3x LEGO City Bridges IMPROVED!

  • In this video, I rip apart 3 bridges in the LEGO city and make them BETTER! Not too long ago I made an archway under the train/boardwalk/road that connected the ocean to the canal... today I rebuilt them! Now all three bridges go up 6 bricks and the arches span 14 studs rather than 8 rather than 3. The boardwalk has a nice arched bridge that was built using cylinders and profile bricks. The train bridge has new support walls that cover the grade. The road had an increase in grade/length, a new sidewalk, and a bike lane. Another exciting day in the LEGO city!

    Don’t be upset by any comments suggesting other things you could have done. I think there’s some great suggestions here about drawbridges and there’s various types that you could build if you want to. Seeing the progress is great and it’s all content for TH-cam when you have to rebuild/improve things! You have plenty to work on and if you finish the whole city too quickly you’ll just have to move to an even bigger place. Take your time and build what you enjoy. We’re enjoying being along for the ride, thanks.

      I agree. The waterfront is cluttered and bland with the street, track, and boardwalk. That could be an amazing creative waterfront area by moving buildings closer to the water and free up space to design a park, trees, boardwalk. Then place canal crossing for train and the street behind the buildings.

    You are too focused on doing arches for the canal. Do some research on possibly building lift bridges similar to what can be found in many areas of the Netherlands. Those would give some character to the areas crossing over the canal. Something to consider for the future.

    It does look quite good, but in my mind most cities showed online lack the same little detail : planning for the water to be lower than the city. Not by a plate or brick but a real difference. It would require raising most/all of the city or lowering the table area beneath the water. But hey if anyone has the space and possibility to do so, it's you. It would look so awesome and you would get rid of those unrealistic inclines.
    Thanks for sharing, love most of what you post.😊

    The arch for the boardwalk is pretty exaggerated, perhaps switching it out for a tiered observation deck to connect both sides across the water would be a smoother transition. Also agree with the comments about a draw bridge or lift bridge. But it's looking amazing so far!

  • @garethbracchi
    @garethbracchi 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +24

    Some great Lego engineering here, but you might be better served operationally and aesthetically by putting in a lift bridge of some kind (it wouldn't have to function, just look like it could) The railway in particular looks very unrealistic, and even the road would be a hefty grade for a car! I'd also be worried about the increased risk of an inadvertant derailment following the train accelerating down the incline. Otherwise, the city's looking great! Keep up the good work!

    I like your second idea about inclining before the turn. If you did the full incline before the turn, yes, you’d have to elevate the turn, but you’d have so much room underneath for walkways between the city and the boardwalk. Citizens wouldn’t have to walk on or above the tracks.

  • @ErikAkers
    @ErikAkers 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +11

    Maybe consider raising the whole canal section of downtown up by a couple of bricks so that the train track doesn't require such a steep section to make it over the water, and you could more gently come up to grade on the long straight section.

    I have followed the progress of your last city and now this city for years and was excited when you announced your canal idea shortly after I visited Indianapolis, Indiana, a flat city with a canal through the downtown with kayaks and swan boats able to move along it. As someone with a grade on their train line in my Lego city, your batteries will run out faster, the steeper the grade. The larger bridges are a great addition and will adapt and progress with the city itself as you come up with and test more ideas. Make sure you enjoy building and don't get too caught up in the comments.

    I think the level of the arches was fine, however maybe it would’ve been more sufficient to physically cut the area for the ocean and canal and lower them to the desired height (5-6 bricks or so). That way the tracks, road and boardwalk aren’t raised too high above ground. It would make building the ocean and blending the beach, as well as cutting through the tables and measuring the right height, a ton do work but it would really bring your city the depth and elevation changes to new levels (literally). Food for thought of course, this still looks great!

  • @williamewen383
    @williamewen383 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    In a city, the canal is always below street level. So you are quite right to say the best way about implementing the canal would be to raise everything around it up several studs. You got plenty time to think about doing that in future.

Challenging ideas I know. Keep up the good work!

    Bridges and canal gap are looking great! As long as you're happy with how it looks that's the main thing. If you can, do try and reduce the angle of incline for the train, your batteries and motors will thank you for it. Depending on whether you're going to run the train clockwise or anti-clockwise could mean just decreasing the incline on one side.

      I mentioned in a previous video, look at how the canals workd in Utrecht the netherlands. raise the entire city bit closest to teh harbour up. add cellars under the buildings around the peep hole in the table for detail. for the footbridge at one time build a moc drawbridge like the ones in Amsterdam. make sure teh bridges have the same clearance to have canal boats teh ability to do tours or supply the cellars which are in these times mostly restaurants and clubs and art studio's.

    You should try to make a drawbridge for the train because the track kinda blocks the road and also having a draw bridge would be awesome❤

    What about widening the water and putting the train track on piers/pickings over the water - decreases slope and looks cool.

    Jordan. Love the new city
    However I have an idea for the waterway. Making the train track so difficult to get over when you add the cargo trains later on. What if you lowered everything down to about the river level with a drawbridge type system that you could put crossings in that look like a drawbridge which I think would be a little bit easier for you in the long run because pedestrian walkways over bridges you can make the bridge and the roadway and the train way all one piece does that make sense? Just have one swinging device going back and forth if need be for the boats that way future trains won't have an issue getting over the hump. However it's your city do what you want. Just an idea. Keep up the great work

    A realistic but not necessarily pretty idea - a chain link fence between the sidewalk bridge section and the railroad bridge. Snot mounted grille plates maybe?

    Make the road a drawbridge and how about making the boardwalk be steps and a landing .

    you could keep the train tracks flat and add one of those canal crossings that raises the train tracks when a boat needs to get into the canal. not sure what its called. Love the city so far.

    A big improvement with the bridges. I wonder if you could use the cove to curve around to the right (where there is currently some green plate). You could then begin to raise the train track as you suggested along the other edge and lessen the steepness over the canal itself. It could then remain the current steepness on the left hand side where you are very restricted in space.

    Looks better. If you dont want. Pedestrians on your bridge cycle lane you better add some nearby pedestrian road crossing, easy change ... Please can we have a camera shot looking under all 3 bridges?

    It's great that you unknowingly made a classic Sim City 2000 road bridge in Lego! That pedestrian bridge is amazing. It seems like a few folks (me included) thought you would build a taller brick height between canal and city. I understand that's a *huge* endeavor, so this isn't negative criticism. Take a quick break for "opposition research" and see what Brickcrafts has done with his harbor. I know the impulse to have the city "done" is strong, but we enjoy any build videos you do. Maybe see what it takes to raise up a few buildings, then do the math. I know, it sucks! But you taught me how to use Bricklink. Put in big brick orders, and build what you can for now. With love as always!

    If you make the canal half a baseplate, you would be able to get the height you want and add a promenade on each s.

    You talk about how big the canal will be but have you built 2 boats to see if they could side by side in your idea? You wanted to raise part of the city by the canal so I would do that and have the train drop down to that level after crossing the canal, also the train elevation prevents you putting away to reach to boardwalk, a fix would be to start raising round the corner and put the train on a stilted line so the people can walk under to the boardwalk. This should lift the stress on the parts. Your city is looking good but you need to plan more and be sure your idea will work before making the changes, also you need to get started on the mountain in the middle as this will help pull it in to perspective and aid in future work.

    on the wall of the sloped train track, it would be cool to see some urban grafitty. maybe done with snot bricks:)

    I was watching yesterday's video and was thinking that the bridges could do with some work, but I decided not to mention it as it seemed like a lot of work... I see you've gone and done it anyways, and it was definitely the right call! They look SO much better 🎉
    Day 56 of daily streak.
