I had my daughter record every peso that was spent during 1 month in the philippines. I work too support my family in the uk. Anyway when she sent me the list of items and the overall budget I was shocked but the list was just common day spending. Fresh food being the expensive items. So even for families its hard. There are only 2 people in our house. Luckily we own it so no cost there. As I planning to go home to PH this year I have been doing my plan and I have changed it numerous times. There is never a right amount it all depends on your own circumstances. 1 month is never the same as the next. Like Mike says try too save each month. If you budget say P25000 a month and then spend only P23000 save the other P2000. Always over estimate as no one knows unforseen issues. Costs are going up all over the world so increases will just happen overnight. Just be wise.
Hi Mike. I’m from the Philippines and being of senior age I know how life is there in my country. I finished watching this episode. It’s Very detailed. And you are very organized. It will surely help others who are planning or thinking about settling there. I wish you and Janet the best of everything. You are very right. She takes care of you you take care of her too. It’s very sad when a foreigner thinks he is supporting financially and treats his partner like a housemaid.
This is the type of video I'll listen to again and again while I'm waiting for my turn (July 2023). It triggers thoughts of things I need to plan for, buy or not buy in order to customize my successful retirement. I also like that 29 minute video put out by Mike and Justin over at Philippine Info.... Thanks for your effort it's well appreciated.
Originally we planned to retire in the Philippines. After retiring we went 3 times to different places where we thought we possibly want to retire. It’s gotten more expensive for sure. Our main issue is healthcare, then getting around is not easy. Davao was our first choice but after spending time there, it became frustrating because of the dialect that I don’t understand. The other thing is the expectation that since you are foreigner you have money to give away. We even look at some properties to buy and the prices are shocking.
The land and house prices are very expensive due to used of business to most of filipinos, especially close by the big city , but we bought our lot/land not too expensive in Pinamungajan, Southern Cebu, 2hrs driving from Pinamungajan to Cebu city.
@@FilAmSerlCoupleVlog hey neighbor hehehe, my wife and I did the same thing, our biggest mistake was we bought land and built a house while still in Hawaii, just because it was close to my wife's sisters and family, but when we first arrived here in aloguinsan, we both know we made a huge mistake. Our barangay is crowded, noisy at night ( karaoke, etc) and much too far from Cebu. So while we wait for our all of the paperwork to be finalized ( long story) we just bide our time until we are able to sell this place, and find a place we want to be. And if we can't find a buyer in a reasonable amount of time, we'll just go back to the US and start over. I hope you're enjoying your home in Ptown 😁
I've been retired in Cebu City going on 3 years and the information you put in this video is very good advice. Most people don't plan to fail but fail to plan. If you come here without a plan and fail, don't use me or others as part of your retirement plan. Thanks for the info and advice. Very good video.
Awesome video, direct and serious and no bs! I really enjoyed it. I'm a disabled vet in my 40's and ive been watching alot of these in considering a future forever home where I can be independant and have a decent quality of life on my VA disability. This is exactly the kind of info i was looking for!
Very sage advice. Thanks for putting this together to remind us of the necessity of planning for the smaller things that we tend to forget when moving to a new country.
I watched the whole video. Sounds like very good advice not to be taken lightly. I feel horrible thinking about people standing you up like that Mike. I’m sorry they did that to ya man. I appreciate all your videos. What you do matters.
I agree Mike just know that all you do is not in vain we are out here and we are benefitting so much from everything you share your wisdom and knowledge is much appreciated
Great video. Let me add, if you embrace a minimalist lifestyle it makes things simpler Try to buy pans and knives that can be used for multiple purposes. Get bowls that can be used for cereal, soup and snacks all in one. Try to minimize how many plates, cups and glasses you need. And have paper cups and plates on hand. When I downsized i couldnt believe how much excess glasses and silvaware i had ..donated it it all . Thanks again ❤
I have planned to come to the Philippines to retire and find a good Filipina! But after watching your video and puts things financially more into perspective! Cuz if you're coming there to relax and retire I truly believe you need at least $2,000 a month and $10,000 to start up. And the saying that after listening to you at least $5,000 as emergency fund! I appreciate all the work you put into this but you actually made everything more in a proper perspective! And I thank you sir because I would want to be more relaxed knowing everything is covered and have that emergency fund! God bless you
@Mike's Philippine Retirement that's very doable Mike i think .. even with your 'dependants' so i guess i have to take back my earlier comment lol .. which area are you located in the philippines? i gotta catch up on your videos yet
There’s too much bad information on you tube about living cheap in PI. This video is spot on it’s not as cheap as people think. The prices rise faster where there are a lot of foreigners and will continue to as more foreigners arrive in duma. Hope this video will open some eyes before making the big move.
