      Never seen the Link for the Compression Release Kit ..... Only Link is for the Cam that has the Compression Release already on the Cam..... is there a Kit that is for the Compression Release Components Only ? .... that way i can just Replace what is actually Broken .... my Cam is Good..... Thanks for the Great Video.

    Appreciate you posting doublewide6! Just a little tid bit of info for the people interested in tackling this job. It's a good idea to remove the spark plug and push rods before cracking open the cranks case / sump. It will release the compression load on the crank if you need to rotate it and spring load on the cam for easy removal.

    Set Intake valve clearance to .004 tight. If this doesnt help, your compression release mechanism on the camshaft has went south.

    • @ryandormann9621
      @ryandormann9621 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the trick. I've seen .006 not be enough but .004 did the trick even when compression release didnt work

      @1crazynordlander 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just find it interesting a company would spend the extra dollar to put a balance shaft system in a inexpensive engine, especially a one cylinder. I could see one in a four cylinder because of their inherent rotating mass issues.

    had a similar problem with a lawn mower I went to buy from a neighbor, and it was overfilled with oil... oil poured out of the chamber when I removed the spark plug, and it poured out of the muffler / exhaust pipe too... Once I drained the oil and cleaned it, it ran fine... It had fluid lock / vapor lock.

    • @doublewide6
      @doublewide6  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes when you see that the problem is a leaky seat. If there is gas in the oil the problem will come back. I have a video on how to fix it on a Briggs 17 intek.

    valve adjustment on that Tecumseh you need to adjust your valves and set if you don't you may run into bigger problems that's been to push rod or even break the retainer nut and it's a common problem with that 17 horse Tecumseh

      Well, you are right about the metal. 95 percent of the metal was on the bottom of the engine sump (I have the engine turned up side down). Anyhow, The battery is new that I was cranking with, so I'm thinking once that compression release broke the engine never started again. Also that jump starter that I used can jump my V8 truck with no battery even installed.

    Take the plug out and see if it cranks o.k. If it does, it can be carbon on the piston, the crank key can be sheared because the blade is bent, dragging starter, etc. If the rockers are loose, the valve seat can be loose. Pull the head and check. Replace the head. Check the leakdown to check rings, valves, and head gasket.

      Jeffrey Dubinsky flooding carburetor will give the same type symptoms,but the gasoline being thinner than oil,it will blow by the piston rings and flow in to your crankcase.
      Check for elevated oil level and do a sniff test to the dipstick.
      Repair/replace the carburetor and change the oil.

    A large problem with the Tecumseh motors in particular is the issue after you got to put those bolts back in the bottom to mount it back up use Teflon tape on the threads or the bolts will work themselves loose on ya and fall out... I've had how many of em here over the years after mister shade tree mechanic replaced either that compression release or a leaky sump gasket the mounting bolts work them selves loose. You can't really use locktite because of all the oils in those bolt holes it don't stick to anything.. If you folks want to totally avoid breaking a compression release and avoid making junk out of your tractor use Synthetic 30 weight heavy duty Motor Cycle oil in the crank case and drill a dime size hole on the bottom of the muffler on the same side as the header pipe is at. The mufflers were too tight to begin with and most usually spring a little rust hole anyhow. However there are places in the southern USA where they don't get the rust like we do in the northern USA so breaking a compression release around here is not that common because people change their oils here and we have a shorter cutting mowing season here so the machines are not used as hard and oil usually gets changed. But for those of you with no pin holes or rust on the muffler make that dime size hole you will gain a little power too.

    • @puppygadget3189
      @puppygadget3189 ปีที่แล้ว

      So drilling the hole in the muffler then what let’s moisture out so it won’t rust inside the muffler?

    my bottom valve (intake) wont move, I know I adjusted them right per the specs on troy bilt pony with briggs 15.5 hp engine. both rods are not damaged, I have no idea what happened but days before it would start up and run then stall. I am thinking broken compression release in engine. On my engine the exhaust valve is on top and intake on bottom. Now it hard to turn over and never starts even with jump starter hooked up and batery and carb are new. New fuel filter and air filter. There was gas in engine oil before carb replacement but after carb replacement it ran then stalled after 20-30 seconds.

    the quick way to tell you probably have a bad solenoid is to short across the two big lugs on the solenoid if it spins then replace solenoid --- the way a solenoid works is when you turn the key switch on it conn batt. to the winding in the solenoid which closes the contacts inside to conn. 12 v batt, to the starter ..if this dont happen all you get is a click........

    I am confounded. My Briggs and Stratton 14HP Vanguard (Model #261777, Type #0144-01) engine's starter turns over very slow or not at all when the starter is installed. I have checked valve adjustment. I turn off the gas when I turn it off so no gas can siphon into the crankcase.
    When starter is removed, starter runs as should be expected. No binding or noises that I can detect. I disassembled the starter this past Saturday and cleaned up the brushes and armature. And lubed the end cap.
    I'm very tempted to buy a new starter but have this feeling that I don't need a new starter...that I'm missing something.
    Could a failure in the compression release mechanism/system be be the problem?
    Do you have any advise/council?
    Great video by the way.

    My Mtd Yard Machines ran fine til a few weeks ago. Now it won't start. Replaced the battery twice. Find out, it will crank over fast with the spark plug removed but very slowly when the plug is in. What is the exhaust valve? I tinkered with my exhaust/muffler cause it is rusted and I bolted it so it doesn't leak anymore.

      Your carburetor pin isn't working right to stop the flow of gas to the engine. I had that problem until i put a new carburetor on plus a gas shut off valve on the carburetor gas line
      Without the gas shut off valve i use to park the mower at a good slant to keep it from flooding the engine with gas it worked that way for awhile
      You might just need to adjust your carburetor pin or it may need a new carburetor bowl solenoid put on you'll need to change your oil and oil filter too i have cv16s Kohler pro and cv491s Kohler command engines
      Hopefully I'll be getting another cv491s but I do away with the cheap gas pumps cause they can leak gas into the engine so I don't want that

      @@Mike-su8si It turned out that the "NEW" battery was was fried after continuous charges due to failed starting attempts. It turned out the starter was fried too after all the failed attempts to start it. In other words the engine refusing to start caused the battery and starter to die.
      The thing that caused all these problems was unadjusted valves. The exhaust valve was so late in opening that the pressure in the cylinder was greater than the starter could overcome and that extra pressure wore out both battery and starter.
      I got a new starter and battery, adjusted the valves and now it starts good.

    if you want learn how fix your mower get a wiring diagram and learn how to read it if you can read a road map you can learn how trace wiring learn what every thing means for instance on relay contacts NO stans for normaly open so they would close as the relay is operated also if it says NC it means they go open as the relay operates the key switch --on makes this happen you learn how to use your ohm meter its is very simple to use you get a meter for less than 10$ it will test any thing for the average homer owner all you need on you meter is ohms ac-dc volts dont worry about reading amps you get volts ohms fixed current will take care of its self im a retired tech still use my meter almost daily wiring on my truck restoration

    Once the compression release quits working, DON'T run your motor anymore! Fix it! It has those little parts floating around inside the engine, basically banging against other moving parts and could ruin more parts or get lodged in places you don't want them. I've seen some horror stories caused by those little parts and you can actually ruin the entire motor if not fixed in time.
