I have the USMC OKC3S and I like it. I have the Army version also. The USMC is a thinner steel and 1/2" longer. The Army has thicker steel and 1/2" shorter blade. For fighting = USMC version. Survival Knife = Army. Historically, the Army knife's thicker blades were made to open ammo crates in the past wars.
This was very helpful for a buyer or seller. I think I have a USMC Field Knife with a leather sheath I used it when I was a Boy Scout about 60 years ago (yea I'm old).
the ka bar at minute 6,29... i had one of those what actully kind is it ....i like the dark handle one & dark brown one...id like to get another dark handle one
I have a Camillus NY Ka-Bar knife that I got around 1980. I still have, have carried it for many years, and it still takes a razor sharp edge. All the leather portions are treated against moisture and rot and the handle has two pins, and was dipped in the same sort of tough coating. It held up really well. I also have a Glock field knife I bought from a young Marine who carried it in two deployments in AFG. He said what you said, everybody dumped the the bayonet into the seabag and bought another knife to carry, frequently a civilian Ka-bar or clone or a Glock field knife. He said the Glock knives were popular because they were light, didn't break, attached anywhere on the Molle easily and if damaged were only about $30 to replace. He said he mostly used his dad's old Buck 110 for things like opening MREs and used the Glock knife for stuff like prying things open, cutting wire, the sort of really rough stuff that knives aren't for. It's obvious that he broke the very end of the point off, and filed it smooth, and there's one chip in the blade. Otherwise it looks just fine.
Gus...i was watching a video yesterday on a Ka bar knife. And these two guys decided i test the knife. So the first thing they did is nail the knife into a tree trunk. In doing so the knife at its guard failed and was bent. Than they proceeded to try to remove the knife by batoning the handle. The handle broke off and the blade was left in the tree. I find it really ridiculous the testing of this particular knife on how its abused. You really should again post a video truely explaingbthe role thatvthis knife has had in its history. This knife its an excellent field knife coupled with a tomahawk and a saw. Sure it ain't an esee 5...but it wasnt designed to be that knife. People are comparing apples to oranges. I dont know about you but i would carry a Ka-bar anywhere along with the understanding that i wouldnt slam my knife into a tree...call it a day and than explain why it was done and to justify it with some upsurd comment. These guys thought that they were metalergists!! They take away from its history. Its a great knife; its a warriors knife; its an American knife; its a outdoors knife; it's a camp knife; its a bikers knife and a gangsters knife two. Fuck OJ used this knife...he had too!!! I see knives on some ofvthese channels that have never been used. You gotta guy out of Alaska who loves his Pacific Chris Reeves knife. This dude has never used his knife. But he loves talking about his Chris Reeves knife. He thinks to that to live in Alaska you need a C.R. knife.
Wise Input my friend. People have gone nuts with Batoning things. I get it. I’ve done much of that in my videos. We need to come back to reality though
my case kinda came in rough shape it came with the guard wiggly and the leather handle looked a bit rough and pretty dry the sheath for it came in pretty good shape tho some white stuff on the front of it that may clean off not sure and some random dark spots on the back of the sheath
Oh hell yeah now we're talking, I've got a small collection of the older Kabar style blades from a few different company's, I also dig big Bowie's & chopper's 👍👍
Thanks man, I got the full size knife and the “Short” in the all black tactile looking versions. Bad ass knives, being an army vet I really love my knives even though I never really used em at work. They did give me a sense of heritage that I felt like a G.I.Joe kind of thing that I longed for. Haha. But I want to get the leather handle one. Really high quality for made in USA and under $100 online
Gotta say, My Ontario is finished very well. Absolutely nothing like the one in the video. Not well ground, but 30 minutes on the bench, and it is now shaving sharp. I've had it three years and do a lot of batoming. No issues whatsoever. Construction is identical to the "K-BAR" with the 5/8th" tang running the length of the handle, stepping down to 9/16" shoulder for the pommel slot, which is pinned. This does not have a rat tail tang. That's something completely different. I sanded off the black paint, revealing beautiful stacked leather, which got a generous saturation of Obenauf's. No. I don't hammer it into a tree and use it to step up to my Bug Out Tree House. But as a sturdy camp tool, it's as good as any and will baton through 4" hardwood like a splitting moll. The Ontario SP-2 is just as good - maybe better because it has a solid rubber grip and a 5" blade, which many find more practical.
Awesome video. I love Kabar/military knives. It's funny how the prices for these knives vary. I live in Canada and the prices are completey backward to what you listed. Here the Case version, next to the OKC3S are the 2 most expensive "kabars" to purchase and I had them all except for the case which is expensive here in Canada.
Don’t leave them in the sheath. If you do, spay they with olive oil and wrap them in plastic wrap. When ever you are storing your blades always cost them with oil and separate them from the leather as it draws moisture. As far as removing just use steel wool. Don’t worry about scratching it because you can polish with a dremel or grinder wheel with the proper attachments. Some people polish with a strop and stropping compound as well.
Love the Ontario SP6. Mine is the older stamped 1095. They switched to 1075 steel so maybe you did get a bad heat treatment. The newer 1075 blades have the markings lazer etched instead of stamped. Joe X shows how the SP6 takes abuse. The one reason I like it is it's a stabbing blade design and is exactly like the OKC bayonet shape designed to penetrate. One knife you need ro add to that collection is the Buck 650 Nighthawk. Talk about an indestructible blade. The fact that our stupid military decided to not do the contract is beyond me. 1/4" of 420HC and a stabbing design like the SP6/OKC Bayonet. You can find destruction tests on it that are impressive! And, from my research, and according to Larrin's toughness chart, 420HC is some of the toughest steel around!
My friend, thank you for that long and thoughtful reply and also thank you for taking the time to comment on this video! Welcome to the channel! I will certainly check out that knife you mentioned!
Chro-van is a chrome vanadium alloy, chrome making it more rust resistant (also makes it hard to weld) and vanadium making it more abrasion resistant. 1095 being .95 percent carbon.
