Very informative. And FYI, I like the fact that your videos feel organic and natural rather than highly edited. Don’t change.
I’m so new to all of this water-colouring painting. Even at 76 years old I’m learning so much from you. I love watching you paint and hearing your conversations. I always answer you when you ask us questions! 😜🥰🥰🥰
😂
Hahaha, yes same here Bev!
Same here Bev,I'm a chatterbox anyway, can you imagine us all together haha in fact just like my art group I'm at now 😂 all the best keep painting x
I do appreciate you painting on all three types of paper side by side. It’s quite interesting to see the differences.
I too have had a fixation with paper since my youth, as well as pens, pencils and markers. I am excited about these new paper choices. Thank you so much for demonstrating them for us.
How fun!! I actually like all three textures🥰 Thank you for the demo and as always, your honest opinions and talent 💖 Have a wonderful day!!
Thank you for the wonderful demo on the Meedan paper….when I first started my watercolor journey, the different finishes, cold, hot, rough confused me about what I should use! THANK YOU DIANE!❤
This is a great demonstration!!! Being a real novice to watercolor, I always thought hot press was better. Heard it somewhere. Now, I know why the paint lifts, puddles, smears, is hard to blend on the hot press!!! Thank you so much for such a clear and visual explanation!
Narrow tapes are use a lot for blocking out areas in acrylics. If the watercolor doesn't seem to seep under much, it could be used in the same way.
This was so helpful! I learn by seeing/watching and I’ve always wondered about the different textures of paper. Thanks Diane!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Very interesting. I loved the blended background and florals on the rough paper. Maybe not the line work on rough. I never thought I’d like to paint on rough paper, but I think I’d like to try. Thanks for this info!
Thank you so much! Yes, lines on the rough are not ideal, as we discovered!
This is very interesting! They all look good in their own way. I have found that brush pens work better on hot press paper. I imagine line and wash would also work well. Any kind of paper makes me happy…me too, me too!
It looks like the paint blends better on the rough as well. I'm ordering some of that. 😊
Oh, I love that 10" x 7" size!
Love the new sizes and variety of surface textures! I think I need some 10x7 for making my Christmas cards this year! I can't wait to try the rough, I was most interested in that one after seeing you test them all out.
Your links worked perfectly. I had the cold press, had to order one of the hot and rough. I see some fun paintings in my future. Thanks for sharing these Diane.
I think each type has its place, it just depends on what look you are wanting to achieve.
Hi Diane, thank you so much for your wonderful video comparing all three textures, that is very informative and helpful! 🥰🥰Hope you also enjoy using our new watercolor paper
Glad it was helpful!
Diane, how wonderful.
I love the examples.
I never knew that hot press made everything look so detailed.
I need to go over to Meeden and order a couple pads of hot pressed paper.
Thank you again for sharing your talent and information with us.
You are so welcome!
Thank you for the journey through the three types. Seeing the colors play side by side gives a great insight about the behaviors. Looking forward to trying each myself.
Glad you enjoyed it! I learnt a lot too!
I like all the different effects of each of the different textures…..I’m thinking of getting one of each to see what I actually like best! Again, thank you for your wonderful demo….it certainly has answered a lot of questions for me!❤
Thank you, this really helped me alot to understand the difference in paper types.
This is very helpful and informative. Thank you for letting us watch! So fun!👩🎨
You are so welcome!
Thank you for that Diane. I never really understood the difference and was confused. I have completely misused and misunderstood hotpress and got disappointing results! I loved the blending on the rough. They were all great in different ways. Your lovely paintings explained it perfectly 😊
Glad it was helpful Hilary, and thanks for commenting, very helpful xxx
Thanks for the comparison. Very helpful!
My pleasure!
This was interesting and helpful! The rough looks like it's rather difficult to work with. I mostly use cold press, but see that the hot press might suit me since I sometimes work small and detailed - and it certainly seems well suited for all the pens you tried.
I’ll demonstrate it again in upcoming videos Karen, and we’ll find out the best way to use it!
🤣Yes! Anything better than doing the ironing🤣
Surprised at the look of the hot press. Will give that a try. The Rough may be fun to play with. Thank you for the demonstration!!!
