    Phil, I've noticed in almost every saw cutting video you using the bumper spikes to try and speed your cuts. They are just to help prevent kickbacks, not to force the saw to cut faster. Your bogging the chain down doing this and not going to get an accurate cut comparison between two saws doing this. It will also dull your chain faster using it the way you are. Just full throttle it, keep saw parallel to ground the whole cut and let the saw do its work.

      The dogs on a saw are not there to prevent kickback. They are there to help the saw cut faster. Dogging the saw will make it work harder. Just don't overwork it. It is also not going to dull the chain faster.

    • @goshen574
      @goshen574 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like to give the bar a bit of room between the wood and the engine, not much about an inch, just so it can spit out the crap (so yeah I don’t use the “bumper” “dog” or whatever you want to call them, I just use the weight of the saw, apply even steady pressure , pay attention to the pitch of the saw (make sure it’s not getting bogged down) and run it full throttle but that’s just me.
      I’ve noticed everyone has a preference and everyone has a favorite, soffre,ford,Buick,etc etc
      Personally I like Japanese lol

    As I only do garden maintenance, I don't use chainsaws that much, I do take down the odd tree now and then, but I generally use one for logging firewood. Bought myself a Husqvarna 455 Rancher a couple of years ago and it's been excellent for my needs!

    Good comparison video. Thanks
    The vanguard chain that come on the ranchers is trash! My Echo cs590 took 8-10 tanks before it woke up, and prefer it more than my 460 rancher. Both are good firewood saws. But will take the Echo Timberwolf with magnesium case bolt-on cylinder any day over the Husqvarna Rancher plastic clamshell.
    Echo

    The chain on the echo and the new “pro” chain are also reduced chickback chains, just a different style. They have the additional bumper links next to the depth gauge(raker). A standard chain will have no additional bumper links next to the rakers.

    I was a Stihl guy through and through but last year I realized Husqvarna and Stihl don't make anything close the CS590 in value (ie; a 60cc pro-grade saw with a split crankcase that will pull a 24" bar). Both companies have saws as good and better but you won't get your hands on one for under $800.
    On top of that, swap out the muffler & coil, and open up the exhaust and you have a CS620p

    I run a CS-590 and cut 4-5 cords of firewood a season. I noticed your Echo was running a little rich and losing RPM as a result. Either your filter is dirty or you will want to lean out the high speed needle just a bit.

    My brand new 455 Rancher has leaked bar oil since the first tank full. My new Echo CS490 doesn't leak any at all, and it's over a year older saw. All my huskys leak bar oil. Husky 66, husky 455, and husky 141... tried everything to fix the leaks, now i either pour the oil back in jug, or store the saws on their side with bar on the top. My echos use less bar oil since they are clutch driven and not crankshaft driven.

    Hi Phil - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I found this most interesting, especially as I told you I have just purchased a 455 to replace my retired 365. You confirmed my decision and I am confident the 455 will fulfil my reduced production needs. Over here the Echo is 40% more expensive at $1040 for no increase in output. I always use an Oregon semi chisel version of the new full chisel chain you bought. When I'm bucking I get the most consistent cutting by just rocking the saw slighly while keeping it horizontal and not using the dogs so the weight of the saw lets the teeth find their own bite while maintaining maximum revs - I also feel it puts less pressure on the clutch as the chain seldom jams.

      @@Rob-tl9md Hi Rob - Big Rodders again. It's all a question of cost versus usage and value for money. Plus, and crucially for me, the 365 over here is now computerised and after my experiences with Autotune on the 555, another great saw when it started, there was no way I was getting a computerised saw again. I have gone from doing 180 cords a year with the 365 & 555 down to 20 so at my age I couldn't justify the additional expenditure. Provided the 455 proves reliable I will be the happiest squirrel in the woodpile!

    I use the spikes to guide the saw and not put extra pressure on the cut. I do a lot of what you are doing by reaching to the other side to finish the cut up or down in front of me depending on the pressure. I often wonder if we didn’t have the epa interference we would have much lighter saws that are manufactured to get optimal performance out of their two cycle engines. There is no reason why we can’t have 6hp out of a saw that size.

The difference you're seeing in the amount and distance of chips being being thrown is due to differences between the chains (wear and sharpness & height of the rakers). I love my CS-590 and think it's a great deal for $400, but I can';t tell ya anything about the Husky, 'cause I've never had one (I almost did buy a Rancher..but opted for the Echo instead, mainly due to it being a much better value).

      It’s mostly what I run is the echo 590. Longer stroke on these saws. Lots of torque. Keep a sharp chain and crank on it a bit it’ll stay full tilt pulling a full 20” cut. Almost impossible to lean them up for some reason. Something funky with the carbs. They have a hugely oversized carb for a 59 cc from what I gather.

