Growing up in Lagos in the 1970s, the rear of Ikoyi where Banana Island is today was known as Ikoyi Park, a marshy area that was something of a nature preserve. This area was sand filled and extended into the lagoon. This portion of the Lagos Lagoon where Banana Island is located is known as Five Cowries Creek.
