Inspiration for the Puzon Wilderness Bowie by Dave Puzon (Owner and funder of Positive Made LeatherCraft ).
Inspiration for this blade came from many places, and I wanted something that would fit in on the hip of the Alamo defenders and your hip if you were out with the Dutch looking to save some hostages but run into the predator; the inspiration for it came from the bolo knife that was issued to the Filipino soldiers in ww2, Rambo, Daniel Boone, Kit Carson, and Jim Bowie.
I wanted a blade that would help build a shelter, skin, butcher game, and fend off an attack, basically the knife of my childhood heroes, the one that the hero of the story would carry, the one that would help you get back home.
Interesting! It's not a super steel. Closer to plain carbon steel. But should endure more. Tip is thin for that size and thickness. Heat treated soft as per bending. Every bend and straightening loses half of the strength. I don't know why people think that soft is good as one can straighten it after a bend. Make it hard and it won't bend and needs more force to break. About the handle, I have a thought. As a water quenched steel it should be quenched fast. SO I think they quenched just the blade and the handle remained soft. Under stress soft breaks because of the carbides. Bad combo. Interesting, it is.
wow, amazing, i need to pin your comment!!!!
thats a perfect analyse!
Are you serious it's not a supersteel ? From $800 to $1200 Canadian $ what am I paying for I thought was a supersteel all the time for that price.
Under stress, soft breaks? Youre totally wrong.... sorry...
@@somaloignoto2988 It's a low alloy steel. Should be a little tougher than 1080 but no bragging rights. Just because it's Japanese doesn't make it better than simple carbon steels.
I have the very same knife and I haven't had any problems out of it. I understand your torture test to find a knifes breaking point. Now I will be receiving the WTG V44X tomorrow and I'll be using it for a week in the national forest just like I used the 7" Puzon Wilderness Bowie. I have no reason to stab a log to death, baton a tree, or dismember a car with a knife. But I love watching your videos to see how tough a blade is. Keep them coming your videos are great!!!
ok cool! i need test another one!
@@joex your test was great I know what level of hard use I can use a knife or the Puzon Wilderness 7" at. 👍
@@brazzy1467I really want a V44x, thats an awesome bowie!! Excellent choice sir!
I want that x44 pretty badly
snapping makes sense if you consider the overall blade geometry. big fat front heavy blade and a drilled hole right at a weak point in the handle were a lot of the stress from abuse causes micro fractures around the drilled hole.. wondering if the hole was drilled, milled or laser cut. this method of a full fat tang with losts of holes drilled to make it lighter and give screw access makes a tang very very weak.
Holy shit!! Snapped inside the handle?! Wow. I did not see that coming.
me neither!!!
This knife really impressed me 100%. The edge held up to everything Joe could throw at it. It was still able to be sharpened and used in a survival situation. even after the break. Unlike some of the other knives I have seen him destroy. A crude handle could be fabricated or used as a spear very easily. The tip was a lot stronger than most also especially with as thin of a profile that it looks like it has. Joe could not break it until he drove it down in the log with a brick far enough for leverage to be on his side. Thats more than likely where the stress crack originally formed to make it break. From the strikes with the brick. I now see why these WTG knives are so sought after. Not only to they pass the tests with the wood that they are designed for. They also pass the Joe X destruction tests pretty well also. Any other real knife person that had any knowledge of knives and metallurgy would agree. Joe X is very enjoyable to watch but most of these knives he is testing has survived tests in useful scenarios for many years and still going strong. Those zombie hunters on here waiting for the day they will use their super zombie slayer knife approved by Joe X might be waiting for a long time.
cool, but there are Zombies here already, u just dont know it yet!
@@joex💯. Come to America and watch the leftists. Zombies every where.
Now that's one mean looking blade.
After the excellent performance of that chopping thing expectations are high for this one.
they sure are!!!!
Thanks for the WTG testing! Big disappointment with this blade. The other two did great.
u are welcome!
Happy New Year Joe X - Joe is always stronger than the knife. Your tests are tests for real man!
thanks a lot my swiss friends!
Do not drill a hole at the narrowest point of the tang.
exaclty!!!
I agree!!! I commented at length on that presumably creating a weak point. I'm surprised more haven't broken there. But I'd expect the break to come on the brick or iron rod.
Joe,
You created a bunch of Work Tuff Gear fanboys then you $hat all ovee them.
@@alwayson999 👍🤟
@@alwayson999 wtg is still amazing. the hemlock ares and the wilson for example won't have this problem because they dont have the drill hole at the narrowest point.

