BALI FOR DIGITAL NOMADS: UBUD VS CANGGU

  • It's now been just over a month since I've been living here in Canggu and so I thought it would be a good time to share my experience and compare it to what I experienced last time in Ubud.
    If you're not familiar with either area, Ubud is the region in the centre of Bali that is popular for Yoga, Spirituality and Meditation whereas Canggu is the new kid on the block. Canggu has amazing nightlife, trendy cafes and the beach but it does come with a few issues.
    Keep watching to hear my experience in each.

    I love that this video just happened! I was literally just having this debate with another digital nomad kicking around Bali. I spend a lot of time in Ubud when I'm over here, but I've just started exploring in Canggu as well. Pretty chill spot!

      +TL Travel I think Chris just put our debate to rest here Teri ;) Great info man this is exactly what we have been asking people lately, then your video pops up...it's scary how I think the internet can read my mind!! We have been living in Ubud for almost 3 months but hear so much regarding Canggu. We have a little tot with us but sometimes just having the beach is all you need!

    Yass finally someone talking about this!! This is what I love about Bali, that even though it's a small island, every corner of bali has different vibe, even the kind of people you meet there are different. Like Seminyak is for too-party mode, Sanur is kinda old people's and family place, Ubud can be a lil too "into-meditation" (for people like me), Denpasar is more local (the living cost is much cheaper, has the least foreigners), and Canggu is the right place for me (even though i m also indonesian)! There's always something happening, and i just love the vibe in canggu, the people, cafe, especially in Dojo in which almost everyday they have free ceminars (you can learn from people or give your talk to promote your business for free). So, living in bali is kinda getting to know who you are then you can choose which area suits you most. And dont worry, Bali is small! You can wander here and there easily if you change your mind about staying in one place. BTW, i watched your previous vids before coming to bali and stayed there for 6 months. One thing i like about your content is that your videos are not only about travel footages, but really gives information without us the audience having to watch unrelated content (like so many travel vloggers), not many youtubers put the audience before their selves. So keep up the good work, and looking forward to more stories!

      I did not like Ubud at all. It's so annoyingly touristy.
      Everywhere I walked, people offering me "massage" and "taxi", every other shop is a souvenir shop, cafes with €3 juices, because it's all priced for tourists... huge ripoffs. They would only charge less than $1 for the same juice if they were selling it to locals.

    OK. This report changed my mind about Canggu.. We are well travelled well seasoned couple that don't really want the hussle and bussle anymore, pushy people, over crowding and anything that is intrusive and Canggu sounds like it might be. Ubud actually sounds better (and cheaper) and might be right for those who are seeking a slower pace and a more intraflective lifestyle.. I really appreciate this comparison.. Its very significant for us and helps refine out decision.

    I'll be heading to Canggu tomorrow and will stay there for 2 weeks, to determine if it could be a viable place to stay long-term (6+ months).
    According to some if the comments here, it's become a bit of a victim of its own success but I'd like to see it with my own eyes. I'm considering a set up where I'd live 6-8 month in Bali and 4-6 months in a European city, to keep things a bit balanced.
    Hoping that Canggu could be the place, but also open to giving Ubud a shot otherwise where I've already been heaps of times.

    Thanks for the comparison, Chris! Sounds like neither place has the right mix for some of us, but it'd be great to see a follow up of specific places in Ubud or Canggu that pull in some of the advantages of the other. I'd rather have the great cafe/coworking wifi options in Canggu but with more of a chill Ubud vibe. Not really into the partying. But also not into the Ubud tourist stuff either.

    • @ChristheFreelancer
      @ChristheFreelancer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hmmm, maybe Chiang Mai then? Bali overall is just insanely touristy. It's hard to get a local experience here while still having the comforts of home. (unlike Chiang Mai)

    • @BodhiSoftMobileApps
      @BodhiSoftMobileApps 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah CM would be a better mix for me but I'm thinking Bali for burning season, so maybe the question is where in Bali is the most CM-like in terms of vibe + amenities.

    I was just working from Copenhagen for a month. I tried the co-working locations, but they all closed by 6 PM. That’s only 11 AM in Chicago where my office is. I need to be able to work during ‘normal’ business hours. Are most co-working locations open such limited hours? That makes it hard for folks like me. Not that it will stop me. Just curious what your experience has been. Keep up the great work. My oldest is heading to Brisbane very soon. Sent him a link to your channel.

    Go-jak is not restricted because it's an Indonesian company... it's more the uber and grabs but I never had an issue getting a Grab or a Go-jak bike...and I stayed in Canggu the entire time (Two months ) ...Getting a car seems to be more of the issue, I think because cars can carry more than one person, taking more dollars out of the local taxi pockets but yeah the go-jak is amazing and its cheaper then grab and uber and you can order food or anything you want using the go-jak app...if your in an area where go-jak is restricted its usually mean all taxies are restricted even the local ones...

      Ah cool. Thanks for letting me know. I didn't actually take any Go-jeks while I was here but I just assumed as they are also a ride-sharing app.

    I have watched quite a few of these videos and found them interesting and informative. That being said the focus on South East Asia is massively limiting. I understand the premise - low cost, high quality of life as can afford more. But what about family and friends elsewhere (yes I know this is mentioned whenever pros/cons come up). Realistically many people who want to be location independent with their jobs don't want to entirely up sticks to go pretty much as far away from north America/Europe as is geographically possible. Would be great to talk more about that in my humble view. (And yes I've seen the vids where not in Asia and the other TH-camrs, I'm just sharing a point about the ambundance of Bali etc focused videos).

      Foreigners can purchase leasehold properties or use "hak pakai diatas hak milik" status which means it can be converted to freehold when you want to sell it again to Indonesian citizen :-)

      Tijana M I don’t understand the question about working from home, why wouldn’t you be able to? In terms of the beach distance, just use Google Maps between Ubud and Canggu
