Dear Diane, your videos are like a breath of fresh air. You don't talk down to your viewers, you don't lecture or judge everything you do is with honesty and love. When you explore the medium you're using we explore with you and when you feel inspiration getting a bit thin on the ground we empathise with you and watch to see how you resolve that situation. Thats the perfect way to learn - seeing someone else overcome that challenge. I make dioramas, sometimes the ideas are there in full form ready for me to get stuck in, other times they aren't. These projects that lack the initial spark of inspiration often turn out to be some of the best I have ever made. Things evolve as I go along and like painting, if a little blob occurs, I use it as a "happy accident" as Bob Ross would have said, and I work around it or it evolves into something else. It is always amusing and informative seeing you do the same and your finished paintings are not just works of art but lessons in the making. Thank you and all your occasional blocks as and when they appear - because that is what makes you the perfect teacher Diane we can see and hear someone else ( you) dealing with the same frustrations as we do.

Thanks so much for this wonderful comment. I really appreciate every word and and so glad you enjoy the videos and find the way I do it fun and helpful - that really means so much, as does being put in the same paragraph as the wonderful Bob Ross! So glad you are enjoying the watercolor journey and hope to be part of it for you for a long time!

You have so much wisdom from your followers…so I will try not to add to it. However, repetitive as this is, How sad that some people need to dump their anger, frustration, pain etc on another person…what an awful way to live. You spread joy, whimsy and compassion with your work and that gives it great value.
Don’t take the sad persons pain on yourself. It’s not yours. Paint a cheerful little bird or something instead. Yes, the world is a scary mess right now. But painting, card making, etc puts kindness back out in the world and that’s good. We can’t control the huge mess of the world but ewe can resist allowing it to contaminate our own space.
You are gifted, caring and help the universe ( and people like me) just by being your own lovely, talented self…so bless you!,
      Hope you are feeling better😊

Firstly a BIG thank you for doing what you do. For every person who sends a negative comment there are countless people who love and appreciate what you do. There is just no accounting for some people’s behaviour or lack of plain good manners. I could not do what you do, my skin is far too thin. At an age of over seventy I am new to u-tube and the internet and I feel as though I’ve stepped into a wonder world, where art is concerned anyway. Many many years ago whilst I was at a pastels course a bout of depression struck and I was simply unable to touch the paper with the pastel but watching you today reminded me of how I used to gradually get past that by just splashing colour down in a random fashion. It really helped as I find using colour very difficult when depressed. I find watching you very relaxing, therapeutic and has revived my urge to create art. You don’t rabbit on, believe me, I know a few people who DO rabbit on. Also your Pommie accent is NOT stupid, it can’t be because it’s like mine!! Ha ha. Please keep doing what you’re doing, it’s gold, it really is. Lastly, when you were saying how your work reminded you of a railway network I was thinking the same thing and it brought back a lovely memory of the station master whistling cheerful tunes whilst we waited for the train to London. Thank you so much. ❤️

Isn't it a shame that we feel "not good enough" at times. It is totally unnecessary ever to judge ourselves, we are who we are and our skills or interests are unique as are our looks and feelings. The funny thing is sometimes it is other artists who critique harshly. I was once put in my "artistic place" by a fellow artist at an exhibition ( he was actually the chairman of that art group at the time). I work with pastels and realism- landscapes. He worked with oils - abstract/colourist. My work was labelled as "commercial" by him - (when it sold - note), he claimed his was a work of art that only people who had a deep grasp of or abstract art would understand and purchase, he was happy to wait for a sale to the right person.
In my humble opinion if you look at a painting and you like it its good, and you buy it if you can pay the price, you don't need to dress it up in the emperors new clothes so people have to feel they have a special elitist insight by purchasing it, and hang it like a badge on honour on their wall - a sort of nudge nudge wink wink for those in the know!
That man made me feel inadequate, shabby cheap and amateur. But I soon pulled myself together when I remembered Constable used to paint commissions and ensure his work had kerb appeal he knew being elitist didn't pay the bills.