I’ve always said that putting the screw holes in the thinnest part of a handle is a terrible idea. I don’t know why they do this on many knives. And look. That’s right where it fails 😂👍 good stuff brother
ecactly, thats so bad!!! and they doing it on purpose or what!
Not on all of them….
@@wellregulated8725 the fact that any of them do is too many
@@peterbiltknifeguy easy fix, just need to move hardware locations. But this is probably the first to break like this.

Great destructtest. Epic start 2024
thanks a lot!
Tip Tests are largely dependent on geometry. Work Tuff knows their stuff for steel and heat treat
but they dont know where to put the screws in!
@@joex that’s definitely a design issue.
These work tough knives are (usually) impressive especially for the money. I knew this wouldn't take as much as the other one just due to the blade shape but this crazy to snap at the handle.
Also i love that all your camera mounts are the indestructible cold steel shovels hahaha
Ares and JX5 did pretty good!
Another big dollar knife bites the dust!
yes, i am still sad.... NOT
Can't wait for the WTG people see this lol
me too!
@devinawe6957 Most of the WTG people understand blade geometry and able to choose which knife is best suited for the job.
The only knives that survive Joe are designed to survive Joe. The Ares is a hatchet disguised as a knife, the Tom Brown tracker is just a smaller version of that, and the other one that survived was especially made for Joes tests. This knife not surviving does not speak to its toughness in real world applications.
Damn. I thought it was holding up pretty good till it broke at the handle. Dammit
yeah me too bro!
Holly shit. Did not expect that. Thanks Joe.
yeah, fkd!
Work Tuff makes strong knives. I want one.
ok cool!"
Thanks Joe X. Love your enthusiasm.
Always a pleasure watching, brother. I own 2 of these blades. Purchased these out purely for hunting zombies.
From watching your hard review. I’m no expert, but this blade could possibly be improved by widening the handle overall. Especially closer to the blade. Like the comfort of the handle design in hand, but from your hardcore review this has compromised durability.
Appreciate the time you take to create these entertaining reviews. Cheers brother 🥃
Thanks for the €€€🤟🤟🤟🤟
Frohes neues Jahr !! Them Work Tuff knives seem to be very hardcore in "extreme" use ! I did not expect this 👍👍 I have one suggestion for your channel: Include a "Use Knife as Screwdriver" test ;-)
ok danke!
good idea!
Strange performance.... Great destructtest Joe x. Nice preachin....
thanks a lot! i think i can work for the church now!
Mega gutes Video mal wieder!
@@joex
24:53 Well well well how the tables have turned.
No perfect record for anybody, and snapping the tang while prying on the tip is pretty embarrassing.
I'd still take a WTG over a Busse but trying to choose a "best knife" is pretty much impossible.
WTG over Busse all the time!!!
I actually thought this blade was gonna be comparable to the Hemlock Ares but I stand corrected, AGAIN!!! Few Knives are safe from Joe's clutches. Another one bites the dust. No excuse for a $350 SURVIVAL knife to fail tip test.
Good one Joe. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Love to see this Email from them on this blade.
HAPPY NEW YEAR WORK GEARZ!!!
Got alot of explaining to do in 2024.
thanks, if they have balls they will email me , thern i will post it, but i think they wont!
@samkuhns149 You do realize that the Ares is twice the thickness of this knife, don't you? It is designed to baton and chop. This knife is designed for processing game and general tasks. Completely different blade geometry. And where are you paying $350? Sounds like you are getting screwed more than once.
Probably very few blades would be able to compare to the ares
@@charlesdavis3923 Axe? :D
Then maybe shortly all their blades won't be sold out lol
I am terrified now because I love this series of blades!
ok this will be hard to watch then!
Why are you terrified? The blade shoud do the tasks you need. So, if you want to have a blade, that didn't brake in Joex's tests, buy an axe-head.... this wiill survive, i promis ;-)
The handle is very stiffly constructed so its no wonder that it broke near the bolt section.
The geometry of the knife doesnt allow for the tip to survive. Ares basicly was bullnosed at the tip so no wonder it survived. This one is another story and I'd say defaulted.. The steel gave in its elastic limit was very low and it snappe in two pieces.. 🤷🏻♂️ Interesting to hear what the company says about this.
if WTG mails me, i will post it!!
Holly crap Joe, be careful man!
will do not!

I Never saw a Tang Break. Very Strange…
My goodness..😱
exactly!
It may be an individual difference, but I didn't expect the tang to break on the tip test.
i need to get another one, WTG should send me one!
Hi Joe.
I have seen many of your videos.
Please be careful when you bend the knives ( like you did at 23:10 ) . If you stab yourself in the armpit, you could die within 3 minutes.
Take care of yourself.
If it's a stab in the artery, it's more like 20s.

