One of my favorite things in video games that was not on the list is New Game+. The ability to take skills you have learned throughout your playthrough as well as buffs or debuffs give great replay value. It is one of my favorite things about the Tales series.
I wan't very good at the combat in "The World Ends With You" It wasn't that I was controlling two characters; it was the fact that I can only focus on one screen at a time. Personally, my friend and I play the game together at once, one of us fights on the top screen with the D-Pad and the other on the bottom screen with the stylus. It's actually really fun.
You know the typical "parents hate video games" schtick? I thank God every day that I'm blessed to have come from a *family* of gamers. My mom, dad, brother, and even my grandparents have been known to play video games.
I agree with a lot of things in this list. That said, there's a very key, _VERY_ overlooked element of games that I'd like to give some recognition. Jumping. You know how jumping works in real life? You make a big effort and. . . I'd guess most people can jump upward 1 - 2 feet (not counting bent legs and such). Jumping in video games is the _single largest argument_ against the ever-increasing realism of games. Platforming games, fighting games -- none of them would be possible without the higher jump heights and lower fall speeds of games. Plus, it only gets better when you consider the extra techniques in many games. Mario "Jumpman" Mario himself is the master of this. Long jumps, double jumps (both on ground & in air, in Smash), triple jumps, backflips, crouching jumps, midair spins, forward leaps - *each and every* element of these jumps has been perfected to a science. It's truly beautiful.
Quarter Guy, even though you might not see this or you might hear it all the time from others, I just want to say that you are practically one of my heroes in life. out of all of the video-game countdown artist's there are, you were the first one I saw and still my favorite artist to this day. I am a big fan of almost every video game franchise you list in your countdowns and are a great motivation to my life in video games and out in reality. I hope that someday, I can meet you in person.
One thing I feel is EXTREMELY overlooked in games is a really good soundtrack. Music can make you feel things in a game. When a character dies and sad music can be heard, it makes you that more sad. On the contrary, a kickass orchestra or metal jam during a boss battle can make you hype. Metal Gear Rising is the fucking master of this. EVERY song in the game is just as over-the-top as what's happening on screen when it plays. From Red Sun to The Only Thing I Know For Real, to Collective Consciousness, every single boss song in MGR gave me endless amounts of hype while playing the game.
I love powerups to! But do you want to know what metroidvania game has the largest amount of them? It's Rabi-ribi. You can get stuff like a hammer, a fairy that uses ranged attacks for you and later have 7 ranged weapons, a wall jump, a spin attack, reistence to spike damage, the ability to move freely in water, the ability to see in the dark, a ton of badges that do cool stuff when equipped including one that makes it so that bosses don't do colision damage or one near the end of post-game that gives you a smaller hit-box, a double jump, a slide, a faster speed, a amulet that gives you free Invincibility frames, many different buffs, lots and lots of stat potions hidden everywhere, and Easter eggs that makes your rainbow egg attack stronger! There is even more of the powerups that i don't have enough time to talk about, but with this many amount of upgrades you can get in the game, you go from someone who can not attack and moves so slowly, to an unstopable bunny fighting a 20 minute long boss! Yes, it takes 20 whole minutes to best the end post-game boss.
...you know what? You're right. I am better than I think I am. I'm going to get to work on editing the first episode of my first ever Let's Play. I've left that footage on the backburner for long enough.
Funny thing about Invincibility Frames. I actually used them to cheese one of the Master Thief Sprints in the first Sly Raccoon game. You know the level in the first world with the barrel? Where you have to waste a lot of time escorting it through the level? If you're close enough to a lucky when you start, you only need it for that first carpet. All the others can be ignored by rolling fast enough, save the one at the end, which you can get past with the horseshoe. Much faster than the expected time.

Probably my favorite are living, breathing open worlds. The best example of this comes from Xenoblade Chronicles X. While out in the field, you may see a few predators chasing after or devouring a much smaller animal, and at night, you'll see certain animals sleeping, while others that sleep during the day come out. You may even see some drinking from a nearby lake or river. Its little details like that, that makes me really like open worlds.
I'm plenty thankful for the family that raised me, the friends that I made, the celebrities (including youtubers (such as you QG so thanks) and voice actors) I admire, God himself, and the stuff I experienced from anime, video games, and pretty much all media that made me the man I am now and I'm happy with just that

