    16:55 "it's very destabilizing if every time you pick up a paint brush you think you've got to produce a work of art. Just play." This is probably one of the best lessons for beginners, like myself, to take to heart! Thank you!

    Oh, Diane, you made me laugh today. As I sat ripping out the sewing mistakes I made this morning. Not the first, definitely not the last. Thanks for a light hearted look at painting and a nice reminder that not everything you do needs to be a “work of art”.

    When I hate something I’ve painted, I think it’s because I’m such a novice. Then I hear you voicing the same thoughts and watch you push through anyway to produce another lovely piece and I realize this is part of the creative process. Thanks for normalizing our self-doubts and nudging us to keep going, Diane.

    I agree Diane...when you put a painting in a frame it changes it and dresses it up. I love to change the colors of the mats and see the effects with the different colors. These pink flowers are so pretty and I think fun to do as well! Thanks for your video....lots of FUN!!! You make me smile and laugh! :)

      Right? It's a great idea! As soon as the painting was in a frame, I could see how it would look pasted to the front of a card! Also, FYI, the Dollar Store is a great source for small frames. Often less than if you go to a second sale shop.

    I love how this turned out, especially in the frame. I started a painting last evening. You told us in one of your past videos that if we don't like how it looks then it is not done. I love your honesty! It is so helpful to be reminded that not every painting session results in a masterpiece, even for experienced artists! It would also be helpful to hear WHY you think a painting doesn't work - as a novice, sometimes I don't know why I dislike my work so I'm not sure how to approach potentially fixing it. Thanks for always keeping it real!

    • @windywednesday4166
      @windywednesday4166 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good point about why sometimes we just don't like a painting. Sometimes I hate a painting so much I want to pull my hair out but when I go back to it I'm pleased. I seem to look at it with 'different eyes' in my mind. I still see the mistakes, but they're no longer the biggest thing about the picture.

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The eyes become habituated to the painting while you’re working on it, and they literally “see” it differently. You know how when you stare at a bright light or a patch of colour you get an after-image when you look away? Something like that is going on in your brain while you work on a painting. Once you’ve left it alone for a while, preferably at least overnight, that effect fades and you can see it correctly again. You might still not like it, but you see it as it is.

      Same here. It hurts a little because even cheap watercolor paper is kind of expensive. I just got a huge mix media book, and I'm having success with that. I block it into halves or quarters and I do a follow along, then I try it agian... I make notes about what video I was watching, what brush I was using, the colors and what brand. I can fill it in with sketches of different ideas and composition... basically, I turn a 20-minute video into a 2-day project, but I think it'll pay off in the end.

Lo & behold, they’re precious! Not only that, but when asked where I bought the pictures many commented their praise on even parts that I truly didn’t like at first. Now, seeing your process today, I admit I really liked the black lines, yet when you continued, it just came to its own loveliness 😉 Seeing it framed… well I’d love it on my wall ❤️. I have loved art from a little girl but didn't seem to have the time and tools to do what I wanted to do. I finally have most of the art supplies and room to do this. I'm going to keep watching and learn from you. Thank you for sharing your work with us.

      Hi there, and welcome! I’m not sure if you’ve commented before… I just want to encourage you to pick up a brush and give it a go. There’s nothing to lose. If you don’t like what you do throw it away. If you don’t know whether you like what you’ve done, put it in a drawer and leave it. This pink painting had a gap of over a month between the first stage and the second stage. I basically gave up on it in frustration but later I got it out again and decided to finish it. I’m not very happy with it but it’s okay. It’s done. I learnt something while I was doing it. We are all learning all the time. As I always say, if not now, then when?

    I have used some of my paintings as a frame for photos, say little girls in pink or purple outfits framed under glass on top of this. I’ve done a fox that sits next to a grand child’s picture, another with a winter tree scene next to a school pic. Both look fantastic!

    Yep, you're right, framing does make a massive difference! I know - I've done it with some of mine n yeh, they look (dare i say it) quite good on the wall up the stairs!!

    I don't want to think about winter yet, but here I am, anticipating November with you. We haven't all done them -- all the things-- yet. I enjoyed my "disaster." Am presently waiting for it to dry to see what else I can do with it. And I love the thrift shop for frames. So grateful to you and the side view into your world. Keep up the good work -- and the good cheer!

    I see some paintings as milestones. I cannot always define that meaning. I just know. And I hang those in frames in my art/sewing cottage. At some point I may bring some in the house, but not yet.

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that’s a very logical way of learning. I still have paintings hanging in the house that I did many years ago - in fact my very first watercolour - just to remind me of the journey.

    I’ve participated in the random craft/art fair now and then...always tiny, mostly amateurs. Frequently, the pieces I take as “filler”, the ones I hate but well, i need more in the pile, so in they go, are the ones that sell first. We are our own worst enemies! And I agree that framing, or at least matting and putting them in clear sleeves, definitely gives them a boost! I love your little pink flowers - they are lovely. 🥰🌸🌸

    you made me smile - well, actually laugh, when you were trying to find the right tombow pen/brush. Looking forward to the Christmas cards - all the traditional themes are always wonderful and with your joy of painting, it will be great!!! I loved colouring when I was a child - painting with abandon is quite like colouring with forgiveness! I love your painting - the fun was worth it!

    Hello Diane,
    I am enjoying this video. I love your new intriguing video titles.They definitely catch attention.
    This morning I went to an estate sale. Interesting enough, the most expensive art work pieces were simple pieces with lots of "doodle" designs like your very creative art works. They reminded me of you and your art work. And yes, they were way beyond my price range. Ha, ha.
    Hope you had a good week.
    Remember, you are alright and will be alright.
    Sending love and hugs to all of you.

    I love love this painting! I didn't comment the other day about the autumnal painting being framed but when I saw it I was stunned.....it looked awesome. I still haven't gotten very far in the 3 yrs of my learning to paint venture....hand/arm issues but I have made some little super beginner ones, and I am going to put them in some $tree frames! Why not? They will only serve to spur me on. Thanks so much Diane. You never cease to amaze us! 😀

      Thank you so much Kathy, I hope your hand and arm get better soon, it must be very frustrating, I thank the heavens daily that my hands still work - just a touch of trigger finger here and there. So glad you’re happy with the ones you’ve done, well done!