I’ve been watching videos about living in the PI for a few months now. I lived there for 3 years, came back to the the US in 2016. I retired in 2013 and loved it over there. You gave some very sound straight forward advice. If I return I will live alone. That just works better for me. I watched the whole video, I even share em with a couple friends I have still living over there. Thanks for sharing. I’m a new subscriber.
Sorry for the many comments but I got to tell you that you nailed so so many topics relating to the all mighty dollar. Loved it and will use it as a reference even being a seasoned traveler it’s words of wisdom that you need to understand fully. Thanks ☺️ 🙏🏻
Hi Mike. Been following you for a while now. Can only say that you are incredibly good at informing. I come from Sweden, but you explain calmly and methodically. I was actually upset when you told about those who don't value your time. I don't understand how some people think. Having said that, I want to thank you for a very good channel. Regards Martin
My budget is right 1500 and I own my 300,000 home and cars and toys I have been all through east Asia and I still don’t think any amount of money keeps you safe however the key is access and never talking to anyone about your income or your asset. Finding a girlfriend who is at least in her 30 to help and enjoy her company and just start your adventure
Mike, this is great advice but honestly, it applies everywhere not just the Philippines. If you were moving to any new city in the US you need the same advice. I think it might be the case that retirees have forgotten advice they likely gave to their kids decades ago.
I have lived here for a little over 2 years añd my girlfriend has told me to do almost exactly what you are saying, you are right on the spot. Thanks for your input
Hi Mike... I am a new subscriber to your channel and have watched a few of your videos. This one here is very important info for anyone wanting to move to the Philippines. Great work. I am from Canada and had spend a few weeks in the Cebu area before the covid. Now that I am retired , I am really thinking a lot about moving there.
Many dont think of start up money my fiance has a 16 yr old daughter her school $40 a month not optional to finish high school they need a decent cell phone for school research etc In general the cost to provide for 2 people not cheap not in states nor there .
Good on you Mike and Janet looks like you have a good marriage I've been to the p.i's 7 times in the 80's I got married to a filipina but she took me for a ride oh well better luck next time I'm here in Sydney Oz I'd love to be back over there last time was 88 🙂
Hi Mike & Janet♥I'm 64 from America & planning to move there too. I don't work I'm on Disability so I receive about $2,000 a month and I feel strongly about moving there. I've been into the country, attractions and People for a long time. I was even scammed by a Woman, only once, but I'm much more picky to who I talk too. Now I've already been talking to a Filipino Woman, called Sizzy Kelly on her Vlog, and I think she's a special Woman and I'm planning a trip to the Philippines to meet her and get acquainted🤞
Yep, its all about planning for the first few months in country. A month before we flew, we had my wife's niece go look at a few places and make complete videos outside and of every room inside. Once she found exactly what we were looking for, we told her to let the landlord know and to give her all the deposit money (once we sent it). Some people may not do that, but my wife's family would never let us get messed over and we did not sign the lease until we had been here for 2 months just to make sure things did not crumble. Our initial budget was $120,000 for the first 6 months. We flew with a little over $30,000 for the 1st two months' purchases and then started transferring another $80,000 along with my 1/2 military retirement and 1/2 of my VA disability, so that we can go look for land a few cities away. Every single thing you mentioned, we bought during the first two weeks, lol. Her family did not understand why we were constantly shopping... We bought an Etrike for local running around and a MPV for longer distances and bigger grocery days. I explained to them that it was about comfort and functionality. Very good breakdown of the needs/wants during the first few months. Absolutely great break down and realistic considerations that everyone should consider. A while ago I asked Black Filipino for some information and he offered a paid consultation. I did not understand why he could not just answer a question via email (still don't understand charging for an email response). But with you waking up for phone calls, it is more personal as you are giving up your sleep. Yep, I completely understand you charging. If they are going to cause you to get up based on their time, they may as well put something in it to lose when setting up the phone call appointment.
