Great review guys, I’ve come to expect your reviews are the gold standard and this was certainly up there with your best. Currently play Stealth come down from 22 to 15/16 handicap and a senior. Hope to progress to P790 with graphite shaft. I liked the Callaway Rogue ST pro but they have gone and shiny chrome and no light weight shafts now. I also worry that Callaway only seem to launch new clubs for 12 months then drop them. The P790 also like Titleist doesn’t change too much.
Thanks for taking the time to say so Seve, really appreciate your feedback. The P790 are definitely something to aim at. We were just saying a few days ago, that if you owned a set of the original 2017 P790 they wouldn't look or feel out of date today. #GreatIron
Great review. My concern with p790s is the loft progression after the 7 iron. Many irons in the player’s distance category are stronger lofted in the 8,9,PW (titleist t200 PW is 43 degrees) whereas the p790 has remained a bit more traditional with a 45 degree PW.
Great review as always, wonder would you include JPX923 forged irons in the same players distance category? Or compare them like for like? I moved out of the old 790 into the JPX forged, same ball speeds, in a slightly smaller head profile.
Thanks for the feedback Brian, appreciate you taking the time. Yes, we would, the JPX923 Forged definitely fits into the players' distance iron category. On this occasion we stuck to just a few hollow body models, where the Forged is fast face with cavity back. Like for like would make an interesting comparison.
Thanks Tim appreciate the feedback. We will do a complete Players Distance Iron review towards the end of the year, this was much more a first hit with the P790.
I currently play the 2019 version of the p790’s. Im a 3 index and benefit from the forgiveness of the 6-4 irons, but looking for more feel and control for my shorter irons. I found a Taylormade chart that outlines the loft changes that need to be adjusted for gapping for combo sets but I’m a bit hesitant to buy 2 separate models. I’m wondering if you have experience with putting together combo sets of p770 and p790? Or maybe the new designed 2023 p790s are the answer due to the new progression in the irons throughout the set? Thoughts?
Really good review Simon and Neil...thank you. I currently play to a 9 handicap and am looking for new set of irons. I'll try the TM P790s when they become available. Also looking at the Cobra Forged Tec -- which are priced a little more competitively. Have you guys tested the Cobras? If so, how do they compare to the P790s?
Thanks for taking the time to say so Brian, appreciate the feedback. We have hit the Forged Tec, they're lovely, but Cobra send us 4, 6, 8, PW as samples, so we've been unable to compare them to the 7-irons we have from everybody else.
great video......i am 58 years old...7 handicap.....95 mph driver swing speed....i am interested in the P-790's but have an issue....which would you say is possibly the better club P-790 JPX 923 hotmetal Srixon ZX5 or 4 Titleist T200 Cobra forged tec X I currently play the Taylormade Stealth......hit the 7 iron about 150 yards thx and cheers from Canada
still wondering which to pull between the Stealth or the P790s. The data, from most places dictates that they are plus or minus, still fall within same range. Good point about paradym that it might just be gone from the face of the earth in years to come and I fear the same for stealth.
Really depends on your ball striking Jasper. The P790 are aspirational for a lot of golfers, in reality many would likely be served better by a slightly more forgiving Stealth, especially at slightly weaker lofts if your speed is average.
@@todaysgolfer My swing speed is actually on the faster side and with that I find it hard to control. Very tempted to get the stealth but I am also thinking that since the P790 isnt exactly hard clubs, is it better grow with the P790 instead of using stealth during early phases and have to change to something else later.
I think there’s way too much focus on the difference between irons. If you can strike Stealth well you’re almost certainly good enough for P790. Otherwise TM are marketing 4 different irons to
Do you mean the new Apex 24 Pro? We're just waiting for our samples to arrive. Will make an interesting test but the new Pro is 33deg in the 7-iron, where the P790 is 30.5deg. There's likely to be a ball speed/distance difference.
Interesting question. Obviously we can only comment on the data we see, but considering the amount of internal changes it would be a bit strange to not expect some sort of changes in spin. Possibly Neil is hitting the ball a fraction higher or lower on the face compared to others, which when then combined with the new internal structure and weighting might explain some of the difference.
The 770 goes just as far as the stealth & p790 when you play them on course. All forgiving irons. I game the mp32. 20 years old. They’ve got better feel than all these. I carry my 7 iron 145-150. I don’t want a jacked up lofted 7 iron I can hit 170 because of ego. It’s all about feel & feedback for me.
You start off by saying you’ve fitted these between scratch and 20 handicap and finish by saying “possibly” people up to a 12 or 14 handicap could play them as long as a reasonable ball striker?? Strange.
It was TaylorMade who said the original P790's had been fit to players from 0 - 20 handicappers. We've never recommended them to this wide an audience of player. For this particular model as long as you're a reasonable ball striker we can see golfers upto a 12 - 14 handicap playing them. Hope that clarifies.
@@CHuzz7777 Apologies that's a slip of the tongue from Neil. We brief Neil on the story behind products before filming and he's taken that line from what TaylorMade said about the original P790, and put it into his own words. TaylorMade have used the line before to illustrate how wide an audience the original model was fitted too, even though it was never designed for golfers over low double digit handicaps. Hope that clarifies for you.
@@todaysgolfer Okay, fair enough. It’s confusing that TM have 4 irons supposedly aimed at low double digit and below (25% of the market) 1 iron for mid handicapers and 1 iron for slicers who can’t get the ball in the air which combined is about 75% of the market. It’s no wonder the P790 has ended up fitted to a wider range.
@@CHuzz7777 Understand where you're coming from. To be fair at the players' end of the market you need options, which TaylorMade offer. And if you create a model that sits on the fence between mid-handicap and players' irons, which mops up a lot of golfers from both sides, then why wouldn't you? Honestly the P790 has utterly changed TaylorMade's business, the model is the biggest selling forged iron the brand have ever produced (and only part of it is forged).

P790 looks like it's a really sophisticated design in the 7 to 4. Probably the most advanced design along with PXG, Titleist T200 and T150.

The GEN 6 iron is 30 degrees. Your chart is incorrect
Exactly the reason we put the correction in before the video was uploaded Leonard.
Shut up Leonard
No Stealth HD? its litterly the sister iron to the Stealth!
We included the irons that sit either side of the P790. Golfers looking at the HD really shouldn't be considering the P790.
