    I use the M6 irons. I absolutely love them!

    Thanks guys, you just confirmed my intuition in changing from the M6 to the P790. I'm an 8.2 handicap and I hadn't had a new set of clubs in 17 years, so I finally decided to go and grab a new set a few months ago. The fitter put me in a set of the M6's with a graphite shaft (which I was wary of but trusted anyway.) Despite the forgiveness and distance, I just didn't feel the control (I.e. stopping power/spin) on the course, even coming from my old steel shaft Ping G2's. I went to a new fitter today and tried out the P790's. Even as a 5'3" female having to choke down on the demo shafts, I was hitting 10 yards further with these, and with more precision with the C-tapered shaft than I was with the M6 Atmos super lightweight graphite! Maybe the first fitter assumed since I was female and just getting back to playing on a regular basis, I was given the generic "go to" with the M6 graphites, but really, the P790 fits my game a lot better. Thanks for the review. Can't wait for my new set of irons to come in, and thanks to the fitter who really spent time to determine what specs fit my swing speed, feel, lie angle, shaft weight/flex (R) and length. I think I'll be much happier with them. The M6s I have would fit perfectly for a small LH person who wants maximum forgiveness and a super light shaft (ie. high school or older, experienced female player).

    I just got the m5 irons and love them! The performance is identical to the p790 in this test also and they are like $400 cheaper. I understand the p790 has a forged face and feel a bit better... but the m5's aren't getting the love they deserve I feel out there in the golf world :-)

    Great review as always very comprehensive and well explained. Recently had a Taylormade fitting excellent I’m a senior 21.8 handicapper and tried the P790 and hit some good shots but my bad shots lost 25 yards. Leave your ego at the door and trust the fitter in the end the Sim Max 2 was for me giving me solid shots yielding 17 yards longer but better dispersion. Happily for my ego I didn’t need the O/S model!

    Think the handicap rating is a helpful indicator but for people out there looking at getting these second hand just consider what your strengths and weaknesses are. I'm a 13 handicapper and Have got myself the p760's and they work for me as I tend to strike my irons quite well for my handicap (short game could do with some work) also I've moved from ping g15 to p760 which is a huge change but they work fine for me. So definitely try irons out of your handicap range just in case they work for you.

    Great video! I play off a 7 and I play the p760 I actually have 2 sets and won't be changing anytime soon. The feel, thin top line, and looks are second to none. Also, the spin is perfect not too high not too low and the ability to shape shots with the p760 playing tp5x and distance control is astonishing. Also, forged clubs are the only way to go in my opion the feel is so much better than non forged and helps you really know where you're striking the ball and provides great feedback for those who are not used to forged clubs

    Just an FYI, when you're giving the handicap recommendations, and you want to express a handicap x and above, it should be notated as ≥x, not x> as that's the same as saying less than x. For example, for the M5s, what you have notated suggests that it's for below a 5 handicap, even if that's not what you meant.

    I tested both the M CGB and the M6 and the launch you get off both clubs is ridiculous! I play off 20 and went for the M CGB just because on poor shots i found it would still get up and go whereas the M6 was slightly worse.

    After much testing of different brands and clubs and moving from the srixons, I ended up with the p760 in graphite. Even though my handicap is 12 the feel and consistency and less offset (which I much prefer as I rarely ever slice) of the p760s even with of course some slight loss of distance made it a no brained. First time I love the irons and have confidence with them. Tried everything from mizuno to ping to callaway to xxio and more...never expected to end up with tm. And found the p790 too hot and less predictable/consistent (dispersion).

    Hi I am a 14 handicap. I am fairly good iron stricker but lose shots due to my short game. I went for club fitting and the fitter suggested the P790 with a stiff shaft. My swing speed with a 7 iron is about ~ 80MPH. When I asked about the M5 or M6 he told me these are not suited for my level. I only tested the 7 iron and I was hitting it really good. He seem to suggest that other clubs will have more offset. I have a tendency to hook/draw the ball too much. Do you think it is a good idea for me to go with the P790?

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Christian it's really hard to give solid advice knowing so little about your game. Yes M6 has more offset than P790, but M5 in the seven iron is less. Extra offset will do little to help a draw/hook as the CG is further back, a deeper CG along with the offset naturally wants to square/close the face at impact.