I still have my Ka-bar from my Army days (1986-1992). I actually bought the knife in 1988. My unit let me carry it on my LBE, but I had to darken the leather with black shoe polish. Looks like crap, but great knife. I have been eyeing that Case version, but still mulling it over. Great review video!
I have a Ka Bar USMC knife that has the red washers but there is also a punched depresiion (hole)near the top of the blade at the top left of the letters Ka Bar. There is red paint inside the hole. Has anyone ever seen this before?
I have the Ontario version. It is an exact copy of the "kabar" requisition requirement. Good, solid knife, although I have greatly modified the edge angle and I've ground the clip point to a straight line that strengthens the tip. On the tang thing: These do not have a rat tail tang. Those are tangs that taper to a thickness less than what they start at. All requisition USMC designs have a straight tang of 9/16" all the way thru the handle that shoulders down square to 1/2" at the pommel cap, which is cross pinned. Continous spiking will ecventually loosen the pommel cap and can loosen the cross guard as well. A simple punch and hammer will quickly solve the problem. Thus, if they have a weak spot, it is at the point where the blade transitions into the grip, which can be broken under extreme stress. It is not easy to do but some do it just to "prove" the knife is crap.
hey my brother thank you for the correction on the tang! sometimes my knife slang gets a little loose! and thank you for telling me about the tang in detail! love them too much to shred them apart! thanks for watching and commenting! Welcome to the channel!
Funny bit of history, when the military wanted a new fighting knife several companies answered the call with their designs. Onterio won but in true US fashion, the DOD awarded the contract to kabar BUT to produce onterios design. Thats right, the iconic kabar was designed by OKC
I actually think it’s a really good design. It’s relatively thick and you can use it to pride things open and great for stabbing your opponent. I wished they would make it out of the top of the line materials.
Nice collection, I broke a Buck 120 at the tang like your Ontario broke, I have 5 fixed blades now, a Ka-bar, Sykes Fairburn commando, Rigid r19 razorback, and Aitor oso blanco and buck 119.
I had a ka-bar my parents got me when I graduated from boot camp, but somebody stole it when I was deployed for Desert Storm. Recently I bought the Case version. It's my understanding that it's based on the model Case submitted during WWII, but didn't get a government contract.
@@gustifer0311 yeah, it really is a nice knife. I was going to get another Ka-bar but then I stumbled onto the Case. Thanks for the video...great collection!
Was that a Spec Plus fighter I saw broken on the cover? I've got the D2, 3rd Generation K-BAR Fighting/ utility knife w/ original Blade Tech kydex sheath. My OKC M9 bayonet is affixed to my M590A1.
Field utility. Opening boxes, etc. warfare has been increasingly longer distance especially the last 30 years. The infantry will always be in need of a short range close combat weapon, but only a very, very small percentage will be afforded the opportunity to use in such situations. Was some bayonet usage recorded during the battle of Falluja also known as operation phantom fury in 2004.
@@mikeyob4271 I don’t have experience on that battlefield, so I can’t testify to that. If munitions are cut short for the Russians, like they were in the beginning, I would say that that might likely be an option. However, I think most men would rather surrender first . it seems their drafted fighters have very little will to fight, and bayonet fighting is something that takes a lot of will.
@@gustifer0311 SSgt. David Bellavia, US Army, earned the Medal of Honor for actions during the 2nd Battle of Fallujah in 2004. In his book he talks about engaging in hand to hand combat with an insurgent and using his Gerber combat knife to introduce him to his 72 virgins. I later read that he was carrying a Gerber Applegate combat folder. (Interestingly, I carried that same blade in Iraq in 2006-07, along with a few others). Yeah knives aren’t used regularly for combat, but it happens. I regularly transported enemy prisoners on helicopters, and given the close proximity, we carried condition 4. Also, nobody wanted to start putting rounds downrange inside a helicopter at 3000 feet. During those operations, your blade was your primary weapon if it got bad. Semper Fi🇺🇸
Seen a lot of these on eBay at around $149 and doesn’t come with the issued sheath. I plan on grabbing one next week, these things are going to start climbing in prices as the supply dries up, similar to the Army M9’s.
It varies per manufacturer and can change from decade to decade. Sheaths are often lost and easily replaced with numerous manufacturers stamping “Ka bar” on the side and some not. It would be hard to identify a knife based off of a sheath alone, but it’s not impossible.
strongly recommend you keep your videos short, but informative . . . like a full video summed up in 10 mins . . . the broken knife is a result of oxidation that's hard to detect . . . oxidation happens if the blade absorbs moisture during shaping of the molten hot steel into a knife . . . it's a rare phenomena but they do happen . . . any form of oxidation in a blade cannot be easily detected, except if & when put under a electron microscope . . .
The case doesn't have two pins in the pommel, Its one pin that goes all the way through the pommel and tang, it's also manufactured by Ontario knives for Case, not that it matters very much anymore, Ontario was bought out last year, they closed shop, and all the employees were terminated.
Was alittle shocked that during the comparing of the mark 2 combat knives that there was no mention of the fact that both the ka bar & case knives are made for the commercial/civilian market. While the Ontario knife is a U.S. Military contract knife made to Gov. Spec's. That explains the more refined finish on case & Ka Bar knives compared to the True Military Ontario.
I can verify that 1095CroVan (small percentages of chromium, vanadium, and a few other elements) is harder to sharpen that straight 1075 to 1085 carbon steel. I tried to get my Ka-Bar brand Ka-Bar back to hair shaving sharp, on my Work Sharp Ken Onion. I couldn't do it. Admittedly, I was rushing, and I'm a novice when it comes to knife sharpening. I think I wasn't using the correct angle, or the correct grit to sharpen my Ka-Bar. Regardless, it's still harder to sharpen. And from my experience, if you buy one with the Kydex sheath, it comes hair shaving sharp, but dulls quickly, even without use. Just taking it out and putting it back in the sheath dulled the blade. That's fairly common for polymer spring-retention sheaths.
Looks like that Ontario budget friendly knife broke at the stress risers created by making 90deg square corners used to fit the hilt...a knife makers no-no, but probably present on every knife you have on the table and exactly why I would never carry any of those into a situation where my life depended on my knife..etc. Ty for your service.

