Wheatley was designed to have terrible ideas. And what does he go and do? Become enemies with the only person who ever beat Glados. Seems he works as planned.
Chell was the first one to beat GLaDOS because Chell is the only one alive, every other test subject died in their sleep because the life support ran out, but Rattman attached the last life support to Chell
No one realizes this but the announcer voice is the most powerful program in the facility, i mean its capable of switching glados with another core if the protocol demands it
Holy shit that's a good point! So let me ask this why would aparture need glados if they have the announcer ? Maybe the announcer is like a factory default settings just like in phones when data corrupts the last thing that will happen it will wipe all data and resort to default settings. So I think it still didn't happened because wheatly was put in charge instead. And what about the beginning of the game? Before we woke up glados? Well, we were asleep for possibly hundred of years, but the announcer woke us up . But what took him so long? And cores that live in the facility, are self dependent. Now before you ask "but rat man set a timer for us to wake up, but we did wake up the first time , we were immediately asked by the announcer to go back to sleep, meaninghe knew that the facility wasn't operational with out glados in charge. So 2 questions still remain unanswered. 1. why did the announcer woke us up after all this time? 2 . Why didn't he resort to factory default if nobody was in charge.
@@lagbit1789 im not sure if this satisfies your first question but wheatley did mention that the back up power was running out and maybe protocol demanded to wake up the subjects or its just the routine waking up of subjects to prevent physiological damage maybe just coincidence. ***** I think the cores are part of the mainframe. So if it's messed up, there's probably one or more cores involved. For example, the announcer says the central core GLaDOS is 80% corrupt. We know it's her and not the rest of the system, because when Wheatley is on, you attach other cores to increase corruption. The cake sphere from the first game also appears to be corrupt, and it was attached to GLaDOS. Thus, we know there can be some defective, corrupt or messed-up cores connected to the network. That might be one factor that made Wheatley turn into a sociopath.
I believe that glados corrupted the main frame, her hate, and disgust towqrds the frame forced the scientists to shut her down and create MULTIPLE cores. she corrupted her cores, the morality core was bashed until it no longer spoke, even fell off, crippled the anger core, cake core and the other core. then when she woke up, without the failsafes she corruted herself as well as the frame. enter Wheatley, he was, given too much power after being "opressed" by his manager, then felt jealous of chell. too much power for such an idiot.
i'll never forget the genuine feeling of shock and regret putting him in charge. he was clearly an idiot. i didn't expect becoming a good friend of before playing this game.
There is something so chilling when glados says "the engineers tried everything to make me behave, to slow me down". You can almost sense their desperation.
Well, the moron would have to hack into the Aperture Mainframe to be able to control the arm. Then they would have to know HOW to control the arm. Overall, I think you'd honestly have to be a professional hacker to punch her and GlaDOS into the pit.
thebrandonmaster2 I know that. But not all morons are professional hackers. And the arms on a human might not be strong enough to punch down an entire elevator.
This is probably one of the best directed games ever! It's not only the voice work, but the graphics as well. Just see how Wheatly starts puffing up to make himself look bigger as soon as he takes control! Or the subtle change in his eye when the change happens.
No wonder they haven't come with a sequel to this game. it's gonna be difficult to ever top this one. (Also it's Valve we're talking about, but I want to believe what I said has had at least a little role on it).
I don't see why everyone hates Wheatley for this. Valve said he was corrupted by the mainframe. And to dumb it down a bit, that means that any core that's attached to the mainframe is unintentionally corrupted with power. It's not a matter of choise, it's a matter of a glitch in the mainframe. Didn't you guys ever notice that GLaDOS was only evil when she was attached to her body? And how she was unusually nice when she got taken off of her body and got turned into a potato? And then how she returned to her usual attitude when she was put back on?(Hence the mean things she said about Chell in 'Want You Gone?') And then notice how Wheatley was pretty much your best friend all up until he was put on the thingy? You even saw him turn from nice to not nice just a few seconds after getting plugged in! And at the end of the game, after the song, AFTER he got taken off the body again, he stated that he wanted to apologize to Chell for what he'd done, and, in I-Quote "...Not just because I'm(He's) stranded in space..." That was the _real_ Wheatley talking. The only true way to stop any of this shit from happening again would be to fix the godamn mainframe. So see? GLaDOS isn't evil on purpose, and Wheatley wasn't either. The mainframe is the _real_ enemy here.
