Sometimes I just come back to this video when the world wasn't to shit. I remember the first time watching this and being so blown away. I was 14, and now that I'm 20, I still love all the work that went into this.
Wow, thanks so much for sharing! This is an extremely late response, but it’s amazing to hear that Rosa still resonates with you after all these years. Appreciate you coming back to watch it! It really means a lot!
Same. I remember showing this to what few friends I have then, after watching the short myself. And watching it now gives that sense of nostalgia, considering the time this short film was released. I say it deserves more attention than it already has.
I've seen this well over 50 times, and it is endlessly fascinating. Character creation, on the fly story telling, scenery and depth and quality are all outstanding. Okay, I like it. At the end Rosa is not resigned nor has surrendered but understands, though it appears her loyal enemy has not.
I'm reading a lot of criticism on this work but I'm not seeing much about the 10 months of his life devoted to creating it. He is not a major studio with hundreds of ppl doing his choriography and composition. If you have a criticism, then show us better from YOUR OWN mind and and obviously far superior talents. (I assume the sarcasm will be recognized.) For the resources used I think he did a great job and I understood the story immediately because I have an imagination. Are we so used to being spoon fed that we have lost our ability to appreciate something that just makes us think? I applaud the efforts of this artist.
Have to agree..as a beginner CG artist myself ( I can barely make a ball bounce ), I can see the staggering amount of work that went into this...I'm blown-away.
Well since you made an excellent point I wrote down what I thought disappointed me most, identified a single source/spot to rectify and here's my solution. Okay let me critic: the precise. It was written like a bad book cover from a terrible editor. Giving away too much while expecting the drama /action to carry the entire story. Fail. Here's my version. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Rosa awakens to fulfill her destiny. The city awaits. As do others... A coming into one's own story in a distant future. Set in an epic cityscape of plastic and sparkling glass. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Yes it's cliched but the cliche is usefull and accurate. Btw. There weren't a bunch of unfulfilled story lines from my precise. It doesn't set one up to look for emerging lifeforms with complex needs that require monitoring. Who Rosa is unfolds on it's own, and most importantly those damn butterflies can be seen as an anomaly perhaps even a type of tech. Not something that exists without the support framework of an (absent) ecosystem. Smh.
I cant believe that after 11 years this video does not have millions of views. I remember this short when I was in school and my friend and I were amazed by its quality. Truly a great work.
i've watched this before, truly can't remember when but it was months maybe a year or two ago and i STILL love it just as much as the first time. and i sincerely wish and hope for this to be made into a longer movie or even a series. this is so amazing
I have been doing 3d animation for years and as a one person project the amount of work put in is simply amazing. All these comments that are negative are really juvenile.
That was AWESOME!!!! I'd love to see this turned into a full length movie with more character and plot development...and were the cool cyborg girl doesn't get wasted! That was some truly EPIC animation, hats off to the artists, animators and everyone involved with the production!
This is so awesome, and the Ghost in the shell influence is obvious. Thats a sign of a great anime or great art in general.....when it inspires the work of others.
Amazing. The ending gave me heavy Nier vibes. From what I can interpret about the other androids, they either were tampered with or went rogue. Destroying many robots in order for all natural life to remain dead.
O.m.g. that's gotta be the best bit of animation I have ever seen, absolutely phenomenal, pure class and what a hint of a story, wish it could be made into a full movie. Will look out for this artists work in the future for sure.
This must have been some crazy work. I could see this taking over a year to do, amazing detail, perfect lighting and the sound effects were really well done!
I come back to this short film time and time again. In 5th grade, my Halloween costume was as Rosa. This film has stayed in my life for years and years and I’m comfortable saying that it’s landed a role in the person I’ve become. I love this short film with all my heart and I still follow its creator as a thank you for making this art piece. I’m so glad that other people like it too.

Green is life, Red is death. Green gives life, Red takes life. But.. green killed red. Life will die and death will live. But when life dies, it gives more lives. This is deeper than i thought
THAT WAS EPIC AF!!!! The art, the story, the depth. I was reading some of the comments about not moving a story....well they clearly did not watch the video and read the description box properly then. : ))))))
For lack of a better word... 'Masterpiece"..!! This has far superior care and craft!!! Likely the best video on this channel...so far...xD He's like a mix between Michael Mann and Tim Burton without any of that racism, of course!