@@gustifer0311 They did issue us a black gerber multi tool and a seat belt cutter which I still have both of them but no bayonet/tactical type knife. Unless you consider the knife on the Gerber tool a tactical knife lol!
Great video! Thank you Marine!....I have one which was gifted to me, and I treasure the knife. I broke a small piece off the tip, so worked it back down to perfection. I colored the red leather to make it dark with some black boot polish, and now if I EDC, no weird MF's come anywhere near it. The K-Bar guarantees a 30ft walking radius! Haha!

I have the original USMC KA-BAR and the Big Brother version. Big Brother knife kicks ass!
First trip in the field at Lejeune our company clerk ordered KaBars for us . He became an overnight hero . Fourth in from the left . Blade is stamped US and Camillus NY . That was1972 and still a cherished possession ! I have others and have given many as gifts but never that one . Great post ! Semper Fi brother “Gus” !
One long lasting brother from our days in the Corps “Gus Walsh 1371” . A life long friend, others have passed ! Here’s health to you and yours !!!
Gus, I have a USN KA Bar knife from WWII in excellent condition. I am trying to get more info. Can you help?
Hey brother I would love to! Shoot me your email and I will reach out and get some pics to help you identify it
This was very helpful for a buyer or seller. I think I have a USMC Field Knife with a leather sheath I used it when I was a Boy Scout about 60 years ago (yea I'm old).

