    Today I learned USA doesn’t have Boxing Day and the UK does.....we have it in Canada and I assumed it was a North American thing, but I guess it’s a commonwealth thing?
    Anyway I, like most people probably, thought it was called Boxing Day because it’s the day after Christmas when you box up and put away the Christmas crap. I looked it up and turns out that’s not true. Historically the day after Christmas was when servants and low class workers were given Christmas boxes as thanks for good work the day after Christmas.
    It’s a big holiday here, where everything goes on sale. Basically the same as the US Black Friday (although we have that too recently, but Boxing Day is the big one in Canada).

      It's the first of the twelve days of Christmas leading up to 12th night and most people had that time off and went back tot heir families leaving the rich to fend for themselves, and on the 12th the rich would throw a huge party often called a topsy turvy ball where they would serve the servants before sending them back to work hungover the next morning. Over time it became a crossdressing ball (everyone dressed up in drag) and then what we think of as fancy dress

    There is something I learned during a workshop with Roman Lappat which I would like to share here. But before I start I would like to point out that all the paint on your models is just painted. You will not destroy a model with a bad paint job. You can always strip your model of color or reprime the model and start again from 0, my experience is that you have to really paint very thick to destroy details on a model like this. I have some Space marines which I have painted like 4 or 5 times by now and the details are still crisp and existing, well space marines are not the bar but I hope you know what I mean.
    I can’t really recall where I heard this but I assume it was some ted talk. “If you wait until you are ready for something, you will never be ready” We as human beings will never feel confident to paint a certain miniature to make it justice, just because of the fact that there is always someone else who is better than you are. There is always a new pinnacle which you first need to climb. Perfectionism is such a bs, it only leads to the thin I learned from Roman. Let’s say we paint a miniature until we are satisfied with the result, that point will never come. The problem with this is that we as Human beings learn by doing. Speaking, we get better to paint while we are painting the miniature. So at the end of the process we learned to be better and the beginning of the miniature we were less good. And since we have improved we try to smoothen out the imperfection from the beginning which will lead to that we get better... vicious circle. So there is only one thing which is reasonable, and then accept that you will never produce a perfect piece. Rather learn to appreciate the stuff you learned by painting that mini. And also appreciate the fact that you can now apply those learnings directly to a new mini. Some artists take a new sketchbook and do directly on the first page just some warm-up drills to “mess” up the sketchbook directly in the beginning so they never have to fear to paint something “bad” into it. So please pick up your “nice” models and paint them you will have a lot better time then to keep them in your drawer. As I said stripping is always an option. Testing a paint theme on another test model is one thing but actually testing techniques, I would not agree, just imagine your feelings if you manage to do your first proper Non-Metallic Metal on your pricy Mortarion, instead of some random Boardgame test mini which will dust in the back of the drawer after you learned what you wanted to do. You will always remember this achievement when you pull out the miniature. Also, you are not giving yourself an easy out. Once you started you don’t get the option to stop, put the test mini away and defer the learning until later. No, you have to keep on putting in the hours because you are emotionally attached to the mini, you become accountable. I hope this makes sense and is not a complete brain fart. It’s kinda late, I had a long day, English is not my first language, although I speak it very regularly. I hope nobody feels insulted by what I wrote. Also, Scott did you see the judges line up for world model expo 2020? (www.wme2020.com/contest/)

      The more I learn the more I understand mini painters have so much to learn from classical art. It'd help if people stopped attack "new" techniques as bad just because they were invented with 2D art in mind.

    I def feel the standing out/diverging from the group motivation. When Warcry came out, I really liked the Splintered Fang sculpts and so did abou 3 other people, who all wanted to do the box art or a similar cool tone palette and probably the final, real reason I ended up buying the kit was specifically to paint it in a really warm palette with a different vibe than the other folks at my lgs.

    Hey guys thanks for another great podcast. Did you know you can buy medium and large needle kits for the sotar 20/20? I'm using a medium needle kit and you get less tip dry, needle is much less likely to bend and you can push more paint though faster. Also you can buy a lid to go onto the cup. Much cheaper then buying additional airbrushes just for a different diameter needle. Anyway keep it up guys 😁

I hear that a lot - and as a person who used to initially practice on World of Warcraft: the Board Game minis - I can confirm that there is SO much you are missing by choosing crappy models! I agree with your thesis, Scott. I bought Soul Wars because I wanted to practice dry brushing on the ghosts and edge highlighting on the Stormcast. It's been a lot of fun. I like the models but I don't have an emotional attachment to them, and that has made them much easier to paint than my Lord of the Rings models that I really care about but didn't feel like I was good enough to properly paint.

  • @Sh1neSp4rk

    One thing that's also worth noting about just starting to paint is that stripping minis is super easy. I found realizing this made just jumping in and painting much easier. I've definitely decided something wasn't good enough and gone back to the beginning but if anything it's only ended with better results. Super good practice too.
    In terms of the GSW copyright strike thing I completely refuse to buy any of their stuff because of that move. I haven't seen enough done on their part to resolve the issue in order to win my business.

