My late fiancé was Filipina so I was already very familiar with the culture. After she passed away from Covid, there was nothing left for me here in Texas. So it was a pretty easy decision for me to leave and retire in the Philippines. I already knew about the low cost of living, the ample use of the English language and the friendly Filipino culture. Now I've already got a ticket from Japan Airlines in April so I'll be there soon to start the next chapter of my life.
God be with you matey. My condolences.
My own journey to Asia began after my first fiance died from a rare complication when I was 26. I lost complete faith in my culture for a while, especially our reputation of best medical in the world at the time in Australia.
Philippines, as you most likely know already, is definitely a better choice for recovery, healing and starting that new chapter.

I love the Philippines, I am a Filipino Canadian but when I reached 80 yrs old I will stay in the Philippines for good, I am 78 and 2 more years to go by the grace of God, seniors are still worth it in the Philippines, they still have value, they still respect the old people

Here in the Philippines, you don't have to earn respect, you're born with it.
Teachers, Doctors, Police officers, etc, and Elderly people are automatically treated with the highest respect.

I retired in Las Vegas and everything you mentioned was spot on. I left the area in August 2022 and settled here in Manila. So far, I'm happy and doing well.

I lived and worked in the Philippines in the late 80s-90. My wife is from Iloilo and we have been married for over 30 yrs. I retired early and she still works. I miss the pleasantness and can-do attitude of Filipinos. I also miss that because it was a foreign culture, it was an interesting life. I also like how the US $ goes far...if you buy Filipino foods. If you purchase solely American/Western foods, I think you will end up spending a lot. I also think, that if you have a Filipino family, through your wife or girlfriend, they really appreciate any help you give them. Americans, even our own children, have become very entitled, not appreciative of the life their parents have provided. Philippines is still a people culture and they will appreciate the good deeds of someone.

I have some friends who work abroad for how many decades after they retired from work they preferred to go home here in the Philippines because they realized the cost of living here is cheaper than abroad.

Yes sir it is much cheaper here in the Philippines. In California where we used to live before is just too expensive. I still remember what Oprah said on her show, she says "If you live in California, 1/2 of what you earn goes to your housing." This is also the reason why my family and I left the US, eventhough we were already US citizens. Over here we have our own house, built in the year 2000. We came back for good in 2008. Like what you said, prices goes up but it still is much cheaper living here in the Philippines than in the US.

As a world traveler, the one distinction many people miss is when you go to a developing country; it doesn't automatically mean it has a high crime rate. I have always felt safe walking around in the poor neighborhoods of a developing country. However, I feel unsafe going to my local Walmart and won't go to a poor neighborhood in the USA.

The highest crime rates in states are poor area in general why would philippines be any different? poverty brings crime i feel much safer walking in my neighborhood in states than i do Philippines

Thats true that even the cars they steal!! Even my online package from amazon? They steal in my porch and even oir mail box they steal my bank card they used it!!!! I just finally knew that i have to pay $1,800 which i never purchased. Men!

I have been living outside Philippines the last 36 years, 27 years of it is in the US. Having said that, I got so much used to the kind of life here. I totally understand where you are coming , because I feel those worries you had at times. It's pretty quiet where my family and I live, but it doesn't mean we don't worry about gun violence that has become the norm anywhere in the US. My wife is a dialysis nurse and I am a Business Manager for a facility of Dept of Corrections, and our earnings combined will never be attainable, no matter what we do, if we were living in the Philippines. Nonetheless, the idea of retiring in the Philippines is a part of our long term planning. Only thing is, we have three children who have grown up and educated here and it makes a little harder to fully retire in a place so far away from them who are certain would not ever leave US. However, it may not be a bad idea to live six months in the Philippines and six months in the US. Thanks for putting out your opinions and your reasoning for living US behind. It sure will help a lot, myself included.
Mike, of all the videos I have watched on here about the Philippines not just by you, but by others that's post, this has by far been the best. I'm in my 60s and been considering the Philippines for over 13 years. As of lately I have been doing a lot of research and looking into making the move. Everything you stated is correct not just in Vegas but everywhere. I live in the Midwest (Kansas) and it's the same here. The people, the prices of things and our politics have gotten out of hand and I'm tired of it. I want to enjoy my time I have left not struggle. I have always been a person that looks to the positive and love to laugh and make others smile, but now it seems like i have become a different person one I don't like because of the way our country has changed. And being old here it's like they just want us to go away and not get in there way. I am still very active and want to enjoy life, here you can't. So thank you

The older i get the more i could care less what other think in U.S or Philippines politics crime poverty or whatever. Mind your own business especially in Philippine stay below the radar that smiley friendly face may burn you trust no one my filipina told me that . Do i think my neighbors will steal from me no they will Philippines she once had clothes stolen she left out overnight had her bike helmet stolen lost her wallet never to be return with her IDs etc lost a phone to be returned of course not. I like my neighbor we look out for each other we know each other grow kids . Philippines is no rose garden without a lot of thorns .