This was very sobering and practical about the reality of moving. I did have questions about transportation can us expat buy cars or finance a car. If I don't know how to ride a motorcycle, what are other options to move all the things I buy?
Thanks Mike, that is a true dose of reality that people need to hear. There are so many things in life I wish someone had told me about long ago. Like SS is based on your last or highest 30 years of income. I was out of work for 5 years before receiving SS.
Hi Mike 😊 On my last trip to Dumagete i got to meet Paul and Mae at Tom Toms. I wish the best of luck to Paul on his medical stuff. He is funny and very well spoken. Get better soon old dog wish you speedy recovery. From your crazy people.
You really did the best advice for some foreigners who like to live in the Philippines. And I also agree that you ask for 25$ for personal advices because they are taking part of your private time and knowledge. So for me it is fair enough if they pay for your advices !.
Very informative retirement plan and well explained . Everything should be planned out before settling here in the PH because you need to adjust when you arrived here. Thank you for your video💗
Thanks, always good to go over the basics and common sense stuff. I'm working on my savings before I get there to have enough to hold me 2 or 3 years before other benefits kick in. That startup fund is secure but now have a better idea of were I want that startup to be. I know that guys story in the other video sad but yeah way underestimated what he needed and also wasted a lot on the wrong reasons which jammed him up alot sooner.
Good video for older expats. After living in South Korea for 3 years, I find the older folks have a significantly harder time adapting to a new lifestyle. I tell friends who’ve thought about living overseas, it is a huge lifestyle change from living in the US. Us, 39/40yo guys have a much easier time as we are a little flexible and tend to be a little more resilient.
im 58 and have lived in South Korea for the past 14 years and Japan for 4 years previous to that .. i go to the philippines 4 months of the year .. of course i am an exception .. but i do agree with you .. the older one gets the harder it is to change .. that's just natural .. it's why older guys making the 'big move' are to be commended.
Hi Mike. Great video as always, well done. I also wanted to comment on yoir video about online Trolls and people or viewers making unkind or derogatory comments about you and others. Unfortunately I wasn't able to leave a personal message myself so here it is. I think that the channel you and Janet have created is worthy of congratulations. Yours ismy favorite channel in the Philippines by far. I enjoy the content, Your delivery and your informative informative advice. Personally I think that the people who leave unpleasant or insensitive comments are just sad individuals who have either no talent themselves or who are plain rude and haven't anything else useful to do in their lives. I think yoi do a great job, seem a truly decent and mature person and enjoying the life that you are living in yoir retirement. Your deserve happiness, success in rhe channel and good health and loving being with Janet and sharing experiences with her family and your friends friends. Best wishes to you too. Stay well and enjoy your future lives together.
This video is full of realism. I have not been to the Philippines but I have been to East Malaysia twice. You analysis of financial needs is by far the best I have seen on TH-cam. Thank you very much.
All you said is 100% true. I will add, always make sure that you can show the bills for what you have paid for in advance, and make sure to have a copy of the bills. It is not enough to have a copy of your driver's license to show the officer who someday might stop you in traffic. But no matter what, it is always good to have copies of everything important.
Mike, your videos are incredibly helpful. Just the basic things we future expats need to know in detail. This is one of those I need to watch over and over. I take notes too, but tend to misplace my yellow sticky notes. haha! Thanks so much for the valuable info.
From the other channels the general consensus is to buy water for cooking, drinking, brushing teeth, etc. I was in Manila and heated up drinking water in the kettle one time. Imagine my surprise when my eyes flew open at 3am at the same time beating feet to the cr 👀🤣
Hi Mike. You get a “like” on this video, well earned. Most people on you tube tell us ‘would be’ expats that its cheap, very cheap to live in the Philippines. They consider it sport to report a lower costs than other you tubers.
