    The last advice made me feel really emotional because I struggle a lot with having a "healthy adult" lifestyle. As someone who has been working full time home office for the last 2 years, is really hard for me to have healthy habits but I'm trying my best; not only I go to the gym, I started going to the psychologist and nutritionist, I work full time I also I take care of my house and I do the cooking everyday and sometimes It stresses me out trying to keep this habits because all of this takes time and a lot of effort, both physically and mentally. Hearing that is ok to take my time is really comforting for me. I really like your videos and I love that you are so chill and cool Patty, thank you for sharing

      @maddieb.4282 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@twentyonetortas5921 they can do many of the same things but a therapist is usually a medical doctor and a psychologist is not necessarily one. Doctors can prescribe medication and provide talk therapy, while psychologists/counselors who usually have a master’s degree can just provide talk therapy (and other types of therapy). Seeing someone who is not a medical doctor is usually cheaper!

    • @peterdearborn
      @peterdearborn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@maddieb.4282 Minor caveat/correction here if speaking in the US context. A clinical psychologist is a licensed doctor with a Ph.D. Most cannot proscribe meds, but some can with additional training. Psychiatrists are licensed doctors as well and can proscribe meds, but most are MDs that took more training in psych. Therapist is more is more of a loose term and is not bound by licensure in every context. That said, there are many masters level therapists who are licensed in other specific contexts. All of these folks can be useful in a therapeutic context, but you're absolutely correct that it pays to think of what you are looking for and finding the right type of clinician/therapist/etc. for that.

  • @travisgrant1559
    @travisgrant1559 2 ปีที่แล้ว +114

    Something I noticed recently is the people that are more experienced in the gym have surpassed the phase of being disciplined and making themself go to the gym everyday. They go because they really just love training and lifting the weights. Obviously discipline still plays a role on the difficult days but if you struggle going to the gym and really can’t get consistent with it then just keep going and trying different things. People are naturally supposed to want to move so if you hate the training aspect of fitness there is probably an underlying cause. You may not be eating enough, sleeping enough, or just be doing something negative to your hormones (like birth control). Just keep showing up and learning and you will find yourself addicted to training like me. The hard part is everything outside the gym. The gym is like safe vacation where all problems disappear.

    • @aprilmichel7816
      @aprilmichel7816 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Another underlying cause of hatred of fitness might be negative experiences from childhood. If you have classmates laughing at you because you can't do shite, teachers being disappointed but hiding it because 'you're trying' and people quitting on teaching you things because it takes a longer time then they expected, it can really rub off on you. Add in being naturally on the clumsy side and afraid of injuring yourself and you have a person that hadn't worked out since PE stopped being mandatory for them.

      I want to ask something, how would you tackle the topic of fitness to someone with an ed? I want to help my friend but she really is headstrong and a bit stubborn, I don’t want to force it on her (she already exercises but results take a bit long) and I really want to send her this video.

    • @MyUnoriginalLife
      @MyUnoriginalLife 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@nat3299 i dont know if this was addressed to me specifically, but i would recommend you ask your friend about what their goals are in fitness and in their eating disorder - like what are 'results' to them vs. you? exercise can often be an extension of ED behaviors, so is it helping or hindering their recovery (if they are working toward recovery)? ED's are stubborn in themselves and often are self-enforcing, so it can be really difficult to disrupt those patterns if the person isn't on board/in that phase of their recovery.
      sometimes the things we mean as helpful for our friends can be taken in harmful ways regardless of how we intend them- if you're worried about sending them something like this, it never hurts to ask some variation of "hey, i know you have been struggling with this and found a video that feels like it might have some helpful perspective - are you in the space to see something like this right now?" if the answer is yes, sweet, you can talk with them about it and what feels helpful for them about it, and if the answer is no, also cool, what are some helpful things that they could use some support in instead?
      idk how helpful any of this is, but i'm rooting for you and for your friend!