I have learned many things from you. You are my go to when I want to really enjoy what I am doing. One of the main things I have learned from you, is to work through the painting to the end, even when I am not happy with how it looks at the moment and be rewarded with something very pleasing. My goal is to be more like you in painting and in life. Thank you.

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +10

Hi Sienna, this is also something I’ve learnt relatively recently and am so happy to share it with everyone! Every painting has a stage where it suffers from the “uglies” - like some dogs, we have always had Keeshonds and at about 9 months old they look like ugly aliens, before they finally mature into beauties! I think it’s the same with paintings sometimes/often!

    • @LH-minis
      @LH-minis ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@DianeAntoneStudio I was one of those (not a Keeshond,) but definitely looked like i could have been related to Shrek, as a child Diane!! And my beautiful granddaughter looked like a little piglet as a baby, she is now gracefully blond, looks like a nordic ballerina (she's 8 y). So I agree with you - everything has an ugly stage and my paintings also evolve through it or not as the case maybe. You teach us how to get out of a tight spot when one of your paintings is at a Hmmmm.... moment. Then as quick as a wink you do a bit of something wonderful and its back on track. That is so helpful to us all - we each have a different trick up our sleeve and its lovely to share. Thank you Diane.

Story: When it was time to create a book of Tasha Tudor’s works, her nephew, who had finally convinced her to let him do it, went to her house to collect some paintings for the book. He knew what was good and how valuable things were. When he got to her house, he found her going through her paintings and anything she didn’t like, she was throwing them in the fireplace. He was horrified! But couldn’t convince her to stop and had to sit by and watch thousands of dollars of paintings go up in smoke 😳😱🥴😢😔 So I’ve decided, that even though I may never be famous like her, I’ll let the kids decide what they’d like to do with mine. Poor things 😂

Dear Dear Diane.....please please don't throw away your paintings! My mom was a watercolor artist, who passed 22 years ago from lung cancer....the legacy of the watercolor paintings she left behind are treasured immensely by all of her family! Your family will treasure your work when you are gone, and that's one reason I'm trying to do it, as I don't have much else to leave them. Sometimes, I wonder if we humans become blocked because of stress and too much pressure to create. Since you are on TH-cam and trying to produce art for many, many other people to watch, you are under a lot of pressure. I can completely understand why that could cause "burn-out" after some time and then you top it off with stressors in life....I just think that can cause blocks for people. You are doing a great job and I would hate to see you get so discouraged that you stop creating. I believe we are meant to create and some people don't really understand that (I think many are men). My husband was an art major, and now he won't do his art because he doesn't think it's important....that's wrong! Art is very, very important and creativity! Just had to tell you how i feel.............please, please don't throw away your art ...hang in there!

Tell your husband to please start painting again…it does matter! I am 80 years old and just started back painting about 18 months ago after ignoring my art for years. I am happy as a lark with my art work whether it is good or pitiful, it is mine, all mine and no one can take that away from me. Painting is an outlet for emotions sometimes. Our country has major problems, our capital city is in shambles and I can’t help with any of it other than offer prayers. So I go about my day taking care of hubby, our mini-Dachshund, and the house and paint until the cows come home! Dust on the tables does not bother me. Low lights hide it anyway. I used to think hormones would be out of my mind and body by this age but I think they will rage until I turn to a dust all. Some days I grit my teeth as I do what needs to be done then I go paint something and my jaw loosens magically.

I think each of these would be pretty as cloth design. The colors contrast, being opposite on the color wheel, but have so much appeal to the eye. I remember in elementary school, when no one could draw with perspective or accuracy, the teacher would tell us to scribble, dab, or dot and use our imagination to see what shape or idea we could make of our work. Somehow, we lost that growing up. These techniques call our brain to creative inspiration, not copying nature or memory of shape, etc. Really, this is great! I like both designs!!!

