I don't think this short is saying religion is bad. The priest wasn't evil because he was religious, it's because he used his influence, not to give people spiritual help and advice, but instead because he used it to bring fear into the men and women of backwater and and bring hate towards the one man in town that didn't listen to him. I think that the message isn't not to be religious, but rather not to let people who are in charge of religions to have too much power, or else it will get to their heads and they'll start using it for personal gain.

He murdered countless women aided by his young daughter & niece (they were just kids at the time) because the Town Councillors were going to throw him out for bad conduct. A Councilman's Elderly Wife was among the murdered women.
Exactly! The town was afraid of death, but if they all stood United and tried to protect each other, there would have been less death, or he might not have even shown up at all. But the Father weaponized their fear likely in a gambit to protect himself by targeting someone vulnerable as a sacrifice. By turning on each other out of fear, they doomed themselves. The Undertaker didn’t even have to do anything to them; their own fear killed them.

PH_Brony130, the Preacher was committed to a god alright, not the God he thought he was committed to. Fear the Lord? I'd say to that hateful preacher, 'What Lord is that? The Good Lord who loves without condition or the Lord of Lies who has ownership of YOUR FILTHY MIND, HEART & SOUL?'
I love the meaning. I mean, the undertaker (figuratively) was not a person, but people were afraid of him. People were afraid to die. They'd barricated in their homes for days, without food or water, and that lead them to death. That's the true meaning of the undertaker.
They were fearful of dying, so they did anything they could to not die, which in the end only killed them faster.

I can totally picture this as a feature length-psychological horror film.
Imagine it, the lore behind the undertaker, how nobody knows the truth but all have different theories. When did he first start appearing? Or what if he stays for weeks and you see the effects it'll have on different people. Like people start slowly going insane rather than just snapping instantly, they start hallucinating or don't trust each other, they even stop trusting themselves.
I'd even like to see more with the reverend and the cripple, and how the reverend maybe starts abusing his position to manipulate people in this time of fear. Good lord the possibilities!
I'm probably over thinking it, but that would be so interesting.

The priest was that "one bad apple"
No, all of them were bad apples, which becomes obvious by the murderous rage they have to save themselves when they think they might die. But, nobody wanted to admit it(confirmed by the "he without sin... blah blah)", so they hid behind god and chose to believe the priest. The guitarist was the only legit guy there, seeing things for what they where.

"Religion is stupid". It doesn't matter if you're the only one who address their talent. Most people are going to comment on the stupidity of Religion, because that is the obvious message being conveyed in this video; made by people "people with talent."
benny honna I'd say the message is more about how religion can be abused. I never thought "oh religion is stupid" when I saw this, I thought, "look at that preacher abusing his power over the townsfolk"

The undertaker is a representation of death, The pastor tries to make the people believe that they can cheat death through religion, even though death is an inevitability and shows up in blackwater to prove this, That death does not have a master... Death involves a change. The ultimate change for any creature on the planet. Unfortunately, humans don't like change. They want consistent and predictable. A stroll through the gateway of death is a path into the unknown that many just can't handle. Religion seems to be a balm of sorts, promising a reward beyond that gate for those who behave in a certain way.
It is genuinely depressing when extreme religion clouds rational thinking, reason and logic. Had it not been for the latter three concepts and our ability to utilize them, we'd never have come out of the caves to build cities and civilizations.