GLaDOS is a computer, and Computers can't change thier own coding So killing all the aperture scientists was the worst thing she could have done to herself.
The lighting during the exchange of the cores and wheatley's corruption is absolutely amazing, i wish more games did stuff like that to really emphasize the tone
That's not fair to Wheatley. You try getting that much power, and not going power-crazy. Even the best of us, when not prepared for it, will go corrupt from power. Technically, Glados also went power-crazy. Hell, the moral of Portal and Portal 2 is that power corrupts. Valve could've ended the game better. By punishing Wheatley by sending him into space makes everyone assume that Wheatley really did go evil, when the power made him go corrupt. Did you never see the last scene in Portal 2 where Wheatley apologizes? Had he truly meant all he things he'd done, he'd have been plotting revenge on Chell and Glados. (You'll always be my favorite Portal 2 character, Wheatley!)
Makey D Even then actions have consequences. Sometimes you don't get a second chance. Frankly he deserves every thing he got. You can't throw a punch and expect to go unharmed like he did.
Promethius was punished by the gods for giving the gift of knowledge to man. *He was sentenced into the bowels of the Earth and pecked by birds*. I just got a strange sense of deja vu.
@Arceus Legend he was indeed, by Hercules. actually his name is Heracles. and in saving him he shot down Zeus's eagles. Zeus was so angry that he wanted to kill Heracles (who was also his son) but was stopped by Palas Atena who reminded him that he could have not won the war against the titans without heracles's help and he might need it again should the titans escape from tartars. also, she was having a soft spot for Prometheus she was mad at him because she fancied him but she took an oath of celibate and couldn't be with him. and also he was more interested in humans than in romance. so she felt guilty. you know, women stuff. but yeah, it was heracles.
Watching this for the fist time when I first heard him start to laugh manically I was like NOOOOO NOOOOO WAY MAN NOOOO. I always loved that kinda stuff like with the ending of Saw 1 or fight club .
The thing that bothers me most about this is that Wheatley has genuinely good intentions, but because he has been specifically programmed to make terrible decisions as a hindrance to GLaDOS he ends up acting like a crazed power hungry maniac... because that’s the wrong decision to make, just like he’s programmed to do. Notice how throughout the rest of the game GLaDOS becomes more humble and calm without her power over the facility. With Wheatley it’s the opposite. It’s a difficult realisation to come to that by the end of the game you didn’t win the battle. Nobody did.
To me it's natural conclusion. Realize that those cores are in some sense, sentient. So imagine been constatnly mocked and made an idiot his whole life. And now he is in power. Yeah there is no need from more explenation. But i agree he made REALLY terible decision. I mean he could just let Chell go and stay behind testing. I mean that was easiest solution instead making Chell his enemy.

Yeah especially since when disconnected he immediately reverts to his "mellow happy" state.
I really love how the music change during the Wheatley's laugh.

Yeah the Oracle turret
@Arceus Legend and so it was until Kratos ''saved'' him.

Yeah that’s scared the shit outta me i was like finally thanks bud-dy...... how dare you I WANT TO GO HOME YOU DID NOTHING
Raydar what’s plot twist???
The thing that bothers me most about this is that Wheatley has genuinely good intentions, but because he has been specifically programmed to make terrible decisions as a hindrance to GLaDOS he ends up acting like a crazed power hungry maniac... because that’s the wrong decision to make, just like he’s programmed to do.
Notice how throughout the rest of the game GLaDOS becomes more humble and calm without her power over the facility. With Wheatley it’s the opposite.
It’s a difficult realisation to come to that by the end of the game you didn’t win the battle.
Nobody did.
That's a good point. I do kind of want to see who's problem chel is after this game.
No it‘s cause they must test
My theory is that the mainframe is what’s corrupt. They both reacted to power over the whole facility different but similar by demeaning Chell.
