*Some commonly asked questions:* *"What brushes do you use?"* In this video mostly Winsor & Newton Series 7 Miniature size 1 for the edge highlights and Rosemary & Co Series 33 size 1 for anything else. W&N are my go to for most projects. Having a good brush helps however it is not a magic bullet, this way of painting still requires a lot of brush control. *"How long does it take to paint a space marine like this?"* Around 2-3 days in the studio, depending on the details. It's not particularly a method I would recommend for a large army project, but it's great for character models and kill teams etc. You could also perhaps cut back on 1 stage of highlights or concentrate on the top edges and this would save a bit of time. *"My blue looks different"* This could be to do with my camera settings and youtube compression. I have since changed them a bit, the 360 at the beginning and end of the video should be more accurate. Macragge Blue has a lot of inconsistencies. Since the video was made I have opened 3 pots, each with a slightly different hue. *"Do you wear a magnification headset?"* In the studio no, I never used any magnification. In the last year I have used a cheap magnification headset available on Amazon, I find it quite useful for the finer detail work.

AHA! Now I know why 'Eavy Metal style looks so different than my nostalgia and old boxes tell me. YOU were there during the period I recall. Holy moly you've developed some immaculate brush control. Highly Impressive.
Congratulations on your Golden Demon with this scheme in the open competition. I have been using this video for years now for painting my Ultramarines, you managed to make my first model look like I had been painting for decades 😊.
Wow, this is such a fantastic and in-depth tutorial. Basically the definitive guide on painting marines in the eavy metal style. I've not seen such a detailed masterclass guide since Darren Latham closed his channel.
I never thought you could achieve such an high level painting job with “just” edge highlighting. Sure you need godlike brush control, but there are no highlights through layering/blending/glazing etc., probably, as he said in the video, to keep the process as replicable as possible by other painters. Thanks a lot for this masterclass!
Insane. Just insane. I have not painted a single figurine yet as I can’t afford them but one day I hope to buy one. Seems like fantastic therapy for the soul.
That intro, that HUD like info about which paint is being used, the tutorial itself - perfection!!! Cant wait to paint some Ultramarines Dave, thank you a million for such fantastic content
I've been painting Ultramarines since the mid-90s, and I've always wanted to see a step by step guide from an actual Eavy Metal painter. Thank you for making this, fantastic video and paint job!
I'm new to the painting hobby. Your tutorials have been immensely helpful, especially where all the fine highlighting is concerned. I also really like how much real time painting you show. It's very helpful to see the more of the process instead of just the start and then end result. Thanks so much.
This is as mental as it is beautiful, maybe for captains and named characters but I don't see myself doing a whole army like that. So beautiful and clean
The best 'Eavy Metal Ultramarines painting video I've seen so far. This would have been perfect for me some time ago, when I started my Ultramarines army. Now, I see that I came to the same process you showed here, so I'm very glad and proud. I can come back to this video every time a need to remember any step of the process. Thank you for your awesome job!
Wow! Your brush control is incredible. Not sure how I have missed your channel, it is criminally underrated for miniatures painting. Thanks for this tutorial!
Outstanding work and tutorial. I’m new to figurines. I’ve spent 40 years on and off building and painting aviation, cars and tanks. I find painting mini figures a great fun distraction between projects that can take weeks or more.
Holy crap, this is just phenomenal! When I was a kid back in the 90s, this is the level of skill I dreamed of having, and now we can see it in action. Benchmark is set, now I have to practice practice practice!
Can we also just take a moment to appreciate how far along the space marine model sculpts have come? This painy job is amazing, but it's that sculpt which just allows for paint jobs like this to shine
Brilliant video Dave! The incredible quality of your painting, the amount of work you put in to edit it all together, the new intro and a cracking choice of music all coming together beautifully in the highest quality painting tutorial.
honestly insane and much respect. I could just not put this amount of time and effort itno a single intercessor (but also don't have anywhere near enough skill to even attempt).
Thank you so much for sharing the actual 'eavy Metal secrets everyone has been speculating on for decades! My only disappointment is that you really do have to be as skilled as the box art suggests! lol
I love the Ultramariens. But I hate painting the blue color scheme. I was never happy with it. But your tutorial has won me over anew and I am highly satisfied. Really thank you for that. Great work.
This is like masterclass painting tutorial which i gotta love coz it gives me a sense of hope and inspiration that someday with practice il be able to achieve at least half of this 😁
I realize this video is a year old but two questions: - how are you filming the painting process? It’s so close up and crystal clear! - how do you glue the final mini together? Do the painted joint surfaces cause problems for something like plastic glue? Your patience and precision while painting is just mind-blowing!
Finally a video, where the model is actually painted like the box art. I can't count how many videos I have seen where I thought: "Nope, that is not like the box art at all" This one is, and thank you, thank you, thank you🥰

Incredible job. The amount of brush control is amazing. I just started painting WH figures, been 43 years since I painted a model. Your video has been really helpful.
Amazing work, incredible attention to detail and very well explained. I have watched 5 times already and is a pleasure to see such a beautiful Space Marine, will love to see other chapters, thank you

I've only recently been introduced to Warhammer 40K. While I don't play the tabletop game per se, I really enjoy the units, characters and the lore of the whole universe. I thought that some of the figurines were already painted because of the very specific style on the boxes. Looks like I found why that is. Incredible work!
Really enjoyed that video. As a Fantasy/AOS fan I don’t paint that many space marines these days. However I agree that they make great projects to learn the basics and refine your brush skills.
Essentially it’s just 2 things - smooth coverage and edge highlight of every line with two layers (darker and thinner brighter one) - eavy metal looks nice but is definitely a very long and impractical way to paint imho.
Awesome dave me and my lad will be following you . My son is in the shed now getting ready to paint one and he hasn't watched it yet but he's been ask me to find a painting guide the eavy metal way forever thanks

Regarding transfers, Dave has a video on it covering what you need to do.
@@kylekeenan3485 Haha yes Kyle, I was about to paste the link. If it's for table top you can always varnish over the top.

Hi you say 2-3 days so how many hours for one Intercessor like this ??
No idea how you can face painting another Ultramarine after all those years at GW, but thank you for taking the time to put this tutorial out!
🤣
It's how the Warp started, bringing forth the stuff of nightmares triggered by too many Ultramarines.
😂👍🏻