You should hear how people who don’t know pronounce Chili NY or Leroy NY.
the ka bar at minute 6,29... i had one of those what actully kind is it ....i like the dark handle one & dark brown one...id like to get another dark handle one
That first knife, was my 2nd boy scout knife that I.wore on my camp belt for decades.
Great vid, subbed

@4:57 you mention taking care of the leather handle. How do you taking care of those stacked leather rings?
Dude i have so many blades too, so i figured I'd order one more lol, waiting for the KaBar D2 Extreme. It looks Badass.
Great knife, served wall for years ,still one of the best
Oh hell yeah now we're talking, I've got a small collection of the older Kabar style blades from a few different company's, I also dig big Bowie's & chopper's 👍👍

Thanks man, I got the full size knife and the “Short” in the all black tactile looking versions. Bad ass knives, being an army vet I really love my knives even though I never really used em at work. They did give me a sense of heritage that I felt like a G.I.Joe kind of thing that I longed for. Haha. But I want to get the leather handle one. Really high quality for made in USA and under $100 online
Nice collection.
Hey thank you for watching and commenting my brother! Welcome to the channel and thank you for your input!
How can I get some rust-looking spots off the blade without potentially ruining the coating? Also how to prevent the spots in the future?
Don’t leave them in the sheath. If you do, spay they with olive oil and wrap them in plastic wrap. When ever you are storing your blades always cost them with oil and separate them from the leather as it draws moisture. As far as removing just use steel wool. Don’t worry about scratching it because you can polish with a dremel or grinder wheel with the proper attachments. Some people polish with a strop and stropping compound as well.
Is the rust on the powdercoat or on polished part?
Thank you my friend! Welcome to the channel! Hope to see more of you around!
0 being the second digit means it has no alloying material. i just went over this in classes im taking for my heat treat job.
@@patriot-1996 thank you for the knowledge bomb 💣!
Ontario has a finish on the handle to keep it from rotting from moisture
Welcome home, Brother!
I own an Ontario sp 6...im haveing a hard time keeping a good edge on it but otherwise seems to be solid
The sheath sucks for the sp6, does it fit in the bayonet sheath?
Yes it does!!!!
@@gustifer0311 Thank you, sir.
Funny bit of history, when the military wanted a new fighting knife several companies answered the call with their designs. Onterio won but in true US fashion, the DOD awarded the contract to kabar BUT to produce onterios design. Thats right, the iconic kabar was designed by OKC
@@joshuarose8451 Gotta wonder if politics or outright backscratching was involved......nah, couldn't happen.
@@OutnBacker never would brass allow that. They must have just got confused about which company designed which knife lmao
Beautifull knives 🙏🏽💯✔️🔥👑💎
I actually think it’s a really good design. It’s relatively thick and you can use it to pride things open and great for stabbing your opponent. I wished they would make it out of the top of the line materials.
These were sharp and they stayed sharp during use. I use to own 5 of these with different makers

