- Hello I am Dave aka Infernal Brush.
I am a former 'Eavy Metal painter of 9 years and now a miniature painting content creator on TH-cam and Twitch. I endeavour to produce tuition videos that shed light on the processes and techniques that go into creating the box art for many Games Workshop products in an informative and accessible format. In this Ultramarine video I cover almost every aspect of painting a Space Marine in the 'Eavy Metal style, from demonstrating the edge highlighting techniques and stages as well as useful tips on how to apply them to the miniature and what paints and brushes are used.

*Some commonly asked questions:*
*"What brushes do you use?"*
In this video mostly Winsor & Newton Series 7 Miniature size 1 for the edge highlights and Rosemary & Co Series 33 size 1 for anything else. W&N are my go to for most projects. Having a good brush helps however it is not a magic bullet, this way of painting still requires a lot of brush control.
*"How long does it take to paint a space marine like this?"*
Around 2-3 days in the studio, depending on the details. It's not particularly a method I would recommend for a large army project, but it's great for character models and kill teams etc. You could also perhaps cut back on 1 stage of highlights or concentrate on the top edges and this would save a bit of time.
*"My blue looks different"*
This could be to do with my camera settings and youtube compression. I have since changed them a bit, the 360 at the beginning and end of the video should be more accurate. Macragge Blue has a lot of inconsistencies. Since the video was made I have opened 3 pots, each with a slightly different hue.
*"Do you wear a magnification headset?"*
In the studio no, I never used any magnification. In the last year I have used a cheap magnification headset available on Amazon, I find it quite useful for the finer detail work.
Edit to answer my own question 😁
Regarding transfers, Dave has a video on it covering what you need to do.
@@kylekeenan3485 Haha yes Kyle, I was about to paste the link. If it's for table top you can always varnish over the top.
came here to ask about brushes. you read our minds :)
How do you set up the sub assembly?
Hi you say 2-3 days so how many hours for one Intercessor like this ??
No idea how you can face painting another Ultramarine after all those years at GW, but thank you for taking the time to put this tutorial out!
🤣
It's how the Warp started, bringing forth the stuff of nightmares triggered by too many Ultramarines.
😂👍🏻

Same, I appreciate this.
It indeed is helpful, thank you very much.
Thank you very much!
대인, 고맙소.
This is hands down the nicest Space marine I've ever seen.
Utterly incredible work Dave! Easily the best “how to paint Ultramarines” video out there and that end marine is supremely sharp! 🔥💪
Thank you mate! ♥
I agree, sems the best for me too
This is all I've ever wanted since i was 10 years old! Im 30 now. Thank you
All these crisp, sexy lines is a thing of black magic!
AHA! Now I know why 'Eavy Metal style looks so different than my nostalgia and old boxes tell me. YOU were there during the period I recall. Holy moly you've developed some immaculate brush control. Highly Impressive.
Even when I see it right before my eyes, I still cannot understand how you can paint so tiny details. Like the vents on the helmet. Amazing skills!!
There's no denying that looks awesome, but painting consistently like this would suck all the enjoyment out of it for me
Wow, this is such a fantastic and in-depth tutorial. Basically the definitive guide on painting marines in the eavy metal style. I've not seen such a detailed masterclass guide since Darren Latham closed his channel.
I never thought you could achieve such an high level painting job with “just” edge highlighting. Sure you need godlike brush control, but there are no highlights through layering/blending/glazing etc., probably, as he said in the video, to keep the process as replicable as possible by other painters. Thanks a lot for this masterclass!
This is as mental as it is beautiful, maybe for captains and named characters but I don't see myself doing a whole army like that. So beautiful and clean
I've been painting Ultramarines since the mid-90s, and I've always wanted to see a step by step guide from an actual Eavy Metal painter. Thank you for making this, fantastic video and paint job!
That intro, that HUD like info about which paint is being used, the tutorial itself - perfection!!! Cant wait to paint some Ultramarines Dave, thank you a million for such fantastic content
I'm new to the painting hobby. Your tutorials have been immensely helpful, especially where all the fine highlighting is concerned. I also really like how much real time painting you show. It's very helpful to see the more of the process instead of just the start and then end result. Thanks so much.
This is some tasty precision dude, A1 work
How similar are your series m brushes to the Windsor and Newton one he is using?
Finally a video, where the model is actually painted like the box art.
I can't count how many videos I have seen where I thought: "Nope, that is not like the box art at all"
This one is, and thank you, thank you, thank you🥰
1 and a half minutes in and I’ve already learnt loads. Dave thank you so much!
A Necrons video would be awesome. Keep up the great work!
Wow...brush control level 1 million. Stunning work.
Brilliant work, didn't realise I could hold my breath for 27 minutes.
Outstanding work and tutorial. I’m new to figurines. I’ve spent 40 years on and off building and painting aviation, cars and tanks. I find painting mini figures a great fun distraction between projects that can take weeks or more.
Monster, precision is absurd and I LOVED IT from start to finish
Thank you
This is really impressive. Unreal how well that is painted. I'll have to keep practicing.
This is hands down the best painting I’ve ever seen ,can’t even imagine how I’d paint as good , beautiful.
Can we also just take a moment to appreciate how far along the space marine model sculpts have come? This painy job is amazing, but it's that sculpt which just allows for paint jobs like this to shine
Holy crap, this is just phenomenal! When I was a kid back in the 90s, this is the level of skill I dreamed of having, and now we can see it in action. Benchmark is set, now I have to practice practice practice!
This is like masterclass painting tutorial which i gotta love coz it gives me a sense of hope and inspiration that someday with practice il be able to achieve at least half of this 😁
Outstanding work!
The best 'Eavy Metal Ultramarines painting video I've seen so far. This would have been perfect for me some time ago, when I started my Ultramarines army. Now, I see that I came to the same process you showed here, so I'm very glad and proud. I can come back to this video every time a need to remember any step of the process. Thank you for your awesome job!
Wow! Your brush control is incredible. Not sure how I have missed your channel, it is criminally underrated for miniatures painting. Thanks for this tutorial!
I just want to say, this is SURGICAL.. I really appreciate the video
amazing ! as always ! so satisfied to watch !
Superb video and the end result is unreal!
Wow, looks so clean.
Content like this is so valuable. Thank you so much for doing things like this for the community.
That is some phenomenal brush control
absolutely amazing
That brush control is jawdropping
Amazing Dave, thanks for taking the time.
Brilliant video Dave! The incredible quality of your painting, the amount of work you put in to edit it all together, the new intro and a cracking choice of music all coming together beautifully in the highest quality painting tutorial.
It is really great to see the Easy Metal process! Thanks!
Such precision! I'm in awe-and subbed!
Oh lordy that is CRISP. Can't wait to see more videos!

