    DBK, as a retired Active Duty US Marine (not a desk jockey, but a Marine that actually spent years in the field), I loved this video! It was hilarious and I don’t feel this video was insulting or an unfair test. I personally carried this knife and do love it; but I agree that it will not perform as good as other modern day survival knives since the original design was focused on only slashing and stabbing human flesh. I’m a new subscriber and love how interesting you two make your videos; they always make me laugh.

    Got my fathers kbar he had on his side when he was in Vietnam going up and down the rivers in the Brown Water Navy. Only 2 things I asked for before he passed. His kbar and the American flag that saved his life that has bullet holes, shrapnel holes and his blood on the silk Flag he, and now I own. That flag was hanging on his boat when they got hit with a mortar, killed everyone but him on his boat, thankfully he was changing the barrel of his gun, when the mortar blew him off the boat into the flag and as his body and flag hit the rivers water the flag had wrapped itself around his body and created a make shift life preserver and kept him afloat and alive. The next boat picked him up little later with the flag and my father said last thing he remember was waking up in the hospital they had there and the flag was given to him with the story about it saving his life and he needed to keep that flag.. that flag is only reason my father, my brother, me and all our children are alive today. So it means a lot to us. Since I was the only one as of now who went thru the military I got his Flag and his K bar. My father lived with shrapnel lodged in his spine for rest of his life from that explosion, yet he was put bk into Vietnam just a few months after that incident.

    This knife was based on a hunting knife originally created by the union cutlery company back around the turn of the century.
    This knife was originally designed to process game in a time when people were smart enough to carry an axe or hatchet as well as a multi bladed folder such as a cattle knife in their pocket.
    It's not going to be the best knife for wood craft or abuse in a " survival " situation.
    When the USMC adopted it they just wanted a good utilitarian knife that could also serve well for combat use if need be.
    It wasn't expected to be able to be hammered through a log like so many today seem to think is somehow the measure of a knife.

    Getting a Ka-Bar blade between the ribs is not going to make the receiver of such a stab upset because he got stabbed with an inferior knife.
    The greatness of a knife is not found in the hardness of the steel or sharpness of the blade. It is found in the ability to serve the user well, and no other knife has served so many Marines as well as the Ka-Bar (and the Navy and Army equivalent knives that served their own services).
    I still have my USMC issued Ka-Bar and I use it more than any other knife I have ever owned (besides my kitchen knives of course). I have a couple of fun little OTF knives, but for really serious stuff, I would take a Ka-Bar over most others. Not that it is the best knife, but it is the knife I know best.

    I learned my lesson the hard way - the Ka-Bar is NOT designed for bushcraft or survival. It is a fighting knife. I used the Ka-Bar to baton a wrist thick sapling and it bent severely at the tang. I had a buddy who’s USMC and he always said the Ka-Bar could pry open anything, not true. It has a rat tail tang, very thin metal. However, I love the Ka-Bar, I was gifted one for Christmas 09’ and loved the smell of the leather handle.

    Still made in the same factory in Olean, New York state. Can get US Army markings (US ARMY), USMC markings (USMC), US Navy markings (USN), and, US Coast Guard markings (USCG). Don't know why there is not a US Air Force marked Kabar. Should be USAF.
    An all leather sheath with the service branch stamp. US Army has the American Eagle, US Marines has the Eagle, Globe and Anchor. US Navy has the same Eagle the is on the Navy's flag. The US Coast Guard has crossed oars with a rescue buoy in the background.
    The hilt hand protector has an intentional 8° bend. This added at the factory. If you get a real Kabar you will have that 8° bend. It was wasn't dropped.
    There is a full tang that goes though the handle and the steel pommel. Has a think pin that goes through the pommel to fasten. The all leather hand grip is compressed leather. I have never lost my grip with my Kabar.
    The story of the origins of Kabar was from a letter from a customer. The guy could barely write so the letter was difficult to read. There was a sentence that was supposed to be "Kill a bear." Most of the letters were unintelligible. So it was written like "K??? A bar." So Kabar was derived from "Kill a bear."
    Have had the US Army stamped Kabar for years. A perfect knife.

    This was a great video, I think any real knife lover knows that knives are designed with a purpose in mind, the kabar is a fighting knife that can be sharpened to razor sharp levels but by no means is it a prying tool or a survival knife. It's good for cutting, stabbing, and ok for chopping and batoning but not really ideal for bushcraft tasks. It's like a hunting rifle vs an pistol, two very different purposed weapons that could technically fill in for eachother in some instances but it's not ideal.

    Any knife has a purpose. This knife has a purpose: kill people. It's not made for survival, it has not to resist to nature and hard use. It has to kill people. And it has to cost the less possible in order to equip as many soldiers as it can. A military survival knife useful for bushcraft is much more like a Fallkniven F1.

      Not really. It's a multi-purpose design based on pre-war hunting knives. If you want a kiling knife, take a look at F-S. If you want an alternative multi-purpose knife, check NR-40 or NKVD knife by Vacha-Trud factory

      @@tm1182 think as you wish. In WWII there where many episodes of hand to hand combat and even in Vietnam war. It's not like anyone is going around with a knife in the hand to kill an enemy, but when you are on the ground, you have finished your ammo, lost your rifle or attacked by an enemy at close distance, having a combat knife can save your life. A multipurpose knife has nothing to do with a knife like this, which is not comfortable nor effective for any everyday activity. A multipurpose knife is much more like a Fallkniven F1.