What about the availability of medical services? Medications, types of equipment to keep you alive, etc.?
I have been coming to the Philippines since 1979. I live in a tiny town in rural Australia, and don't have the issues you mentioned, but the lack of amenities and isolation will eventually wear on me. I really appreciate your vlogs, and after meeting you and some of the other vloggerrs at ground Zero, I'm going to reassess . I like Dumaguete, and I like pilipinos. Thanks again.

I first started thinking last year about leaving the states during the fall/winter months cause I had bought a new snow blower and still found myself wrestling with it to clear the snow. I was sick and tired of the cold, snow and ice and the fact that I was getting older and simply finding myself unable to physically handle a lot of the chores I used to look forward to.
The PI crossed my mind because English is widely spoken, I LOVE islands, and cost of living seems relatively inexpensive.
My plan is to spend 2 months in PI from mid-November to mid-January, Thailand from mid-January to mid-February, and back to PI from mid-February to mid-March. And, finally, back home to the states.
Can't wait! Just earlier today I was online working on an itinerary of the areas to stay while I'm in the PI. I've got 2-3 more years to work on it so, by the time I get there, everything will be well laid out.

my husband & I decided to go back to Philippines once we retire. I plan on reting 10 yrs from now when I'll be 65 yrs old. US is not what it used to be.... i miss Philippines for the culture. Most people are not rich but we have rich culture and values! ❤

I have always believed the 2020s will be the beginning of a new wave of men who have had it with not only the topics you discussed but medical care, the feminization of America and the overall war on men. If a man travels to not only Asia, but Africa and/or South America he will immediately notice the difference compared to what he faces in America.

Crime is out of control everywhere here specially in the East and West coasts. A lot of people here are on the edge it seems like not to mention the illegals crossing the border that includes drug cartels. God help us!
As a fellow Democrat Mike, I can assure you that your sentiments are well founded. It is doubly legitimate as an African American retired doctor. Additionally, as a resident of Las Vegas, I can relate. Interestingly enough, I am married to a Filipina and have been for almost 35 years(4 daughters). She’s the absolute best thing that happened to me. We met while I was a surgery resident and she, a nurse. We have homes in the Philippines and have had a couple of businesses there for many years. I’m so looking forward to getting back there when we get my significant medical conditions addressed. I can only hope to be there before this year ends. And as I always say, “go confidently in the direction of your dreams and live the life you’ve imagined. Seems like you’re doing just that!!

Lived in Vegas for 17 yrs. My husband died of cancer in 2019. Life is not the same without him so I decided to go back to PI. From Manila where I grew up I moved to southside of Luzon to live simple life and away from traffic, pollution and be able to grow vegetables. I learned everything from google. I am now in my senior year and enjoying gardening and taking care of my pets, dogs, rabbits, chickens. We don't eat out so often and prefer homecook. Just taking care of your health and you'll be okay in the Philippines. Thank you Mike for choosing Philippines as retirement place. Take good care and God bless.

Thanks God for my answered prayer. I was new here after got my spouse visa last Oct 2022, after our 4 years LDR and came here at Virginia to stayed with my husband. I just 5 months only here, but wanna go back to Hong Kong or Philippines. One of my fear is driving a car. I really don't want to drive, but don't have choice must be learn how to drive, otherwise you will stuck up at home while my hubby at work. Very difficult the culture here than Philippines. Plus, mostly people are races which isn't good. More discrimination too. Based on my experienced for few months here to my job at Day Care. Mostly, Black people and Hispanic. My husband and I are planning also to move out from here to Philippines, after our retirement. By God's grace and mercy. Everything's in God's control. God bless Us all!

Your right Mike. I grew up on the South side of Chicago. When I left to move to Florida there were over a thousand murders a year. My apartment had been broken into 3 times. I had been beaten and left for dead. Been stabbed in the lung, shot at. Had seen 2 of my friends shot and killed in front of my face. Now here in Florida the cost of living has probably tripled or quadrupled. Florida used to be one of the cheapest places to live. Now it's hard just to feed a family of 4. Hurricanes hit all the time. I was out of work most of November because Of Ian and Nicole. Crime is thru the roof and I can't protect myself because I am an Ex-con. I plan to leave here soon as I turn 62. Gonna leave my Filipina wife here and go live my last days on the beach and hiking mountain trails..