So... all of the names at the start were plants... and from Rosa's blood came roses. Makes me wonder whether she ever had any other purpose than spilling her blood to bring forth the roses.
Absolutely breathtaking love the little details like the glimpse of the moon making you wonder what the hell happend to it, let alone everything else. Awesome and inspiring.
Hard to believe this was made by ONE guy, especially considering all the animations must have been done by hand since he probably didn´t have any motion capture equipment. I was always under the impression that this level of 3D art took big studios and millions of dollars to make. Quite an achievement I´d say.
This is a keeper. Ordinarily I find this genre boring: mostly special effects, very poor story. But with "Rosa", although I still haven't figured out all of the story, (maybe it is supposed to be that way... ) I love it! As CGI, it may be considered as all special effects. No "points" there, although certainly very well done. Where "Rosa" really stands out is in the perfection of its storytelling. Even if the story itself is largely a mystery. The sheer beauty of the images, the lighting, the camera angles and movements, the editing, the overall design, the individual design elements, and, of course, the music, they all work so well that I cannot help but be drawn into the film's story. My humble admiration to Jesús Orellana. It is a testament to your incredible talent. Thank you!
I like to re-watch this short film every time I stumble upon it. Wasn't it suppose to become a full length movie a few years back or was that just a rumor that never took fruition.?!
One of the best short I have seen!!! Reminded me of that anime were the little kids were playing hide an seek in that city and were being killed. Loved the short!!!
It was actually pretty awesome. And probably deeper than Mr. "Negative pants" janssen gets. Who cares if there was a message or if it was to show off skills? No one has to watch it. Oh, and there was progression for one side. One of the "red eyes" is dead. Either way it was fun to watch. Everybody is so damn negative all the time. Just slow down and take time to smell the rosa for cryin out loud... (see what I did there...?) :)
This is amazing, and you guys shouldn't be criticizing it. Hes, we'll have different opinions, and it's okay to be blunt, but there's a difference between constructive criticism and just being rude.
This seemed to care more about action scenes than actually saying something. And what little it did say was cliche and/or didn't really make sense. I have a feeling the award it won was for the animation quality, not for all the other aspects that are required to make a true work of art.
***** What the crap was it about? why where those guys trying to kill her? & why did they kill everyone else? I don't get it? were they insane or just murderous killer robots? or is that what they were supposed to do so she could create plants? or what was the deal? So confused.
Redeemified I'll explain what i got from watching it twice and reading the description. It seems Rosa was made to make the world livable again. The other robots/cyborgs were made to either help, stop, or just plain kill others of it's kind with a different programming than them. Seeing as the two were awoken shortly after Rosa, and the fact there were human corpses inside and outside the "birthing" house of Rosa, it's safe to assume that in this area the other two malfunctioned, and killed the good Rosa's and humans. Watching many shows with the same concept has let me to believe each Rosa (or non violent robo) was set to awaken at different times to help the planet. This is most likely because the battery life of the Rosa's is short. Now you may ask, "What of the two that killed Rosa." Well, seeing as they may be malfunctioned versions, plus the bodies of other malfunctioned Rosa's, it's also safe to assume the other Rosa's that awoke also fought back and won some battles but were also killed in the end. The last two baddies learned and went back each kill to recharge. Waiting for another to wake up. I also assume they do not know where the Good Rosa's come from, or they just would have killed them while they slept. It's also safe to assume they do not know if the next to wake will work like them, or be a goodie. So they just wait it out. All assumptions as i did not make this short film, but seeing as there are hardly any "NEW" ideas, i have to be close in my assumptions to main plot. I know that was long, but now you should have a better idea on what was or is ( still, no real clue, lol ) going on in "THIS" robo/life/death/save the earth story.
After looking at it a 3rd time. Note all the names in Rosa's memory or pod (whatever) are plants. While the other two that activated late are larvae/insects. It could be as simple as its the Larvae's job to kill Rosa (plant), and spread her blood everywhere to make Roses, Nelum, Lilium, etc.
no problem. Some movies want you to guess the plot, or do the whole, "whatever you think happened, happened." It's a writer thing. Sometimes i don't know what the fuck is going on too. So i just roll with it, watch it, and go from there.