    On game improvement irons does a slow swing speed affect how the clubs perform between brands

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes for sure Mj, each brand will set their models up to who they believe their target audience is.
      As an example a lot (but not all) slower swing models have a little more loft to help flight shots to maximise carry at slower speeds. It's really important to get fitted for a model that suits your particular sped.
      Hope that helps.

For instance hit 5 shots with the 4-pw all with the M5 let's say. To give people a better understanding of what the club gapping looks like for any specific model. Great vid though. im begin told that I need a 120g shaft by a fitter but I only swing 85 ish MPH. i'm about a 12 to 15 hcp and am interested in M6, fitter said I don't need "Game improvement" iron. But I rarely hit the sweet spot, so he has me confused. I liked the way the ball jumped off the M6 when I trid them. I never have a problem getting the ball up in the air. My question is, what would a Dynamic Gold S300 120g shaft do to the ball flight height VS the factory shaft?

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the question Ed.
      Dynamic Gold vs KBS Max is like comparing chalk and cheese. Dynamic Gold 120 is low launch, low spin, where KBS Max (the stock steel shaft in the M6) is high launch 92/93 grams (DG 120 is 116/118grams).
      Do you know if you hit down on the ball Ed? Could be your fitter is making recommendations based on your attack angle. Narrower soles tend to suit more downward attack angles.

    • @TM-lc8ef
      @TM-lc8ef 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was a 20 handicap back when I switched from GI irons to the 2017 P770s. “Handicap limits” on forged blade/players cavity irons are an overplayed misconception. Game improvement irons should be renamed to game enjoyment irons. Forged players irons will force you to either become a better ball striker. If you actually want to get better at golf, the first step is getting off game improvement irons. If you’re already a low handicap, buy them. If you’re a mid to high handicap and are committed to actually getting better at golf, buy them.

    Hello, thanks a lot for this test. Stupid question probably, why the best players in the world choose to play with the P730 while in your test the M CGB are better in distance, forgiveness, Backspin, Height, ball speed ?
    Is it only for the sensation, the feeling ?
    Regards.

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not a stupid question at all Vincent.
      The very best players are rarely concerned about distance. Their focus is being able to 'shape' shots into flag positions. And land shots on shelves on the green - with the right amount of side spin to take shots towards the flag which is a trait very low forgiveness irons gives them.
      They just don't get the same control with irons that are aimed at distance or forgiveness.
      'Feel/sound' also plays a role too.

Net for me would be is the P790 so long in 7 iron yet conssitent, that I'd not hit it into the green vs a 8-9-PW?

      Our test pro swears by his i210's Stephen. Feel of course is subjective, in our book blindfolded lots of golfers would struggle to spot the i210 isn't forged where the two other models you mention are.
      In terms of numbers our test pro has the Titleist CB and i210 at 165 where the P760s added 3 yards (168 yards).
      i210 is a great blend of some forgiveness, reasonable distance and very good feel and feedback. Unsurprisingly it's Ping's most played tour iron.

      I have about 3-4 months before I’ll be ready to swing 100% and be able to compare these. It looks like The Ping i210’s are definitely the front runner !! TBH, since I first posted my comment I’ve added Mizuno MP-20 MMC to the mix ! How would you compare them to the i210’s ?

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stephendibari7704 No problems. If having current models is important to you, it might be worth remembering the i210 are two years old come July/August this year, so the model maybe updated on Ping's usual release schedule.
      You can't go wrong with MMC, but we'd expect to see people opt for them over i210 because they're forged. Our testing has shown MMC is a bit faster, launches a fraction lower and carries about 5 yards further.

      Today's Golfer awesome 👏 great to get your input on the MMC !! As far as having the most newest club, not a major concern. After my physical therapy is done from my shoulder operation sometime in late spring I won’t have any clubs to play with.
      My Apex pro forged irons are up for sale on eBay, Super super low spinning for all the irons and not a good fit for me. Long story but last February 2019 I was custom fit for them, at club championship NJ and the fitter did not advise me that they were too low spinning!! He was blown away by the 5 iron going 10 yards further than my X Forged ‘18 5 iron and he overlooked the low spin. My Trackman #’s didn’t calculate Ascent angle, but nonetheless he should’ve picked up on it
      I’ll be going for a custom fit at 2ndswinggolf near Philadelphia later this spring after my shoulder rehab is done and I’ll be comparing the i210, MP-20 MMC, TM P760 (and maybe JPX 919 Forged). Graphite shafts will be a definite choice to lessen the vibration on my shoulders !