Every time I watch this, I see something new.
*SPOILERS*
5:46 The Priest says "I say, the blasphemer shall be stoned!" instead of "the Lord says" which makes me think he isn't really a man of God, he's a man of himself. He follows no one, and even if he did at one time, that time is long gone. He is a symbol of corruption. He defaced the Bible and put a freaking gun in it, and that really doesn't make me feel that the "Priest" cares about or even believes in God, just so long as everyone obeys him. The Tramp did not obey him, and the Priest couldn't stand it, so he killed him.
Bubba (the large bald man), to me, represents blind obedience. He goes outside even though he is frightened of the Undertaker. He follows the Priest only so long as he thinks the Priest follows God. After the Tramp is dead, and the Undertaker doesn't move, he realizes the Priest has been controlling them for his own agenda.
The Undertaker could be the angel of death, because of how the Tramp says to paint blood on the door, and how you see the Undertaker's black wings flicker on screen.
The townspeople, especially the one who says, "well it ain't gonna be me!" represent paranoia and fear of death. They go to the church only because they think it will save themselves (I'm not saying God does or doesn't exist), and they kill the Tramp to save themselves. When chaos breaks out, they try to kill everyone else to make the Undertaker leave.
The Tramp, I don't really know what he represents. He could just represent mischievous behavior, or something much deeper.
This is possibly my favorite short film I have ever seen. I really hope to see this as a feature length movie. The art style is rather macabre, and perfectly sets the mood for the whole thing. Bravo!
The Tramp could very well represent rebellion. Something happened in his life that made him go against a belief.
Now I'm not going for or against any faith, but in a small town in the middle of nowhere, most everyone is generally on the same page when it comes to that, and being the outsider in something so sensitive a topic as religion, tends to get ugly. Note the West Memphis Three.
I think the townsfolk represented a form of greed when it comes to religion. Too many people practice a faith for their own gain, and pray for nothing but material wealth and to save their own hides. No one there actually followed the teachings, and only cried out for salvation and guidance because they were scared.
As for the Undertaker, I don't think he represented any kind of justice or felt anything toward the situation. Someone was going to die soon, and he was there to do a job. I don't think he felt any more or less toward the situation that an undertaker digging a grave which is soon to be occupied.

This is the beauty of Death, for Death smiles at beggars as it does kings, as it does to preachers, as it does to politicians...

Ahh, I remember watching this as a kid. I used to think it was about the Undertaker monster-guy, but then I realise- it's the mistrust and violence between people when paranoia takes grip of them. The Undertaker himself does nothing. He just sat there.
Everyone else went mad, and decided to collectively blame the crippled man who didn't attend sermons- blaming him, that he had somehow drawn the Undertaker to their town.
The priest used fear to control the town, make them blame the crippled man.
"Submit to the Lord!" "Why don't you try it?" He called him out.
And the fight scene- the priest's Bible is empty, it's a box with a gun inside it. If that ain't a message about using religion as a facade to cover one's own wrongdoings, I don't know what is.

From the looks of this, it seems the Undertaker himself is not responsible for any of the bloodshed, but his presence causes people to go nuts and end up destroying themselves. If this became feature-length, maybe a twist ending would be a few people who kept their heads and end up surviving, and when they finally confront the Undertaker after the bloodshed is over, they watch him do his job. They ask him why he does what he does. He replies "If I didn't, all of mankind would fall to the plague of fear. This plague of fear must be quarantined at all costs." He starts to walk away with his hands grasped behind his back, and after an awkward silence he says "However, a day will come when I am no longer needed. It will be a great day indeed." He then leaves never to be seen again. What he says in the end is actually a happy note.
Make a good movie. Hell better than most horror movies if done right....hmmm should rephrase that shouldn't I. This movie/whatever it will be if it happens, would be better than 90% of the currently made horror movies. No? Wrong wording again?
What if, when asked, "why do you do this?" He simply turned around and said, "I don't... They do. You do." turned back, and slowly walked away.

I think the churches possible downfall with society was that the church has become judgemental rather than loving the unbelievers and holding themselves (the church) accountable for what they are doing.
Love Jesus, hate religion. Which may be confusing at first but religion is pretty much corrupted for the (leaders) own purposes. Jesus slams down the ways of how the leaders should behave (and it's not popular). Jesus befriends the atheists but he doesn't set the rules for them. Once you start following him though thats when you do what he says because you love him.

Agreed! But God over and over says that he will punish/destroy those who won't change their ways. As a Christian/Jew that isn't our duty. We are SUPPOSED to love and God also loves as well, but he also executes (for good reasons).

Section8ification That's stupid. If your boss tells you to work on Saturday, then work on Saturday. It doesn't matter what's written in some book, you need to work when your boss tells you to work. It's different if some one tells you not to celebrate a holiday, or some thing in your home that doesn't effect others. But when your boss tells you to do something, do it.

This is quite possibly my favorite animation I've ever seen. The art direction, the animation, the music, sound, atmosphere, acting, setting, theme, all executed beautifully and flawlessly. Bravo, this is truly the work of a master!

