  • RunCam sent us a sample Runcam2 (RuncamHD V2 1080p 60fs WiFi) action camera to test and review.
    This action camera caters to the FPV crowd:
    - 120 degree field of view
    - 1080p@60FPS, 1440p@30FPS, 720p@120FPS
    - lower latency on the analog video feed
    - removable 850mah battery
    - image flip
    - easy to use wiring harness
    - on-screen settings menu
    - Android WiFi app for preview and settings
    - Able to run off a 2,3 or 4 cell LiPo battery
    - Adapter for using GoPro type mounts
    - Digital image stabilization
    - light weight at only 50 grams.
    - Lens has crash protector
    Some stuff we didn't like:
    - No lens cap.
    - Too wide to fit in Mobius pan/tilt.
    - Our sample had an intermittent lock-up problem
    Some flight video included at the end at sunset to test dynamic range and low light capabilities.

    We poor souls who have to wait 30 days after turning over our green backs really do appreciate your honesty when you come across those little glitch's and Mal-functions, I would not mind it when other people receive many items for free in exchange for there review's, just as long as i know , if I make a purchase? the item is going to work properly or else I am compensated , thank you, I still will be purchasing a DV sj4000, a mobius and a run cam 2 based on what i think I know..

      @DaveMerc  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +anyshitt Glad I could help with your purchase decision. Runcam sent me a new one later and it works great. For a hat cam however I prefer the narrow angle Mobius and I wish Runcam would come out with a narrow angle as well because things look too far away for a hat cam on the Runcam2..

    Idk if someone already said this but this is from the manual:
    Warning: this product is not applicable for being used as a Dashcam. Please take out the battery while using USB interface for power supply, so as to avoid damage caused by the high temperature inside the battery.

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheBigTimeKillah I saw that statement in the manual as well. It seems contradictory to instructions that say to charge the battery using the USB cable. Maybe what they are saying is to not charge the battery while recording. Perhaps substituting a super cap for the battery would allow it to be used as a dash cam.

    Any idea how to use The hdmi for for FPV and wifi to be able to turn on recording without access to the button. Im trying to use it inside the body of a plane cockpit

    Great review Dave! This does look like a pretty nice camera. Do you think the issues you had could be a firmware problem?

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheAdkFlyer10 My son thought it was a firmware problem too. If so there may be a easy fix with a firmware update later. Seems to lock-up trying to go into WiFi mode too so it's not just a problem with record mode.

    So I'm bulding a 22 quad. Debating on trying this for both FPV and flight cam. So the million dollar question. Is the latency low enough to be used as an FPV camera?

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bill Sheley For just pleasure flying it should be ok for FPV but for racing a CCD board cam would be preferred.

    I plan on using this on my cyma x5sw which is 2.8ghz, would that interfere with this camera while using fpv? Fyi i have a custom wifi 6dbi 2.8ghz antenna i replaced the original antenna with on the transmitter. Thanks and great vid.

      +dmerc00 I'm soooooooo jealous. It'll be perfect for my SkyHunter instead of a flight cam and GoPro :-)

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vortecks I would think the flight cam and GoPro ought to be a little better. The CCD board cams are better for low light conditions IMO. As long as there is plenty of light the RunCam2 ought to be the more compact solution for Video and FPV.

      +Blue Dreamer eventually I have fond out it is a few issue. Fw 1.2 = you have to enable the TV out by double pressing the wifi button. (or the power button, can't recall now ) Fw 1.3 = no need to perform anything, TV out works out of the box. To make it short: upgrade! damn it took me forever !!! Hope this helps someone.

    hello friend, thanks for the video, I have 2 questions, the first one is, using wifi, what is the max distance to use the phone, i mean before lose the image. and the second is, Can I use a transmitter with the video cable? or fpv is only with wifi. thanks!

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No FPV with WiFi because it only goes a few feet. I use it to change settings mainly.
      Yes you can hook the RunCam2 to a VTX for use as an FPV cam although the video is poor in low light conditions.
      Best to use the RunCam Swift or RunCam Eagle for FPV at this time.

    Interesting video Dave :)
    Sorry to see again you got a faulty stuff :'(
    This is why now i don't buy my camera in first batch, it's a lesson i learned with the Xiaomi YI and the Mobius Lens B! I prefer to wait a little bit before...
    Hopefully they sent this one for you for review but hope these little issues will be fixed for the first customers! Fingers crossed for them :s
    Well i was exciting about this new camera but it looks like the Runcam HD is more cumfortable with the darkness sometimes and the audio recorded is better BUT the new Runcam has for sure a better dynamic range and a better sharpness :)
    Thanks for the review, now i will reconsider myself if i should get one or not! Maybe a couple of months for sure or maybe not ;)
    Have a great sunday

    Shame you didn't know how long to press the power button to turn ON! A quick press does the trick. You don't hold down on the power button - just a quick press. Once the power is on you press the WiFi button and wala - life is good.

