I'm a huge sim/park fan so I'm very excited for this. The fact that it's grid-based is a little disappointing... so many amazing titles recently are breaking away from gridded gameplay (Foundation, Manor Lords, Planet Coaster/Zoo) and it really allows for some great customizability and replay-ability. I know that's unlikely to change at this point, but I'm still hopeful that customizability will be present. It's amazing that this is a love letter to Theme Hospital, Evil Genius (games I adored) etc, but sims have come on so much since then that I'm not sure plopping down rides, benches and trash cans is enough now. I hope this doesn't sound too negative, I'm very excited to watch the development of the project and seeing where it goes, I just really hope it finds its place in the modern sim genre :)
Yep, completely understand - we're big fans of modern SIM games too 🙂 We're a much smaller team than the games you mention, so sticking to a grid means we have the opportunity to create more content than if we invested all of our resources in deformable meshes. You can customize your park with decorations and architecture from a whole host of human eras, though we're not planning individual building customization like you see in some AAA sim games. Think Timberborn, Prison Architect, Settlement Survival, etc

one of the most fun things about Rollercoaster Tycoon was the ability to make rides that didn’t work or killed park goers. is there any chance we will see this implemented in the game as an actual feature? it’d be a ton of fun to create rides with the intention of making them as brutal/creative as possible for the entertainment of Martians
@@ExCRT Kind of 🙂 In Mars Attracts, rather than designing rides you design enclosures for your human captives. You can try to make them pleasing to the humans, or they can be brutal prisons just focused on keeping the human secure
I’ll suggest a few ideas. - Acid Bath Dunk Tank - Human Bungee Jumping (Martians jumping out of a human statue’s mouth) - The DMV line (curious to know if you can piss off the visitors to the point they have a violent outburst since they’re Martians)
Question 2 any plan for other stuff. Maybe plan later a dinosaur attack dlc. Or other tops stuff like a garbage pail kids dlc ( again If this game was finish and you plan to do dlc ) Question 3 other then human and Martian and other animal what other creature will you have? For example Will you that woman thing from Tim Burton movie or other aliens.
Right now we just have the rights to Mars Attacks, so would need to chat to Topps about any of their other brands. Focus for the moment is making the Early Access version as good as it can be so we haven't explored other collaborations yet :) The characters are either human or Martian for now, though humans come from lots of different eras/locations so someone abducted from Ancient Rome will be very different to another abducted from Feudal Japan (for example).

As mentioned in the video, we don't own Mars Attacks so weren't looking for a game type to just reskin with the IP. We were interested in a specific gameplay concept that we hadn't seen before - a reverse zoo with humans as exhibits - and then pitched that concept to the owners of Mars Attacks. Reskinning existing games with a different IP doesn't make it a better game - often you're better just playing the existing game :)
The gameplay idea (reverse zoo with humans as the exhibits) came first, then we started talking to Topps about the Mars Attacks IP. We always tend to lead with an interesting gameplay concept, because if you go 'IP then work out gameplay' you'll often end up with clunky or generic feeling gameplay. It takes years to build a game so we want to work on things we think are really cool, quirky, and fun to play, not just a tie-in with an IP (even though we do love Mars Attacks!)
To be honest, I feel this fits much better. Sure, blasting humans or aliens is always cool, but Mars Attacks whole identity is based on being just a bit different and not taking itself too seriously while having fun with it, so a human theme park is exactly the kind of sadistic mischief that fits perfectly into the universe of Mars Attacks

We're currently working on a Prohibition-era human enclosure, so there may or may not be old neon signage decorations coming 😉

One question Why a theme park Sims. Not say fps or open world game?
The gameplay idea (reverse zoo with humans as the exhibits) came first, then we started talking to Topps about the Mars Attacks IP. We always tend to lead with an interesting gameplay concept, because if you go 'IP then work out gameplay' you'll often end up with clunky or generic feeling gameplay. It takes years to build a game so we want to work on things we think are really cool, quirky, and fun to play, not just a tie-in with an IP (even though we do love Mars Attacks!)

Sure, blasting humans or aliens is always cool, but Mars Attacks whole identity is based on being just a bit different and not taking itself too seriously while having fun with it, so a human theme park is exactly the kind of sadistic mischief that fits perfectly into the universe of Mars Attacks