Thanks Tacy I really appreciate your constant support and I’m sorry for what you’re going through - I’m sure it’s harder than you are able to say. I’ve spent a large part of my married life in different countries to my husband, so this is not an unusual situation to find myself in, yet every year that passes I feel less happy about the separations. He doesn’t have good health and can’t really look after himself. Hey ho, as we say, or ho hum, must just make the best of it I suppose! Good luck with your move! Sending love xxx

I have all the paints, brushes, paper and haven’t painted in probably seven years. Haven’t watched TH-cam since Covid restrictions loosened. About two months ago I started watching TH-cam again and one of the first channels I watched was yours. I was so thrilled to see your loose and easy style and thought, I can do that. And I have been. I want to thank you for your channel and all the time and work you and your daughter put in to your content. People have expectations of others (you) that have nothing to do with the presenter and which can never be met. Hard to do, but let it roll off. I’m not unsubscribing and will definitely be watching much more of your work. Thank you for your inspiration.

Oh goodness, dearest Diane, I can hear the frustration, the touch of anger and the bit of sadness in your voice.
Please allow me to tell you that I am currently in the very same place. But you my dear friend are at the very least, doing something about it! You are putting your brush in the pigment, putting your pen to the paper and you have inspired me this very minute to go and fill my jar of water and to do the very same!
Cancel you?? Absolutely Not! Do good friends abandon each other when times are tough? Of course not.
And yes, as this film progresses, I hear the calmness returning and the anger ebbing away.
Perhaps you won't be painting the happy sheep today. But, tomorrow is another day.
Thank you for inspiring me to pick up my brushes today. You are exactly the medicine that I needed. Wishing we could be sharing a cup of tea together and painting some bit of nonsense.
That is what good friends are for!!

Ice cream comes in 31 flavors, give or take a few. Not everyone wants strawberry ice cream or buttered pecan, but that won’t stop us from eating the flavor we love. Let them eat their flavor and we eat our flavor…everyone is happy. And no one can bad mouth us about our preference! Some love art that is just color slung on a canvas, some love intricate tiny brushstrokes on a flower, some love swirls and circles, some don’t care for art at all. It is what makes the world go around. Take care of yourself Diane. Have a cry if necessary, go hug a chicken or one of the sheep, talk to the animals, pick a bouquet and put it on the dining table. Do your exercises so you can pick up that 7 pound ceramic palette!

I paint for joy. I am at this point still so bad at it that I love the most is the vibrant colors to paint with so I can focus on their beauty instead of my skill level. I can see myself doing some of the exercises that you did in this video to learn how to better mix my watercolors.:-). I am sorry to hear that things have been hard in your neck of the woods. They've been a bit rough in my little mini world. My dad went to meet Jesus face-to-face about 3 weeks ago. Well I am very happy and joyful for him I am still trying to find my sea legs in this new normal I live in until we meet again.
Thank you for your banter with the camera. It is natural and makes me feel as though I am watching you paint and you're just having a discussion. Thanks for sharing your talent with the rest of us. Blessings.
    Addendum:
As I continue to watch the video and the embellishment of the photocopy and see original and the other half sheet I thought they all looked beautiful. When you first embellished with the dots in the lines then went back in and added more paint. I thought did it look like an apartment building with everyone's clothesline hanging out and how that connected all of them. And then you started adding the spirals and using the white pen and addition and then I thought it very much look like traveling. I was vigorously nodded my head when you mentioned it kind of look like rails from the railroad. And I loved how you practiced on a photocopy before you went back to the original . That is something that I will use in the future . thanks for the tip . I also enjoyed seeing the leaf pattern idea. Again thank you for sharing your talent with the rest of us and helping us learn the skills that will help us when we feel blocked or in times when we need to decompress from stress. I hope is you finished your video hope that as you finished your video your heart was a little lighter. Thank you for editing it and sharing it with us.

