Are These the Ultimate Cutting Swords?

  • These swords show perfectly why it's not just about straight vs. curved blades.
There are plenty of factors that go into the design of historical weapons, and current (re-)interpretations of them. How far can you push it when trying to maximize cutting power? Well, let's see...
This is an in-depth test and review of two designs (four swords in total, three of which are different length versions). Taking a close look at the fit, finish, handling, cutting performance, and overall value.

Extremely impressive Is an understatement, in one of his videos he cuts all the way through thigh target with Kevlar loosely draped over it. Crazy! I can definitely appreciate the fact he personally sharpens every sword himself, all to common to pay big bucks for a sword and still have to sharpen it yourself. I would love to pick up a baron to try for myself. Oh yeah and I want to try out his targets, he will send them to anyone willing to post footage of themselves cutting them. Or trying to cut them lol they're hard.

      I just have to ask:
1 to 1.6k for a sword that is meant for "test cutting".
What's the point in that? Test cutting doesn't improve your skill with a sword, and it doesn't really tell you about how sharp the sword is you are using - because you are using a sword that is meant to be that sharp, and you won't use it for sparring or for fighting.
So what's the actual point in spending this amount of cash?
You know there is katanas that you can buy for a price like that, right? Very good steal, maybe not from a japanese craftsman, but still good looking and very much practical in all scenarios, right?
I just wanna understand, while reading this comment section of people willing to buy snake oil.

But for me, if I ever won the lottery, I'd want to get my first high end "dream sword"; with the top 5 being from Albion, Valiant Armoury, or Lockwood...but I'd have to give the top spot to Lancelot with the Red Baron for both cutting and aesthetic design, and the second spot to Supreme Cutter Classic for practicality. If I were a medieval-era a drunk mercenary or homeowner defending against raiders, it'd be a Lancelot sword I'd want to be grabbing to entrust my life.

I only recently learned about these swords from your channel, and they are so impressive! Both the supreme cutter and the red baron are gorgeous, and they both seem to perform so incredibly well! The supreme cutter in particular is a very pretty shape to me. I love the combination of the slightly curved single-edged blade with the recurved handle and the wide disc guard; it looks kind of like a combination of multiple different styles of historical swords from all across Asia, and it makes a really unique and beautiful appearance! And of course it performs exceptionally well, seemingly way better than any of the styles of swords that you see aspects of in its design. I also like that Lancelot designed it based on efficacy and usefulness in practical modern defense situations; I don't really see many smiths focusing on that. If I had the disposable income to make such a purchase at the moment, this would definitely be on my shopping list

Doing some thinking about curved handles/handle profiles (especially on swords like these: recurves) and I'm realizing that a recurved handle will help with edge alignment quite a bit, especially when you strike the target and the chance of the blade rolling is higher. Having your points of contact on the handle have a wider axis of control gives you way more leverage against the torque of blade rolling.
A stacked grip on a straight handle: you can only correct for blade roll with your grip strength (which also incorporates handle friction)
Two hands offset on a curved handle: the force of 'blade roll' must be magnitudes greater than your hand spread and grip strength to mess up your edge alignment.

Love the level of detail here, and the clarity on when you are making subjective judgement. I quite like that Red Baron as a sword style - to me double edge is to me the right choice, especially when you are going in for a slicing weapon, and the blade profile that makes it an effective cutter in a much wider sweetspot is good - if you are leaning towards being good in the cut you might as well go all in and excel at it. Though for me a stouter more rondel dagger profile thrusting sword seems more useful in the real world - can still slash deep enough to wound the soft target if you need to but will still work against targets too armoured for a slashing focused weapon to really be effective, that or a trusty sledgehammer, which is good for all occasions...

I did notice in some of your footage that slight edge misalignment causes significant blade vibration/flex with these. I would expect less rigidity in a blade with this profile, so it's not a surprise and if you have very precise alignment, I suspect that the narrow blade reduces friction while cutting. So that's an intentional tradeoff in design; I'm just not personally sure that the profile would be my preference.
NB: There is no difference in "precision" between metric and imperial. You can get any precision you like out of any units you want as long as they are well defined.
Of course, people who aren't limited to understanding a single system already know that, but there you go.
And at least imperial uses units of force for weight rather than using units of mass to imply force. Of course, this is because the metric unit of force is a bit inconvenient for everyday use, so people have taken to using the bastardized kg (weight).

IDK what it is specifically, but this video reminds me why I respect Skall so much compared to other sword-tubers who shall remain unnamed. One, incredibly humble and about as objective as one can be in a product review. Two, look at the background. Pacific Islander sharktooth club, Igorot headhunting axe, Chinese longsword, European warhammer, bronze age shortsword, and fantasy/zombie blades. That's what I call diversity and not just a wall of katanas or sabers or longswords.

Super late to the party, but am I the only one who noticed the Red Baron is straight up a two-handed Taijian? Every aspect from the oversized pommel to bring the balance right into your palm despite having zero distal taper, to the point geometry, to the grip shape.
I'm not saying Lancelot just went out and intentionally made an upscaled version of a very famous sword design, but let me put it this way. The moment I saw it, my first thought was that it looked like a comically oversized sword, then realized it's actually mid-size at best. The reason? It looked so much like a giant version of a sword with which I'm very familiar.

Hey I wanted to ask since you also comment a lot on practicality of fictional weaponry and combat styles, that a lot of analyses not just yours but probably everyone ever who asked these questions forget about one important aspect that might make lot of weird and wacky weapon designs and armor designs make more sense.
And that is simply the fact that in 99% of video games (who are the primary source of ridiculous designs) also take place in a world where the average person can take full swing of large axe into the skull 3 times before passing out, and on the second swing drink bottle of magic juice and have all damage cured instantly. This kind of ridiculous resistance could make most guns about as effective as throwing shaving razors on a person because while they do pierce almost anything and completely go through most armor, they only produce small holes in the body which people in lot of these settings could easily scoff off. Similarly it could force people to use more heavy and slower less maneuverable weapons. In real life a person gets poked with blade and are either dead or about to bleed out unless they immediately seal off the wound and flee the fight, in average videogame you get stabbed and slashed and poked 10+ times to die. If people had this much of a endurance, you would probably think they would be more focused on offense and less on defense, swordfights being more about who can damage the other more faster and less about endless deflecting and trying to get a single good shot, like how box isn't about trying to avoid every punch because single punch isn't lethal.

The Super Assassin Katana by Dan Keffeler is by far the most impressive cutting sword I've seen in a video, at least against harder targets like trees. I'm curious how it'd compared to these blades from Lancelot. I'd guess it'd be worse against softer targets but better against harder ones, & more durable. It also cost $7,400 USD in 2014, so that's extremely pricey.

If you had to pick a sword to (at least attempt to) fight a war against an enemy with modern body armor and automatic firearms, what sword would you pick? Like genuinely, what would you suggest for ambush attacks with 1-5 swordsmen vs a squad (9-15 modern soldiers) doing a patrol? I'm considering writing a sort of Red Dawn-esque story but in a country that has either banned civilian use of guns or it's an occupying/invading force on a culture that never developed guns.

    • @DarkZ19
      @DarkZ19 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Swords wouldn't do much against modern body armour (they didn't do much against medieval armor), they may bruise flesh if swinged hard enough and go through some types of armor, but that would require more of a stabbing motion rather than slashing. You'd do better with something akin to a halberd or a mace.
If you really want to use swords tho, go with ones meant for thrusting.