Have fun!
I like the hot press .I also think the rough looks good 👍
I’m surprised because I’m loving the Hot Press 23:15 best. Second is the Rough. All I’ve used is Cold Press. I’m ready to try the others. Wow. 😊
Thank you for this demo, Diane! I really like the look of the rough, but I think I'm going to get one of each in the smallest size and play with them a bit. I have always loved paper and notebooks too. I have to say, it gave me a thrill when you pulled the tape off. I always love the reveal of the straight white edges. So satisfying!
That’s a great idea, try them out first, they’ll make great greetings cards or bookmarks.
Those papers look nice, expecially with your demonstration. I will look at them in future. Thankyou
Waiting on my order. It was shipped UPS. I ordered later to make sure I would be home for the package. So glad to hear they've expanded the paper section. Thank you for inspiring me to paint today.
Hope you enjoy it!
This was just what I needed. Great tutorial from a great teacher. Love it and will be happy to get these 3 different papers for side my side fun.
Glad it was helpful! Have fun Tracy!
Thanks for the great demo! I have all 3 types from various manufacturers, and use them for different "feels". Hot press is definitely easier to use for pen work. Hot press for depth. I love them all!
Very interesting to have you explore the differences of the types of paper. I just unearthed a pack of very rough paper bought eons ago before I knew anything...will now explore further its use in my work. Also my ‘book genie’ Lauren tracked down a copy of Pull Up an Easel by N.Garbo that you spoke of. Loving it. Thanks, as always. Susan
Oh that’s great, it’s a hard book to find but quite entertaining!
Thanks for the overview Diane. I've been using the cold press for a while and it's great to feel you can afford to use it regularly. The "posher" papers always have me totting up in my head how much I've spent doing my experimenting! Just a funny story about how we sometimes misunderstand what we're doing-when I first started out and was looking for paper I completely poo hooed rough paper because I thought it was called rough because it was an inferior quality for practising on! I think it came from being at school in the sixties when we were given a "rough book" at the start of term to practice our handwriting before submitting our best work in the exercise book. I love rough paper now and will definitely be giving the new Meeden stuff a try. All the best to you and thanks for all you do.
Sorry I didn’t reply sooner Karen, I could have sworn I did reply - I even read your comment out to Tamsin because it was so cute! I know exactly what you mean, we had « rough books » too - you must be from England? Ours had brown covers if I remember rightly, and we had to use every page properly to qualify for a new one when we’d filled one up, do you remember that!
LOL! Of course I remember it all - mine was a Catholic school in Stoke on Trent! Those were the days ( I remember that song too). We were regularly hit with rulers, jam spoons and pumps to put a stop to any inclination to work loosely! :)@@DianeAntoneStudio
Thank you for the demo. Really like the rough. Seems the background blended well. The leaves on the cold press however have a smoother look. So I think what you said at the start holds true….cold press florals et, rough landscapes. Hot press for detail and line work.
Thanks Linda, glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks, Diane. Your demonstration has given me so many ideas!
You are so welcome!
I love the way the paint goes on the hot press paper
I’ve never had a block of watercolor paper. The last time I was at an art store that sold blocks, the Arches block was over $50 for 20 sheets. All I could afford in the Arches paper that day was a 6x10 travel journal in 15 sheets and it was over $20. I’m looking forward to trying Meeden
Demo side by side was very useful, as was seeing same materials applied on the different surfaces. I appreciate the real time painting, appropriate commentary and easy going, natural looking editing (so tired of that quick 5 sec editing these days 🙄) that allows me to see what is happening. Thanks for this video, Diane and Tamsin!
You're very welcome!
Diane, this was a really helpful video. So nice to see the comparison of the three papers and the various end results you get with each. Meeden was kind and smart to send you some of their products knowing that you'd provide a fantastic tutorial for viewers. I appreciate your start to finish tutorial, as I'm sure some people are new to using a block pad and your demo will be quite helpful. I remember long ago when I first purchased one, the instructions were not provided so I had to check out TH-cam for instructions. As always, thank you for explaining things so well.
