These Logs Cost Over $5000!
มุมมอง 1.4Kปีที่แล้ว
After doing some excavation on our property we ended up with a large stack of logs for firewood and other projects. Most of this firewood will get processed into firewood for our growing firewood business, but some of it is nice enough for lumber. With the seasonal timing, I'm focused on splitting soft woods that will dry out this season - especially maple and poplar.

Short on Time - Cut A Little, Split A Little

Focusing little by little on growing my firewood business, I can't be slowed down by a dull chainsaw. I threw a new chain on the Echo CS-590 and sawed a bunch of oak and hickory firewood.
Nothing is Ever As Easy As It Should Be

Got the tractor in the woods today to skid out some standing dead firewood logs. These oak trees have been dead at least one season and there is a lot of good firewood here. The Kubota L3901 did a great job skidding the logs out of the woods where we can buck them up and process into firewood.
This is Holding Back My Firewood Business
มุมมอง 3.1Kปีที่แล้ว
I have been fortunate enough to double my firewood business each of the past few years, and I'm on pace to do that again this year, but there's one big thing holding me back from increasing my production (which has been my biggest bottleneck in growing my business). To increase firewood production, I feel the time has come to quick stacking firewood to season. The firewood stacks look good, but...

Everyone Said We Needed One of These

This has been years in the making and so many people have said we need a sawmill on the property. We've made the investment in the Woodland Mills HM130 Max portable sawmill so we can supply lumber for personal and farm projects. In this video we'll get the sawmill assembled and use it for the first time.

Firewood Deliveries in the New Truck (Nissan Titan XD)
มุมมอง 1.5Kปีที่แล้ว
Our for the first firewood deliveries in the new truck. The 2018 Nissan Titan XD is a big step up from my Nissan Frontier. I'm able to haul more and make more deliveries in one trip than ever before. For 2023, I'm looking to double my firewood business and having a larger, more capable truck is an important piece to help reach that business goal.
These Logs Need To Disappear

This pile of firewood logs needs to move along in their firewood journey. In this video I'll buck up a bunch, move some to the splitter, split some, and keep the firewood production moving.
Buyer's Remorse. Sold the F-250. What I Bought Instead.
มุมมอง 2.4Kปีที่แล้ว
After less than 2 months I got rid of the F-250 and bought a different truck that will be my work truck AND my daily driver. I've been looking for a heavy duty truck for a while and came across an older F-250 with low mileage and tasteful upgrades. I thought it would be perfect, but as it turned out, I hated driving it. The ride was rough and it was too noisy. After some research, I settled in ...
A Great Day To Be In The Woods

Out collecting firewood in the woods today. I cut up, split and stacked some of a red oak tree that I cut down last year. After cutting wood with the Husqvarna 455 Rancher, it was loaded on the Kubota L3901 and hauled back up to the Wolfe Ridge Pro 28c compact commercial log splitter.

I have (2) Kobalt 80-volt 18" Bar Chainsaws and use (2) 5 AH Batteries. I’m 79 and love NO more having to pull a cord to start a gas-powered chainsaw. My first 80-volt 18" Bar Chain saw with a 5-AH Battery and charger was $400 in Jul 2021. it is still being sold on the Lowes website as of 5/26/2024 - I use them on our Southeast LA farm of 18 acres of tall large pine trees that were devastated by a Hurricane and tornado. On 10 acres of the property, nearly all the trees are down or dead. My chainsaws have been working great and cutting huge logs and trees and logs up to 20"+ and it works great. I also use the 80-volt 10” Pole saw, lawnmower, and Leaf Blower.

I love my Kobalt Pole Saw - 80-volt - 5-ah battery - 10" Bar - 6 ft / 8ft foot Pole Saw. No cable. Using an Oregon Bar and Chain. I have been using it for more than 3 years now. It works great on my southeast Louisiana farm clearing property that a hurricane went through and trashed all the trees in the woods of our 20-acre farm. I carry it all over our woods and the battery lasts a long time. Today I'll be cutting a 6-inch limb off of a tree out front.

I use the spikes to guide the saw and not put extra pressure on the cut. I do a lot of what you are doing by reaching to the other side to finish the cut up or down in front of me depending on the pressure. I often wonder if we didn’t have the epa interference we would have much lighter saws that are manufactured to get optimal performance out of their two cycle engines. There is no reason why we can’t have 6hp out of a saw that size.

Poplar is not allways so loved where I live (europe) same with willow. As people prefer hardwoods like oak. Personally I like it as it gives of allot of heat quickly. So its good to burn in the first bit to get the stove up to temp. Then I burn it mixed with other hardwoods. If you got a swedish soapstone woodstove its even preferred to burn poplar, pine and willow. As it burns hard and quick getting the mass up to temp. You basically need to light it only 1 or 2 times a day to keep a decent temp in the home

Moisture meter reads will vary as you show. Here's what we've done for a few decades heating near 100% to check on the seasoning without meters. 1. Stack under cover. No tarps, just hard top covers so the stack can breathe. 2. Give the stacks at least 6 months to dry. 3. Splits should show both end cracks and a gray or dark color. 4. Two splits knocked together should 'ring' like a bat. And of course if the splits sizzle in the fire, you know you've screwed up. Simple. Works. Low tech, common sense.

It definitely does not heat like most hardwoods like oak, maple, beech or ash but like you said usually goes pretty tall without a ton of branches so easy to cut up and it splits great. If I were still selling firewood I would not sell it and if I was buying it I would not want it sold to me. I have an outdoor boiler and have lots of pine and other softwoods available so I consider poplar good wood for me even though I do burn quite a bit of better hardwoods.

My brother just bought a piece of land dotted with poplar. Him and I bucked up a storm damaged one (maybe down for a year) and split it this past September. The moisture is around 20% at this time and it seems to burn alright. Better than pine and it's free. No complaints here.

I was a Stihl guy through and through but last year I realized Husqvarna and Stihl don't make anything close the CS590 in value (ie; a 60cc pro-grade saw with a split crankcase that will pull a 24" bar). Both companies have saws as good and better but you won't get your hands on one for under $800. On top of that, swap out the muffler & coil, and open up the exhaust and you have a CS620p

Question in in Florida but I have a wood rack and and I always keep my wood covered with a wood cover that is made from grill cover material. I always keep the entire rack of wood covered top and sides . Would my wood season better if I only cover the top of the rack and keep the sides open, my concern being in Florida is during the summer months the humidity and rain which is why I always kept the entire rack covered. Thanks for any info you can give me
