in God and Jesus, but almost hesitate to call myself a Christian. It's because the Evangelicals have used the name of Christ to judge and be hateful to others. That is actually the exact opposite of Christ's teachings, but you can't tell them anything!

I want this! How do I live like this? I genuinely love this lifestyle! I have skills that I can contribute to dancing rabbit. I feel the world I'm living in is not right for me, it doesn't suit me, it never has! Iv tried to do the mainstream jobs but I ended up failing due to anxiety so I became a mobile cleaner. For all the jobs iv done this one gave me peace because I can work on my own yet at the same time I have my Co workers to work with me in some larger areas and so I make friends. I like making bows from Any Wood staves I can find for target practice. I never shoot animals only targets. My main hobby is macro photography. I love spiders and so I love to photograph them in their natural habitat aswell as the insects that they feed on. Tbh I'm not sure what else I could write. I know this isn't an application but I'd love to contribute and I'm sure I could give, one way or another! Please consider me!
I lived at Arcosanti, and Lost Valley, I met a ton of folk from Dancing Rabbit. I wonder if you knew any of the folk I knew.
I really enjoyed your video. I'm sure this video is a few years old as you were farther along in the process when I visited in Oct 2015. It was meaningful to get the opportunity to work, if only for aa few hours, on the building of your home. What you'll built is a thing of beauty.

You are really blessed . Thank you for sharing your peace of Heaven with us. Be careful though - I am in construction bus. and know that it will take only a few winters for rats to settle in your cozy walls. Make sure you treat walls with cement or plaster at least at ground level.

I always wonder how long people actually last there, this life is very pretty and seems to be everything we ever wanted but in reality it’s a lot of work with lots of bugs and heat and cold. If I ever do anything like I’d have to do it on my own

Not too many people in society are going to be very understanding or even believe that this can be gratifying they just have all these attachments and they probably might even think she's a little off her rocker because she did kind of overkill it it's probably just the romantic side of her soul
I get what she's saying you don't work for someone else being debt-free is the ultimate freedom because it eliminates all the stresses particularly if you aren't striving for anything there's no competition there's no feelings of not being able to meet your needs and having to struggle when you know things and you're able to do them yourself there is a great sense of liberation in that
It pretty much eliminates your need or desire for anything much outside of that because this is something that you can do for yourself and be able to help others to learn the same and there is nothing better than that knowing that you can contribute to someone else's prosperity and abundance. I don't know how many people like the idea of buying a genetically modified tomato for over $3 when it's mostly water but filled with the most horrible things you can possibly think of I mean who would even come up with doing such a thing to a fruit except for mad man?
But you know people don't want to be responsible for themselves they'd much rather work hard and have someone else do the work for them and pay them I don't know if it's a sense of superiority in some way that they have the capacity to afford other people to do the things they themselves will not but to be able to trust that individual or that group is a whole nother set of issues because as it is organized now it's not like you can trust people because they're bottom line is to make as much money without spending as much money and yet they actually charge you less for produce that they spend a lot of money poisoning and the stuff that hasn't been poisoned they charge you double that really is counterintuitive so like she said you sell a seed you nurture it it grows it produces vegetables or fruit and when you pick it fresh you get it with all the enzymes it's still alive and that is the best time to consume you don't want to eat it when it's immature just like you don't feel like dealing with immature people and you don't want to eat it when it's rotting because well then when it's decaying it's actually dying and you don't want to put death in your body because if that's all you're feeding it well then that's what you become. Now while I'm on the subject matter if you're eating death meaning anything that was murdered and has no life force to it which equates to being cooked then you can be sure that that's all you're contributing to your body and that the outcome will be equally as just distasteful as the way you reacted to the mention of it
Too many people think it's like a secret club or some type of special group and we're trying to grow ourselves and that's our only motive that we're not actually sharing information that is not only useful but accurate and true and they're in denial of it because they don't want to change and their taste buds are programmed so they continue to live that life not realizing that it shortens their own lifespan and maybe they don't care about that but let's face it quality is always going to trump quantity so even if you live to 80 years and you consumed as much as you could in every possible way do you think it would bring you happiness? I can promise you you can never fill that void by losing your integrity or compromising your well-being no matter how much you consume less is always going to equate to more there is a richness in mono consumption anyway I hope there's something here that can be gained. I have lived a very simple life up until 3 years ago and then things got pretty complicated
I lived in extremely rich life on a shoestring budget. Now anybody that's living in such a village or has lived such a lifestyle would completely understand what I'm saying. I didn't want for anything and everything I had was so rich in flavor and nutrients that my body didn't search for something more and neither did the rest of me my life was very gratifying
I have to tell you I really miss that I just have a few hurdles right now money is not the main goal what people are really searching for and completely unaware of is the ability to feel safe secure stable and satiated with the life that they've created not one that was dictated by someone else whether that be an individual a community a group a country a government or a family.
you have to have a lot of self-love to have the courage to be able to embark on a life that is completely different than the way society believes you're supposed to live your life. I raised three children and the irony is is I ended up becoming my own person and they couldn't digest that they couldn't understand why I wouldn't go back to being the person that used to be and I would say to them well if you know better than you do better but they knew better and they didn't because they couldn't let go of the worry that people wouldn't accept them because they themselves didn't feel confident in who they were so I can totally see the treasure behind living in a community such as this. I am very interested to know more about it is there a cost to living there or purchasing a piece of land so that you can build? I mean what are the expenses outside of exchanging work or resources what monetization is there in this village and how does one embark on making that change because clearly some of this stuff takes a while to put together especially if you're on your own and if you have to pay somebody and money is an issue because it hasn't been your focus and you've been getting by by the skin of your teeth but really you're ready to embark on putting in the energy and the work that it requires to be able to build this type of lifestyle are there people there that are willing to help you see this dream come a reality without feeling the need to be compensated in such a way where you almost feel taken for granted because I see that in the world everyday. I've been living in my car for the last 3 years I'm still here for a couple of reasons one because it just isn't possible to live this cyclic debt imposed life and try to get yourself out of it while living a convenience life that isn't convenient and it isn't affordable because pretty much whatever I make on a daily basis ends up going to some one else and whatever I have spent on myself is really excessive not because I'm careless but because things are just really expensive for example if I go to a restaurant and I buy four sides I'm charged $9 that's takeout if I choose to dine in then I end up paying about 13 to $14 with a tip and that's without getting a drink just a glass of water. When you spend that every single day that's a lot of money at the end of the month when you need to warm yourself with your vehicle and charge your phone and run your car that takes gas it also puts wear and tear on your vehicle when you have to shower you have to pay at the truck stop and when you have to launder the few pieces of clothing that you own that also costs so you have car insurance legalization inspection which isn't too bad because those are only one time a year but that revolving debt of car insurance every single month believe it or not can be pretty excessive even if you reduce it to the bare minimum and then you're without protection should something unexpected evolve. You lose your interest in pushing forward to live a life that wasn't meant for you that just keeps demanding from you and never allows you to be at peace within yourself. So yeah she's right no mound of fame or fortune is ever going to fill those voids it'll never complete you it's just an illusion and it takes and it takes and it takes until there's nothing left

