3,000 Mile Service for my Can-Am Spyder. How did it go?

- I reached the 3,000 mile first service point for my Can-Am Spyder, so I rode to my dealer, Buck’s Motorsports in Akron, NY. Mentioned @SpyderWayne and @CoachBob3 as just two channels I watch that identify where they are located, though there are many other great channels that do so.
This channel chronicles my adventures using a 2023 Can-Am Spyder RT Limited as my only conveyance. We’ll go on a great adventures as well as mundane errands. We’ll also discuss accessories and gear for the Can-Am Spyder.
I usually wear a Tourmaster Transition 4 jacket, a Scorpion EXO-AT950 helmet, and either Klim Baja gloves or Joe Rocket Windchill gloves. I use a GoPro Hero 10 camera and a Purple Panda mic, and I edit video with Final Cut Pro on an iPad Pro.

Chris the 12v accessory has a wattage limit because it’s not wired directly to the battery. Thus it’s limited in the wattage/amps it will flow. There are other 12v accessory systems that are wired directly to the battery via a non-switched circuit thus it will handle the increased load of your compressor. The other benefit of direct to battery is you can connect your trickle charger to it.
You can find those other options at SpYderExtras or Lamonster garage.
I used a direct wired on both my Sea to Sky and F3.
Nicely done.
I was about to ask him if the docking station was wired to the accessory wires or to a different source. I have mine wired like yours directly to the battery. I think it's the best way to do this. You don't have to worry about a plug sticking out from your frunk when you use a tender.
I put an end on my compressor that hooks up where the tricklcharger does works great.
I use the same docking station. I use it to charge my phone mainly. I built an add on cable to wire in my Zumo XT. In the NC,Tenn,VA mountains the cell signals suck most of the time. Thats why I use the GPS.
I’m going to do a series on this machine on my channel I will mention you. Ride safe and in peace. Also let me know if you ride with others on motorcycles?
I usually ride alone but I’d be happy to ride with you. One of your videos on the Spyder helped solidify my decision to buy it. I’m in Niagara Falls, but often ride down in the Southtowns and Southern Tier.
@@SpyderMinimalist I’m East Amherst we ride Lake Ontario sometimes mostly souther tier. We’ll see a ride up. Keep posting and I’m very happy I helped you 😊
Hey Chris, been watching you vids and I just subscribed to the channel. Just wondering if you would share what video and audio equipment you Use? Been thinking about recording some of the trips I do for my own use. Your input would be much appreciated.
Thanks for subscribing! I use a GoPro 10, with a Purple Panda mic tied in through the Media Mod. I edit on Final Cut Pro on my iPad Pro. Good luck!
Total waste of time. Just show the dealership and what they had to say about all your issues. Boring as watching you drive for almost the whole video.
So sorry you didn’t like the video. Ironically, since I’ve been posting videos, this one has been by far the most popular. But I do appreciate your comments.
I use my air compressor via my Battery Tender connection, in the Front Trunk. I have a 12 volt lighter type female plug, that connects via the SAE plug for the battery portion of the Tender, works well.
I’m going to buy one of those. I just ordered a portable jump starter that has a 12V port, but having an SAE version would be good also.
Also for the auto-leveling suspension, I’ve best noticed it when stopped at a light, after a few seconds I’ll feel the rear adjust down a little bit
Would Rain-X have kept the rain drops from collecting on the windshield? I'm still in the "dreaming" stage of acquiring a Spyder....I don't need a rear seat (the wife says no) but that supplies a spot for speakers, doesn't it? I like my oldies...(I'm 70). Thanks for taking the time to make the video, very informative and I'm looking forward to the results of the RI trip.
The RT Limited has rear speakers included. I’m not sure about Rain X.
@@SpyderMinimalistI’ve got an option to get a 2022 or 2023 sea to sky new from the dealer for $22k. Think it’s worth it? They have two to chose from.
@@americandude3825 wow! That’s an awesome deal! I paid a lot more than that for my RTL.
@@SpyderMinimalist it’s at motomeber in Northern VA. They are the biggest can am dealer in North America. Not sure if I mentioned that yet or not.