I do enjoy my fair share of games with character customization and power ups, parts of what makes them so good is the immersion of a character you create and the replay value when your trying to collect all the power ups scattered around the world. Multiplayer is a mixed bag for me, as I'm not a huge fan of competitive play mainly b/c I suck in PVP situations but I tend to enjoy a game better in a cooperative setting, coordinating with other players is possibly the most fun you'll have (though b/c my friends are mostly busy I have to settle for matched co-op, and sometimes you'll find that one player that you do not want to run into that doesn't coordinate with the group or isn't equipped for what you are trying to do and tries to get carried when you need all players at their best for the encounter). A couple of things I like that weren't mentioned were a currency system, as sometimes I like to have a choice over what to get, whether it's an upgrade and or equipment that improve the character, maybe a few healing items to heal myself and or others. I also enjoy exp systems, as what better way to be rewarded than reaching the next level increasing your stats and sometimes gaining a new skill upon reaching said level?
I love character customization cause I think it's cool to create your own custom character cause it's like putting yourself in the storyline. And I do love difficulty increases if done right for example Dynasty/Samurai Warriors: Empires games, Monster Hunter series(for the most part), Dragon Ball: Xenoverse, Pokken Tournament, J-Stars Victory VS+(When the game doesn't implement the stupid dodge powerful attack but still get hit by the air shockwave glitch), SMT games(for the most part), and Fire Emblem games(As long as luck isn't a deciding factor). Yeah I like the game to get more challenging but I want the challenge to be fair not so hard that I'm on the borderline of rage-quitting looking at you Mighty Number 9.
Things I like in video games? I have too many to list! Time trial features; snow and ice levels (yes, I said ICE); throwbacks/references to older games; multiple answers to the same problem; something I call 'arcane-design' (basically where a dated video game's mechanics actually make it feel better, like Ratchet and Clank and Tony Hawk Pro Skater); multiple characters that all play differently; and the list goes on and ON!!!
LOVE all the nods to Shovel Knight. And the #10, I actually got the World Ends with You because you made Sho Minamimoto seem pretty damn interesting. And the game was just plain fun, with you to thank, otherwise I would never have heard of it or Shovel Knight. And I'm in 10th grade, America, so SK is my hold on sanity sometimes. And I can agree with most of the stuff on this list, using Shovel Knight as an example. Level select: Would you love the game if you had to start against Propeller Knight with no upgrades or relics? Maybe not. Invincibility frames: Oh, YES. You kinda need these to avoid getting comboed into a pit or spikes. Powerups/items: Ooh, I want that one! And that one! Seriously, I've played the game to get Penny Pincher/True Shovelry/Naked Plague/TEETOTALER, and it was not merciful (but damn that perseverance). The Plague of Shadows, Corrupted Essence, and Propeller Knight fights took SEVERAL tries EACH, although I have gotten better. But the Smoke Bomb, Big Boom, Phase Locket, Flare Wand, and Leech Liquid are trusted friends still.

A game that makes good use of the unlockables system is The Binding Of Issac, with over 300 unlockables upon the release of the Afterbirth DLC. Plus, there are the milestone achievements like Golden and Platinum gods. And you say collectables are becoming a thing of the past...
My personal list: (Not sure what would and wouldnt count, so) 10. Super bosses 9. Boss rushes 8. "WTF" endings. Let me explain with just a few examples. Endings C and D in NieR, Mother 3's ending, Eternal Sonata's ending, 7. Rival bosses (Asch from Tales of the Abyss, Black Knight from Shovel Knight, among others). 6. Powerups. :P 5. Co-Op 4. FAIR difficulty increases. 3. Exploration on a grand scale. (Xenoblade anyone?) 2. Atmosphere (it'd take too long to explain, so just atmosphere.) 1. "Cinematic" bosses (Bosses like The Masked Man from Mother 3, *censored because spoilers* from NieR, to name a few).
I wish more fighting games made you unlock characters as opposed to having them all at the beginning though one exception is the case of Saiki in king of fighters 13
This can go either way, especially with fighting games. Unlocking characters is a great way to introduce new players without overwhelming them. But if I'm already pretty good at that series, I don't want a restricted set of characters straight out of the box, especially for multiplayer.
I mainly play through single player modes in fighting games and if all there is in some games is arcade mode I would like a little incentive to keep playing
Have you played the World Tour mode in Street Fighter Alpha 3? You build your character's stats and moves after each battle until they're insanely powerful. By far the most fun single player mode I've played in a fighting game.

I wish more fighting games made you unlock characters as opposed to having them all at the beginning
though one exception is the case of Saiki in king of fighters 13
This can go either way, especially with fighting games. Unlocking characters is a great way to introduce new players without overwhelming them. But if I'm already pretty good at that series, I don't want a restricted set of characters straight out of the box, especially for multiplayer.
what if they were only locked during single player modes (not online)
That strikes me as a fair compromise, especially so people won't blaze through story mode as Shin Akuma on the first go-through.
I mainly play through single player modes in fighting games and if all there is in some games is arcade mode I would like a little incentive to keep playing
Have you played the World Tour mode in Street Fighter Alpha 3? You build your character's stats and moves after each battle until they're insanely powerful. By far the most fun single player mode I've played in a fighting game.

Multi player isone of the reason I like lego games. I used to play with my brother heaps. Now I play by myself lego games are still my favorites.