    One of the things I really didn't take into account when eating was tracking calories and macros. When I was 18 I would always skip breakfast and just eat meat and vegetables for lunch. Maybe I would have an apple or some fruit as a snack. And finally my dinner would always be a protein shake and a protein bar. I only realized I was under eating when one day I went to the bathroom and just passed out out of nowhere. My take is : always track what you're eating, because the worst mistake you can do is under/overestimate food

    Hit home with the first tip. I started losing weight by reducing the crap I was eating. Fast food, soda, anything I thought was crap. Dropped about 15 lbs. Loved the results so I started OMAD. I love eating once a day and don't suffer any hunger or weakness. My job isn't a desk job but it's not construction either so it works perfectly for me.
    It wasn't until I dropped about another 25 lbs doing that, went from 215 to 175 over a three year period, that I noticed that I couldn't get rid of the little fat around my stomach. Time to start exercising. As I started doing simple push ups, incline walking on a treadmill, and the like, that fat was still going nowhere but I was getting more toned, not good enough. Time to weight train. Before I got to that though I wanted to make sure I was taking in enough protein, so I started logging all my calories and macros.
    I was shocked to discover that I was taking in less than a thousand calories 5-6 days a week. SHOCKED! I wasn't experiencing any fatigue or weakness, I still looked muscular and hadn't lost any muscle mass that I could recognize. But my metabolism had slowed to a crawl. I started taking in as many calories as I could while eating healthy and only OMAD. I was eating over double what I had been, 1700-2400 calories and I started actually losing weight. I dropped to 170.
    So yeah, you have to find the sweet spot for calories that still allows you to keep your body out of starvation mode and then becomes the exact amount of calories you need without going over what you need. And this is all before you start to really get into weight training or exercise. I'll be honest, it's WAY harder than I thought. Taking in even 2000 calories on OMAD is a struggle most of the time. The high calorie foods are all crap lol. That's why everyone is overweight though. Eating too much is very easy, eating just enough is hard and you might not be able to know what that is without seeing a professional because everyone is different.
    Anyway, sorry for the rant but it was a trap I fell into. Love the tips and thanks for uploading, love your personality and content. 🥰

    I remind myself frequently, "Focus on the process, love the process, the goal is just something that happens along the way."

    I can't even tell you how much this video meant to me to hear you talk about self love and having respect for your body. I'm 35. I spent most of my life beating myself up for my body not looking certain ways. I spent lots of time comparing my body to others. There are so many "body trends" in society that women, especially, have to "follow" in order to fit the beauty standards at the time. It used to be stick thin and a thigh gap that used to be the "in" thing and now, it's an extremely tiny waist with huge boobs, big lips that are usually pumped with filler, nails always done with a huge Kim Kardashian type of butt that's usually obtained by getting a BBL (Brazilian butt lift). Just when you think you have the body that is desired within society and pushed by every social media influencer out there, the body type that's desired, changes. We tend to treat our bodies like the latest fashion trend that we can just take off and change at any given time. Not to mention every celebrity, magazine, TV show or movie putting the same type of pressure on women (mainly) to change our bodies instead of love and accepting them. Everything you said in this video, was directed toward self love and it really helped me to hear you talk in that way. I've suffered with an extreme desire to be thin and even when I got to 89lbs (my lowest), it still wasn't good enough and I still wasn't happy. I still called myself fat. It's also caused immense damage to my body that I think is permanent. Due to being that thin for so long, all of which you mentioned, happened to me-loss of period, no energy (I had to sit down everytime I took a shower), vitamin deficiencies, my hair fell out in clumps and I also destroyed my beautiful teeth that I used to have, from forcing my body to throw up any food that I did eat on the rare occasion that I did actually allow myself to put any calories into my body. That's no way to live. I barely had energy for basic things. Fast forward to two years later, and I'd like to get back into strength training. It's hard for me to wrap my head around how much I'm supposed to eat though for muscle gains. I know how to eat healthy as I have been a vegetarian for 13 years or so, but I'm struggling with how much I'm supposed to actually eat and with the whole protein thing. Switching your focus from starvation mode and self destructive ways to healthy and using food as fuel, is actually very difficult to do. It's like night and day when you have lived a particular way for most of your life. But this video was one of my favorites from you. Just hearing you talk about giving yourself a break, but being hard on yourself or beating yourself up and shifting focus to respect and care for the body is honestly so helpful and inspiring. Thank you!!