@@americandude3825 I believe Spyder Wayne bought his there. He had a good experience and recommended I consider buying there.
I loved your video. Small comment. Could you cover up your dashboard during editing because it just keeps flashing from the sun hitting it
I’m still learning the editing software (Final Cut Pro). I learn new things every time I edit so I’ll consider this as I progress.
Question: Can you tell me (us) about the accessory with the extra USB connections to charge your phone and other devices? That looks brilliant!!!! Thanks for the informative videos as well!!
Here’s a link to the product: www.slingmods.com/canam-spyder-rt-2020-up-handlebar-mount-12-volt-docking-station-with-usb-charge-ports?search=12v
@@SpyderMinimalist my 2018 rt limited came with the charger on it. couldn't live without it.
@@davidunderhill3225 I’m hoping Can-Am will make charging ports standard equipment, outside of the glove box, on future models.
@@SpyderMinimalist i hope i got it right, i actually meant that very same charger.
@@davidunderhill3225that’s what I thought you meant. I love the charger, but it’s hard to imagine an expensive touring machine not including c(ragers as standard equipment.
To be honest your music selection is the weakest part of your videos, I do enjoy your videos and the information you share, the music not so much.
I appreciate the input. I’m wrestling with it myself.
As far as the 12v plug for the air compressor, it is the amp draw of the compressor blows the fuse. You may ask your shop if you can just change to a bigger fuse, or run a separate fuse soley for your compressor plug
Shawn smoaks recently had a video showing a Spyder undergoing the 28k service, the bike is pretty much torn apart to do it
Something to look forward to.
I haven't pulled the Tupperware back off but it's wired backwards somewhere if you reverse the wires the USB will work. I just tested mine and it was backwards plugged into the factory plug. I thought the USB was bad, I bought two new USB ports with 3.0 and type c plugs. One side has voltage meter as well.
How did you disable the annoying parking brake alarm for 30 seconds?
I just learned to always put the parking brake on. Forgetting is painful.
Looking to get into riding but have severe balance issues. Add to that I must wear a special brace on my left lower leg due to bone issues. Would the Spider or the Slingshot or a trike be a good idea?
A Spyder would certainly be better than a two-wheeled motorcycle. You should find a dealer who will let you test ride one, or the other models you are considering.
I wouldn’t due a trike due to having to lean or be caution more than typical in corners.
Spyder or slingshot - go for it
On the grill covers, I'll be doing those too. On the air suspension, I notice when my wife and I are both riding and we stop at a light, you can hear and feel the rear suspension "drop a little. Then it must lift up a bit again after start. On the seat shock, I had replaced mine with a stronger one from Lamonster or SpyderExtras. On the brakes, yes mine squeak like yours do and I am at around 7k miles. They just squeak when not hard braking like yours. So I assume they are just dirty. Ride safe!
My dealer said the brakes on Spyders, and Rykers, are known to squeak.
The seat backrest screw is easily accessible when the seat is removed. Instructions for that are in the owner’s manual. Unlock the seat, pull the large bottle-opener looking thingy down low near the rear and lift the backrest up to remove it. Use the Allen Wrench in the tool kit to adjust the screw that is seen when the bottom seat leather is pushed upward. Counter clockwise moves the backrest forward and vice versa. Hope this helps. I just adjusted the backrest on my new Sea to Sky - moved it forward - and it’s delightful now!
My dealer pointed out the screw, which I couldn’t find, and no I have it adjusted far forward. I love it!
It's a shame about the copy right issues and the music, I do understand the legal side but you can't beat a bit of Glen Campbell or Johnny Cash. 🙂Maybe lineman for the county would have been good if it was allowed especially on those freeways and long haul ride outs.
Glad your Spyder has been serviced and the seat issue and phone charging problems have been fixed. She should be good for many more miles now. 👍
I hope so.
When you reference other channels (Coach Bob, Spyder Wayne, etc.) you should probably put links to their TH-cam channels in the video description. 👍👍
Yes, definitely. I’ll add them in.
I have it on my Spyder, use it for my garmin gps & it works fine. My air compressor has a usb charge cable.