I'm currently living in the Philippines and got married 2019, before the pandemic. I intended to return to the States and eventually my wife would follow. The pandemic changed that... I'm still here with my wife and want to stay for all of the reasons you listed. 😊

My husband an Ex British army who really love my country, Phils. He finds people here very happy and friendly. Everyone called him my friend even if they dont really know each other. A simple waive and hi makes him very happy. At first its hard to keep up with all our finances specially when the pandemic really hits us hard. But yeah, giving up isnt an option. Our little business is taking off now. So yeah, at first its really hard but we work it out together.

I left my country, the Philippines, when I was 26 years old to work abroad. Last year of October, I went home for a vacation and until now, I am still here. I guess, I am loving it. This is the longest vacation I had. My last vacation was year 2019.
Going back to respect, I have this fear of traveling around in Manila as I am not used to ride in Jeepneys or MRT/LRT. I was surprised when taking an LRT, younger guys would stood up for me to take their place. I got shocked. It happened to me every time I will ride a train. Since, I’ve been away from my country for a long period of time, people would changed. I never thought that they would call me “Nay” (mother) just because I have salt and pepper hair ( in which I don’t mind). And one more thing, whenever I asked for direction, people are very helpful and accommodating. I grew up in this kind of environment and I thank God that it hasn’t changed. The respect is still there even if I go to the bank and malls.

@@mikesphilippineretirement by the way I live in Manila. We don’t call our friends/ classmates parents by their names. We called them Nanay (mother), Tatay (father) or Auntie’s or Uncle. Even strangers as long as they’re look older or Ate (big sister) or Kuya (big brother). We still blessed by taking the hand of the elders and put on the forehead instead of kissing by the check as a sign of respect.

Most of the reasons I left America are similar to you except I am a conservative living in Massachusetts and not friendly to my political beliefs. I could go on and on about that but I won't here. I have had a LDR of 10 years with filipina. Made few trips to spend vacations with her. By 2020 I was ready for retirement and when covid hit I decided to retire earlier. I had originally planned to retire in October 2020 when I turned 65. Of course the lockdown destroyed my plans so by September last year got rid of all my personal stuff and jumped on plane. Philippines has some challenges but I'm living here now and enjoying life.

Thanks Mike, it’s helpful to break down the main reasons into five categories and do a comparison with life in the United States point by point so we all can make the same comparisons with more accuracy and clarity. I am 62 so relate pretty closely to these points. Am in Indiana so same climate as OH- yeah freezing weather for half the year no fun. and still get some 100 degree days even here in summer.

I’m currently stationed in Japan and my fiancée is in the Philippines. I have to go back to the U.S. to be a military recruiter for 3 years. I’m working on a k-1 visa for me and my fiancée. I intend on coming back to Japan after my time on recruiting is done.

Impressive video. Glad you made a wise decision. Me and my asawa enjoy it here for several years. Travel to the states together annually once a year. America is failing with severe inflation, homelessness and more working class folks going into poverty every day. It will be interesting to see if mass migration happens here from America.

The reason why for me to go is, of course, financial. I see people who retired 10 years before me living like hermits making the hard choices. My first wife was half Filipina but born and raised in the States. Her father was from the philippines and was a very good guy . I do have a girl I'm talking to, and I did two trips last year for 30 days at a time looking in different places to see if I could find a place to stay. Needs and budget will have a huge bearing on where you end up being. Health care is important as we get older and being able to adjust your budget for it will be necessary and don't forget if you have a wife or girlfriend she will be getting older to and need more attention. We here in the States live just above the poverty line, and in the philippines, we are middle to upper middle class. Keep as many people as you can out of your pockets for dependents as she may want to move her parents or siblings in with you so keeping your living space cozy will not only save you money in rent but a/c cost as well . Do your research and stay away from the click bait bloggers and utilize the information blogs as they will give you the best options for your budget. Listing is the best way to be successful, and finding the right location and then a good woman will make life enjoyable.

I live in the Phoenix area, will be 67 next month. it's the same here what you said. The United States has become a very violent expensive place to live.
The homeless situation is getting worse, it already was bad, but now there are homeless people living in tents everywhere in the city.
they are at almost every intersection with their signs asking for money.
and I think the situation is going to get worse.
You made the right choice to leave and go live in the Philippines and be happy.

Thank you so much for the appreciation of our culture as Filipinos. You’re absolutely right saying that Filipinos are so respectful most especially to individuals who are older ones. Filipinos are very hospitable most especially if you’re a foreigner and that everyone are so friendly.
The only problem in our country is no other than that of individuals who are serving the government that some of them are not doing their job but letting themselves corrupt using their positions to take advantage.
And from those sufferings for more than decades, we hope that those unsignificance that our nation’s been sufferings will now change expecting to have it due to new administration.

