BUCK 120 GENERAL KNIFE - STEEL: 420HC
• BUCK 120 GENERAL KNIFE...
I love the 120. Great knife with great edge geometry. Still, you see how the additional toughness of the 420HC helps with edge stability whereas S35VN is just way more brittle in combination with the hollow grind.
The fact that Buck decided to change their handle material from very slippery on their standard version to even more slippery on their pro versions is almost comically absurd. I put some rubber shrinking tube for fishing rods over my handle. Looks clean and provides excellent grip and can be removed completely if needed.
As always, thank you for your service, Joe!
u are welcome!!! fuckkkking slippery!!!!!!!!
I wish there was a company like esee doing their knives in 420hc. With a good heat treat and profile people don't realize how tough 420hc is.
I agree, 420HC is excellent stuff if well done and Buck does it well. I generally prefer 12C27 and AUS8 because they are more modern alloys, but the 120 and the 119 in 420HC are some of the very best knife designs ever made.

You are one of those youtubers I hope gets super super rich based on the amount of work you are putting into it..
thanks a lot brother!
he will by having knife companies pay him NOT to test their knives 🤣
Literally just saw this same comment on another top buck knife you dirty w40re lol
Buck what the fuck 😂 seriously, this man does the splits, dives destroys knives. Fuck yeah man! This is fucking entertainment.
thanks a lot!
Best one yet .. laughed my ass off 🤣
Marlboro!
This man doing that split terrifies us all
because he is insane!
The only things the Buck general is good for = Sticking holes in people / a fairly decent butcher knife and looking tough around the campfire.
It held up longer than expected. Thanks JOE X .
u are welcome, it did ok!
Time to claim that warranty. 😂😂😂
Marlboro!
Wouldn't want to be caught trespassing on Joe-x property
i am a nice guy usually!
Only sheaths and boxes to destroy. The best test in the world, nowhere else. High grade steel is an illusion, JOEX is the best.
thanks my brother from Japan!!!
Can usually tell by the length of the video how well a knife did...guess I'll just have to be surprised today. :)
the new ones are longer, because i started to baton!
This was a great video! I laughed out loud a bunch of times... like with the blade fell into the hollow stump "asshole!" I always find it funny when a blade snaps in multiple places on a tip test. When the handle absolutely exploded, more laughing. And the end... the pieces in the shovel? Wow, brilliant comedic touch! Prost!
thanks my friend!
The raw, unhinged power of Joe cannot be beaten
AMEN BROHTER TACTICAL!
Fantastic! I really didn't expect it to take much abuse. Its a great slicer and stabber but thats about all.
thats what Sidney said!
That's gonna be a hard pass at $210 USD. Your fanboy imitation is spot-on! Thanks! 🐈🐈⬛😹
u are welcome!!!
That's a stabber for sure!
100 %
The knife did pretty well for a hollow grind hunting knife. Though I was told that hunting knife needs a saw for cutting pelvis 🤷
After reading trough the comments I have one rewuest: if you ever sell patches, please offer one that says "I watch JOEX for the plot"
yeah for hunting rats it will be fine, but if u go for poussey....?
patches, i go tya!
Vandamme style. Almost like famous movies, Hard target, Lion heart, Blood sport.. :-)
No retreat,no surrender.
yeah! Marlboro!
Joe Joe Joe all you have to do my friend is take a quarter sheet of 150 grit sandpaper and wrap it around that handle.
Then grip it and twist the sandpaper around the handle.
Sanding in a texture.
You'll get a very nice cross grain grip texture.
It will dull that fancy girlie handle but it will then be grippy even when wet.
Trust me on that one brother.
thanks for the advice but if it cost this $$$ i expect not to lay hand on it!
Joe X Drama at the end is pretty funny.
Marlboro!
Good start and bad end😂😂😂
yeah!
Another fall of myth ( thoughness of s35 steel) Great Joe!!!

You're really steppin up your JCVD game! Really surprised me how well this Buck held up! I hope they honor that warranty lol 🤘🤘
thanks bro!!!! warranty, we shall see!!!
The blade snapped across it's full width not where the breakout was. Indicates a poor blade grind to ricasso transition. Stress raiser for sure. Come on Buck, you have to try harder than that to beat Joe X 😂😂😂
good one, thanks, they should change some things!
Spoiler alert
Probably the best heat treatment in the business....BOSS.