Hi Carolyn and thanks so much for your comment and your appreciation. Meeden have been very happy with the amount of interest we’ve generated in their products, and we’re happy too because they really are good value for money. I know China is not always universally trusted, but our contact over there is very efficient and pleasant. So glad you enjoyed this one, sending love, Diane xxx
That was such fun. Again I feel a kinship with you--I am acquiring more paper, paint, and brushes than needed but art supplies give me joy. I just finished a fall, floral wreath for my son's wedding and I used my Winsor & Newton, Kuretake, and Viviva paints, pulling the fall colors from all. I can't find the Viviva Fall Colors at last look. I'm inspired to try hot press again because I actually like that pooling/puddling effect. Many thanks from Boston. As always, a relaxing video and time well spent.
Wonderful! Thanks so much for your kind words and I’m so glad you are enjoying the painting and all the supplies! Viviva should have the fall colour sheets in stock. Let me know if you still can’t find them x
Oh and I love the look of your brushes and the combination you have put together for Craftmo
I will order all and give it a try. I like the differences and the hot press is my favorite for this type of painting. The variegated suits me.
Awesome! Thank you!
Ddiane - thanks for this! I think I like the rough texture but I honestly believe the other two are lovely - it all depends on what effect you are looking for,. A place for each, of course!
When you began I wasn’t liking the rough paper but now think it gives a great finish . Thank you for demonstrating on all papers .
Yes, it’s good paper and fun to use!
Thank you, Diane. I haven't used hot press very much, but I hear it is really good for illustrative type painting and drawing. I see that with what you have painted for sure. I think the hot press would be good if you have issues with arthritis as the smooth texture would make it easier to paint and draw. The downside I suppose is the blooms that occur if you don't control the amount of water you use. It seems like the Goldie locks effect, too smoothe (hot press), too rough (rough) and just right (the cold press). I do think it is very interesting for sure how the paint changes on each.
Ha ha, yes, Goldilocks paper, which explains why some people only every use cold pressed.
Thank you, Diane, for the very explicit comparison! I like the rough, but also want to try the hot press. This has been so helpful!
You are so welcome! So glad you found it helpful xxx
Diane, thanks so much for this paper tutorial! The way you went about was excellent. We’re able to see & experience the whole effect of all three of them at the same time. And see all different mediums you used.
Since you love paper so much, I can imagine how you felt when you received all those blocks of watercolor paper!!
You are so welcome Lily, I’m glad it helped! And yes, can’t have too much paper!
I am excited to see Meeden coming out with watercolor paper, I am looking forward to ordering some. Your video was very informative, thank you.
You are so welcome Kathy, glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Diane, thank you for this video. I use them all depending on what I want to do. Your time and efforts in your tutorials are always appreciated and are informative.
You are so welcome!
Great video! I wasn't sure I liked the hot press until it dried. I could find a use for all three. I have never purchased the hot press but I have bought the Meeden and I LOVE it!
Glad it was helpful and glad you like the paper!
Very informative. I like the faint brush strokes you can see on the hot press. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! So glad you enjoyed it!
This demo is so helpful, Diane. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Great demonstration
Thank you for this highly educational tutorial! I learned so much about the three different kinds of paper! Very interesting and hard to know which one I would like the most. They all have their uses as you pointed out.
You are so welcome! I think the hot is great if you are using pens and doodles. And the rough for more dramatic work.
I am new to watercolor and this was very helpful!!❤
Glad it was helpful!
Just wanted to thank you for hosting the Meeden giveaway! I received an email from them today that I won a second place prize due to my purchase of this paper through your affiliate link. 🎉 It was a great thing to wake up to before heading off to my first of 3 infusions this month. ❤ Thank you!
Thanks so much for letting us know that you won second prize! That’s fantastic, I’m so pleased for you! Wishing you best of luck with your treatment, sending you love and prayers, Diane XXX
I’m so glad you did this tutorial!!!
Thank you 😊
You are so welcome!
This was a greatly informative video explaining the differences in the three types of paper. It is really helpful seeing it visually. I tend to like detailed paintings so I am willing to try hot press. I usually use cold press. Thank you for all you do I love painting along with you ❤
Glad it was helpful! I think you’ll like the hot pressed paper. This Meeden one isn’t too slippery either.