    Is there any specific monitor you need to hookup the Runcam 2? I tried hooking the video cable up to a standard yellow composite cable then put it into my receiver, which goes into my TV. Nothing comes up on my screen. Any ideas?

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Eric Anderson You have to have a standard composite video input on your TV and then select that input with your TV remote. Some TV's don't have the capability, others have complex ways of selecting the inputs. Check your TV manual.

    • @EricAnderson89
      @EricAnderson89 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I found a TV with a composite-in port. Thanks for the help! Now I have the G-Sensor and Image Stabilization turned on. Do you recommend any FPV transmitter/receivers for drone flying with this camera? I'm trying to keep it light...

  • @xjet
    @xjet 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I haven't experienced those intermittent problems with mine yet.
    Have you tried a different microSD card?

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +xjet Thanks for the feedback. Yes I tried a different card and tried formatting in the camera.
      The thing is that it doesn't just lock-up trying to record. It also intermittently locks-up trying to enter WiFi mode. Basically it will always power on fine but when I try to do an function afterward it can fail with the power light stuck on or sometimes off. Made it very frustrating trying to do the review.
      Guess I just got a lemon.

    • @xjet
      @xjet 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +dmerc00 LOL... I thought *I* always got the lemons? :-) Having said that... my battery puffed after one day and now won't fit in the camera so I guess I *am* running true to form.

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +xjet I think I got your camera by mistake :-) Btw I tried powering off an external battery without the internal battery and the power light shimmered like it was picking up AC noise.
      Perhaps the internal battery acts as a capacitor or filter for the power supply. Maybe you could try a super cap in place of the battery since it's puffed anyway.

    What tape(s) can you recommend to tape this to a nitro, high wing size 40 trainer that I have that has a film covering like Monokote that won't rip, tear or deform the covering when I remove it? Would that blue painter's tape work? I'm thinking anything else would be a nightmare and thank you. I have a silicone deflector on the muffler's exhaust which is pointed down and away and I was thinking of taping one of these on the CG spot on top of the wing. What do you think of that also? What would you recommend for the aiming if I had it in this spot - straight ahead or how many degrees to the side? EDIT The plane has tri-cycle landing gear and if I remember right, two 3 in and 1 2 5/8 in wheel and maybe the camera could be mounted underneath and flip the image - what do you think? That silicone deflector could then be aimed up and away :)

    this cam is great but has major flaws honestly. I have one that I have been using for two weeks now, have a 60GB chip in it, recorded a total of 12 flights, and was only able to view 4 out of 12 so far. and on instruction manual, it says to save record onto PC after every flight because if you stop it and start recording before saving to PC, the previous recording will not be save... I do that everytime, and I cannot watch what I record. that's a major issue for me. and another thing, the vids I did save once I was able to view the file from folder, I have sound, but once I save it to PC, I get no sound at all... now don't get me wrong, quality is on point, but that's about it. hopefully it's operator error, but I highly doubt that. I constantly read the manual to make sure I do everything correctly. if anyone does not have that issue, please let me know what I'm doing wrong.

    My sample has a stuttering. While playing back the video, about every 5 seconds, it seems to go into a fast forward for about 1/10 of a second.
    Also the audio is really poor...unless you have the WiFi on, then it is really good.

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Howard McQuilkin They say the audio is configured for flight but it's not very good for voice and not very loud either. Stuttering must be very annoying. My sample works great once it starts recording but it only works about 1 out of 3 tries. Once I think it shut off during a flight, not sure what happened there but it was totally off and wouldn't power on.

    • @04red6
      @04red6 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +dmerc00 MI E is doing the same. It will power off and need a battery pull to get it to power back on.
      Also, if I connect to the app and use the app to start recording, and then try to stop recording with the physical buttons on the camera, the buttons don't work. As I recall, none of the buttons work when connected to the app. If you push the WiFi button while connected to the app, the camera locks up.
      WiFi range is about ten feet also.

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Howard McQuilkin Just strange. I was going to test the range but didn't get around to it. Thanks for telling me about the 10 feet range.

    • @DaveMerc
      @DaveMerc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Howard McQuilkin Just tested the WiFI range and found it was about 30 feet with no freezing. After 30 feet intermittent freezing of the video would occur making it hard to use.

    • @04red6
      @04red6 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +dmerc00 Interesting. I tested mine outdoors, after about ten feet it would freeze until I got back closer to the camera.
