  • Following up on my test of ECO mode, where I got 31 MPG, today we test similar riding conditions in non-ECO mode and see what we get.
    This channel chronicles my adventures using a 2023 Can-Am Spyder RT Limited as my only conveyance. We’ll go on a great adventures as well as mundane errands. We’ll also discuss accessories and gear for the Can-Am Spyder.
    I usually wear a Tourmaster Transition 4 jacket, a Scorpion EXO-AT950 helmet, and either Klim Baja gloves or Joe Rocket Windchill gloves. I use a GoPro Hero 10 camera and a Purple Panda mic, and I edit video with Final Cut Pro on an iPad Pro.

    I would suggest you look up The Smoaks Vlogs. He is a Cam Am Ambassador and a long time certified Spyder mechanic. He advises to NOT use eco mode due to carbon build up. Just a little food for thought.

      After watching that video from Shawn Smoak, eco mode has been permanently off since then. And I find my Spyder performs a lot better.

    I have two 2018's and both get around 35 MPG most of the time. I like going vroom vroom on on ramps!!! My riding buddy gets a couple mile per gallon better most of the time, his shorter and does not ride with his windshield all the way up. He also runs higher air pressure in his tires. Like any highway vehicle wind and speed have an effect of mpg. I run 87 octane all the time, and see to reason to use higher octane gas. My first RTL Chrome was purchase in Oct 2020 with 5400 miles on the clock and is at 24,000 miles. I seldom go much over 65 MPH and run on cruse control most of the time.
    Last month I did a 1800 mile bucket list/repositioning of this one from Arizona to Washington State via the Northern Ca Coast on highway 1 and 101, 101 in Oregon and Southern part of Wa on 101. That one is in the hospital getting a bunch of new tupperware and right side radiator replaced, as I hit a dog coming out of the ag inspection station at the California border on I-10 half way through the first day on the six day ride to Washington. Stop leak, stress, and a lot of testing for leaks in Blythe and I was able to complete the ride.
    I carry a key ring with lots of keys, so I like the Spyder OEM key carrier. My spare key is hidden in one of the lockable storage compartments. I have a third non chipped key cut on ilco X270 TMC1 blank that will open the compartments that stays on my key ring. When I am off the trike on a ride, the key goes in my riding pants "watch pocket" or back in the holder on my key ring. Somehow loose the key and I can get to the spare.

      You’re way ahead of me on Spyder experience. That ride sounded awesome.

    Eco mode is for in town driving or use in a Parade ,it takes the jerking out and smooths out the throttle.

    That has been my experience as well (2021 RT). I get BETTER milage with ECO mode OFF. I used to use ECO mode all of the time then one time I took a trip and forgot to turn it on. I got way better MPG so I started testing like you and found the same result. By the way, I love the pencil trick on keeping the seat up. I look forward to trying that.

      Eco mode reduces your HP and so you end up twisting the throttle even more to get moving or keep a steady speed . That's what happens with my car anyway . Spyders may reduce power another way .

    It's because the road is wet, less fraction on the road 😅. Ha ha. I enjoy your videos, Chris. So keep up the good work. I am going to buy a Spyder RT Limited, and I find your videos very helpful. Safe travels.

    I went on a 70 mile ride last week on the freeway on my 2021 RT Limited with my wife and averaged 34+ mpg. But, I used a lot of cruise control as there was not a lot of traffic. Yesterday we did 52 miles without using it because we were in heavy traffic on the freeway and we averaged just over 34 mpg. That’s some of the best mpg that I had since buying the Spyder. My usual gas mileage is 30-32 mpg
    At the end of the month we’re riding up to Solvang, then further up the Central Coast and back home, over a three day period. I’ll let you know what we average.

    Hi Cris, I’ve gotten 35+ mpg with my wife on my 2018 RTL. nNot at 70 but 50-60. Taking Smokes advice and never use eco. Don’t know why they even have it. Appreciate your videos.

    Last weekend my wife and I drove our two new spiders, RT LT and a Sea to Sky from Denver CO to Moab UT. Fantastic trip BTW. Basically both bike are identical. We chatted back and forth on intercoms comparing remaining range. I calculated I was getting about 2 miles more per gallon than her. I was filling both tank and both bikes were off ECO. I also noted that my GPS was showing I was going 2 miles per hour slower than that indicated on my speedo. When the bikes are fully broken I will do a more accurate analysis. However, I am of the opinion calibration of the speedo and odometer on each bike may vary. Given different bikes different results. I also notice when I told her I was setting my cruise control to 70 mph she did the same and over time our bikes did not stay up with each other. Never the less, we both just laughed and enjoyed the ride!

      Wow, that adds a new twist. If our standards aren’t calibrated, who knows what is what?

    As mentioned below "Shaun Smoaks" master mechanic on BRP products and TH-camr says not to use ECO Mode.
    Have a great time in Seneca Falls (Bedford Falls), we do the "It's A Wonderful Run/Walk" there each year a great time is had by all.😎😎 Lastly while an informative video I follow the rule "Get On And Ride" can't take the money with me in the afterlife😁😁

    My findings were very similar to yours. Here in Québec, we no longer have ethanol free fuels available unfortunately. Also, we have available 87, 89 and 91 octane. Some Petro-Canada stations (owned by Suncor who run Sunoco) offer 94 octane. However, we do not have offered 93 octane which I have seen at many stations in the USA. I have read articles, although I am not a chemist, that say that ethanol mixed in fuel can raise the octane rating some. Nevertheless, I always put super into my Spyder with a rating of 91 octane no matter the station. Very interesting video Chris! Cheers! P.S. I also post videos occasionally on my channel should you wish to subscribe. Carpe diem et veho!

    I experience that with my 2023 Rt. Also consider that you may be riding into the wind on the 1st trip and the wind blowing with on the 2nd trip. I’ve noticed that the headlight design isn’t very aerodynamic on the Rt model. I can feel the air drag with a frontal wind. I wish Can Am had a aftermarket headlight lens that is more arrow dynamic.

  • @DFWMoose

    I would note that you filled up with 93 Octane and the 2nd Fill up was 91 Octane. This difference will have an impact on the MPG. Now I’m not Familiar with NY stations but the ECM will have to adjust between the two Octanes and the lower octane won’t get as good of mpg as the higher octane. You’ll get various mpg based on Top Tier vs non but not 4 mpg. My bet is today you were going with the wind and yesterday’s was against but you’ll have to ask Bob Seger. 😂

    • @SpyderMinimalist
      @SpyderMinimalist  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bear in mind both tests started at the same gas station with 93 octane.

    • @DFWMoose
      @DFWMoose 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@SpyderMinimalist okay but if you’re switching to 91 it will take nearly a tank to adjust. Also if you were close to 1,500 miles and now somewhere over 2,000 the engine will be breaking in further.
      I would recommend you control the test aka like they do in Bonneville and go 2 hours then fill up and go back the way you came.

    Do you track mileage with the Fuelly app? Data uploads to their website for all to see.
    Might be interesting to test ethanol fuel vs non-ethanol.
    Live in the general area you started from, I know that exit. Wife is getting a Spyder soon!

    your engine is getting broke in. the first one was before 3000 miles. then after that it gets better and probably better after the oil change.