I am surprised to read in the comments that so many people still want to buy this knife after such an embarasing performance. Cheap Cold Steel machetes lasted much longer for a fraction of the price.
yeah weird! WTG Fanboys maybe?
It has the looks. Good for collection to impress friends.
AWESOME , KEEP GOING BROTHER !!!!
MARLBORO!
In my opinion that failure was unacceptable but I believe had less width of the metal the absorb the shock and it broke where the pin it was supposed to be so that's just my two cents
yeah it broke at this pin! so weird!
Personally, I would prefer to pay a percentage leas for the Puzon as perhaps it is more perfect than the Pusse.. but only a pansie would pick a pocket full of posies instead of picking the Pusse.
Peter Piper picked a pack of pickled peppers.. then went out on purpose to purchase some Pusse.. and it wasnt pretty.
u got that right!
Batoning Joe x style!

I cant forgive the tang breaking like that.
If it had broken anywhere in the blade, id be cool
Thats a deal breaker for me
it truly is shit!
The heat treatment is perfection.
thats true!
what are you talking about?
This one was shit. It's just a simple carbon steel.
My paint scraper has better flexxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I didn’t think it did so bad considering the blade is width is 4.5mm which is pretty thin! A gerber strong arm is 5mm thick and a lot stouter blade
it did good till it broke!

Drill hole break?!? Interesting AND unusual...

Damn dude... Watch that brachial artery! 😳
as long as it is on camera!!!! cheers for stopping by!!!!
NB, the batoning took more time than usual so it must have contributed a bit to the failure. But anyway it's a useful lesson for the dimensioning, and maybe the critical position of that drilled hole.

Thanks for sharing your video Joe , happy new year 🎉

Second point. Joe, I have often mentioned that the one thing your awesome tests do not reveal is uniformity of production quality. For that, one would have to test and break multiple copies of each model, from different production runs. The Ontario SP6 was one of the best Ontarios when you tested it but broke for some other TH-cam guy doing simple bushcraft light batoning... not even testing. I think it is probable that all of these knife companies have considerable variability within and between production runs. For example, there might be some Work Tuff Ares that would break right away on the brick. Other knives that shattered quickly might have individual models that are near indestructible. We won't know until your channel grows to the point where you can test at least a handful of each model. For that, you will have to have calibrated machines do your testing. Such repeated abuse is not for the human body and you should preserve yourself so you will still be a badass great grandfather .
One caveat is that pre-GSM Cold Steel machetes from South Africa all seemed to hold up well. So that would imply uniform toughness of these products... but I'm sure there are exceptions. And I hope I don't own any exceptions. Prost, mein Kumpel! You are the best!
yeah, this was the canadian Gus guy! saw his vid!!!
i had no issue with the old CS machetes!!!! but i will start to do retest on blades that failed!!!

Hey Joe fucking awesome review the blade did suck big disappointment will have to re think buying work tuff. Also when pulling the knife from the sheath grab the spine end dont hold the knufes edge part of sheath, because the blade inside the sheath is slowly cutting the sheath from the inside out and one day itll cut through the sheath and bye bye fingers. @scdub You obviously missed the other two work tuff videos, huh young man.
Nope - that’s my point - one bad test doesn’t make a bad brand. I’d be happy with a Busse or a Work Tuff in an emergency, but I know that either can break - especially with a thin profile…
I'm glad I'm not a red VW Golf roof top !
yeah!
Made in Taiwan I believe. Overhyped & overpriced in my opinion. Personally I don’t like how they run their website business either, everyone fighting over small batches of “Condor” quality knives. @joeDoomsday We would love to see how your Mtech or Ozark Trail collection holds up young man.
Dude. I’ve been saying that all along. They have a crappy business model
i need to get more intel on this WTG company!!!
@@vincentmorello3160 ,… I can give my honest opinion confidently because I have tried almost every knife ever made. From the lowest priced budget knife all the way up to very high end custom knives. I own the WTG : Nomad , Puzon, asset, ares and Kodiak. They are ok knives. Overpriced & overhyped. Certainly Not worth fighting over when they release 15 of them to the entire World twice per year. If they could be purchased at any time and were priced around $100 like they should be, then they would be worth it.
@@joex ,… I agree. I don’t want to hate on them but, I don’t like their business model at all. The five knives I have from them leave a lot to be desired considering how expensive they are. Maybe they will make some small changes and become a “Top Dog”, Knife company. Who knows.

WTG has plenty other knives with thicker spine and reinforced tip. Nomad Camp, Nomad Field, Kodiak, Grizzly and of course the mighty Mountain Man or even the 9 inch Puzon Wilderness Bowie is much thicker stock.