👍👍👍Absolut super. Danke dir 💪💪💪

Hey Joe, Buck has one of the best warranty on the knife on the market. I have a Buck folding knife for over 20 years it was made in the U.S and I wore out the blade. Buck replace the blade for free. I watch your video on the Buck. I believe if the blade had a spear point . The tip would last longer. Keep up with great videos. From all of in America. Cheers.
yeah, probably a Spear Point would better! it is sharp as heallll!!! cheers bro!
I knew it would shatter!
Marlboro!
Man! It held up so good! I almost had a new favorite too.
cool, good stabber but nothing for WW 3
People have said for years that "super steels" are not across the board upgrades. Unfortunately these days fewer and fewer people are aware of this
i agree!
@@joex I spent a lot of money of knives unecessarily for years. In 1986 I heard of the Glock FM78 as a kid, but never knew what it was called nor where to get it. I didn't even know if its strength was myth or legend ...until I saw your test. I think they are going to become the next Gerber MkII, even more given they are more legal in more countries. So I recently brought 6 of them (in black)! I absolutely love the FM78!!! It stopped me buying Fallkniven which in a pound for pound comparison I'm sorry to say are almost weak! Thank you.
I am a fanboy of that knife, but I am crying not for the knife, but at you doing those splits. Holy crap. Maybe you are not survival Lily under there after all maybe you are Van Damme
i think i might be his bro!

u are welcome Roberto!
It's good for shaving, that's for sure. Just by looks it screams - Be avere, I am super sharp 🪒😮! For a razor, it's fantastic 😁. Entertaining video Joe ⚔️
thanks, it is sharp!!!!
Seems like the 420hc is tougher than s35vn. So large knifes for abuse should be like 5160 or similar spring steels.
probably, i think they were the same!
Wow! That buck made you work for that! Lasted waaaay longer than I figured it would.
it did ok!
Awesome!
thanks!
A buddy of mine had this with the black handle idk if they made these in different steels or not but he's a knife fan and for what ever reason he chose to try and help open a truck tail gate with it and the tip snapped real quick ...we all know it's not something ya should do but he did it
bucks snap, thats what they do!!!!

In a world of mamby pamby knife reviewers rises a new hero: Joe Claude Van Damme! starring in the blockbuster hit, "fuck your knife"!
AMEN BROTHER!
joe this is a great knife - looks like a grandpa knife but it is impressive - the stabs were excellent - it looks like a great hunting knife - great steel - after all it has been hammered by Joe X
grandpa is adios!
Its not a 'grandpa knife' its a classic design that still holds true today. In fact when you get old, it may be your last knife. A knife like this was my first and ended up being my last, and I've had everything. I cant explain it, but its just natural.

Wie immer unterhaltsam! Weiter so!

Don't know how useful Joe's bending test is. Knives aren't designed for prying. For that task, buy a crow bar; they come in many sizes. All stronger than a knife.
But Joe's tests are overkill abuse. That's why we watch them even if they're not that relevant to actual knife usage.
Idea: Test different crow bars. Most might be stronger than Joe.
But don't try to chop down a tree with one.
And Buck knives? They live on their reputation. Despite how easily destroyed some of them are, for most uses, they serve their owners well enough.
Like Joe says about every knife: test it until it breaks. And they all break.
thats why i bend so much!!!!
Most YT videos I start losing interest at about 8 minutes but JoeX vids are entertaining and informative. I wonder if Buck has considered making a variant 120 with full tang and beefed up the blade using 80crv2?
cool, glad u like my dark side!!!!