I often wondered what the difference was, now I know, thank you so much! My favorite is the hot press paper, gotta get me some lol.
Glad it was helpful! Have fun!
Thank you Diane! I have some Meriden cold press and was very impressed with it, and the price is great! I will definitely be ordering these. And I like the new sizes too! Now to figure out the pens…
Wonderful! Hope you enjoy it Denise! Looking forward to seeing your work again now you’ve finished that **** quilt!
I love how you showed us the comparison between the cold/hot/rough. I only have cold pressed and I'm really liking the hot press paper and rough too. I'm going to buy some right now. Thanks. I think we need to have some colored pencils to do the blending on the hot press paper. But I really love the hot press paper.
Glad it was helpful! I think it’s very nice to use the hot pressed with almost all media xxx
I’m salivating with all this paper! I’ve yet to try Meeden although I’m currently using Boahong and love it. Thanks for this comparison of surfaces.
You are so welcome! Meeden is made by the same people who make Baohong, and indeed Meeden say it is exactly the same paper. Glad you are enjoying it!
Finally. An excellent demonstration of these papers. Thanks so much. Very helpful video. 😊
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for commenting xxx
Very good demo Diane, thanks. I'm definitely going to try hot press now!
Have fun!
The hot press would give me an easy shading effect. I really like the look
I want to try rough paper now. I find that the colours were more vibrant and also that they bleed into each other on the back ground better. The hot press allows very nice definition too. Oh dilemma. That should be fun to try them side by side like you did. I like that exercise Diane. Thank you
Yes, I definitely found that helpful myself too. Worth the investment - you’ll use all the paper soon enough!
Thank you for the demo, they all have different benefits and would love to try the rough one!
Glad you enjoyed it, you’re right, they are all worth having!
Thank you for doing this review. I’m trying to find the best one because I understand how important it is to have a great watercolor paper. I’m a beginner but I’ve listened to lots of watercolor videos including LOTS of yours. I love the way you approach your reviews. No nonsense or drama; just great information❤
Glad it was helpful! One of the reasons I recommend Meeden paper is because it is good quality and won’t hold you back as you practice, and you needn’t worry about “wasting” expensive paper while you learn x
I have Meeden hot press paper on it way 😊 I love this demonstration ❤❤❤❤
Very helpful. I think I like the cold press best.
This was a great demonstration! Very helpful!
Thanks fir showing us the differences. I finally got some tough paper, but haven’t tried it yet. I’m going to get all three types and see what I like the best.
Great idea Kathy, best way.
❤ Thank you Diane 😊 you are a treasure. Good demo about paper
Thank you so much! So glad it was helpful!
I would use the smooth for colored pencil I think.
I’m so excited to see this video!! I’m ordering some paper!!
Yay! Thank you!
I definitely will be trying the Hot Press Paper.
That was really interesting, Diane. I'm so glad you've tested out the hot press paper for us! I've often pondered getting some and now I'm pretty confident that i shan't like it as much as cold press and rough, so thank you, Diane for saving me that expense!...
Hopefully I'll get to paint your fabulous pumpkins from last year soon - they're all drawn ready to paint but am having trouble finding the time!
Thank you for this lovely, chatty n informative vid.
Love Mel xx 🍰🌻
Ah, you might be surprised by this hot pressed paper Mel. It’s actually really nice to use with pen over the top of the paint, because it is smoother, but it isn’t as slick as some of the hot pressed I’ve come across. So glad you enjoyed the video! Hope you’ve seen tonight’s as well using the hot.
That was a very helpful demonstration, I'm liking that rough one a lot. Thank you so much 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Glad it was helpful! I’m testing it again on Friday.
liked your explanation of the different papers AND you new line of brushes.
Thanks so much!
Thank you for this great tutorial. I'm sold now on getting Meeden now that I see they are 100% cotton. They look like good paper to practice on.
Yes, I like this paper and I definitely recommend it for beginners and more advanced painters as well x
I find this helpful and artistic. ❤
I'm so glad!
Yes! Forget the clothes but take me to either an art supply store or a hardware store or a book store!
Oh yes, I like hardware stores, the old fashioned sort where they have bags of potatoes, rolls of wire and chickens all mixed up together!