That’s probably not an option for you, but maybe you can symbolically trash the haters and focus on your huge fan base who would happily watch you wash windows or mop the floor. The thing that sets you apart is your personality; the paintings are a bonus.

Diane, I completely agree with your comments about the problems of being "blocked" as an artist, and I feel sure it happens to all of us creatives at some point. I make jewellery for a living and sometimes I force myself up into my stydio despite being unable to create because oh, I don't know, the muse isn't showing up at that moment, or because its the second Tuesday of the third month or whatever, it doesn't matter one bit. And when I feel like that, I sit at my desk and I tidy up the God almighty mess that it always is: and if I ever finish tidying the desk I move on to other bits, arranging and cataloguing stuff, then if I get really desperate I will actually hoover and dust but that's really when things are dire (!!). It makes me feel better because Im still connected to my happy place, to my beautiful stuff, to the things I've collected and love. Then...bit by bit I begin to mess about, rediscovering little components I've forgotten about and at that point Im on the cusp of creativity. Sometimes it takes weeks and all Im doing is tidying up. My husband is not creative at all and he can't understand why I can't just do my damn job, but we all know its not a job is it? Having done enough tidying or fiddling around with things - Ive got 2 new kittens too so they're a fab distraction, at some point creativity turns up again. I understand the connection of mood and feelings abd external events, those can be incredibly disruptive too. Sorry for the long message, just wanted you to know I feel like you do sometimes. You make me smile, thank you for being such a lovely person x 🇬🇧🌼🐈🐈🐾

@DianeAntoneStudio Oh, Diane, What an intensely difficult happening to be working through! So close to home! You have great strength to try and meet it this way, and dedication to continue giving of yourself to your students and followers despite the feelings which such an act engendered. Thank you. Or possibly some reconciliation in the community … But in the meantime, let yourself
b-r-e-a-t-h-e! We, as a humanity, are going through a major change, and so many cannot bear the thought of the responsibility we face, but we must endure the tension for the sake of future life, and Art making is crucial for this transition. Love to you. Courage! Caite, Massachusetts

Hello, i hope you are well. I just decided to put in my 2 cents ( even if we don’t have cents anymore) !. I enjoy your videos no matter what mood you are in! In a way it makes me feel not so alone when other artists have blocks !. And no matter what anyone says you are never boring!! Today i went with you from feeling a bit lost, “what to do, where to go from here… to a hint of anger, which was nicely disposed of through scibbling. Then you put paint to paper, and in the end, as you were putting on the gold paint, i noticed you were calmer. And in the end both the paintings looked good, each different but still both “artistic in their own way “. On another point i have suffered from allergies all my life, so i do understand what you are going through. And i found the link between allergies and depression very interesting. I also believe that since artists are sensitive (wether we admit it or not,) we are more subject to the moods around us, ( i try not to listen to the news as much as i used to because the world is going to h**l in a basket) ((i might not have that expression quite right🤷‍♀)). I also find the weather a big influence on me.
All thatto say, when i see a notification of your video, it’s like a phone call from a friend! Keep up the good work ! As a small child i was very competitive and my father would tell that the only one i should compete with is myself. And all these years later, when i start to compare my art work to others, i remember his words, and it does help (somewhat…)

Hi Ann-Ingrid (not sure if that’s how you like to be called… :) and thanks so much for your 2 cents which are actually worth a gold-mine! Thank you for sharing the wise words of your dad, who is right but it’s very hard to not compare, we are built to compare things and it’s automatic, but it sure needs limiting sometimes! For the sake of our sanity! Regarding the allergies, it sometimes feels as if everything is slowly being forbidden to me! I have had to give up anything with gluten in it, all chemical additives, perfumes, preservatives and colourings etc, many different foods, can’t touch latex, and more, and now the pollen allergy blocking my ears is the last straw! I try to ignore it and live a ‘normal’ life though, and I know I am lucky to have the things I have, amongst so much devastation around us. The best thing of all is people like you who make me feel that I make a difference to their lives. I will do this as long as I possibly can, you can rely on that! Sending you love and blessings xxxDianexxx