I left the path of religion 15 years ago and I dislike fanatics of all denominatios, but some of you calling yourselves "atheists" here, are no different from those fanatics if you just spread hate and insult believers. Not all religious people are fanatical. Many use religion in a healthy way, and that is not being "brainwashed", as some people here state. CONSCIOUSLY CHOOSING TO BELIEVE in a divine being or beings (if you choose Hinduism, Wicca, etc.) can be beautiful and fulfilling when combined with a rational view of reality. When you are able to ANALYZE your own beliefs and even CHALLENGE THEM TO IMPROVE THEM, because true spirituality has never been a death, frozen set of rules.
Actually, many of the greatest scientists have been either deeply spiritual men or atheists who respected believers. Science and true spirituality have never been opposed. But it's so sad to see some people here claiming "they are free from religion", and yet, their absolute view of reality, their aggressiveness and fundamentalism as atheists is just AN ALTERNATIVE EXPRESSION OF DEEPLY FANATICAL RELIGIOUS INDOCTRINATION. They are Inquisitors accusing other Inquisitors. The day you will be truly free of religion, guys, is THE DAY YOU LEARN TO RESPECT AND TOLERATE ALL HEALTHY BELIEFS. The day you learn to respect that some humans are perfectly happy being simple mortals with no God around, and some are perfectly happy being part of a divine plan, and both views are valid and valuable.

Not all religious people are dogmatic, many will have rational views of reality, so maybe it's just that you have met the most fanatical ones. Take a look at Newton's biography, for example. He discovered gravity and he was an amazing mathematician, and yet, he believed in God. And yet, he despised the Inquisition. Does that make him stupid under your definition?

Nephania Black What you have to understand is most of the people commenting have had terrible experiences with religious people, I myself have had pretty bad experiences with them I've told many people that I don't believe in god and more than half of them have told me things in the vein of "you're going to hell" and some of these were by people I considered friends.
so while I agree that both sides can be bad I believe religion as a whole can be extremely unhealthy. I personally have nothing against the people who believe it I just believe religion itself is bad as well as the people who profit off it.

Which is what the the majority of Religious leaders do. He was only following what the Bible tells it's followers to do very clearly. Guide the people like sheep and repress or kill anyone that does not conform. Looks to me like he is representing the two most popular Religions perfectly by inciting a mob against the nonbeliever with the fear of death and eternal damnation. Of course that is only based of the entire history of the Christian and Muslim faiths and the fact that they have been the direct cause of more death, misery and destruction than anything else in the history of mankind. So yeah..... other than those "small things" he in no way represent religion.
'Religious leaders/clergymen' have been twisting and turning information in books like bible for centuries according to their needs, aka misuse of power, violence etc. Quran in the muslims' case couldnt be changed but secondary sources such Hadith literature are full of contradictions and violence-mongering 'teachings' which are used and believed widely among muslims, 'traditions' have been passed down via ancestors and have been challenged by very few. Quran does not encourage violence, people just love to take the description out from the context and misinform everyone including themselves (interestingly, people who challenge the Quran do this very same thing as the blind fanatics who commit terrorism in Islam's name). Furthermore, Quran's linguistic aspect is hardly analyzed and when it is, its done in the wrong way...I could go on but Im not actually here to debate or persuade anyone, there are in fact so many things wrong with our research in religion as a whole for ages..
I am sorry but you are wrong. Both books very clearly support and encourage acts of violence, murder, rape and mutilation against non conformers and severe punishment for anything but strict adherence to doctrine. You can not just blame it on the people who devote themselves to following it's teachings when the teaching themselves are horrible by any standards. They are a product and result of the religion itself and casting blame on them but not the faith that tells them how to follow is just childish. When a person is raised his entire life thinking it is ok to treat people like they are less than him or somehow worthy of discrimination just because they are different it is not just the person that is the problem but also their way of life. I am not in any way taking these things out of context. I have studied Theology for most of my adult life and I understand the Bible and the Qur'an very well. They are both books of hate and control that teach followers to mask themselves in righteousness while committing horrible atrocity against their fellow man and still thinking what they are doing is holy, just and in no way evil. The preacher follows his book to the letter and the result is very much in line with history.