    I know you guys probably have read your wiki on this, (and also know wiki isn't the best "source" for information), but I found some interesting things about this knife. Nothing serious:
    (Also - I carry Ka-Bar every day, as a civilian, and have it as my main "full tang" knife (also why the fuck didn't they just full-tang it??)
    1. The umbrella corporation (not zombies) for Ka-Bar is Cutco "the World's Finest Cutlery". So Americans eat their enemies, right? Fine.
    1b. Key People listed for cutco is Jim Schitt Sr. (That's the serious Schitt, if you didn't know) - and with a revenue of 200 MILLION dollars, of course he is.
    2. The term Ka-Bar comes from an alleged story of a man in the 1920s who had used one to kill a bear after his rifle jammed. He wrote to the company about their great knife saving his skin... but only some of the text was legible. So... of the words "Kill a Bear" only a few letters could be clearly read: K... a b.ar..... (You can't make this shit up) (Also this wouldn't be the first American who can't read or write, before they're old enough to be dispatching bears.... God Bless Mr'rika.... right?)
    I am a shitty journalist (as opposed to a good one) so I've gotten about half way through the wiki and will now (like a lazy shit) tune back into your videos... which might be more entertaining if only about as intelligent). I just thought I might pop in and tell you these things.
    Hilarious.
    Love your show guys. Keep it up (and yes I saw your 'quit' video. Suck it up buttercups. The world needs you now).
    Much love.

    Okay, I've had my Kabar since he early 80's. Back when it had a nice brown powder coat, plus the swedge or false edge is extremely sharp. As for chopping and battoning, this knife was NEVER meant to do that. It is after all a Combat/Utility knife. I've carried mine on many hikes. I've used it to cut food, cord, leather and nylon webbing. It does all those very well. Remember its a Combat/killing knife first and foremost.

    • @Iamthedudeman00
      @Iamthedudeman00 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oleum Camino I agree, having the kydex handle seems to have improved the strength of the standard kabar knives(if you don’t know what I am talking about, look up some kabar destruction tests, you will find most of the leather handled kabar break at the blade-handle intersection, and that is a very bad thing! Because you suddenly have a very unusable knife!) I then looked up the destruction tests for kydex handled kabar, they break on the blade, that is good because even though only half a blade is left, it is better than no blade). The standard kabar does not have a lanyard hole, that could be useful, the knife still has a rat tail tang, but I guess you could say that is just to save weight, but if you look up the Glock trench knife on TH-cam, that thing uses some Glock polymer and it only has a tang no more than 2 inches long, but it is hell of a beater knife(probably because the polymer is so damn good). I always like kabar knife, ever since I first saw it 17 years ago as a kid. But I don’t think they have caught up with the tactical market today, they don’t make a lot of good tactical folders or small fixed blades that are anything unique like the old kabar knife, look at Benchmade, Spyderco or Emerson, the world had changed but kabar is pretty much the same, their steel is still 1095, d2, and only recently they started to play around with s35vn. I think they would not still have a business today if not for their marine combat knife model...

    • @Iamthedudeman00
      @Iamthedudeman00 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oleum Camino yes buddy I agree many things you said, but I know as I continue to reply this thread it will turn into one of those arguments that never ends. So I intend this reply as my last come backs, haha. I agree with the following: yes 1095 is cheaper, particularly given the knife is for military usage; yes it performs well given the role of fighting; yes it is a good general utility knife too, yes the rubber handles had made it better, yes d2 is the upgrade that people had been waiting for, yes if something works you should not change it... Now where I have to politely disagree is that I was talking about kabar as a company, not just the kabar marine combat knife. The combat knife could use some changes like I previously mentioned(lanyard hole, stronger tang, etc) but as I can imagine, trying to modify a design that is a military contract could be hard. Ok so what if kabar keeps the marine knife design but also come up with other more modern knife designs for people looking for something a little special? But kabar did not seem to make an effort to transit into the tactical knife market that boomed in the recent 20 years. Benchmade and spyderco sure make a lot of knives, but they are good knives, not crap knives like many gerbers(not all gerbers are bad by the way). Not getting with the market trend is what causes big but traditional companies to be left behind, sometimes broke. To give you an example, the colt's manufacturing company once had a prestigious position in the gun making world, throughout ww2 to early 1980s, but they felt too confident with their position and rather stopped innovation, particularly in the civilian's gun makert, a few other mishaps later, foreign small arms companies overwhelmed the market and colt's once prestigious position is no more.(my story here is rather summarised and can lack in detail but I hope you see my point here). As of today I can hardly recognise any guns designed and manufactured by a home grown US gun company, because of the same reason. That is just what I think. I always like these kabar knives, but I do fear IF some day the U.S. government no longer wants Kabar knives as a standard issue and cilvians mostly have already got the combat marine knife, their business would be in danger. Just take a look at their current catalogue, can you find anything else that is as well designed or awesome as the almost 100 year old design? I don't think so...
