No, Banana Island was not reclaimed from the ocean, it was reclaimed from the lagoon. It is not on the ocean front. It's really an extension of Ikoyi. Growing up in Lagos in the 1970s, the rear of Ikoyi where Banana Island is today was known as Ikoyi Park, a marshy area that was something of a nature preserve. This area was sand filled and extended into the lagoon. This portion of the Lagos Lagoon where Banana Island is located is known as Five Cowries Creek.
Reclaimed from the lagoon or sea, is it not technology that was used for the task? Are you aware that the word Lagos in Portuguese means lagoon. Go and study world geography and history once again. Are you aware that there is also a place in Portugal called Lagos and it has closeness to the Atlantic Ocean? You are very right...my family lived in this area back then and I was born in the Ikoyi area....the area was really marshy but so serene in the 70's.
