  • Join me on a vintage jewelry and culinary adventure! In this video we will talk about the invention of Bakelite and it's usage in jewelry and lime Jello! Both are Art Deco period staples, and I though it would be fun to make & taste some recipes straight out of the 1930 Lime Jello cookbook.

    A granny in Australia says...I really enjoyed that little trip through time. Anyone over 60 knows bakelite well. Had I only known that the old stuff I couldn't wait to get rid of was so valuable as vintage! If there had been any jewellery in my family I hope I would have had the good taste to treasure it. In the 50's jelly and fruit was positively gourmet, and watching you trying savoury jelly was a treat!

      This was such a fun video to make - and there will be a sequel (featuring orange) as soon as my schedule allows! I must also replace my ‘taste testing panel’, as my husband quit! 😂

    Great video as usual! Oh, the Jell-O memories. Being a 20th century kid, I can’t remember holidays *without* some form of it!

    🎵polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride 🎶 💚🤣. So clever. The translucent Bakelite is stunning and love the tasty names.. Apple Juice and Lime Jello.
    And your culinary skills are as refined as your jewelry knowledge. Big huge bravo 🙌 to your taste tester 💚

    Great Video, I always love it when our husbands go along with us especially with food "experiment night," I loved the spin on supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. I also have an old Bakelite camera and radio in my collection.

      Hi Mishka! Thanks for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I was grateful he agreed to taste those salads 😂 (I don’t think I’ve ever heard him say “it’s better because of the vegetables” before!) Hang on to that camera & radio - fantastic pieces of history that are getting harder to find 💖

    LOL, that was a fun video! 🤣 The recipes you made with the lime jello reminded me of a jello fruit salad my granny used to make when I was young. Jello, imho, should be made into a dessert dish rather than a savory salad kind of thing.
    Interestingly, Bakelite is still made and used in household items. I just bought a German made non stick frying pan with a lid, and the removable handle and the lid knob are bakelite. Very informative video!!

    My mother in law used to make dump salad which was lime jello, cottage cheese and crushed pineapple. It actually was pretty good. I love your videos Sundae but I might get your hubby some Tums! He's a sport though!

      Hahaha, thanks so much for watching and commenting, Peg! He was a good sport for sure 😂😅💚 My family used to have pineapple and cottage cheese as a summer lunch when we were kids - I can see how lime jello could complement it!

    Your necklace is amazing! Jello reminds me of my grandmother and my mom. Grandma always served jello at lunch when I’d spend the weekend with her. Mom used to make lime jello with bananas and pineapple or red jello with strawberries! I still occasionally make her red jello with strawberries and sore cream layer at Thanksgiving! Lots of jello memories!

    • @sundaebaubles
      @sundaebaubles  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Kim - I love your memories, thanks for sharing them! Ambrosia 'salad' was often served at thanksgiving meals when I lived in the prairies, and I am still confused about whether it was meant to be enjoyed with the main or as a dessert!

      Absolutely understand the YUK sentiment now that I’ve tried a few myself! They are incredibly confusing to the taste buds 🤪