Hi Mike, I just watched your video! It was worth it very much the time to see the pros and cons of such a move. There is a big difference and you are so right. It does open the eyes to those facts that most people don't think about. It was education as well about the healthcare system and what it can cost you there. Also, credit cards and the banking system. Plus lifestyles and more. Great and important information before that big journey.
This is my second video of yours and I am so impressed and calmed. I felt rather paranoid about all my worries and while listening to you I felt like my pop was back and telling me things about life I hadnt considered yet. I mean I had many worries and you added 3 big points. Proof that I am still too "young" and dependent. Thank you, sir! I hope my insurences will be paused during my extended stays. I only had two ways to transfer money and only one of them garantueed good conditions for foreign activities. Renting out my appartment. To be honest I thought about giving it to a friend I trust but its smarter to charge a minor rent from him. Everything helps during my first few visits on the Philippines. I love how you stress out the point about the emergency cases. A part of me thinks "that wont happen to me because I am pretty relaxed about most things" but I am sure that they will be a big surprise in it for me. Biggest point to me was the equipment in the houses/ airbnb. Never crossed my mind that I would have to watch out for absolutely unfurnished appartments.
Listened to it all, real great! Im 38 and will do my first trip i a few weeks. I really do a lot of digging into everything already, like how they are like, how to be street-smart, scams to avoid and such. I have no plans at all to move there but this video was also interesting.
Liked your vlog today and thought it was spot on with everything you said! My impression is that we seem to have similar ideas as to what is required and are expected in order to move to the Philippines. I have worked in and out of countries for close to 50 years so I have developed an instinctively sense of what needs to be done before moving overseas full time. I pegged our (wife included) startup fund at roughly $10,000 USD to get started with the access to utilize additional funds. As human nature would have it, some people can not resist the temptation to want to push the envelope on cost or another words how much can I squeeze by on. 👍
@@scottbaird5674 I started working offshore in 1970 at the age of 20 and I retired from offshore work in 2018 at the age of 68. I worked on ships in looking for oil in the marine seismograph industry for 48 years and worked offshore in 60 countries during my working stint. I did not begin to draw my social security until 2016 when I reached the age of 66 and I am so glad I waited! 👍
Wow Mike, you really put a lot of work into this. Thanks for doing this. We have a smaller version of our house in Southern Leyte that we plan to convert into an Airbnb when we move back and since we plan to have it fully furnished, all these things you mentioned are a big help. I'm taking notes as I am listening to you :) Thanks a bunch.

Watched this video, start to finish, most informative video I've seen this for as I prepare to retire in 2yrs. I've got a little time, so I hope there will be future updates.
Mike, thank you for your videos. I enjoy all of your detailed information. Alot of these things, I'm sure, most of us have thought of already, but hearing it straight from the source makes it more tangible for us. From a future, Expat, from Los Angeles, California, USA 🇺🇸 who already has a wife in the Philippines......THANK YOU!!! GOD BLESS !!!
Retired expat from the US living in Thailand for five years. I met my GF online. We talked every day for four months before i came over. We hit it off immediately, been together ever since and we're getting married next month. We got a one bedroom home initially. Rent cheap, approx $200/month. Furnished. We eat out most every day, Lotta travel. We were jn Phuket for four years. Then came baCk to her hometown of Trang. Dhe has a house here. Laid back, nice Thai people. Great place to stage road trips in Central and South Tland. All good!! Every day an adventure!!
Great advice. Just listen to bloggers who came to the philippines with little money. Either they had real problems or were dead lucky too survive while some no doubt had to go home. So planning is the key.
Wow you have opened my eyes to so much I was that guy thinking I got 1500/month I can live there but you brought out so much that we don't consider the situations that most don't prepare for. Thank you Mike very informative.