      Its really hard to break out of patterns of thinking that we have growing up, especially those concerned with self perception. its a losing battle to ‘fight’ yourself, as much as we may want it, it will never be satisfied. we can only let go.
      of that feeling of control. to work on realistic healthy acceptance. its not ur fault. let go of the guilt and shame and disappointment. in time that will fade. you’ve already past the first step of self awareness, the desire to heal and grow.
      the brains plasticity means that it can be changed. with small consistant effort. building healthy habits, routine, lifestyle. the body adapts quickly. a healthy body will lead to a healthy mind. focus on healing the body, and your confidence, happiness, self-assuredness will follow.
      I’m rooting for you

    Patty - I love this channel and fitness channels like this because it makes the idea of fitness and living a healthy lifestyle so much more accessible, and fun, to everyone. Fitness doesn't need to look a specific, certain way. It is very dependent on individual goals and I don't think enough people realize that. It's not an all or nothing thing. Your advice about 'not letting the fitness journey becoming obsessive' and 'don't let your internal voice be too critical or negative' I think are going to be hugely helpful for beginners and advanced athletes. Thanks for the pearls of wisdom!

    This is what I needed. I finally started my fitness journey about a month ago and I've been going every day for at least 2hrs, sometimes 3 and I started getting discouraged when I've missed a day, thinking I had to go harder and longer the next day. I'm glad I rediscovered you a few days ago, first found out about you about a year ago before I started to get really focused on my health and I'm thankful that you've put a lot into perspective in terms of not having to be insanely trying to reach goals.

    I really relate to being the happiest when I don’t put the gym as my main focus for the day. Having bad workouts or missing workouts happens and you can really beat the hell out of your body by overtraining. I also found when I went to the gym 5-6 times a week every week for months that I had really bad body dysmorphia and would harshly judge people for not taking care of their bodies.

    Love this message. During Covid I started to drop lots of weight (about 4-6 pounds a week when I put my mind to it) and see a change in my body. I haven’t been under 200 pounds since high school so this was great! However, my mind was not at all in the best place nor was I doing it with the right intentions. I had to take a step back to reevaluate why I was doing it and if I was going about it in a truly healthy manner. I’m just now getting around to restarting and I’m trying my best to keep my mind in the right space.

    Good to see you on TH-cam again Patty. Yes this was a big help. Being negative about food and exercise is a big trap. Starving yourself or pushing to much in the gym is counterproductive. Consistent diet and exercise over the long run is key. Chowing down when you are hungry every now and then or having a slack day of exercise or an extra day off is not going to blow the whole thing. If you ever need help with your body dysmorphia I would be glad to provide positive reinforcement.

    It’s funny you ended with “if it wasn’t helpful, I’m sorry,” because this has been so incredibly helpful. For you it’s a chill sit down and talk as you stretch video, but I’m gonna write this so you know what impact you can create without realising it.
    I’m on a 3-month health program to get fit, and I’m fumbling so much. I hit the ground running with it and was doing so good, but a month in, I’m slacking - I’m having too many cheat meals, I am missing gym more often than not and today I woke up feeling so tired and sluggish and had another cheat meal that I’m gonna hide from my trainer. BUT everything you said catering to the emotional aspect of putting yourself through this journey was so helpful. And so kind. Especially coming from someone who looks as stunning and strong as you. It makes me wanna not be so hard on myself and loosen my grip on the “timelines” I have in my head.
    So, thank you so much. I loved this video. I’m new to your long-form videos, and they’re even better than your already cool shorts. You’re amazing. ❤️

Once I got to a decent weight I started weight training and I could barely do 135 on the bench press. As of today I can do 4 sets of 10 with 135 on the bench. I maxed out at 185 with 5 reps. I have struggled with my body for a long time, and sometimes I still do. Recently, I signed up for a gym with the hope that by going there regularly, I will start to accept myself and my body more. My goal is not only to change my body but also to become generally healthier and maybe build a healthier relationship with food over time. However, it has gotten worse again recently. I find myself skipping meals and covering my mirror to avoid seeing my reflection. I am really worried about slipping back into extremes.
    Hearing that you have had similar experiences and talking about the importance of balance and not skipping meals gives me immense strength and motivation to keep going to the gym, even though I find the atmosphere there competitive and begrudging sometimes, I have hopes that, eventually, it’ll get better

    I will allow myself to ad one: take recurent pain seriously. If your back or any articulation hurts, if your body feels unbalanced, go see a doctor. I can’t emphasize how useful getting help from a professional is with problems like this. They can undermine your fitness journey, and even cause greater injuries.
    I know it’s hard to ask for help sometimes, or that not everybody has the option to do it, but if you need it and you can, go for it.

