  • Wash and drybrush stage are completed with roughly 5 hours spent, time to move on to the much maligned contrast paints =)

Looking rather good, will have to paint my late republic Romans for my numidians, essentially making them Pompeian forces for north Africa.

Polybius did write the Republican Romans wore black feathers so spot on. Your method really makes Gulliman flesh look good, I thought that paint was very “meh” when I used on the Unaltered GW primer.

He wrote black and purple, which is usually interpreted as black and red. (VI, 23) But he doesn't tell us, how many feathers of each colour were in the army. For speedpainting black will do. You can come back later and do some red, if you want.

Great stuff. Looking forward to your treatment of the cloth and leather. Am going to use your white drybrushing method asap.

Nice explanation of your method. The contrast paints are a speed painters new best friend i think (im still holding out on not buying them lol). Interesting history about the skin/hair. I guess by the imperial phase you can throw in anything, especially with the auxiallries as they recruited locals.