    I got into painting minis by painting a huge set of plastic cowboys and indians/ ninjas and fantasy plastic people for my cousin for Christmas. I didn't prime them and I used cheap craft paint. I learned a ton and i remember when I started painting real war game minis I was amazed at how much easier it was because the details were so much cleaner.

    I've been struggling with the aspect of "getting out of my own way" with regard to painting models that *do* mean something. Pointedly, they're for Gloomhaven, and will be on the table for some time. The pressure and anxiety created by wanting them to be perfect and to live up to an unrealistic expectation that other players would love them as I think they would, has nearly pushed me away from painting. My first mini turned out pretty well, so I was riding from that high into the next mini, which didn't turn out well at all. It really stuck with me to the point of being corrosive to a desire to keep trying.
    Talks like this, advice from folks like Uncle Atom, Dr. Faust, Kujo, Goober and on and on help more than I think you guys may realize.

  • @FenrisianReaper501
    @FenrisianReaper501 ปีที่แล้ว

    When it comes for random models outside of my army to paint it’s a sealed deal if I look at a model and can imagine a story with the model based off of how it looks. A lot of that stems from that I like making dioramas. Outside of that it’s because I think it looks cool.

      That argument has never made sense to me, I understand the time dilation effect that would occur as one approaches the speed of light, but unless i’m mistaken those same theories say that only energy can travel at the speed of light, and the fact that they exist as physical matter during FTL points to one of two things, either the same rules don’t apply to their universe, or they have found a way to suspend them during hyperspace travel, either of which brings into question wether the time dilation effect would actually occur.

    Time Dilation as you approach light speed. There's a sci-fi book I have called "A Law for the Stars" that brings that up where the, essentially, space cops track both their biological age and calendar age. It comes into play a bit as the main character is effectively only a few decades old, but the bureaucracy that has been continuing on the hub planet is aging by centuries and the divergence in motivations and morals that start to happen. One of my favorites.

    Any chance you guys could post trimmed clips of certain topics during your show? In my case, I usually don't have the time to watch the entire length show, but I still want to catch certain sections or topics, like the title subjects. I'd love if there were shorter highlights I could watch to catch up on the conversations. Maybe just timestamped outline items in the video description?

    Just started watching these while I paint a few weeks ago and it's nostalgic and interesting as the series progresses especially talking about future plans knowing what is about to happen. Back when people were still people and the world started going nuts lol. It's gonna be interesting watching the coming episodes. It's like watching old home videos in a way of friend's before something happened like marriages kids life stuff like that.
    A little about me incase anyone cares....this stuff makes a big deal for me because except for the first month of all this pandemic crap I thought then what I do to this day and I don't care who knows it but it was all bs. Just everything. Still can't believe so many just blindly followed everything knowing full well most of it (not all) but most of it was absolute crap. And still are to a degree. Its a shame. Reminds me of what John was referencing in the news from the previous video about the scale 75 German nazi stuff. Talking about how weird it was that people blindly followed something that crazy.....well what happened this year happened then. You sell fear and it explodes and sheep will follow to the end. I myself never thought our society was capable of something so stupid again but we did.
    Anyway I've said this in a few videos this hobby has kept me alive during all of this. From the pure rage anger and everything that followed this pandemic this has kept me grounded and from snapping. From the masks to not being able to get eyeglasses going to the doctor's for regular issues to losing most of my friends love life social life and everything just because idiots believe in cooties. Lol I'm still pissed at everything as you can see. Without miniature painting and people like you guys I'd probably have snapped long ago.
    Sorry for the book. Just who else do I get to rant to anymore? Everyone i knew is patting themselves on the back for saving millions because they wore a cloth masks lol. Again sorry for the rant and thanks for making these and being alive and making these.

      Hate to break it to you, but these guys aren't on board with that rationale... And as for the mask deal, take a look at India, 4/29/21. The ashes of their people being cremated en masse floating in the air. When one of your healthy loved ones perishes from the virus, perhaps you'll be humbled.