Why do people feel that they need to post mean/negative comments. They have a choice. If they don’t like what you (or anyone else) do, they can go to a different TH-cam video. Sometimes I think people are just so full of themselves that they are close minded and feel that they are superior. In my mind, it just shows me that they are less of a person. So for people like me, please keep doing what you’re doing.
I love your style. It gives me “permission” to play. It is more about the process than the outcome. I am a beginner and I’m also in my 70s. I do not have any aspiration of seeing my work hanging in a museum. It is just to foster my creativity. My point of you is that creativity is essential to good mental health.

Hi Diane, good morning from Southwest Florida (fyi, I’m an underground Independent/Democrat in unfriendly territory). I understand how much the heat can affect you. The temp here already feels like it’s 103 degrees Fahrenheit, at 11:am. (A girl hint - put a frozen bottle of water between your boobs 😊. You want to cool your core asap). I will finish watching this great video later. Have a good day 🌺

I love love love this video, Diane. So full of inspiration. I have been drawing, sketching, and painting since I was young and I too have walked side by side with my friend/foe Arty Block. Sometimes for years. Thank you for sharing this video about the darker (yet still hopeful) side of painting. Sending lots of sunny skies and hugs from Arizona, USA

Bonjour Diane! Thank you for yet another great tutorial. I'm going to give you a bit of a telling off though........ YOU are a REAL artist! Stop selling yourself short! You have so many followers who learn from you, are inspired by you and who admire you! I look forward to watching your videos which usually occurs whilst I'm getting ready for work and you always get my day off to a great start! This piece turned out looking a lot like a Klint peice don't you think? Love it ❤

I think you have painted your block, Diane! A beautiful n colourful picture of a Brick Wall.
You started with the bricks then painted in the cement between them and covered the 'wall' with swirls n dots of the train system that will whizz you past your Block.
That's my take on it anyway!
You are a Wonderful artist Diane and we, your fans are staying with you because we adore you. Hoping very much things will improve for you asap. We're all here with you.
Love, Mel in Devon xx 🍰🌻

I love it! I feel relaxed just watching. Yes I have a Tomboy set which includes the one you're using. My set also has a bit of a looser tip and it's blue. Can't tell which you have, the black is stiffer and blue is looser. It also comes with a grey one which makes for wonderful shadows next to the black lines. I also know the Pink Floyd song The Wall. I'm a late blooming die hard Floyd fan. Oh, I just bought a book called Painting Calm and the painted samples inside are beautiful and loose. Reminds me of your paintings. Don't know if you have the book, but I'd recommend it highly. Just up your alley and mine too. Don't worry about the negative Ned or Nelly. They were likely having a bad day too and wanted to take it out on someone. Hate to see you down. Know that I watch a large portion of your videos and love the paintings, especially the birds. I love birds. And nature. I hope you feel better after doing this painting. I found it calming and interesting too. I've done a couple of neurogenic paintings and had fun doing them. Some scientists have suggested a whole routine with them including sorting thru your life, asking yourself questions, all while being in a Psychologists care. Mmmmm. I didn't going that far, just had fun doing it. Some of the paintings I've seen under that guise are quite elaborate and beautiful. I was amazed. I know Shayda from YT. Her paintings are pretty and she really takes her time. I got a little bored about 2/3 of way thru, but then she went faster and I enjoyed it a bit more at this stage. Hope it's cooled off there. I live in N Arizona and we've had markedly temperate weather this year. By July it's usually unbearable outside except after you've been shopping in a very cold store-lol. Thank you so much. XOXOJANE

THANK YOU for being real! Truth , honesty, is so refreshing. And I learn surprising little things when you ramble on in this suppressed-anger mood.