A lot of them will use wood heat I imagine. Cob is often used ti build rocket mass heaters. Their are lots of ways to extend the growing season as well, especially in the south. I imagine they have to buy at least some food anyway.
Bethany Lade I’ve lived in NEMO my whole life, and while some people may see it as southern I don’t generally consider it to be. Our winters are just as harsh as a lot of the north and summers can be hot and dry. I have to imagine they rely heavily on canning their produce/root callers or something of the like. I’ve been told they’ve got some impressive tech out there it’s just progressive tech.
exciting! Land without buildings is still cheap if you check for sale by owner with water and electric hook up near by. some places allow tiny houses but check the local laws.

All kinds of things keep coming up. If only large batteries were cheaper. We got wood gasifiers, heat exchangers, hempcrete, solar panels, micro hydro, micro wind, shower loop...

Unless your vegetarian, have you thought of raising Goats, hogs and chickens? Maybe aquaponics for fish? Just a thought. I love the use of hay bales and mud construction.

I've been following Dancing Rabbit for a while. Very impressive sustainability in practice. you may want to consider more electric vehicles(EVs) I see you have one! (2nd hand are very cheap to replace 2 of your diesels.) EVs powered by local solar or wind drastically cut down the health risks of the Biodiesel and the GHGemissions as you know.. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5556143/
PV to EV especially if you install the solar yourself will be more affordable than the diesel- less repairs, less maintenance, no oil changes, no tail pipe emissions (no tail pipe) You can get a good used Nissan Leaf for around $7000. After the vehicle life is over the batteries from the Leaf can be used to store solar energy for the village. Congratulations on all your successes and wishing you a sustainable village.
So-called "electric" vehicles require electrodes and electrolyte and they come from somewhere at some cost and risk to some people who mine them.

Hi Slower, it's not a cult at all. Everybody comes with their own spiritual / religious / political beliefs and dis-beliefs. The only thing people have in common there is wanting to live a slower (ha !!!), closer-to-the-land-and-Nature lifestyle without typical consumer wastefulness. And folks do share, IF they want, some meals regularly, help each other, that kinda things. It's just a traditional village basically, before the advent of petroleum and social isolation.

This is the life, peace and happiness that me and so many others need. THAT'S RIGHT PEOPLE...seems the native americans and other indigenous people had heaven on earth till God and "salvation" came along. Now we gotta go back to mother earth and the village life to find salvation and purity of spirit. . They called that pagen life. What a coinkadink.