Hi Mike and Janet! Mike, thank you isn't enough for all that you do for us that want or are planning to go to the Philippines to live!!!! This isn't like moving to Toledo from Cleveland!!!! You're the BEST!!! Everyone better believe everything that you said. Thank you for the awesome amount of time you put into this!! Going out an finding and showing us the houses or apartments that are being up for rent to give us a idea of what we can get so we can figure out what we can afford!!!! THE TIME YOU SPEND ON SHOWING US AND ALL THE GREAT INFORMATION IS........! The butt head's, that's putting it as nice as I can, that don't answer or call you when you set up a time is awful, just awful!!!!!! Man I can't believe I'm not describing them in my normal way of talking!!!!! Mike, I watch your videos because I really like them!!! You are a good Man!!!! Thanks 👍👍
Good point you make on "food poison." We tend to think we get it only from a dumpy restaurant. I only got it once in my life and it was from a well known French restaurant. Always carry 'activated charcoal.'
Great video Mike. I’m moving there in September. I’m bringing $5,000 in cash with access to another $5,000 that will be in the bank plus I will have a credit card. On top of that I will be bringing in $2,400 a month. I’m hoping that once I get settled in there that I can save $500 to $800 a month. I definitely won’t be getting a girlfriend until after I have lived there at least a year. If I do end up with a girlfriend she will be an orphan without children 😂😂😂.
It's good that you told it like it is! Good 👍 and informative video! Individual's need a reality check if they're thinking 🤔 about moving here. Not everyone will have TriCare, or the use of the FMP (Foreign Medical Program), it's really a thing that you a valid point of having no safety net here, you must be your own safety net! God bless!
Hey Mike, it's good to reiterate all of this information it's always a good reminder, the John story with Old Dog if that's what you're referring to has been beaten to death, but it is a good lesson for people that aren't familiar with the story. I'll connect with you when I arrive I'm getting down to the last months, good video.
@@mikesphilippineretirement He was too gullible iin trusting the family as far as his investments into the home/truck. The way they treated him after things didn't work out along with the young lady having twins in relation to the family is a reflection of how some people can be. Besides of all of that his initial plan of living off a small amount of money over a few years way before he would be eligible to receive his SS was a bad idea from the beginning.
I’ve lived here for almost 15 years. ❤ Your video is right to the points for someone new. Money was never an issue because we learned to save in our younger years. Being married to a Filipino, things are much easier than being single or alone. We built a 5br, 5b, 3 story home - all paid off in cash. Even with our home paid off, we still budget $2000 a month to enjoy life. But one question, why always talk about the key locations for expats ? There’s less costly locations to live & better than many of the key locations. Why no one has a video on this is weird 😂. Just a block away from me, $100, 2BR, 1bath, small kitchen & living room. Month to month. There’s many places just like this. Location is everything 💞 subscribed 😂
I think paying cash is the best move (if you can) or save until you reach a level where you can. I wouldn’t mortgage in the Philippines due to high interest & most won’t negotiate if you try to pay it off early. Budget is important, I recommend $2000 a month if your renting, anything less will not give you as much quality in your lifestyle 💞
Ironically, my fiancee lives in Dumaguete. We know each over for over a decade and i have visited multiple times to Dumaguete. We both have kids and mines are still in there teens phase so i won't be leaving America anytime soon. Our goal is to work out here, then we will live in her hometown of Dumaguete when we retire. It makes me nod my head in satisfaction of the breakdowns you stated. I will never forget my first airbnb rental lmao! the gas for the stove went out, not enough towels, mattresses were questionable, very squeaky furniture cabinets and doors, and the worst of the worst, strays and pest! Definitely an eye opener but you are totally right about renting before making a firm decision lol! one of my stays lasted for 25 days and was an incredible/challenging experience. I definitely adapted to the Filipino lifestyle and i am so ready to leave America for a lot of the things you said in another video (5 reasons why you left America. I am only 37 and know i have some time before retirement with my kids living here but i will 100% make sure they are in a good position in life before i leave. I hate the most that they have to live in this society thats been created out here now. Anyways, i hope when i visit back out there next year (Me and my fiancee are working on getting her fiancee visa) that we could possibly meet up and chat. I am always willing to listen to people of wisdom and learn more. Dumaguete is a small world and i don't know if i had happen to see you at the Pancake House out there this Year in early May lol! A nice property spot that me and my fiancee would love to live is the Camella homes inbetween Valencia and Dumaguete. I like uniformity, the gated community...and you know...no stray dogs. I am all for man best friend but dam, that first air bnb experience with 4 strays raiding the trashcans and chewing on our shoes outside (i got some lemon scent stuff for the porch that kept there butts away), i never want to deal with that again. i honestly know those dogs are just trying to survive and it hurts to see them in that condition they were in, but in all fairness, the rowdyness they caused in the neighborhood was enough for me to not want to deal with that. Bleh, sorry for the long rant. Take care out there as i know personally how carefree the life is.