Ride safe regards Stephen Alberta Canada.
Thanks for the info!
Watching you drive by the Air Base brought back memories. I drove that for 15 yrs while I was in the reserves.
Lots of changes at the base. I forgot meet the new base commander last year, Col. Contino.
So you dumped the cager altogether? I have been thinking along those lines myself. I think the savings on insurance alone not to mention maintenance and upkeep would pay for the bike. Ya think?
Does that MC have cruise control?
Yes, I sold my car on April 2nd. The economics are complicated. Yes, Spyder has cruise control.
@@SpyderMinimalist Thanks ... I live in SE Looziana where insurance on cars is Confiscatory but my Honda Shadow is only $250.00 a year.
Have the dealership install a battery tender loop on your battery. There are a number of motorcycle style small compressors that have that type of connector, or you can get an adaptor to change it to an automotive 12 volt. So you can keep your current compressor.
Further explanation about the slingmods power outlets. They are not made to handle the amp load needed for a compressor. They use smaller gauge wire that will melt if used for high power accessories. That's why they have such a small fuse installed to keep that from happening. The battery tender wiring is heavy enough that it can handle the amp draw of a compressor.
I have a battery tender now. Thanks!
What rain gear do you use and are you happy with it? Safe travels to Rhode Island and look forward to the videos.
I used FrogTogs rain pants and a cheap Columbia waterproof jacket. I also have gaiters that cover my ankles and boots if it’s really bad. I am happy with them. Not expensive, but they work. I’ve even worn them over a business suit and when I took them off the suit wasn’t wrinkled.
Good deal on your 3,000 mile service. As far as music goes, I don't monetize my channel so I use whatever music suits me. A recent video featured a Beatles' song and TH-cam notified me about the copyright, saying the video could not be viewed in the following countries; Belarus and Russia, so what! While making a short, I choose a song right out of TH-cam so there is no issue. And I haven't had any issues with the other songs I have used. It's your channel, you be you! Cheers Chris!
I guess I better cancel my move to Belarus.
@@SpyderMinimalist 🤣🤣🤣
28000 service is 1100 dollars
I'm around 1800 miles on my '23 Spyder RT Ltd so it will be interesting to see the 1st srvc comparison.
I don't bend well so I have considered those grills for the radiators too. We're you getting the ones that use VHB tape so no screws? That tape can hold down solar panels on a van's roof. It's that's strong kind of tape.
I believe the Slingmods versions use magnets and screws.
@@SpyderMinimalist And tape included in the kit I understand as an alterntative.
@@K22MDL do you have a source for those grills? I’d like to check them out.
The squeaking brakes could be just new pads. You can not hear it as much in a car due to being in-closed and using heavier braking. New pads do squeak just a little.
I’ve got over 3000 miles and still squeaky. My dealer service manager said it’s just one of those things that Spyders and Rykers do.
@@SpyderMinimalist I have almost 4,000 on my Spyder and the brakes are squeaky. I'm pretty sure it's just the nature of the performance pads.
@@SpyderWings-gx8cf pretty much what my dealer said.
My wife’s can am is 10yrs old with 8,000 miles, and the brakes still squeak. My mom’s (2019) and aunt’s (2017) can am squeak as well.
Love your videos I need a Spyder.
Thank you! I’m loving mine.
I was quoted 650 for my first one. It will happen in like 1k miles.
It could be varying costs related to location.
Just had my RT Limited 3000 mile serviced picking up tomorrow $570.00 😢 worst than my Harley's
@@JOHN-qo6ce sorry to hear that.
I have never really understood why there was background music. You're not making a movie so why establish a mood. Nothing I watch for educational value needs background music. To me it is just distracting I would rather listen to the Can Am and wind. I also don't ride with music so I guess I'm weird. But I do like following your Can Am journey and I'm curious how it parallels my Can Am experience.
I appreciate the input. Opinions vary on the value of music. I’m not completely sold.
Which Spyder do you have and mileage , any factory related issues ?
@@thomasdausch8557 2023 RT Limited. No “major” issues. Watch my 1000 mile review video for my thoughts.