    • @TractorTech
      @TractorTech 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joleylight300 Stroke does not increase torque, cubic inch does. Increasing bore has the same effect as increasing stroke.
      Carb size has nothing to do with rich or lean. You could take a carb of a 30cc saw and put it on this saw and it would run fine, just down on power. You could take a carb off of a 90cc and put on this saw and it would run fine, maybe pic up power. I have a 64cc saw with a carb from a 90cc saw on it. Carbs work off of the venturi effect. Personally I like echo instead of the other two (husq and Stihl) because it just doesn’t whine as much. The hutch pitch, which most don’t care about, is SERIOUSLY annoying for me so I like the fact it generates a “lower” pitch when cutting.
    As far as the way tit cuts compared to the other two names mentioned. At a certain point they’re all the same.
    The differences are the Bella and whistles, which as a homeowner I don’t care about.
    The one thing I can tell you is that the better names, like the three mentioned here (Stihl, husq, echo) tend to be more balanced than cheaper names so that is a serious plus when cutting (used a cheaper saw and compared it to those three and it was complete difference in behavior of the saw, it didn’t violently vibrate to the point where it caused hand/arm fatigue and I never complain even post cancer surgery)
    As far as chains. Look at sticking with better chains that are geared for the type of wood and weather conditions maple chains cut harder wood better depending on bar length and some even operare better in colder weather than others, and there are quite a few, such as Gil skip, semi skip, half chisel, full chisel, and everything in between.
    Also, noticed that Stihl bar oil is best for all around cutting and it tends to do a better job than the cheaper stuff
    ONE BIG NOTE:
    Lucas 2 Stroke engine oil and sea foam helped ALOT, and I’m not kidding it helped ALOT, with the smell, and carbon discharge from the engine.
    I will never run a saw without those two added with higher octane fuel sbeccasse I feel it just runs better overall, starts up and heats up faster and nicer and I have less headaches overall.
    Oh yeah and sea foam has the nice additional attribute that it is a fuel stabilizer, so if you don’t use fuel for about a month I you don’t have to worry about it.
    Try those things out and tel me what you think. I think with Stihl Barbour, Lucas 2stroke and sea foam with better gas, you will notice it too😊😊

    The echo chain is definitely an Oregon chain too it looks the same as the new one on the husky

    The 455 sounds like the high throttle adjustment is a little low.

  • @ec6052

    That bar is plenty long to cut straight down through that log, would give better and more realistic times than running the saw around the log..

    Echos chain is also a safety chain if it's what came on your saw.

    The chain on the echo is oregon. It's stamped on the side links.

      I could see that, but wasnt sure if it was the exact model of chain. Oregon has numerous types of chains listed on their site.

    Try full throttle 2seconds before you start into the log then don't let off full throttle until cut is done

    That 590 is running too rich. That's holding it back. I have both saws and the 590 stomps the 455.

    Factory sharpened chains are done terribly.
    I learned that they don’t do a good job sharpening them and that when you put a new chain on, always sharpen it yourself. I think they do it on purpose for some kind of liability, just a guess

    Please tighten the chain on your echo. Evertime I loose one it's because it is loose. You should be just fine doing. But.... better safe than sorry.

  • @ellenorbovay5226
    @ellenorbovay5226 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To do the comparison correctly you should use two new chains, exact same brand and type of chains, one on each saw. Hand sharpening a chain completely ruins the comparison, there is no way to know if you sharpened it correctly. You would also need to use the same gas, and even then it depends on how you cut, how hard you push and if you keep the motor at its peak horsepower. I have a Husky and its been fairly reliable but its gotten a little difficult to start after 20 years. The Echo doesn't seem to be running right in this video.

    • @FlatCreekOutdoors
      @FlatCreekOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah, I don't really care about being super-precise with it. I knew the echo should have been ahead of the husky. This is the real world, and this shows in the real world there's not as much difference between the two saws as some might expect.

    590 avg. Is actually 10.75 because of tree being smaller and the last two cuts shown were even with husky's last two on new chain. Cant combine all four cuts on 590 and get a accurate avg. like that.

    On my farm ive ran husqvarna up until a week ago. They are plastic junk! The handle broke..... plastic. The the safety stop broke.... plastic. Instead of trying to find ebay replacement parts i put that under powered 455 in the scrap pile where it belongs. Picking up an old rebuilt mcculloch tonight.

    i like the oregon pro chains they cut nice but in my experience the husqvarna chains cut just as well but are a bit more durable but also more expensive i also prefer a 24 inch bar over the 20 the saw seems to have plenty of power for it and its a great length for bucking.i did hog out the muffler a little and it seems to make it run just a little better

    You seem like a nice guy, however ever you seem to have little knowledge of saw chain, as none of those are professional chains. Also you are bogging the saws by means of the bumper spikes, that's not what they are for. also, the 455 clearly is in need of some carb tuning. over all, I think this video is a total fail.

    • @FlatCreekOutdoors
      @FlatCreekOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thx for the feedback. pro chains or not, each saw got the same chain for the test so its a pretty fair real-world comparison.

    Only way to get a 455 to perform is to convert it to lo pro 16" go up a tooth on the sprocket.. run full chisel or skip tooth