It's a great video Mike. It's the most serious conversation I've heard on this topic, and rightly so! I've traveled to Asia from Australia for vacation, about 6 or 7 times. I always took my health and financial situation into account. I didn't think I needed as sizeable emergency fund, as your suggesting. However, I was aware of what could go wrong, and made sure I had all contingencies taken care of. I'm flabbergasted at some of the vlogger stories I find about guys traveling unprepared!
This is a very good video for someone like myself, a minimalist with some savings and SS, Who is doing their due diligence and trying to make a decision between the Philippines and Cambodia.
Hi Mike yeah I got food poisoning 4 1/2 years ago I think it was the donuts I got in Cebu airport crispy cream custard filled in the custard tasted tangy I ate the donut anyway and by the time my flight got to Manila I was throwing up for three days in my hotel room And so I went to the hospital on the fourth day and she gave me some medicine they were very good to me at the hospital by the way excellent care and I think it cost me about $100 but they ran all kinds of tests. So you’re right you do need to watch what you eat….
Your a great guy, I'm here in Cebu now, going back to America next week. I have been here about 15 times, going to stay here with in the next year and a half. No one should move here without coming here quite a few times. People have the idea that it's like a fantasy land here, but I tell everyone that it's like the US when it comes to women, you will have to look hard to find a good one. Thanks for all the information, I want to be sure I don't make any mistakes.
The cost of flights to PH is expensive, depending where you’re coming from, the time of year and how far in advance you book your flights so you need to consider that in your startup costs.
Good advice to newcomers, but unfortunately many people will ignore it, thinking they know better. I came here 4 years when I turned 50. I had already bought and furnished a house - through my wife , obviously - 2 years prior to moving permanently so I had somewhere to go on arrival and we had transport. We've since bought more property,, both commercial and residential, so we have an income that exceeds our spending and, pre-pandemic, allowed us to take frequent trips, both domestic and foreign. Medical insurance is a must and it came in handy for me last year when I had a bike crash. Retirement for me means being relaxed, enjoying myself and not worrying about money.
Hi Mike, I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your show. I learned a lot from you, not only on how to prepare yourself for such a relocation, but it also comes to mind how much is required just to live in the US in itself. I was pondering the thought of moving/relocating, but I wouldn't even have come close to the reality of such a move. Thanks so much.😅 28:5728:5728:57
Mike, you give many of us a lot to think about, and what you need to have available to move there. Many things I have planned are somewhat different, and give ma a cause to worry about, but I also feel it is my best choice to live out the rest of my life. I wish we could talk one on one. 😊😊
Thank you Mike yes you need a motor cycle to get around where you live in Philippines , we bought 2 cars , we made a 100,000 for down payment and 20,000 a month for 5 years yes get an apt wt totally furnished apt. for 35,000 a month ..
If you are a bigger guy and need like 2x sizes, it is hard to find clothes that will fit. I bought a 2x over there and it was like a large or XL. It seems like the sizes are smaller. About the only way you can get the bigger sizes is to find a place that the US ships used clothes over there. You would do good to bring your own if possible.
yes there,s so much to prepare for , im not to good with logistics and computer work and time flys by so fast . thanks for so much good advice . im looking forward to returning this june .

land prices are high right now as i think China has let its people start coming back to the Philippines
Thanks for sharing
Awesome video, direct and serious and no bs! I really enjoyed it. I'm a disabled vet in my 40's and ive been watching alot of these in considering a future forever home where I can be independant and have a decent quality of life on my VA disability. This is exactly the kind of info i was looking for!
Very sage advice. Thanks for putting this together to remind us of the necessity of planning for the smaller things that we tend to forget when moving to a new country.
Glad it was helpful!