I had a ka-bar my parents got me when I graduated from boot camp, but somebody stole it when I was deployed for Desert Storm. Recently I bought the Case version. It's my understanding that it's based on the model Case submitted during WWII, but didn't get a government contract.
You may be very well right. Many companies were awarded contracts. I love my case, I think it may very well be my favorite:)

Was that a Spec Plus fighter I saw broken on the cover? I've got the D2, 3rd Generation K-BAR Fighting/ utility knife w/ original Blade Tech kydex sheath. My OKC M9 bayonet is affixed to my M590A1.
what is the most use of knife in modern warfare?
Field utility. Opening boxes, etc. warfare has been increasingly longer distance especially the last 30 years. The infantry will always be in need of a short range close combat weapon, but only a very, very small percentage will be afforded the opportunity to use in such situations. Was some bayonet usage recorded during the battle of Falluja also known as operation phantom fury in 2004.
Well said friend AMEN. Trench warfare Ukrainian?
@@mikeyob4271 I don’t have experience on that battlefield, so I can’t testify to that. If munitions are cut short for the Russians, like they were in the beginning, I would say that that might likely be an option. However, I think most men would rather surrender first . it seems their drafted fighters have very little will to fight, and bayonet fighting is something that takes a lot of will.
@Gus Wolf
I totally agree. But when you're out of ammo... what else is there ? HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF. I also enjoy HISTORY. Best regards, friend.

Seen a lot of these on eBay at around $149 and doesn’t come with the issued sheath. I plan on grabbing one next week, these things are going to start climbing in prices as the supply dries up, similar to the Army M9’s.

There are many but this one is mine,1996 k bar and no it ain't for sale...😊
I carried the M7 back in the day.
gus whats the difference between the dark brown sheath & light tan sheath...like in make or war or years
It varies per manufacturer and can change from decade to decade. Sheaths are often lost and easily replaced with numerous manufacturers stamping “Ka bar” on the side and some not. It would be hard to identify a knife based off of a sheath alone, but it’s not impossible.
strongly recommend you keep your videos short, but informative . . . like a full video summed up in 10 mins . . . the broken knife is a result of oxidation that's hard to detect . . . oxidation happens if the blade absorbs moisture during shaping of the molten hot steel into a knife . . . it's a rare phenomena but they do happen . . . any form of oxidation in a blade cannot be easily detected, except if & when put under a electron microscope . . .
I prefer a F S dagger ❤
The case doesn't have two pins in the pommel, Its one pin that goes all the way through the pommel and tang, it's also manufactured by Ontario knives for Case, not that it matters very much anymore, Ontario was bought out last year, they closed shop, and all the employees were terminated.
My Brother!
Gotta get the TOPS Springfield Armory knife now :)
Hey Brother! Thanks for watching and commenting! That is one sweet looking blade! Just looked it up!
I like them all🤙
Was alittle shocked that during the comparing of the mark 2 combat knives that there was no mention of the fact that both the
ka bar & case knives are made for the commercial/civilian market.
I have an sp6 with a sharp swedge. It’s an older one
Interesting!
I absolutely luv my Ka-Bar Knives! :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
Looks like that Ontario budget friendly knife broke at the stress risers created by making 90deg square corners used to fit the hilt...a knife makers no-no, but probably present on every knife you have on the table and exactly why I would never carry any of those into a situation where my life depended on my knife..etc.