    Everyone builds differently, my biceps and chest builds very quickly, so I focus on other muscle groups more so I don't become off-kilter. My stomach builds fat quickly and the only way I can get lean is too cut out almost all carbs. The only high carb thing I can allow while I am lean is rice. I usually just mess with the diet, never saw any results from the protein bars any additives like that. It's really about high protein and not eating things that disturb the livers function, like gmo's or high sugar intake. If you eat most of your carbs in veggies and most of your protein in meats like fish or beef, the natural fats help develop lean tissue and that's what people want. Getting your body lean and keeping it lean is a goal, but overall health is the most important part. And I like how you discussed that in this video. Peace...

    I just started working out again after a few months of just decaying in my room. I'm a teen so I felt like before school starts back up, it would be a good idea to take up a workout routine. I used to exercise for all the wrong reasons so I stopped. My mental state isn't any better (tbh it's worse since covid and changing to online school) but I know why I want to workout. I don't just want to look like a TikTok chick, I want to actually feel strong and be able to be proud of the effort I put into something. It's difficult at times but I'm trying my best. I may not be the model student I was before, but I can start to change to be a better verison of myself. Perhaps starting with my mental issues would have been the most logical first step, but I'm not a very logical person. Feel good and liking the way I look makes me feel ready to accept change in other subjects of life, like my schoolwork and state of mind. It's a start, that's for sure. Thank you for this video, your a really cool person and I definitely gained a lot of insight

    I have always viewed food similar to fuel like you have said. Even if your car is idling, it's still going to use gas. You wouldn't get gas after a road trip you would get it beforehand. I view eating/exercise similarly. Also it really helped light the fire under my booty is I stopped personifying my body. I started seeing it like a machine. It doesn't have feelings, I am projecting that onto it. I am the one with the feelings. I have to take care of my body and feeling what my body is feeling helps me do that, but I'm not hurting my body or making it mad at me by making it do work. I don't know if that will resonate with anyone else but helped me

    My problem was trying to be really lean when I first started lifting, so for about the first two years I barely grew any muscle.
    I was eating like 1700 calories whilst working out and going to school, just starving myself trying to be low body fat.
    It didn’t work and I also didn’t gain much muscle.
    But I changed and started eating in the mid 2000 range or more (depending on my activity levels) and I’ve grown so much yet stayed relatively lean.
    I just wish I understand that I need to eat more and that being lean isn’t about under eating like crazy.

      Setting the bar too high can really be an awful way to demotivate oneself, when the truth is that even two workouts a week can create huge progress for beginners, and three meaningful workouts can include things done at home to bring up the frequency from 1 or 2 gym sessions. Any little bit can be enough of a difference from nothing at all to be worthwhile and get one started.

    Thank you for this video Patty! I’m hoping you can do some story time videos about how you adjust to the nutrition and protein intake needed to be healthy when you workout a lot. That’s something that I’ve been interested in recently. You are so inspiring and positive, and I love your videos! So thank you 😊

    Thanks for sharing. The one thing I wish I knew beforehand, is that the skin on my shoulders and hips would flippin' burst when I started working out at 14, because now I'm stuck with the stretch marks. How you perceive your own body is a very tricky thing - I have people telling me I look good, but I just can't believe it (after all, only one of them actually sees me nude). I don't always focus on it, but when I do, it feels bad.
    Don't be like me! Btw, I don't have IG and stuff, so I don't know what people tell you there, but from what little I've seen of you, you're very pretty - remember that if you're ever in doubt.

      i know sometimes certain physical attributes that society tells us is unappealing can be hard to accept (for me it's cellulite) but if it's any consultation at all, like 99% of the population has stretch marks and/or cellulite....so th media propaganda that it's unnatural is simply manipulation and any one who judges you for it can suck butt

    You are the cutest human being I've ever seen in my whole life! Great insights, awesome outlook and really well articulated while somehow still being a totally loveable goofball. Love your energy and I hope you keep on killin' it in the future!

    Honestly, part of the joy of working out is learning new things, imho. Just recently, for example, I finally understood how to bench properly ... after like 8 years of working out. It's super nice that there is always something to work on, something to improve at, and some new insights to gain