I feel perhaps you should focus on Backwater, starting before its obvious downfall. It could have been a prosperous, white-picket fence society, and the Priest initially is very kind hearted to the townsfolk with the exception the Tramp. That is, until someone dies and the Undertaker shows up. People don't think anything of it, that he's just a passing nomad or something of the like. But then he comes again, and again anytime someone dies. As the town learns to fear him, the Tramp could develop a relationship with the Undertaker, being the only one to eventually talk to him about anything despite the Undertakers constant silence. Eventually, things become so twisted that they end up as they are in this video, a society so scared of death or the promise of it that they blindly follow their faith, hoping it will save them. Eventually, as they did in the end here, they kill each other, leaving no one but the Undertaker. If the Tramp should be given special treatment by the Undertaker because he was the only one who understood that he shouldn't be feared, that's up to you. This is just my two cents and I know whatever you do with The Backwater Gospel, you will always have my support :D
I like this idea. It would be a good way to justify the Tramp being labeled as a "blasphemer" or a "bad apple" because he's perceived to be in league with the Undertaker, and the Undertaker is presumed by the townsfolk to be an agent of Death or even the Devil.

***** Yeah, also one of the most impacting moments for me was when the father revealed to have had a gun concealed in his bible all along, showing that he was just as fearfull and paranoic as everyone else. Maybe he went ahead and invited the undertaker to mass one day, only to be creeped out by something he said/did like saying "This town has so little time" knowing that something bad would happen soonish but not what or when made him go bananas awaiting for the worse, while trying to convince himself that it was a lie, that if he could get everyone on the right path nothing would happen, but maybe should be prepared, just in case and started to wonder if he could get rid of the undertaker altogether...

Actually, no one was supposed to die. In the "making of" video, one of the notes stated that the undertaker was sent to the town as a test of their faith. Had they waited one more day, he would have left.

I think it's because the tramp was completely innocent in all of this. Even his corpse is laid out in the shape of the cross, possibly to emphasize this.

This animated short is one of the very reasons I love the medium of animation, this is the first thing I have since in years to truly test the limits of both style and substance giving us no the world something both beautiful and gritty.

Guys, this doesn't mean that religion his horrible. It shows the hypocrisy and selfishness of other people caused by the fear of death and the hope of a higher power or religion.
Most people of all kind will turn their backs on the death of another to save their own and this animation is just showing us how corrupt and ruthless a manipulated mind could be.
So please, everyone out there, listen to what you think is right, interpret a religion into your own and never follow the acts of another into thinking that they will be either good or evil.

So what have we learned folks? As history shows us, religion can make you do the most unspeakable things. Especially when a believer is gripped by fear, which in essence is primarily the driving force behind Christianity. How appropriate - a belief that advocates divine protection, is fueled by the basic concepts of fear.

Javonne, It's easy to prove your point wrong. If believing in God made people do things like they do in this short film, why don't we see Christians doing this all the time? The Bible says to love your enemy so anyone who murders etc is not acting like a Christian- they're acting like an animal (Which some believe they are).
sinexposed I am a Christian Orthodox. He said "religion" not believing in god. Christians used to do things like that. They burned people just because they though they were witches for example. They act racist against homosexual people (not all of them). And bible also is full of violence and shit. The religion can make you to believe and do bad things. We have stop being such violent as a society not because Bible said love your enemy but because we have science, we live in 2014. And as javone said, Church try to keep Christians by fear and lies.

Then the guy who had been the pastors/father's right hand in the Church threw a bolder...The undertaker came right on time because he knew they would die, because someone would take the preacher's words for truth and kill out of fear, greed, something. And they did. There was no escaping this circle of mass murder we call life. But I loved this and how when the guitar plater died, his body was I. The shape of a crucifix, like the cross the patron of the Christians, Jesus Christ, had been murdered on. As if these two sacrifices we're one in the same because both were killed out of fear and greed.

Why, yes, religions do indeed tend to have a extremely, extremely small number of extremists who do horrible things which completely go against the entire point of the religion they follow.
Although, since the same can be said for pretty much any kind of group I'm not sure what your point was. Honestly, you make it sound like religion is the only thing with extremists, and that it causes everyone who is part of the religion to go around ruining lives.