Awesome work Dave, it looks even better than the box art to me
Breathtaking skills, thank you so much for sharing your work.
This is absolutely amazing! I'm actually going to head out and pick up some Space Marines now! :D
This is amazing! I didnt think the box art was reproducible but you just showed us how its done. Your Edge highlighting is out of this world!
This is insane. You sir are a master at your craft.
Awesome tutorial 👍
just perfection. really nice job my brudda
really loved this video, very relaxing
Omg your hand‘s movements are soooooo smooth 😮
I've always wanted and wandered how an easier metal painter works and this really is nuts. Thanks for sharing.
awesome as always, thank you for doing this. I learned a lot!
What I'm getting as an overall theme from this tutorial; consistency and practice is key.
Simply incredible! You've got the hands of a surgeon
wow this is fantastic. amazing skill
This is such a therapeutic video, I literally struggled staying awake (in every positive sense of this statement). Beautiful. Hats off to ya mate!
big fan of your work sir! I've been looking for the definitive ultramarines tutorial and shall look no further :)
Very nice and instructive. Ty man! 👍🏻👍🏻
Amo el hecho de que compartas también tu paleta de pinturas de manera tan objetiva, ¡muchas gracias!
being new to the hobby and starting with Ultramarines as my first army, this has been highly educative. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills :)
A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one! Great video!
This is insane 😂 the level of detail.
Best ultramarine video on the internet 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you Mr Gavin ♥
it's...amazing!
Artist at work 👏
Awesome dave me and my lad will be following you . My son is in the shed now getting ready to paint one and he hasn't watched it yet but he's been ask me to find a painting guide the eavy metal way forever thanks
Your highlights are so perfect
I wish my eyesight let me even see half of this stuff anymore. After 30 years in the hobby the finer details are all such a blur and even glasses don't let me see this crispness.
Perfect video, bravo!
Beautiful
Great video , so satisfying to watch
You must have eyes like a hawk for this. A great tutorial.
Excellent mate
I've been looking forward to this one!
Incredible work ! Can't believe that's a size one...
Awesome stuff!
I gotta say this you did a fabulous job it looks really great i wish I had the money and skill to paint like this
Literally stumbled across this from a recommendation from TH-cam.
Wow, Jesus Christ, this is insane.
Best content I think I've seen on TH-cam, your skill is insane.
Thanks and subscribed!!!