I watched the whole video. Sounds like very good advice not to be taken lightly. I feel horrible thinking about people standing you up like that Mike. I’m sorry they did that to ya man. I appreciate all your videos. What you do matters.
Thank so much for your support
I agree Mike just know that all you do is not in vain we are out here and we are benefitting so much from everything you share your wisdom and knowledge is much appreciated
Great video.
Let me add, if you embrace a minimalist lifestyle it makes things simpler
Try to buy pans and knives that can be used for multiple purposes.
God bless you
nice to hear Gary..What city you thinking of moving to?
you can live comfortably on way less than 2000 usd a month in the philippines as a single guy .. if you're in Mike's situation then you'd need more.
@@paulthurson I am trying to live on 1700 usd we will see how it goes

There’s too much bad information on you tube about living cheap in PI. This video is spot on it’s not as cheap as people think. The prices rise faster where there are a lot of foreigners and will continue to as more foreigners arrive in duma. Hope this video will open some eyes before making the big move.

As opposed to trying to do more than exist in America!
Certainly not living!

I appreciate that!
The whole video is worth watching. And stating all facts information. This is actually what exactly how it goes when you live in the Philippines.
thanks Raymond
My budget is right 1500 and I own my 300,000 home and cars and toys I have been all through east Asia and I still don’t think any amount of money keeps you safe however the key is access and never talking to anyone about your income or your asset. Finding a girlfriend who is at least in her 30 to help and enjoy her company and just start your adventure
good advice
Mike, this is great advice but honestly, it applies everywhere not just the Philippines. If you were moving to any new city in the US you need the same advice. I think it might be the case that retirees have forgotten advice they likely gave to their kids decades ago.
I have lived here for a little over 2 years añd my girlfriend has told me to do almost exactly what you are saying, you are right on the spot. Thanks for your input
Hi Mike... I am a new subscriber to your channel and have watched a few of your videos. This one here is very important info for anyone wanting to move to the Philippines. Great work. Good on you Mike and Janet looks like you have a good marriage I've been to the p.i's 7 times in the 80's I got married to a filipina but she took me for a ride oh well better luck next time I'm here in Sydney Oz I'd love to be back over there last time was 88 🙂
Do us dvd or blu rays movies or players work? Are the electronic out let's the same it it region 1?
do not know
Hi Mike & Janet♥I'm 64 from America & planning to move there too.
No woman is that special; they are all the same, you just have to find one that fit you. You are too old to be a simp!
best of luck Timothy
If they are going to cause you to get up based on their time, they may as well put something in it to lose when setting up the phone call appointment.
send an e mail with a question or 2 is no problem...but a video call you can do follow up questions and completely understand answer...
@@mikesphilippineretirement yes charge them. Nothing wrong with that if they not respect your time.

Us, 39/40yo guys have a much easier time as we are a little flexible and tend to be a little more resilient.
thanks for sharing my friend
im 58 and have lived in South Korea for the past 14 years and Japan for 4 years previous to that .. i go to the philippines 4 months of the year .. of course i am an exception .. but i do agree with you .. the older one gets the harder it is to change .. that's just natural .. it's why older guys making the 'big move' are to be commended.

Good info Mike. Maybe the best I've ever heard regarding the budget in the Philippines.
Glad you enjoyed it
All you said is 100% true. I will add, always make sure that you can show the bills for what you have paid for in advance, and make sure to have a copy of the bills. It is not enough to have a copy of your driver's license to show the officer who someday might stop you in traffic. But no matter what, it is always good to have copies of everything important.
I believe everyone really appreciates the time you invest in trying to help people, so thank you. 👍🏻
So nice of you

Do you buy water for cooking or use the regular water for cooking
From the other channels the general consensus is to buy water for cooking, drinking, brushing teeth, etc. I was in Manila and heated up drinking water in the kettle one time. Imagine my surprise when my eyes flew open at 3am at the same time beating feet to the cr 👀🤣
we buy drinking water and use it for cooking
Hi Mike. You get a “like” on this video, well earned. Most people on you tube tell us ‘would be’ expats that its cheap, very cheap to live in the Philippines. They consider it sport to report a lower costs than other you tubers.