I like how they were wondering what the undertaker wanted, when he really came for the town. And when he sat there at the well just waiting for things to go down, he just watched and I could imagine a grin spreading across his face when the mob started to slaughter one another. The undertaker could've been Satan or just a fallen angel. This was amazing!!
I love how a small little religious hate drives people against each other. Why can't we just enjoy the beautiful art and story? It's a wonderful Gothic piece of work. I remember watching this on Facebook for the first time and it instantly became my favorite. I also like the message for it too.
Wow. This short film had all the right emotions in all the right places.
This short film basically tells of the bad things religion can do to people and how it manipulates others and can be used to control the ones stupid enough to believe it.
I don't think it's just religion. The Preacher scared them into stoning the man, but the people themselves had been saying "Well, it ain't gonna be me" long before they had been scared enough to stone that one man. The bloodshed was brought on by their own fear to die. If anything this video also tells how sometimes our greatest fears of something, and our attempts to evade fate can be the very thing that causes our demise. Its not unlike a movie about a tyrant and a baby child prophesied to kill that tyrant. The tyrant sees that that baby has been born adn tries to kill it. The Baby survives and goes on to kill the Tyrant because the Tyrant continually tries to kill him, and becomes a worse fearful and hated Tyrant as time goes on, and he hurts the one that once-a-baby hero loves. If the tyrant took the baby in and raised him, he could make him the next ruler, and maybe the love he might foster for that child would not only save his life, but change him. This story has been done many times, but never with that alternative. This is the aspect being portrayed in this clip however, that if you fight against your fate or Destiny, you will be the reason that that fate or Destiny becomes inevitable. If we embrace whatever is meant to happen and not run away or work our way out of it, maybe our fate or Destiny can change.

***** well you should also pay attention to the church members themselves. look at the way they first walk into the church, almost like mindless zombies. they get scared of everything that is unknown to them and even follow the preacher when he demands to stone someone to death. i think the preacher represented religion, as you may be surprised at how many christian religous forms were made for control people (roman catholic especially).

Barbara Tuchman once said, "The amazing thing about human history is how little human nature changes." Human nature, not religion. There was another book written by a man who immigrated into America around the 17th or 18th Century that I can't really quote or whatever because I honestly cannot remember a good enough amount of information to truly do his work justice. However, he came into America a while after the periods of the Old Lights and the New Lights when Americans, during both periods, had become barbaric. I mean, everyone in the Country were people you did not want to meet in a dark alley during the times known collectively as The Great Awakening. Each time, though different because one was a solemn kind of Christianity that was quie that set in, and the next awakening was the fierce fire and brimstone kind that shook America to the core, Revivals were insanely widespread. Overnight each time the entire Nation turned from thieves, vagabonds, rapists, and murderers into good country, church-going people who would gladly help you in a pickle. Between those two periods people had descended back into their old ways and gone back to being some pretty brutal types, both the murderers and criminals, as well as the men who would catch/kill/exact revenge on them. After the period known as The Great Awakening, in or around the 1800s, many immigrants from Ireland, Germany, Russia, and various other countries started immigrating to America because of the freedoms that were promised. Freedoms of Speech, property, religion, political beliefs, and all manner of other things. A man whose name I cannot recall wrote a book because he was astounded by the fact that Religion in America at that time was not what Religion was everywhere else. In all other countries religious people would take over, force all people to convert to that religion or die or face extreme consequences, prevent people from having educations or they would assert total dominance or what-have-you. They might as well have been considered communist regimes adn had a draconian control on all things in that country. That is not what this immigrant found here, and he wrote a book saying what I am now paraphrasing. "[In America]....Religion without Moralitydescends into tyranny, but that is not what I have found here in America...Religion is good because the people are good...." and that is the gist of what he said in his Conclusions. From what I remember about it, it was a fair-sized amout of text on the matter during the 17th or 18th Century. He was astounded by how so many people of different faiths had their own congregations and such, and all the people were good caring people, and how they all coexisted together. They might not associate with one another beyond what was necessary, but they worked and lived in tranquility with one another as Patriotism for the Nation was great amongst the people.

Arguably one of the best short films I have ever watched.
Simply gorgeous. I wish that this was either a video game or TV show.
Not sure about all the symbolism. I just thought it was sort of a funny, twilight-zone kinda twist. The undertaker comes and takes someone whenever he appears. But at the very beginning, he takes someone. Meaning that if they'd waited a few more days, he would have just left. But since no one saw him take the dead man, they figured that someone was still going to be taken away.