Hope you won’t be a repeat of a happy go lucky expat who wen’t to the Philippines with 30k in his pocket met a sweet Filipina got her pregnant with twin beautiful baby girls. His 30k didn’t even last a year or so. Penniless and living on the street. Expats have to help him to fly back in U.S. to get a job while waiting for his pension coming in 1 and a half year.
It was a good reminder why I came. I've had a few glitches here but overall it's been pretty good and thanks for reminders Me

Before you decide to retire in the Philippines, be sure you have enough money to pay for your medical expenses. Medicare will cover only emergency expenses. They won't pay directly to the hospital the Philippines. You have to keep all the receipts and send all the receipts to Medicare for reimbursements. Regular medical expenses won't be paid by Medicare or any private medical insurance . It's cheaper to retire in the Philippines if you're health is not compromised.

You mentioned few issues such as lack of isolation and amenities. This is because the Visayas areas consists of many islands. Some Islands to this days may still not be reach with any type of transportations. In the Luzon however, from Central Luzon all the way to the Northern Luzon. You basically can go anywhere with any 2, 4 wheel vehicles. Status of people there are so much better than most in Visaya islands. All in all, Philippines is a great place to retire. I don’t have to mention the hospitality of Filipinos. Many already knows about the culture. ❤️ Mindanao is different story, beautiful landscapes and its people everyone love too.

Filipinos are loving friendly caring and most of them are honest. They have great respect to old pll bcoz they believe in karma. They want to be cared and loved when they get old. Even if they have little they will offer everything to you😊😊😊

Thank you for your video. The reasons you mentioned about leaving the US fit me very well. Unfriendly and rude seem to describe the culture in the US. It's more than concern for one's self. It's more of I am the only person, so get out of my way. I even had people run away from me if I greeted them! Unsafe in the US is almost an understatement. Already in this year there have been 38 mass killings. In California alone in the last 3 days 25 people have died in mass shootings. Some people have been shot "accidently", that is, they weren't part of the target. Drive-by shootings seem to be the norm in many cities.
The friendliness of the people in the Philippines was very attractive for me. I visited the Philippines in 1976 and returned here in 2011. Also I knew people in the Philippines before I returned. Cost of living - in US, California, I had a 1- bedroom apartment for $1,200 per month. Here I have a 2- bedroom bungalow for less than $300 per month. I live in Northern Luzon and the only thing about here is there aren't many expats, but maybe that is good. I don't know. Some of the foreigners from the US which I have encountered seem to be stuck with the self-centered attitude. Where i live the friendliest non- Filipino is a man from Norway, who is married to a nice Filipina. My biggest challenge has been to become aclimatised to the humidity. I sometimes feel as if I'm breathing water. But the tropical weather mostly isn't bad. I am an Arizona-born, where, like Vegas, it's dry. But dry heat is just as hot as wet!
And the language, that is, the use of English, makes things easier. English is actually the official legal language in the Philippines due to so many different dialects. Makes it easy when I need to file documents and get items notarized. In the middle part of the country, like where you are living, is where the Spanish seemed to settle. The Spanish architecture is truly beautiful and the Filipinos have made it their own.
I think that the cost of living has changed significantly. Most of the increase is, for me, the price-gouging of the oil companies. Transportation of food to the public markets (pelengke) is more expensive. So the vendors need to charge more to cover their costs. Still food is less expensive and local than in the US. I always knew that inporting food was going to cost more. And now there are food items a person couldn't buy even if they paid a small fortune. Items must aren't there.

Hey Mike, that is very well put, while the economics of retiring plays a large part in our decisions I would also add the adventure and leaving the stress behind as with being around like-minded people in terms of age and experiences. So why not leave the US the clock is still ticking my thought is to get out there and live the latter chapter and enjoy yourself.

I'm pretty much an introvert if left to my own devices. However I tend to end up in extroverted positions of employment. I'm 60 and people used to challenge me constantly because of my introverted style but once I challenge them on what they're saying I rarely get challenged again and for the most part I'm respected/feared and people are friendly towards because they don't want tobe on the wrong end of a conversation with me. That's how America is now. You have to be brutal or people think you're weak and try to take advantage of you. I really enjoy the social aspect of the Philippines which America is sorely lacking. I figure to end up in se Asia or South America when I stop grinding here in the US. Sorry to hear you're a democrat.

I want to retire in the Philippines but my husband is not too cooperative with the idea. I'm Filipina and he is Caucasian. Well, he can stay behind, I will see him every 6 months thereafter.
Respecting Older people is very important. English speaking also is a great reason to live in the Philippines.

Hi, it's nice you've chose Philippines as retirement place. You are very much welcome here. Although anywhere you cannot find a perfect place but we filipinos are confident that it is much better here. This is not to brag but most filipinos are nice to foreigners especially americans. Since americans and filipinos used to be partners in the past since pre-world war II and onwards. Just feel free and safe here but sometimes be aware, telling you frankly, there a few filipinos that are opportunists. But generally, we are fun loving and easy to go with, helpful and couteous.