    • @jrseitz21
      @jrseitz21 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UltimateOlive ahh a true believer. Yeah I run into your kind often myself. I don't have to worry about my loved ones having it and being burned in these masses as you seem to think is happening lol. Wth? Channel of TV are you watching lol? I suggest you take a good look around at the actual world around you and gain some real perspective and not just focus on TV. Because I don't know what you are seeing but I whisper the hint to you softly.......nobody's really dying of this virus.... it's all a media panic lie. Now to be fair. Some day the reality of the situation will hit you as well and yea some unlucky people died and that is sad but that's kinda what happens in life. People die every day from all kinds of things. And suddenly saying that every death is all of a sudden because of this covid crap is a little ridiculous especially when the world death numbers are actually lower than they have been in years. So tell me how less people are dying this year during a pandemic than previous years without it? And it's my understanding that India's crewmate there dead anyways. And considering that they have the largest population on the planet....let's just say bodies burning by the thousands is not something new.....that's called a typical Tuesday. But whatever i understand that you are a true believer in the cult of the mask. For the cloth shall save us all. It's a damn shame nobody before the year 2020 ever figured out the magic of cotton was the cure lol. With all our progress and technology it finally took people like you to figure out that a simple peice of cotton would save us all....with magic. Because science and stuff lol. I too have witnessed through all of this that my local cashiers have been dying by the thousands because they are in a high risk environment bodies piling up funerals persecutions line the streets. It's been mass chaos just like on the news. Sad times indeed that so many believe in so much without visual proof. And the best part of it all is that it seems that the true believers in everything pandemic also tend to be people who don't believe in any kind of religion and scoff at the idea that anyone could believe in something so foolish as a religious entity lol. That kills me the most because that is the epidimy of pot calling the kettle black. .....now as for what jon and Scott actually believe? Doubt we will ever really know but if i were a betting man I'd say their closest to my side of the spectrum. But again the only thing that you will ever hear them say is....it's sad. Were they to voice their own opinions on this subject would be TH-cam suicide at this point because God knows how many of their viewers are people like you bunkered down in their safe place watching their videos passing time and basically making their job. It's not worth the risk. All comes down to views and money sadly and I'd probably do the same thing.
      Anyway sorry for the rant but know this. Soon or later just like all things and throughout history the truth of this whole situation will come out in your life time and i really hope you remember people like me when it finally hits you what side you were apart of and what you believed and what you did. There's going to be a interesting shift in the next 20 years ahead for alot of people who blindly believed in all of this because they were told to and manipulated by fear. But on behalf of all of us essentially workers and people who have been dealing with all of this stuff since the beginning I think i speak for all of us when I say thank you so much for saving all of us with your cotton masks and truly from the bottom of our hearts....get back to work already lol. People like you remind me of those few kids in school who were 15 or so and still believed in Santa claus and nobody had the patience or care to break the bad news to you lol. But I guess I'm just that ahole. So you go on believing in your hex bags filled with chicken bones keeping the evil pixies from stealing your soul or whatever nonsense you believe. Best of luck to you and keep on fighting the good fight.
      And my last statement i have to say is this to people like you. If you truly cared about others you wouldn't be thinking right now that you hope i get covid and die to teach me a lesson. And your allowed to believe in anything that you want to. But God help people like you if there ever is a true epidemic because your going to see what true science is about lol. And just how much everything we've been doing this year is a waste of time. You've been lied to my friend. Time to swallow that big pill and accept it like the rest of us. The evidence is everywhere

      @@jrseitz21 I'm not gonna read your whole book, so I'll just say this. I'm a career paid FF/Paramedic and I see it first hand. I wear an N95 mask on all calls and have been coughed on by covid positive patients and not gotten it, so it is working. However, some coworkers and family of coworkers have gotten it, are they just unlucky? I don't know, not for me to say. But I have seen firsthand healthy people deteriorating from the virus. I don't watch TV. I live in a house full of guns and I don't believe in a god of any kind. I know you think you've got the world figured out but the internet is just one step away from the television. And if you knew anyone outside the US or your own little bubble, you may find it easier to believe. Sure, it's not the black death, but if you allow it to run rampant it will. But go on and project what you believe that I believe.

You can't even buy your way into the hospitals now if you have anything wrong with you. You won't treat anybody. Preventive medicine has been thrown out the window with everyone's favorite saying....sorry this is a clean facility....wtf is that? Sorry we don't treat sick people anymore lol. Like seriously? Seriously wtf is that and what do you do all day? 9 times this past year i went to the doctor and 9 times turned away. Wouldn't even give me a chest xray because I'll contaminate the equipment. And I was sick as hell my friend and everytime diagnosed with covid. No tests no examination just covid. 6 months straight. You know what I actually had to the best of my research? Some form of ruptured ulcer. And I was sick as hell. I eventually got better. Heart patients at work or people with asthma i know.....nope sorry covid nothing we can do. I can not describe to you how much of a peice loving person i was until it came to you you healthcare workers. For the rest of my life I'll spit on everyone of you with my dying breath because when you were asked to step up you all backed down and you let people die. Meanwhile on the news we have to hear about how you "hero's struggle " and on TH-cam your dancing in mass groups.....wtf? Meanwhile the world hates on police when in actuality they should have focused on the healthcare workers. And to quote my mother a nurse.....this is a disgrace and am ashamed to see my profession turning their backs on people like this. We would have never done this. Meanwhile i have to come across people like you in comments sometimes saying how bad you have it? Bitch i drive past our hospital every day and ain't nobody there! You closed the doors basically. My bp at home is 132/74.....at any doctors office or clinic I'm rocking 170/90. ......I'm that pissed off at being mistreated. You are making people sick to death and taking people gasping for air and shoving cotton in their mouths killing them and saying it's covid.....bitch you are suffocating people to death. Even the inquisition wasn't that nasty. But you go on pat that back. If its a shitty model you wont take it seriously and therefore you wont improve as fast as you will if you're painting a model you care about and are actively trying not to fuck it up.
    Same goes for tools too. I see people buy shitty cheap airbrushes and it takes them much longer to learn how to use it because it doesnt give a shit whether youre thinning properly or poorly, its still going to give you a bad result.
    A good airbrush wont tolerate your thick, goopy paint and will encourage you to thin the correct way.