Thank you Andrew just showing what I see and feel
Outstanding down to earth video. Heres hoping that your sound advice is taken to heart. Thanks Mike.
Wrlcome!
Thanks for sharing!
Never crossed my mind that I would have to watch out for absolutely unfurnished appartments.
thank you for your comment
Listened to it all, real great! Im 38 and will do my first trip i a few weeks. I really do a lot of digging into everything already, like how they are like, how to be street-smart, scams to avoid and such.
I have no plans at all to move there but this video was also interesting.
Have fun! thanks for sharing
I wonder what volt is the electricity in ph and what kind of plugs
Liked your vlog today and thought it was spot on with everything you said! My impression is that we seem to have similar ideas as to what is required and are expected in order to move to the Philippines. I have worked in and out of countries for close to 50 years so I have developed an instinctively sense of what needs to be done before moving overseas full time. I pegged our (wife included) startup fund at roughly $10,000 USD to get started with the access to utilize additional funds. As human nature would have it, some people can not resist the temptation to want to push the envelope on cost or another words how much can I squeeze by on. 👍
thank you for sharing and thank you so much for your support...You seem to have it planned out...
How old were you when you retired?
@@scottbaird5674 I started working offshore in 1970 at the age of 20 and I retired from offshore work in 2018 at the age of 68. If I do end up with a girlfriend she will be an orphan without children 😂😂😂.

with almost 3/4 of a million views most have seem it..my take is not him but what he did and how bad I think it was as a man
@@mikesphilippineretirement He was too gullible iin trusting the family as far as his investments into the home/truck.
Thanks for your comments any ideas my budget on ss in medium would like to keep savings savings two br with air in one would be nice
Vlogers should tell the truth. Thank you for your honesty. I really like your Chanel. They are very useful.👍
I appreciate that!

The cost of flights to PH is expensive, depending where you’re coming from, the time of year and how far in advance you book your flights so you need to consider that in your startup costs.
Great advice Mike I appreciate your time and effort, latter part of 2024 is my plan to come to the Philippines.
Best of luck my friend
Good advice to newcomers, but unfortunately many people will ignore it, thinking they know better. I came here 4 years when I turned 50. I had already bought and furnished a house - through my wife , obviously - 2 years prior to moving permanently so I had somewhere to go on arrival and we had transport. We've since bought more property,, both commercial and residential, so we have an income that exceeds our spending and, pre-pandemic, allowed us to take frequent trips, both domestic and foreign. Medical insurance is a must and it came in handy for me last year when I had a bike crash. Retirement for me means being relaxed, enjoying myself and not worrying about money.
good advice also on health Insurance
So none of that property you bought is in your name.
@@eugeniasyro5774 The property is in trust for the kids but they can't touch it without our permission.

Hi Mike, I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your show. I learned a lot from you, not only on how to prepare yourself for such a relocation, but it also comes to mind how much is required just to live in the US in itself. I was pondering the thought of moving/relocating, but I wouldn't even have come close to the reality of such
a move. Thanks so much.😅 28:57 28:57 28:57
Great to hear!
Mike, you give many of us a lot to think about, and what you need to have available to move there. Many things I have planned are somewhat different, and give ma a cause to worry about, but I also feel it is my best choice to live out the rest of my life. I wish we could talk one on one. 😊😊
Thank you Mike yes you need a motor cycle to get around where you live in Philippines , we bought 2 cars , we made a 100,000 for down payment and 20,000
a month for 5 years yes get an apt wt totally furnished apt. for 35,000 a month ..
Thanks Mike!
Many things people wouldn't think about!!
welcome!
Giving it the real talk brother 🙌Laying out, you are right on point 💯
I appreciate that!
I totally agree with you about kitchen appliances they save you a lot of money in the long ran....
yes they do Janet enjoys cooking
If you are a bigger guy and need like 2x sizes, it is hard to find clothes that will fit. I bought a 2x over there and it was like a large or XL. It seems like the sizes are smaller. About the only way you can get the bigger sizes is to find a place that the US ships used clothes over there. You would do good to bring your own if possible.
good advise
I am just binge watching here. Love your channel.