Previous clubs were Calloway forged irons. I definitely like the feel of forged... I’ll never go buy another set that doesn’t have at least a forged face.

    Isn’t the distance just coming from the jacked up lofts though?

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anthony Jones Good question. The answer is yes and no. Stronger lofts do mean more ball speed and distance. But what we're seeing more and more is how brands are getting strong lofted irons to launch, spin, peak out and drop onto the green at similar angles to more traditional lofted models, which is where the gain comes in.
      Strong lofted irons are absolutely not for everyone, but some of the latest models can bring a different dimension to a golfers game.

    • @banditbaker1675
      @banditbaker1675 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the new Iron designs if manufacturers didn't strengthen the lofts the Irons would fly & peak too High. If you check out the Table that the testers produced the stronger lofted Clubs were actually flying higher and descending at a steep angle than the more traditionally lofted Irons in the Test. If I were to Bag a TM set of Irons it would either be the 760 or 790's, but to be honest I am not a Fan of TM.

      Bandit Baker I prefer long irons to hybrids so with these stronger lofted clubs between a 5, 4 and 3 iron they only have like 2 degrees between them so not much of a gap to play with. That’s why I play blades. Haven’t found much difference in forgiveness between them and so called game improvement irons. My bad shots are always going to be bad doesn’t matter how big the club is 😂

      @@muffin0079 Yes it's important that golfers use Clubs that suit their game & skills level and that their Bags are set-up so that the distances are correctly Gapped. Personally, I haven't used Blades for over 20 years as I find them too penalising (on distance loss) on mishits, though I still love the look of a well-designed Blade (such as the new Z Blades from Srixon which to my eye look stunning).

      Tiger plays a slightly modified 730, longer in the face by a few mms and heavier swing weight. But that's what you get as a tour pro true, custom build. I use 730s myself, presently 19 handicap, 7 before injury and old age took their toll, but I had to have my professional weight the heads to my preferred swing weight, d2, and lie adjusted. These were supposedly custom fit. Taylor made only offer 1 swing weight to joe public. If that doesn't fit you tough.

    • @drobster100

      He plays P.7TW with tungsten weight behind the sweet spot and milling on the sole with the sole width consistent through the set, in addition to the longer face. Doesn't look like a P730 IMO.

      The whole idea of strong lofted irons is how they can launch shots higher with a similar amount of spin to weaker lofted models.
      Start testing the same lofts and we'll be complaining they spin too much and fly too high!!!

      The whole idea with strong lofted irons is how they launch and spin shots at a similar rate to weaker lofted models...so you gain in ball speed and carry distance but lose no stopping power.
      Testing the same lofts against each other would not only be misleading, but golfers would complain about shots flying too high and spinning too much!!!

    • @microchip470
      @microchip470 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They present it here as a guide, rather than a hard and fast rule. However, in general, I agree, suggesting a club purely off of handicap is rubbish advice. Handicap is simply a golfer's ability to score relative to par, that's it. There are many variables that go into that, one of which is ball striking ability. Where one could get a sense of ball striking ability from handicap alone, is from the low handicap golfers, who would most likely need to be decent ball strikers in order to have a low handicap.

    • @todaysgolfer
      @todaysgolfer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hence why we said clearly in the video it's only a guide Lucas. We've had some feedback to say it's helped golfers understand which iron might suit them, which was our goal at the outset.
      When brands develop irons they have a target golfer in mind, that's what we're trying to help golfers understand here. And it's not easy when there's so many different models in a range.

    • @jaypross
      @jaypross 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s all marketing. You get better as a golfer, so you need to buy “better players irons”. Just a way to keep you coming back and spending more money as you improve your game.
      Spend your money on lessons then you can learn to strike the ball with any club you choose.
      The Feedback received from forged clubs will have you improve your game faster then having a club that masks your faults. You just need to be patient and let the process play out.