@@DianeAntoneStudio you’ve got me there but I bet that would be an experience! 🤗 I do remember the ones with oiled wooden floors and ladders that went to the ceilings on walls full of shelves of merchandise…I remember the wonderful smells of fresh lumber and so many other items…long ago.
I really like the rough press!! Then the cold then the hot. But I use cold press and have never tried the rough. But I just may...
Thank you for that wonderful lesson
I have just purchased a block of cold press paper - still to try it. Thank you for this Diane.
Wonderful! have fun!
I really want to try the rough to see if I can get a more impressionistic feel.
Very informative video, thank you. It was really helpful to see the impact of each painting, of how the paint reacted to the different papers and the different pens you used. I really liked the smooth clear look of the hot press and how the paint reacted on the rough. I am also the same with paper, books, notebooks, pens, any kind of stationary really. I can’t stop buying notebooks and now watercolour paper! I think I need to purchase some hot press to try out now too 😁
Glad it was helpful! Yes, this hot press is different from many other types I’ve come across, and I think it is better for our purposes, as it is very paint friendly. Well worth trying it out and seeing if you like it - definitely better for pen work than the rough, for example.
That was very informative thank you Diane. I’d often wondered if there was really that much difference between papers and now I know! Not a massive difference because all three that you painted were lovely but I did keep being drawn to the hot press for some reason 😊 It just seemed ‘neater and more precise’. Thanks Diane X
Glad it was helpful! Yes, it is more precise, definitely. Some hot press is hard to manage, but I’m pleasantly surprised by this one.
Thank you. I understand the papers I have been using better and can choose which to use to its effect.
Wonderful!
How exciting all that paper 😊
I know, I dreamt about it!
I think you should buy one of each! Then chose the one appropriate for your subject. The price is certainly fair.
Very informative tutorial ! 😁XXXOX❤️❤️❤️
Totally agree Posie!
@@DianeAntoneStudio I gave myself a present! They delivered the “hot-damn”, Whoopi-kyeaaa, kind of present! The BIG pallet! Excuse the language, but I can’t wait to fill with some Needen paints plus Q gold, potters pink, buff titanium buff and favorite blues! Watch me go now!🤪
Thank you beloved friend!XXXX❤️❤️❤️
I'm a big fan of hot press paper anyway after rebelling at my art group when I was told to only use cold press, I loved this demo, I may even get some rough.I went out to buy some pens yesterday I was bowled over by how much they have gone up in price and how much the prices vary and one of them has stopped working already, they want you to use the high street but they don't do themselves any favours ,Thank you Diane ☺
Hi Anni, it’s so true. The high street prices here are crazy, and we don’t have a proper stationers in our local town at all any more, it closed during Covid and became an opticians (to service the epidemic of short-sighted children…) I don’t have any option but to buy online. Sad but true. Do you have WHSmith where you live still? When I left Exeter the one there had gone all funky.
@@DianeAntoneStudio Hi Diane yes we have WH Smith , Iv not been in there for ages, funny enough I was in ASDA supermarket yesterday and they have fine liner pens in there at brilliant prices , so if you know anyone here that can go in and have a look for you its well worth it x
that was very helpful to me, thank you Diane
Glad it was helpful Yvonne!
I enjoyed this demonstration very much. It’s a great idea to lay them side by side and paint on them all at the same time. The “feel” of the paper would be very obvious. I will be ordering some of the hot press and rough press, I always love cold press and have some.
Glad it was helpful! I think this hot press is very painter friendly. Tomorrow I’ll test out the rough again and do a video for Friday. I’m pleased so far! The cold press is also good, I’m so glad they’ve added the other two surfaces x
@@DianeAntoneStudio I did order the two I didn’t have, but they were out of stock! Your video must be working for them! Ha, they will have more soon, I’m sure.
Very interesting. Great info. I think I prefer hot press! Thank you ❤
You're so welcome!
Thank you so much for this lesson.
You're very welcome!
So helpful! Thank you, Diane!
You are so welcome!
For me the compromise works fine now. :)
If only my finished pieces looked as good as your ‘demos’!!😊
Oh thank you!