Great visuals. And I like how you introduce opposing characters in the "simulation" in a mysterious way. You don't really know what's going on all the time and it makes you think. Great music, I like the ambience of the visuals. Off course one can see the influence of "The Matrix" here but you have added a nice "golden" variation upon those visuals. Incredible complexity in the modelling/animation department. I can't fully believe how you managed to add so much detail and still create a sense of a coherent whole! I really like the ending too. Darkly romantic but not sentimental at all. It "felt" right! I wonder: Was "Rosa" one of others before her going through the same order of events? Was it a computer game in virtual reality (that she played for fun?) or was it a punishment (still in a virtual reality environment) leading to a true death in the end? Thought provoking... If something could be said on the negative side it has to be that I wanted a little bit more story and character and less action. But now as I understand it you wanted to make this into a feature length film in the end maybe the full length film will explore this more in depth. I wanted to know a little bit more about the main character, have some twists in the story or just more story material in general with an original approach. A mind-bender is a bit expected and I think you took it almost as far as one could go visually! More visual storytelling though - still an amazing work one of the best computer animated shorts I have seen on the net! If you're interested check out my own computer animated film "Alien Forever" available to be seen here on TH-cam. It's about a female protagonist experiencing an international war in the future still picking up odd insights on the way. th-cam.com/video/9p9wMVGhBKE/w-d-xo.html Keep up the good work!
While I applaud the immense effort that went into this short... sadly, I found it was thick with "atmosphere" and impression... but very thin on actually advancing a story or a tale. It attempts to "look cool", without any substance behind that facade. The music and sound effects... totally overbearing. It lacks subtlety and purpose. When you can cut out almost every frame of footage, and not affect the story, then you know there is a problem. This is almost entirely an animation technology demo.
Don't be such a killjoy. It was made by one lone guy and for what it is it's brilliant. If you want to pitch an idea, you need to have something to show. This short film provides quite a lot of material to anyone interested in making a game of a full length movie out of it.
Spearmann, you took the words right out of my mouth...incredible artistic effort and programming went into this, but overall i am left with the impression of seeing a very expensive commercial for some obscurely referenced product.
Rosa because she has the ability to grow roses I think that's what every ai is named after what plant they can repopulate and I think the other guys are the ones that are basically bad but it's bad ass that they took her for granted and she really kicked their ass her mission what's more important this is so epic
"There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of colored glass that have been in use through all the ages." ~Mark Twain But, to spin even an old idea, in such a way as to drag you in, is true art.
This is great work, for those that talk about ghost in a shell, you'all need to really look closer because this is different....very different. The android is not part human...but maybe part plant...who knows, but I think it's very creative and I love it way better than ghost in a shell.

Both the original matrix and Ghost in the shell have a level of substance and social commentary and continuity that this short could never capture...

If it's meant as a "business card" or a portfolio, then we agree. If he is supposed to be a story teller, then we disagree.
Spearmann, you took the words right out of my mouth...incredible artistic effort and programming went into this, but overall i am left with the impression of seeing a very expensive commercial for some obscurely referenced product.
My exact thougt.
you basically are calling the artist "Michael Bay" -- all flash, no substance.
This was mind blowing. Just... wow.
Man this was incredible
This is spooky. I saw a minute of this at a convention a few days ago and now it appears in my recommended videos.
That was the most vicious game of Pat-a-Cake ever.
Rosa because she has the ability to grow roses I think that's what every ai is named after what plant they can repopulate and I think the other guys are the ones that are basically bad but it's bad ass that they took her for granted and she really kicked their ass her mission what's more important this is so epic
he'd need a name that epic to make something this good.
This is the work of Jesus !
Love the genre, but can Rosa be resurrected , please 😊
"There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of colored glass that have been in use through all the ages." ~Mark Twain
But, to spin even an old idea, in such a way as to drag you in, is true art.
This is great work, for those that talk about ghost in a shell, you'all need to really look closer because this is different....very different. The android is not part human...but maybe part plant...who knows, but I think it's very creative and I love it way better than ghost in a shell.
Thanks! I really appreciate that! :)
happy to see the moon destroyed in this film !