I too have a dog with dementia awakening me at 6:30am. It’s almost time for him, to go 😢. Like all of the above comments, I value your work and your talks as well. Now I will have to find out what’s happening in Brittany!

Thank you for doing this video even though you could have just as easily not done it. Now I can think of you when I have lots of excuses that stop me from getting in the studio. I will save this and play it whenever I am blocked. 😊

Im sorry you are having such a bad time. Sometimes this stuff just gets into you. I just painted my second copy of the 'lovebird'. I used Bee Inspired mixed-media paper, its very white and smooth and it functed well. Then I switched the paints on the B-side. I'm wondering about the color order the paint came in and if they should be different in a pallet? Also, I'm trying to put 24 Paints in an 18-well pallet. What I'm thinking of doing is creating a separate pan set of the 6 'leftovers'. They will fit in the pallet in one of the mixing trays and I can pull them out and take them with me.

That tray is super awesome And I'm glad you are using that Meden paint set to fill it. I mentioned before that I bought it on your rec as my 1st set of tube wc paints as a newbie and am having fun. Since you're feeling like a miserable old cow may I join you in the barn for a bit?🙃I have been hit with issues of my own lately that have literally taken the wind out of my sails! At 75 I need all the wind I can get and feel I'm winding down quite a bit 😐I hope things start to look up for all us....soon! One little trivia question: Those built in marks on the tray that stick out at intervals....do they mean anything? The painting is delightful. With those lines through it it was kind of looking like some graphics of the 50's/60's. Thanks for sharing and have a good rest of the week and get rid of the nasty comments. You don't need them, your channel is loved in abundance!! 🤩

I’ve stuck with you throughout the entire video and want you to know that I’m fascinated with this process. And, I really like the result. I hope “things” in your world improve. Also, please know that I appreciate and applaud you for being so honest in sharing your feelings.

I’d donate your paintings to st Vincent’s. Then people can enjoy them and frame them. Your name will shared, your art will continue to inspire. ❤ don’t destroy it.

I'm sorry to hear of your "off day" and it really just irks me that trollers should even have an opinion. If she thinks she can do better, than let's see her put up her TH-cam channel. I commend you and feel like you're our friend sharing your life stories with us, your happy times, your not-so-happy times...that's what makes us human, to engage in conversation and show and feel compassion and empathy. Now about your art piece, and YES, it is a piece of art (please don't ever say it's not), but so when I first look at it at the end of your video when you were showing it with the other leaf piece, I get a feel like I'm back in early '60s. It is really cool looking and I love the gold frames around the rectangles. Showing your art journey helps me feel like I am human too and while I'm not a real good artist, I know I am getting out of it what I want. Can't wait for your next tutorial! ❤❤❤❤❤

Sometimes we wonder what we are doing and what’s the point?
We need to do what inspires us because we inspire without realizing.
Husband, he doesn’t get it, he saw something in you that attracted him.
    Keep moving forward.

Scarlet would say “I won’t think about it now. I’ll think about it tomorrow.” And “fiddle dee dee.” I’ve watched the movie dozens of times, and by coincidence, just started rereading the novel. I felt so sad watching your vlog when you sounded like you were going to cry. I cried along with you. I stayed for the whole vlog because I enjoy what you teach me and I like your voice. I have started using small dots in my painting and you were the inspiration. Take care.

We don't need no education... especially not from mean people on the internet trying to "educate" people about the "correct way of living" - meaning their way. If they are so clever and know how one has to paint (knit, craft, whatever) and how to run a YT-channel then why don't they have an own channel to teach people?
I think I may have to steal your idea of making a copy to try out ideas instead of "ruining" the original.
Hopefully you feel better now and you continue sharing your thoughts and ideas and show us* your paintings💜
(* I know I can't speak for others, I'm just pretty sure I'm not the only one happy to have found you on YT.)