u are welcome!
Great video brother..let the fanboys cry..hahaha
thanks, yeah let them!
Loving the test as usual. Honestly who ever are making these "super steels" needs to make some sort of ultra though steel that can top classics like 1075, 1055, 5160, and aus 8. Because while edge retention is nice (don't get me wrong), but these steels just snap under pressure if used in a real emergency situations. And if you are in a emergency situation you would need to be able to maintain the edge. And the aformetiond steels have that trait in abundance. Where as good luck maintaining the edge of 3v or rex121on the field if you lose your tools.
Though honestly speaking, it does make sense financially, as they can sell stupidly expensive chippy blades to fan boys. Who at best would just make a rope cutting video and by merit of its abillty to hold an edge would tout it as the greatest thing to happen in modren history. And in addition these steels sell well for those edc guys who buy 400+ dollar knives only to use it to scrape gunk from their fingernails and to open the box of another stupidly expesive knife. Though to give merit where it is due, when skinning the edge would come in handy when prossesing large game. And it did not claim to be some super survival knife like the failure that was the trc apocalypse which some how failed on the brick and was shit tang.
But move to something more positve I think there might be a contender for another suvivor, I.e the cold steel true flight thrower. The reasoning is
1. It is full tang and only has one hole for I assume a lanyard (but honestly it's too far up)
2. S50C steel is similar to 1055 in composition and possibly more tougher due to less carbon and we know how well they did cold steel's legendary machetes.
3. is thick behind the edge unlike many cold steel machetes possibly leading to better chance for survival on the brick
4. Has a stout flat grind unlike what they did with the new rendition of the srk.
5. It is about 5mm thick in the spine.
6. And finally at least comparing to the other knives in my collection it has a reasonably thick tip.
So if this peaks your interest I would really like to see a test for said knife. as if it survives, or at least up to the iron rod and can withstand some amount (from the rod). We can conclusively prove to those knife snobs that not only are your "survival" knife brittle as glass but here is a 30 dollar knife that can withstand and remain steadfast where as you blade litter Joe's field in shatters.
Anyways that's my rant, best of luck to you Joe, and Peace out.
Completely agree :D I use an Esee for all my survival knives, becuase I know and History shows that you can use hi-carbon steel and sharpen it on a river stone if needed. I do use super steels for my edc fixed blade/camping/hiking/ hunting fixed blades but have a backup of simple carbon steel for the same reason. and I alway this the road to super steels is just a Harder (pun intended) part of the Riddle of steel, the Contradiction of steel, Make something Hard, but also make it tough( aka soft to absorb shock). something that I might be stuck in the wilderness with, carbon steel. something I use day to day and can sharpen at home with diamonds. Super steels.
Cheers,
FInal note, Why are they not making axes out of supesteels? LOL
thanks a lot for the intel brother! Marlboro!
Bro 5160 is the toughness supersteel lol
3V is Immensely tough if left softer, same with all the super steels they are supposed to be run hard.
S35VN from Cold Steel already showed how it has to behave to justify it being called super steel see Joe's Recon 1 and SR1 review's
There are a couple '1v clones' that aim for precisely that 'fancy and focused on tough' niche. Joe will test one soon with the Busse.
Sadly consumers must make do with all these offerings that fail to be machete-like things in 1055 and knife-like things in 5160 or 14c28n and sits around like a trophy-like things in Magnacut like they would ideally be.
Happily for bemused-but-easily-amused engineers and other curious parties there is a whole inefficient industry of this stuff for some magnificent Austrian lunatic to make a spectacle of finding the breaking points for.
Buck knives are actually made in the US. That's one of the ways they keep their heat treatment process secret.
ok cool!

The lgbt pro is probably my favorite knife of all time, but it sure can’t pry or chop cardoors for sh1t :). Thank you for putting it through both regular use and hard use, as there’s no practical reviews of this model in particular. You should also test the Fox fx140xl; it’s full tang Niolox steel around the same price as the 120 pro on knivesnadtools, there’s no practical reviews on that one either, but would love to see how resistant it is. And there’s also the Ontario rat 6, in s35vn but it’s not on knivesandtools yet, so only purchasable from bladehq or other stores, both in eu and us.
Keep the vids coming and stay strong!

Good knife
sure !
The buck looks well designed as a specialised hunting knife and sounds like it is super sharp. Pity the handle is so slippery as I am pretty fussy on my handles. Shame the metal seems a bit brittle - I imagine the steel is super hard and not too flexible? So maybe for a survival type knife you might buy something tougher but as a deer hunting knife it would do ok. Just need to put a non slip handle on it! Thanks for all your great work Joe X! 🇦🇹 🇳🇿
