Ok guys this was the engine in the vote for the next barn rescue. It was basically a tie between this and the 1974 MTD , but I recently sold the MTD to a friend that wanted to restore it.
I’ve had one for 18 years now, ran good. This year started nocking, took valve cover off and here the rocker bolt came loose and popped off push rod. Push rod bent a bit, only damage I seen. So just got a new one yesterday.
You know what I love about Tecumseh's. Those coils look like a standard Tecumseh coil from a mower. . The carbs look different. How fun. Can you just jet the carbs? A dual carb power unit LOL. The bolts holding the carbs in look like B&S. I am a Tecumseh fan. You know. You have to just put it in service. Cool. My brother in Law has a 77 240Z Datsun with dual carbs. Hard to balance.
Hi Bruce. That's why I showed how small the venturies are. I'm afraid if I put bigger jets in it wouldn't get enough air to go with it. The coils look the same but I assure you the mounting holes are different. I think it's just to cool to put in a mower. I've got ideas for something cool to put it in

That's cool! I didn't know Tecumseh made a twin either and I never would have guessed the dual carbs. That one's a keeper IMO. I too was going to say that must have been at or near the end of Tecumseh's run, doesn't look very old.
We've had a MTD riding mower sitting in our yard for about 6 or 7 years. It has this same motor in it. It got parked because it would start. It'd turn over and over but not fire up. We want to get it going but don't know where to start. It'll get fresh oil, spark plugs, new starter, but it might not be getting gas. We have very little knowledge about small motors like this. Hope we can get it going again. Thanks for the video. We might have to get new carburetors as well if they can't be serviced or cleaned.
Chances are it's the fuel shut off solenoid located on the bottom of the carbs. They have a wire connected to them. Take the solenoid out and cut the stem off. Then there is also a plunger that needs to come out that that stem would push against
I just worked one for a customer. At first I thought it was a Vanguard. Then a Chinese motor for MTD. Nope, Tecumseh. The engine sounds smooth and powerful.
Hi Mike. Yes I've done a few. These particular ones I'm not fond of. I've had to replace some in the past because no matter how clean you get them they don't want to work. I'm very lucky these still work

Man I know this is few yrs old video.. but I just bought a racing lawn mower with a tecumseh 691 tvt in it. It's spsoto have a stroker kit with aluminum rods, forged pistons, iskie cam shaft, It has a similar carb set up on it. I'm going to take the air cleaner off and look down inside of it. But it runs super strong, real snappy throttle response. Turns like 9 thou in rpm....
Could be a few reasons, dirty jets, air leak, or the problem I've seen is these carbs have a little plunger that works with the fuel shut off solenoid, when you take out the solenoid and look inside the hole you should see the plunger, take it out. But also not all of them have that setup so I don't know what you have. Good luck
Have you had any issues from these such as popping/ surging? I have literally replaced both carbs, coils, intake seals, springs, plugs, rebuilt both heads, done leak down and compression tests, checked flywheel key, and it still pops through the exhaust. Everything is within specs including cam lift. It seems to do better when mowing. Is this something that can be caused by the carbs not being synchronized correctly?
Aftermarket carburetors are the issue. Some of the brands aren't making the pressure port hole right in the base of the modular carburetor. Have one I am working on. Had to put the original bowls on the top parts of the new carburetors. And running it with seafoam to clean up the old bottom parts. Can run it on about half choke with little issues.
Hi lawnmower man. Actually I think they were made by Tecumseh. There is a lot of fail points on them. I've had to replace them in the past on other Tecumseh enduros but I'll bet you can't even get them anymore. Thanks for watching and commenting
I just bought one on a Dixon zero turn for $100 THAT RUNS! 25hp I think he said. And you're right, i.e. when a Tecumseh carburetor messes up is best to get another one. I've tried so many times and could never get one running right with rebuild kits, cleaning, jetting, etc. I need the part number for your carbs as they are the same, in appearance judging by the linkages, as mine and can't find the exact ones. Was hoping to get brand new carbs. If I spray carb cleaner in left side it almost dies, spray in right side it just drops a few RPM and clearly runs on one cylinder until it clears out. I want new carbs then I'll go from there lol

I’d be impressed if they had an opposed twin they are my favorite style I have a Briggs opposed twin horizontal in a international harvester cub and a Kohler magnum 18 in a hydro garden tractor with hydraulics they make the greatest sound and an onan in a skid steer it sounds amazing

Hi Dave,good video,i have same engine but cant get the engine revs to raise with the accelerator cable,when i move the cable the revs dont increase,the cable moves that centrally located linkage but doesnt do anything to revs, have you had this issue with yours?

Check coil. Also the fuel shut off solenoid has a little rubber plunger that should be taken out because even if you cut the pin the plunger is still in there cutting off fuel
No but you should be able to look them up using the numbers off the engine. Probably going to be hard to get since Tecumseh has been out of business for a while
Carb is 640221. Amazon seems to have and maybe partstree.com . replacement bowl which is pretty much all the carb is 640220 and available at repairclinic.com and partstree.

@@michaelcollins5586 wires go to power. Turn the key on and if you hear them click they are working. If no click then they are bad. Not sure that's your problem. Could be clogged jets

All of my stuff wether it's engines or machines with engines is all used and in disrepair so I get them for $200 all the way down to free. It really depends on the person that's getting ride of it. Also depends on size and type. This particular one I bought for $100 in a riding mower that had a bad trans but then I found another one just like this one and just the engine cost $90. If you want new it's going to be well over $1000

Take the engine cover off and try to turn the flywheel

Thanks Jeff. I was just using the muffler it came with. I can tell you it's a pretty standard muffler, they use them on Briggs engines too

I'm having issues with the carburetor on one of these engines...acts like it isn't getting fuel...starts on starting fluid...replaced all gas lines...
Make sure the fuel lines are factory. Also need a high amp battery
Mine dose the same thing runs on starting fluid I replaced the fuel line and still wont run

Yes you could just cut the one that doesn't work but just remember to keep the wire hooked to the one that does work

Fuel solenoids are bad or not getting power. Or the jets are clogged and carbs need cleaning
